Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
The behaviour of the polyfunctional morpheme d= in the Syriac language of the Gospels of the Peshiṭta is described in a typological perspective, in synchrony and in comparison, for some properties, with other varieties of Syriac and with other Semitic languages. d=, a former demonstrative in Proto-Semitic, is a relator at various syntactic levels: a determination place-holder, a genitival and relative marker, an introducer of completive and adverbial clauses.Chapter 1 introduces the topic of the study and the theoretical framework and chapter 2 discusses the state of art.Chapter 3 is dedicated to the study of the genitive phrase. We discovered that a syntactic criterion allows to distinguish semantically between alienable and inalienable phrases, to different degrees according to the semantic categories of the inalienable set, i.e. kinship and body part terms. In chapter 4, we showed that even though syntactic structures are similar for restrictive and non-restrictive relative clauses, it is impossible to relativize the latter for object, dative and adjoint relatives clauses. The syntactic gap strategy constitutes the primary strategy in the accessibility hierarchy and all the functions of the head in the main clause, except the object of comparison, are relativizable.Chapter 5 deals with the functions of d= as a complementizer and an introducer of adverbial clauses. The complementizer uses are wider than in Old Semitic. d= is employed with 12 of the 14 types of predicates of Noonan's typological classification as against 3 in Old Semitic. Syriac conforms to the implicational hierarchy named Complement Deranking-Argument Hierarchy. For adverbial clauses, the syntactic criterion of saturation of the verbal valency as well as semantic and contextual criteria permit to distinguish adverbial clauses from complement clauses. When d= forms conjunctive locutions with prepositions or adverbs, the polysemy of values is disambiguated thanks to the context. Only the conjunction mo d= is monosemous (with a temporal meaning). In the last chapter (chap. 6) on reported speech, we showed that direct reported speech is mostly introduced without d=, whereas it is always the case for indirect speech. Greek did not have any influence on the use of d=

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThe Politics of Diversity in Music Educationattends to the political structures and processes that frame and produce understandings of diversity in and through music education. Recent surges in nationalist, fundamentalist, protectionist, and separatist tendencies highlight the imperative for music education to extend beyond nominal policy agendas to critically consider the ways in which understandings about society are upheld or unsettled and the ways in which knowledge about diversity is produced. This chapter provides an overview of the scholarly foundations that this book builds upon before introducing the four sections of the book and contributing chapters. The first section of the book focuses on the politics of inquiry in music education research. The second section attends to the paradoxes and challenges that arise as music teachers negotiate cultural identity and tradition within the political frames and ideals of the nation state. The third section considers diversities that are often overlooked or silenced, and the final section turns to matters of leadership in higher music education as an inherently political and ethical undertaking. Together, chapters work towards a more critical, complex, and nuanced understanding of the ways in which the politics of diversity shape our ideals of what music education is, and what it is for.

Abstract:
The introduction to this book reviews detail the major claims put forth in RoN in 1970, and in particular, the claim that complex words, with deverbal nominals being the case at point, represent a formation that is neither predictable nor productive, and are hence lexically listed. This claim goes hand in hand, in RoN, with the claim that whatever similarities do hold between the deverbal nominal such as destruction and the verb destroy emerge from the existence of a category neutral listed form, DESTROY, which has a consistent subcategorization frame (an object in this case), which is realized identically in the syntax, in accordance with the X’-theory, and where the form DESTROY itself inherits its category from its categorial insertion context (N, V etc.). Since 1970, a rich body of studies has emerged which investigated the properties of lexical formations such as destruction and their relationship with the verb destroy, giving rise to multiple accounts of the emergence of complex words, as well as to the emergence of distinct argument structure combination in the context of nominalizations in particular, and word formation in general. Particularly influential was Grimshaw’s (1990) work, which introduced a typologically sound distinction between nominalizations with event structure (Complex Event Nominals, or Argument Structure Nominals) and nominals which lack event structure, and which may be result nominals or referential nominals or Simple Event Nominals, i.e. nouns which denote an event, but which do not have an event structure in the verbal sense (e.g. trip). More recently there has been the questioning of the partition between word formation and syntactic constituent building altogether, starting with Marantz (1997), and continuing with influential work by many of the contributors to this volume. This volume brings together a sample of contemporary approaches to nominalization, based on the historical record, but also branching into new grounds, both in terms of their syntactic approaches, and in terms of the range of languages considered.<320>

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the material frame of Tahrir Square. As a space, it has been shaped by the political-economic policies of the past four decades, which essentially turned it into an antihuman space, nominally suitable only as a “nonplace” that people passed through. A liberalized economy under the umbrella of a state that systematically redistributed income upward shaped demands for “bread, freedom, and social justice” as surely as it walled off Bulaq from communication with its urban surroundings, segregated Garden City to protect the imperial agents of the “Washington consensus,” and prepared downtown for private redevelopment. The causes of the revolution were inscribed in the urban fabric of its primary theater. It should be emphasized that the revolution-era character of Tahrir Square is incomprehensible without linking it to the growth of the formal parts of the expanding city, specifically the suburbs and their gated communities. But it is equally incomprehensible without similarly linking it to the even more significant growth of the informal parts of the city, and indeed the more general character of informality in many spheres of life, most significantly labor, which was systematically made precarious by the same design that poured resources into the new cities and slated Bulaq for extinction. However, the quotidian antihuman Tahrir Square depicted in the chapter has greater depth as a performance space than one might think.

Abstract:
This chapter considers two areas where The Satanic Temple has attempted to participate in institutions that nominally promote religious pluralism and tolerance: a 2014 black mass hosted through a cultural studies club at Harvard University and attempts to lead prayer invocations before city councils, following the 2014 Supreme Court decision Greece v. Galloway, which ruled that sectarian prayers may be offered provided no religion is excluded. In both cases, tremendous efforts were made to block The Satanic Temple from participating in these institutions. Several city councils passed new laws restricting prayer invocations rather than let The Satanic Temple participate. The Satanic Temple’s opponents did not frame their response as intolerance; rather, they claimed that The Satanic Temple is engaged in hate speech and must be censored. Analysis examines these responses and considers whether these institutions practice the values of tolerance and religious pluralism as they purport to.

Abstract:
This chapter presents a statistical methodology for structural damage diagnosis (detection, localization and estimation), in the context of continuous online monitoring. There are several sources of uncertainty such as physical variability, measurement uncertainty and model errors that affect structural damage diagnosis, and therefore, it may not be possible to precisely detect, localize, and estimate damage. Hence, a statistical approach can help to identify these sources of uncertainty, quantify their combined effect on diagnosis, and thereby, provide an estimate of the confidence in the results of diagnosis. Damage detection is based on residuals between nominal and damaged system-level responses, using statistical hypothesis testing whose uncertainty can be captured easily. Localization is based on the comparison of damage signatures derived from the system model. Both classical statistics-based methods and Bayesian statistics-based methods are investigated to quantify the uncertainty in all the three steps of diagnosis, i.e. detection, localization, and quantification. While classical statistics-based methods use the concept of least squares-based optimization, Bayesian methods make use of likelihood function and Bayes theorem. The uncertainties in damage detection, isolation and quantification are combined to quantify the overall uncertainty in diagnosis. The proposed methods are illustrated using the example of a structural frame.

Abstract:
Abstract Datum reference frames define coordinate systems for use in determining part compliance with geometric tolerances. A datum reference frame is specified based on the perfect nominal geometry of the part features called out as datums. However, the actual computation of a coordinate system frame of reference from the datum callouts becomes quite challenging when the features depart from nominal location, orientation, size, and form. We present a general method for representing datum reference frames (both partial and complete), and for computing a coordinate system from a simulated varianced part and a datum reference frame specification. The method makes use of built-in construction procedures, and derived or “virtual” geometry, in conjunction with a powerful parts positioning module that simulates the placement of the varianced part in a fixture represented by the datum surfaces. The reliance on virtual geometry as an intermediate representation, permits the concise representation of not only the datum reference frame types defined in the standard, but also allows for any arbitrary datum reference frames constructed by the user.

Abstract:
For most industrial applications, design and analysis is typically performed using only a nominal geometry at nominal operating conditions due to limitations in the design process, analysis capability, and computational resources. In the present study, full lifecycle management and assessment during the early stages of design was conducted through the completion of a robustness assessment, in addition to performance analysis, of a prediffuser flow path, strut, and frame in order to identify significant factors influencing performance and cost. Application of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) was utilized to capture the critical-to-quality customer requirements in relation to the functional requirements of the component. Key sources of variation influencing the component were then identified and prioritized based on legacy component service and design experience using robust design (also know as design for process excellence, or design for six sigma) tools. Results from the application of the robust design tools indicate that manufacturing and usage variations are likely to have a larger impact on the aerodynamic performance than structural performance. Aerodynamic analysis of the prediffuser and strut was performed to quantify the sensitivity of the aerodynamic performance to manufacturing and usage variations. Full three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis was performed using a series of latin hypercube design of experiments to statistically quantify the variation in the aerodynamic performance metrics of the prediffuser with a strut. It was determined that manufacturing and/or usage variations had a significant impact on the variation in aerodynamic performance. In addition, for some cases the variation in aerodynamic performance resulting from variations in noise factors was greater than those resulting from changes in the strut design parameters.

Revealed are some sources of inaccuracy and methods are proposed to be decreased. An important step is done for the future performing of uncertainty and sensitivity analysis in the frame of the OECD/NEA activities.

Abstract:
A new cascade wind tunnel has been designed and constructed at the LSU Wind Tunnel Laboratory. The objective was to develop a versatile test facility, suitable for a wide range of experimental studies and measurements on turbine airfoils, especially with regards to film-cooling incorporating realistic unsteady effects due to passing wakes. The test section consists of a four passage linear cascade composed of three full blades and two shaped wall blades. The 2D blade shape profile of the cascade is a high-lift, low-pressure turbine L1A profile provided by the US Air Force Research Laboratories (AFRL), with a 152-mm axial chord. The Reynolds number based on the axial chord length at the nominal freestream velocity of 50 ms−1 is 500,000. A conveyor-based system was designed and fabricated to simulate the passing wakes of the upstream vanes (or blades) on the test blades (or vanes) depending on which airfoil types are put on the stationary frame and the moving frame of the conveyor. The original implementation uses blade profiles on the stationary frame and thick plate wake generators on the translating frame. Results are presented from hot-wire surveys conducted to characterize and qualify the velocity and turbulence intensity distributions and associated spectral characteristics at the cascade test section inlet, in the wake of the vanes and in the wake of the test blade. A blade instrumented with 123 pressure taps was used to acquire static pressure profiles of the cascade central blade, which were compared to the ones from the nominal airfoil design as well as to those obtained from a CFD simulation of the cascade flow. Incoming velocity and temperature profiles were found to be uniform to within a few percentage points, and the pressure coefficient distribution was found to be in good agreement with design values. The passage periodicity of the conveyor-belt-driven, flat-plates was verified and their wake was characterized. These results verified that the cascade wind tunnel operates according to design, thus proving to be a reliable test-bed for film cooling studies with and without unsteady wake effects. The design also incorporates an in-house-designed, miniature periscopic and adjustable laser sheet generating system integrated within the “dummy” blades to enable Particle Image Velocimetry measurements in the intra-blade domain.

Abstract:
<p>Modern tall buildings are increasingly being built in slender and complex forms. Limiting wind- induced vibrations of these buildings to meet serviceability criteria is increasingly challenging due to their flexibility. Tuned mass dampers (TMDs) are often incorporated into tall buildings for mitigating excessive wind-induced vibrations. However, traditional TMDs have several disadvantages including the necessity of an immense mass, occupation of a significant volume of interior space, and effectiveness over only a narrow band of vibration frequencies. This paper describes a proposed alternative system for alleviating wind-induced vibrations using a network of active moment connections. For buildings with a moment frame lateral force-resisting system, in- frame stiffness is concentrated at the fixity of the beam-to-column connections. The rotational stiffness of conventional bolted or welded moment connections is nominally static; the proposed active moment connections possess rotational stiffness that can be adjusted in response to a signal. Adjustment of the rotational stiffness of multiple beam-to-column moment connections positioned throughout a moment frame can allow for alteration of the global frame lateral stiffness, allowing greater control over a building’s dynamic response to wind loading. The proposed system envisions a network of active moment connections installed strategically throughout a building’s moment frame. The active moment connections are controlled by a central processing unit (CPU) that regulates the stiffness of the frame in real-time in response to input from external sensors mounted to the building, such as anemometers or wind pressure sensors. In this way, wind-induced vibrations can be mitigated by the CPU constantly regulating the global moment frame lateral stiffness. A numerical case study is presented for a portal-framed structure possessing active moment connections and loaded under service-level wind loads. The dynamic performance of the frame with and without the active moment connections is compared to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system for alleviating wind-induced vibrations.</p>

Abstract:
The creep response of the single-crystal nickel-base superalloy MD2 has been investigated in this study. A set of constant load creep experiments was performed loaded in the nominal [001], [011] and [111] crystal orientations. A crystal plasticity - creep relaxation model, based on thermomechanical fatigue stress relaxation tests, was benchmarked to simulate the creep behaviour. The responses from the model were then compared to the results obtained during the creep tests. From the comparison it could observed that a trend for the [001] crystal orientation is present. A relative creep response between the simulations and experiments could be observed for the different stress levels. At high and increasing stress levels the relative relation is increasing. Under a certain stress level the relative relation is instead increasing for decreasing stress levels. This relative relation arises from the stress relaxation evaluation process, in which the creep parameters are defined, presumably due to the high stress relaxation that is present in the initial time frame. No trend was seen for the [011] and [111] crystal orientations. A discrepancy between the simulations and experiments was still obtained, also related to the high stress relaxation of the initial time frame.

Abstract:
Abstract In the context of GEN-IV heavy liquid metal-cooled reactors safety studies, the coolability of the Fuel Assembly in nominal condition is of central interest. The Advanced Lead-cooled Fast Reactor European Demonstrator (ALFRED) is a 300 MWth pool-type reactor aimed at demonstrating the safe deployment of the Generation IV LFR technology. The ALFRED design, currently being developed by the Fostering ALFRED Construction international consortium, is based on prototypical solutions intended to be used in the next generation of lead-cooled Small Modular Reactors. Within the scope of FALCON and in the frame of investigating the thermal-hydraulics of the ALFRED core, a CFD computational model of the general Fuel Assembly (FA) is built looking for the assessment of its thermal field in nominal flow conditions both for the average FA and the hottest one. Starting from the experience in this kind of simulations and in experimental work, the whole model of the ALFRED Fuel Assembly is first presented and calculation of flow and temperature field in nominal conditions is carried out. Results showed that the thermal hydraulic field predicted in the average FA by the code is in good agreement with analytical correlations and the temperature field on the pin clad is acceptable for clad material temperature constraint. About the results on the hot FA test case, the CFD results highlighted a peak temperature on the clad close to the clad temperature constraint. This result led to an upgrade of the mass flow distribution among the FA for achieving a 20% mass flow increase in the hottest one that guarantees higher temperature margin on the clad.

Abstract:
This report is one of a series of reports documenting the methods and findings of a multi-year, multi-disciplinary project coordinated by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER) and funded by the California Earthquake Authority (CEA). The overall project is titled “Quantifying the Performance of Retrofit of Cripple Walls and Sill Anchorage in Single-Family Wood-Frame Buildings,” henceforth referred to as the “PEER–CEA Project.” The overall objective of the PEER–CEA Project is to provide scientifically based information (e.g., testing, analysis, and resulting loss models) that measure and assess the effectiveness of seismic retrofit to reduce the risk of damage and associated losses (repair costs) of wood-frame houses with cripple wall and sill anchorage deficiencies as well as retrofitted conditions that address those deficiencies. Tasks that support and inform the loss-modeling effort are: (1) collecting and summarizing existing information and results of previous research on the performance of wood-frame houses; (2) identifying construction features to characterize alternative variants of wood-frame houses; (3) characterizing earthquake hazard and ground motions at representative sites in California; (4) developing cyclic loading protocols and conducting laboratory tests of cripple wall panels, wood-frame wall subassemblies, and sill anchorages to measure and document their response (strength and stiffness) under cyclic loading; and (5) the computer modeling, simulations, and the development of loss models as informed by a workshop with claims adjustors. This report is a product of Working Group 4 (WG4): Testing, whose central focus was to experimentally investigate the seismic performance of retrofit and existing cripple walls. Amongst the body of reports from WG4, in the present report, a suite of four small cripple wall test phases, in total 28 specimens, are cross compared with varied exterior finishes, namely stucco (wet) and non-stucco (dry) exterior finishes. Details representative of era specific construction, specifically the most vulnerable pre-1960s construction are of predominant focus in the present effort. Experiments involved imposition of combined vertical loading and quasi-static reversed cyclic lateral load onto cripple walls of 12 ft in length and 2 ft or 6 ft in height. All specimens in this report were constructed with the same boundary conditions and tested with the same vertical load. Parameters addressed in this report include: wet exterior finishes (stucco over framing, stucco over horizontal lumber sheathing, and stucco over diagonal lumber sheathing); and dry exterior finishes (horizontal siding, horizontal siding over diagonal sheathing, and T1-11 wood structural panels) with attention towards cripple wall height and the retrofit condition. The present report provides only a brief overview of the test program and setup; whereas a series of three prior reports present results of test groupings nominally by exterior finish type (wet versus dry). As such, herein the focus is to cross compare key measurements and observations of the in-plane seismic behavior of all 28 specimens.
