Abstract:
The article discusses the controversy between Semyon Frank and the publicist Semyon Lurye: the discussion between thinkers has become a rare example of a constructive dialogue unfolded around the collection of articles about the Russian intelligentsia of the early 20th century “Vekhi”. Responding to Lurye’s Criticism, Frank wrote an article “Culture and Religion”, Which in many ways better represents Frank’s views of that time then the article “The Ethics and Nihilism” from the collection “Vekhi”. The author analyses in detail the questions posed to Frank by Lurye and shows that the answers he gave in subsequent years became strikingly different from those contained in his earlier works. Moreover, in later years, in the books “The Downfall of Idols” and “Reality and Man” his answers to the questions posed by Lurye began to resemble the views of his opponent rather than his own, set in 1908. This is especially well observed in the analyses of Lurye’s response article “Ideas and Life”, Which Frank has already left without a direct answer. An analysis of controversy between Frank and Lurye and of the Frank’s views outlined in later works leads the author to the conclusion that this distinct contradiction of views reveals the non-monolithic nature of Franks philosophy as a whole and forces researchers to hierarchize Frank’s legacy, which was non-linear and accompanied by corrections of his mistakes from earlier works.

Rezvykh, Tatyana N. "Simon L. Frank on J.W. Goethe’s Spiritual Personality." RUDN Journal of Philosophy 26, no. 1 (March 29, 2022): 94–109. http://dx.doi.org/10.22363/2313-2302-2022-26-1-94-109.

Abstract:
The paper treats the character and significance of J.W. Goethes personality in Simon L. Franks interpretation. The study is based upon principles of historicism and development; it uses the methods of the unity of historical and logical, comparative-typological and textual methods. The paper demonstrates why the Russian philosopher turns to examine the works of the German thinker and the role of Goethes ideas in becoming of Franks philosophical system. It clarifies Georg Simmels influence on methodological approach to the definition of spiritual personality with respect to the conceptual distinction of objective and subjective culture. The paper also analyses Franks distinction between two types of genii - pure genii of life and purely objective genii, - and applying that method with respect to understand Goethes spiritual personality. Frank was very far from idealising the Goethes particular personality, but he had rather found in what he called the Goethes type an aspiration for the harmonious unity of personal and sobornoye (catholic, universal, communal - Russ.) being. Accomplishing of such a type - as far as he had been capable - was considered by the Russian thinker not only the life purpose of any spiritual personality, but as well as a peculiar prescription against the crisis of the contemporary culture. The paper also reflects on Franks participation (publications and lectures) on occasion to 100 years anniversary, since Goethes death. In appendix, there are lecture notes of Franks lecture 1932, dedicated to Goethes spiritual personality that are published for the first time. The conclusion is made that considering Goethes impact on Simon Frank - as well as any influence, caused by not a systematic philosopher, but an artist-thinker in general - one should take into consideration not only the reception of separate ideas and concepts, but significance of the personality as a whole. It is said about the unique synthesis of living personal development and the objective creative work results.

Abstract:
This article examines the philosophy of Semyon Frank and the theology of Karl Rahner in the light of transcendental themes. It demonstrates that the appeal to transcendental anthropology and to anthropology in general is perceived by Franck and Rahner as a way of renewal of religious metaphysics, avoiding accusations of both «dogmatism» and remoteness from living religious experience. Both thinkers, appealing to the Christian tradition and Western philosophy, interpret the «non-thematic» and «non-conceptual» experience of being as a primordial existential state. In the author’s opinion, Frank and Rahner offer original approaches to the problem of the foundations of religious experience by developing a philosophical theology «from below» with a fundamental focus on phenomenological and transcendental consideration of subjectivity.

Abstract:
Joseph Frank (1918–2013) achieved fame as a literary scholar first with his three-part essay “Spatial Form in Modern Literature” (1945) and then with his five-volume critical biography Dostoevsky (1976–2002). This essay traces his career, emphasizing its divergence from the practices both of New Criticism at its start and of the theory movement in the 1970s and 1980s, and noting the crucial role played by Allen Tate and the Sewanee Review. Unfashionable independence, fidelity to personal fascination, and unremitting effort all play a role in scholarly accomplishment.

Abstract:
The name of Frank Ramsey is universally known amongst combinatorial mathematicians, but our casual mental picture of him can easily be an unimpressive one – the man who almost stumbled across the theorem that now bears his name, thereby anticipating Erdős and Szekeres, who of course gave the proper proof. Such an idea of Ramsey is entirely false: he was an absolutely brilliant man, who would certainly have become even more famous had he not died so young, and who would surely, it could easily be argued, have made yet further remarkable contributions to philosophy, economics and logic – and to combinatorics.
