Abstract:
In studies of engineering, creative competence is becoming more and more important. In order to develop this ability, a three-dimensional modelling workshop called STELLA 3D was designed in collaboration with teachers from fine arts studies, based on the pictorial work of Frank Stella. In this article, a tangible version of this workshop is presented, printed in 3D, which was tested during the 2016-2017 academic year by 31 students in the First Year of Engineering at the University of La Laguna. The data obtained from the experimental group show that the students have increased their creativity values in comparison with the Pre-test, going from a score of 93,8 to 132,0. The resource developed in this work includes QR codes, which enable digital files of the pieces for 3D printing to be downloaded, and makes it possible to replace them in case of loss or breakage.

Contemporary painter Deborah Kass appropriates the forms of post-war masters such as Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, and Frank Stella in her work, but her subject choices are often conscious manifestations of her nostalgic identifications with middlebrow Jewish artists and Broadway musicals. Her radical take on nostalgia draws from lyrics, idiomatic sayings, and iconic Jewish figures to promote a progressive rather than conservative agenda. Kass's performative interventions insert her feminist-Jewish-lesbian self squarely at the center of visual culture's frame and on the stage of art's history.

Abstract:
Summary Colour and space are pervasive topics in both perception and art. This article investigates the role of colour and pattern in relation to space and time in the art works by two artists: Frank Stella, a well-known Post-War American abstract painter, and Pieter Vermeersch, an emerging Belgian abstract painter, representing a contemporary trend to break the barriers between artistic disciplines. While Stella adheres to the Modernist logic of non-illusionistic, non-spatial, non-referential art as object, perceived instantaneously, Vermeersch explores ways to enhance the viewers’ spatial and temporal experiences through complex art installations with multiple objects and architectural elements interacting with each other and with the spaces in which they are embedded. We discuss these major themes in some representative art works, and in the way they are perceived and appreciated by contemporary viewers, investigated in four empirical studies: two laboratory experiments using well-controlled stimuli derived from at works, and two museum studies employing a variety of methods, including mobile eye-tracking and questionnaires.

Abstract:
This article illustrates how the paintings of visual artists activate multiple brain processes that contribute to their conscious perception. Paintings of different artists may activate different combinations of brain processes to achieve their artist’s aesthetic goals. Neural models of how advanced brains see have characterized various of these processes. These models are used to explain how paintings of Jo Baer, Banksy, Ross Bleckner, Gene Davis, Charles Hawthorne, Henry Hensche, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Jules Olitski, and Frank Stella may achieve their aesthetic effects. These ten painters were chosen to illustrate processes that range from discounting the illuminant and lightness anchoring, to boundary and texture grouping and classification, through filling-in of surface brightness and color, to spatial attention, conscious seeing, and eye movement control. The models hereby clarify how humans consciously see paintings, and paintings illuminate how humans see.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In his search to create ‘instantaneously capturable’ paintings, Frank Stella started to use Day-Glo alkyd paints as a vehicle to communicate his simple, striped designs. Up till now, art criticism has neglected the visual impact of these fluorescent colours on this concept of ‘instantaneous art’. By presenting participants with Stella’s designs (fluorescent and conventional variants) for short presentation times (8 to 12 ms), we aimed to find out whether fluorescent colour combinations are seen faster (i.e., yield better performance in identifying the specific design) than their conventional counterparts. In general, participants were very good in identifying the correct design among distractors, which means that the pattern and colour combinations based on Stella’s work do seem to be ‘instantaneously capturable’. However, Stella’s formula for ‘instantaneous’ paintings is not identical for the different combinations. When exploring fluorescence in combination with other aspects of the design (colour and pattern), we found two effects that seemed to predict performance. First, performance seemed to depend on specific design patterns. Second, fluorescence seemed to interact with specific colour combinations in predicting performance. The red/yellow designs yielded better performance for the fluorescent variants, while the opposite was found for the green/orange designs. Contrast differences in luminance between the two colours of each colour combination might explain part of the results. On the other hand, the effect of fluorescent colours might have been watered down by the confusion between the hand-printed fluorescent colours and the computer display used for the identification task, which only showed conventional colours.

Abstract:
Although Frank Stella intended to create flat, illusion-less Irregular Polygons paintings, it is not uncommon to experience the illusion of colour depth, based on the interaction between their fluorescent and conventional colours. Some critics praised these artworks’ flatness, while others described odd depth experiences that they categorised as a new kind of illusion. In order to provide a correct reading of these works and to reassess their art historical significance, a scientific case study regarding this colour-depth effect imposes itself. This article discusses an experiment in which we determined whether twenty artists, twenty art historians and twenty laypeople experienced fluorescent colours as protruding, receding or flat in combination with conventional colours. We additionally looked at whether they still perceived colour depth when all fluorescent colours were replaced with their conventional variants. All participants observed fifteen designs, which they had to rate according to the perceived depth of each coloured region with a number between −3 (strongly receding) and +3 (strongly protruding). The results revealed that most participants experience fluorescent regions as strongly protruding, unlike all conventional colours, which were rated as much less protruding. When a fluorescent colour was swapped with a conventional variant, all participants experienced significantly less depth. The differences between the subject groups were statistically negligible when looking at the mean depth ratings for both colour types. However, we discovered that artists experienced more contrast effects, as they gave different ratings to different panels (of identical colour and shape) in the same design, depending on their position.

Abstract:
There is a distinct visual process that triggers the perception of illusory surfaces and contours along the intersections of aligned, zigzag line patterns. Such illusory contours and surfaces are qualitatively different from illusory contours of the Kanizsa type. The illusory contours and surfaces in this case are not the product of occlusion and do not imply occlusion of one surface by another. Rather, the aligned angles in the patterns are combined by the visual system into the perception of a fold or a 3-D corner, as of stairs on a staircase or a wall ending on a floor. The depth impression is ambiguous and reversible like the Necker cube. Such patterns were used by American Indian artists of the Akimel O'odham (Pima) tribe in basketry, and also by modern European and American artists like Josef Albers, Bridget Riley, Victor Vasarely, and Frank Stella. Our research aims to find out what manipulations of the visual image affect perceived depth in such patterns in order to learn about the perceptual mechanisms. Using paired comparisons, we find that human observers perceive depth in such patterns if, and only if, lines in adjacent regions of the patterns join to form angles, and also if, and only if, the angles are aligned precisely to be consistent with a fold or 3-D corner. The amount of perceived depth is graded, depending on the steepness and the density of angles in the aligned-angle pattern. The required precision of the alignment implies that early retinotopic visual cortical areas may be involved in this perceptual behavior, but the linkage of form with perceived depth suggests involvement of higher cortical areas as well.

Abstract:
The observed spectrum of a galaxy is the composite spectrum of its stellar population broadened by the stellar velocities. Our topic is the extraction of the broadening functions (i.e., line-of-sight velocity distributions) from spectra. In the past, observers tried to extract only mean velocities and dispersions. But recent work on deconvolution [Franx & Illingworth ApJL327, L55 (1989), Bender A&A229, 441 (1990), Rix & White MNRAS254, 389 (1992), van der Marel & Franx ApJ, to appear] shows that more information can be recovered. The general idea is to compare a galaxy spectrum with one or more stellar ‘template’ spectra; but various methods differ widely in the treatment of noise and the control of sources of systematic error.

The general properties of elliptical planetary nebulae have been very successfully explained by a class of hydrodynamic models known as interacting stellar winds (ISW). PNs also contain a variety of microstructures (Anase,“FLIERs”) whose origins have remained puzzling. We (Frank, Balick, & Livio 1996) have shown that such flows will naturally occur in the ISW model in momentum-conserving PPN bubbles, and that they can naturally account for the formation of jets and ansae in a way consistent with extant observations.

ABSTRACT We present an orbit-based method of combining stellar and cold gas kinematics to constrain the dark matter profile of early-type galaxies. We apply this method to early-type galaxy NGC 2974, using Pan-STARRS imaging and SAURON stellar kinematics to model the stellar orbits, and introducing H i kinematics from VLA observation as a tracer of the gravitational potential. The introduction of the cold gas kinematics shows a significant effect on the confidence limits of especially the dark halo properties: we exclude more than $95{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of models within the 1σ confidence level of Schwarzschild modelling with only stellar kinematics, and reduce the relative uncertainty of the dark matter fraction significantly to $10{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ within 5Re. Adopting a generalized Navarro–Frenk–White (NFW) dark matter profile, we measure a shallow cuspy inner slope of $0.6^{+0.2}_{-0.3}$ when including the cold gas kinematics in our model. We cannot constrain the inner slope with the stellar kinematics alone.

An accretion disk is formed when matter with angular momentum is flowing on a gravitating object (as e.g. a white dwarf, a neutron star, a young stellar object, or a black bole). It radiates because the transport of angular momentum (required for the matter to reach the central object) necessarily implies the conversion of potential energy into a form of energy that corresponds to higher entropy. Many aspects of the physics (as e.g. the mechanism for the heat generation) are not yet well understood but they are presently one of the centers of astronomical interest (see e.g. the books by Frank, King, and Raine, 1992, or by Wheeler, 1993).

Abstract:
We present a work in progress investigating the radial distributions of dark and luminous matter in local bright spiral galaxies spanning a range of Hubble types. the distributions are derived from multiband imaging (BVRJHK) predominately from the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey (OSUBSGS) and rotation curves from the literature. We use stellar colour-MIL relationships from Bell & de Jong (2001, ApJ, 550, 212) to create radial stellar mass surface density profiles for each of our galaxies. These profiles are used to create rotation curves for the stellar component; gas masses are derived from HI when available. the resulting stellar and gas mass rotation curves are compared to observed (total mass) rotation curves, and the rotation due to dark matter is determined for each galaxy. Fits to Navarro, Frenk, & White (1996, ApJ, 462, 563; NFW) halo profiles are shown. We present this analysis for 2 example galaxies from our sample of nearly 50. We will use this data to investigate correlations between these mass components and physical properties of galaxies.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We present an analysis of the formation and chemical evolution of stellar haloes around (a) Milky Way analogue (MWA) galaxies and (b) galaxy clusters in the L-Galaxies 2020 semi-analytic model of galaxy evolution. Observed stellar halo properties are better reproduced when assuming a gradual stripping model for the removal of cold gas and stars from satellites, compared to an instantaneous stripping model. The slope of the stellar mass–metallicity relation for MWA stellar haloes is in good agreement with that observed in the local Universe . This extends the good agreement between L-Galaxies 2020 and metallicity observations from the gas and stars inside galaxies to those outside. Halo stars contribute on average only ∼0.1 per cent of the total circumgalactic medium enrichment by z = 0 in MWAs, ejecting predominantly carbon produced by asymptotic giant branch stars. Around a quarter of MWAs have a single ‘significant progenitor’ with a mean mass of ∼$2.3\times {}10^{9}\, \rm {M}_{\odot }$, similar to that measured for Gaia Enceladus. For galaxy clusters, L-Galaxies 2020 shows good correspondence with observations of stellar halo mass fractions, but slightly overpredicts stellar masses. Assuming a Navarro–Frenk–White profile for the stellar halo mass distribution provides the best agreement. On average, the intracluster stellar component is responsible for 5.4 per cent of the total intracluster medium iron enrichment, exceeding the contribution from the brightest cluster galaxy by z = 0. We find that considering gradual stripping of satellites and realistic radial profiles is crucial for accurately modelling stellar halo formation on all scales in semi-analytic models.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT We investigate the internal structure of elliptical galaxies at z ∼ 0.2 from a joint lensing–dynamics analysis. We model Hubble Space Telescope images of a sample of 23 galaxy–galaxy lenses selected from the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) survey. Whereas the original SLACS analysis estimated the logarithmic slopes by combining the kinematics with the imaging data, we estimate the logarithmic slopes only from the imaging data. We find that the distribution of the lensing-only logarithmic slopes has a median 2.08c ± 0.03 and intrinsic scatter 0.13 ± 0.02, consistent with the original SLACS analysis. We combine the lensing constraints with the stellar kinematics and weak lensing measurements, and constrain the amount of adiabatic contraction in the dark matter (DM) haloes. We find that the DM haloes are well described by a standard Navarro–Frenk–White halo with no contraction on average for both of a constant stellar mass-to-light ratio (M/L) model and a stellar M/L gradient model. For the M/L gradient model, we find that most galaxies are consistent with no M/L gradient. Comparison of our inferred stellar masses with those obtained from the stellar population synthesis method supports a heavy initial mass function (IMF) such as the Salpeter IMF. We discuss our results in the context of previous observations and simulations, and argue that our result is consistent with a scenario in which active galactic nucleus feedback counteracts the baryonic-cooling-driven contraction in the DM haloes.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We combine proper motion data from Gaia EDR3 and HST with line-of-sight velocity data to study the stellar kinematics of the ω Cen globular cluster. Using a steady-state, axisymmetric dynamical model, we measure the distribution of both the dark and luminous mass components. Assuming both Gaussian and Navarro–Frenk–White mass profiles, depending on the data set, we measure an integrated mass of ≲106 M⊙ within the ω Cen half-light radius for a dark component that is distinct from the luminous stellar component. For the HST and radial velocity data, models with a non-luminous mass component are strongly statistically preferred relative to a stellar mass-only model with a constant mass-to-light ratio. While a compact core of stellar remnants may account for a dynamical mass up to ∼5 × 105 M⊙, they likely cannot explain the higher end of the range. This leaves open the possibility that this non-luminous dynamical mass component comprises non-baryonic dark matter. In comparison to the dark matter distributions around dwarf spheroidal galaxies, the ω Cen dark mass component is much more centrally concentrated. Interpreting the non-luminous mass distribution as particle dark matter, we use these results to obtain the J-factor, which sets the sensitivity to the annihilation cross-section. For the data sets considered, the range of median J-factors is ∼1022−1024 GeV2 cm−5, which is larger than that obtained for any dwarf spheroidal galaxy.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We use N-body simulations to model the tidal evolution of dark matter-dominated dwarf spheroidal galaxies embedded in cuspy Navarro-Frenk-White subhaloes. Tides gradually peel off stars and dark matter from a subhalo, trimming it down according to their initial binding energy. This process strips preferentially particles with long orbital times, and comes to an end when the remaining bound particles have crossing times shorter than a fraction of the orbital time at pericentre. The properties of the final stellar remnant thus depend on the energy distribution of stars in the progenitor subhalo, which in turn depends on the initial density profile and radial segregation of the initial stellar component. The stellar component may be completely dispersed if its energy distribution does not extend all the way to the subhalo potential minimum, although a bound dark remnant may remain. These results imply that ‘tidally limited’ galaxies, defined as systems whose stellar components have undergone substantial tidal mass-loss, neither converge to a unique structure nor follow a single tidal track. On the other hand, tidally limited dwarfs do have characteristic sizes and velocity dispersions that trace directly the characteristic radius (rmx) and circular velocity (Vmx) of the subhalo remnant. This result places strong upper limits on the size of satellites whose unusually low velocity dispersions are often ascribed to tidal effects. In particular, the large size of kinematically cold ‘feeble giant’ satellites like Crater 2 or Antlia 2 cannot be explained as due to tidal effects alone in the Lambda Cold Dark Matter scenario.

Abstract:
Aims. We present the first three-dimensional internal motions for individual stars in the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy. Methods. By combining first-epoch Hubble Space Telescope observations and second-epoch Gaia Data Release 2 positions, we measured the proper motions of 149 sources in the direction of Draco. We determined the line-of-sight velocities for a sub-sample of 81 red giant branch stars using medium resolution spectra acquired with the DEIMOS spectrograph at the Keck II telescope. Altogether, this resulted in a final sample of 45 Draco members with high-precision and accurate 3D motions, which we present as a table in this paper. Results. Based on this high-quality dataset, we determined the velocity dispersions at a projected distance of ∼120 pc from the centre of Draco to be σR = 11.0−1.5+2.1 km s−1, σT = 9.9−3.1+2.3 km s−1 and σLOS = 9.0−1.1+1.1 km s−1 in the projected radial, tangential, and line-of-sight directions. This results in a velocity anisotropy β = 0.25−1.38+0.47 at r ≳ 120 pc. Tighter constraints may be obtained using the spherical Jeans equations and assuming constant anisotropy and Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) mass profiles, also based on the assumption that the 3D velocity dispersion should be lower than ≈1/3 of the escape velocity of the system. In this case, we constrain the maximum circular velocity Vmax of Draco to be in the range of 10.2−17.0 km s−1. The corresponding mass range is in good agreement with previous estimates based on line-of-sight velocities only. Conclusions. Our Jeans modelling supports the case for a cuspy dark matter profile in this galaxy. Firmer conclusions may be drawn by applying more sophisticated models to this dataset and with new datasets from upcoming Gaia releases.

Abstract:
The Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) on-board the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite has provided striking new images of the Galactic bulge at effective wavelengths of 1.25, 2.2, 3.5, and 4.9μ (Hauser 1993, plate 3; Arendt et al. 1994; Weiland et al. 1994). The bulge, defined here as the spheroid within the |l| < 20° and |b| < 10° region around the Galactic center, and its stellar content have been subjects of considerable interest since they contain important clues about the dynamical and star-formation history of our Galaxy. The morphology of the Galactic bulge is much harder to ascertain than that of bulges in many external galaxies, because of our location in the Galactic plane amid the obscuration by interstellar dust. In spite of this difficulty, there has recently been an accumulating body of evidence that the stellar distribution in the bulge is bar shaped, i.e. that the bulge is not rotationally symmetric in the plane of the disk (see Blitz 1993 for a review of the subject). The existence of a bar in our Galaxy would have important implications for the dynamics of the Galaxy. A bar would provide a mechanism for sweeping gas from the disk into the Galactic center “feeding” a central black hole (e.g. Shlosman, Frank, & Begelman 1989). It would also provide a mechanism for generating spiral arms, and a basis for estimating the mass of the halo relative to that of the disk (e.g. Combes & Sanders 1981 and references therein).

In this work we study the effect of the accretion of dark matter into neutron stars. We have considered two relativistic nuclear effective models for the structure of neutron stars (ZM and Boguta-Bodmer) and three profiles for dark matter (Navarro-Frenk-White, Einasto, and Burkert). We have analyzed the effects of these effective models and profiles in the equation of state of nuclear matter and in the capture rate of dark matter by neutron stars. Our results confirm that the capture rate of dark matter by neutron stars is strongly model dependent. This leads to more questions than answers due to the uncertainties in the significance of the results, requiring therefore for its elucidation new signatures of capture of dark matter by these stellar objects.

AbstractMany recent integral field spectroscopy (IFS) survey teams have used stellar kinematic maps combined with imaging to statistically infer the underlying distributions of galaxy intrinsic shapes. With now several IFS samples at our disposal, the method, which was originally proposed by M. Franx and collaborators in 1991, is gaining in popularity, having been so far applied to ATLAS3D, SAMI, MANGA and MASSIVE. We present results showing that a commonly assumed relationship between dynamical and intrinsic shape alignment does not hold in Illustris, affecting our ability to recover accurate intrinsic shape distributions. A further implication is that so-called “prolate rotation”, where the bulk of stars in prolate galaxies are thought to rotate around the projected major axis, is a misnomer.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Galaxy clusters are excellent probes to study the effect of environment on galaxy formation and evolution. Along with high-quality observational data, accurate cosmological simulations are required to improve our understanding of galaxy evolution in these systems. In this work, we compare state-of-the-art observational data of massive galaxy clusters ($\gt 10^{14}\, \textrm {M}_{\odot }$) at different redshifts (0 < z < 1.5) with predictions from the Hydrangea suite of cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of 24 massive galaxy clusters ($\gt 10^{14}\, \textrm {M}_{\odot }$ at z = 0). We compare three fundamental observables of galaxy clusters: the total stellar mass-to-halo mass ratio, the stellar mass function, and the radial mass density profile of the cluster galaxies. In the first two of these, the simulations agree well with the observations, albeit with a slightly too high abundance of $M_\star \lesssim 10^{10} \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ galaxies at z ≳ 1. The Navarro–Frenk–White concentrations of cluster galaxies increase with redshift, in contrast to the decreasing dark matter (DM) halo concentrations. This previously observed behaviour is therefore due to a qualitatively different assembly of the smooth DM halo compared to the satellite population. Quantitatively, we, however, find a discrepancy in that the simulations predict higher stellar concentrations than observed at lower redshifts (z < 0.3), by a factor of ≈2. This may be due to selection bias in the simulations, or stem from shortcomings in the build-up and stripping of their inner satellite halo.

ABSTRACT We determine the inner density profiles of massive galaxy clusters (M200 > 5 × 1014 M⊙) in the Cluster-EAGLE (C-EAGLE) hydrodynamic simulations, and investigate whether the dark matter density profiles can be correctly estimated from a combination of mock stellar kinematical and gravitational lensing data. From fitting mock stellar kinematics and lensing data generated from the simulations, we find that the inner density slopes of both the total and the dark matter mass distributions can be inferred reasonably well. We compare the density slopes of C-EAGLE clusters with those derived by Newman et al. for seven massive galaxy clusters in the local Universe. We find that the asymptotic best-fitting inner slopes of ‘generalized’ Navarro–Frenk–White (gNFW) profiles, γgNFW, of the dark matter haloes of the C-EAGLE clusters are significantly steeper than those inferred by Newman et al. However, the mean mass-weighted dark matter density slopes of the simulated clusters are in good agreement with the Newman et al. estimates. We also find that the estimate of γgNFW is very sensitive to the constraints from weak lensing measurements in the outer parts of the cluster and a bias can lead to an underestimate of γgNFW.
