Abstract:

The conclusion of the Franco-German armistice in June 1940, followed by the severing of Franco-British diplomatic relations less than two weeks later, has been viewed by historians as the end of Anglo-French cooperation against the Nazi war machine and the beginning of a resurgence in tensions between two historical rivals. However, my research argues that in the days and weeks surrounding the French defeat the British government followed a policy of continuity in its depictions of the Anglo-French relationship. It did so by publically distancing the bulk of the metropolitan French population from Marshal Philippe Pétain’s government. Shining a light on these British policies provides new insights into a number of crucial points. First: the assumption that once victory was achieved, France would assume a place in the victor’s circle. Maintaining, rhetorically at least, the indivisibility of the French population with British war aims was thus crucial to the survival of the long-term and ultimately post-war Anglo-French relationship. Second: these early claims of the non-representativeness of Pétain’s government are important because they suggest that the construction of the French myth of resistance began much earlier and was in fact born out of the idea of Anglo-French cooperation rather than conflict.

Abstract:

The functions and meanings of the global discourse of American and British rock in national literatures have hardly been studied so far. This article focuses on the very interesting case of Spanish literature after Franco. The central question is: How has rock functioned in the literature of the new Spain, both as intertext and as cultural memory? To be more specific, the main purpose of this contribution is to study the presence, functions and meanings of rock in the narratives of two leading authors of two generations of post-Franco novelists: Antonio Muñoz Molina (1956) and Ray Loriga (1967). Particular attention will be paid to the complicated processes of memory and oblivion articulated by explicit and implicit references to rock in the pivotal novels El jinete polaco (Muñoz Molina 1991) and Héroes (Loriga 1993), and to their functions and meanings in the historical-cultural process of memory and trauma in post-Franco Spain.

Abstract:

Because the Anglophone historiography has tended to marginalize the French contribution to the allied chemical war during the Great War 1914-1918, this study has attempted to re-balance the historical narrative by emphasizing the collective nature and importance of this joint Franco-British enterprise. By interrogating a raft of under-utilized primary evidence in the French and British archives, elements of the two armies’ defensive and offensive gas warfare performance have been reassessed through the co-operation prism. The investigation demonstrates how closely, comprehensively, and effectively the two allies worked together in chemical weapon production and exchange, research and development, anti-gas protection, and indirect battlefield applications.

Abstract:

In this thesis patterns of working hours in large-scale grocery retailing in Britain and France are compared. The research is carried out using cross-national comparative methodology, and the analysis is based on information derived from secondary sources and empirical research in large-scale grocery retailing involving employers and trade unions at industry level and case studies at outlet level. The thesis begins by comparing national patterns of working hours in Britain and France over the post-war period. Subsequently, a detailed comparison of working hours in large-scale grocery retailing in Britain and France is carried out through the analysis of secondary sources and empirical data. Emphasis is placed on analyzing part-time working hours. They are contrasted and compared at national level and explained in terms of supply and demand factors. The relationships between the structuring of, and satisfaction with, working hours and factors determining women's integration in the workforce in Britain and France are investigated. Part-time hours are then compared and contrasted in large-scale grocery retailing in the context of the analysis of working hours. The relationship between the structuring of working hours and satisfaction with them is examined in both countries through research with women part-timers in case study outlets. The cross-national comparative methodology is used to examine whether dissimilar national contexts in Britain and France have led to different patterns of working hours in large-scale grocery retailing. The principal conclusion is that significant differences are found in the length, organization and flexibility of working hours and that these differences can be attributed to dissimilar socio-economic, political, and cultural contexts in the two countries.

Au XIX° siècle, les sports modernes constituent, avec le modèle politique de gouvernement parlementaire, « le principal objet d'importation britannique en France » (Robert et Isabelle Tombs). Ce sont les modalités de ces transferts culturels qui nous intéressent ici : cela se traduit à la fois par la diffusion de nouveaux sports (le rugby, le football, le cricket...), mais aussi par la modernisation d’un certain nombre de pratiques ludiques déjà présentes sur le territoire national, à l’instar de l’escrime, du canotage ou du vélocipède. Situé à la confluence de l’histoire des sports en France, de l’histoire des relations franco-britanniques et de l’histoire de la mondialisation des sports modernes, notre travail se veut une contribution à chacun de ces champs : Que nous enseignent les échanges et circulations sportifs à propos des relations franco-britanniques ? En quoi ces frottements culturels permettent-il de mieux saisir les débuts de l’histoire du sport en France ? Dans quelle mesure permettent-ils d’éclairer les mécanismes de la diffusion des sports en général ?Cette histoire socio-culturelle, s’appuyant sur des sources et archives des deux côtés de la Manche, couvre le XIX° siècle : elle débute sous la Restauration qui ouvre une nouvelle ère de relations franco-britanniques, et s’achève avec les débuts de la Première Guerre mondiale. L’étude de ces transferts sportifs met en évidence de multiples circulations et de nombreux passeurs, des succès et des échecs, mais aussi une appropriation originale du système sportif anglais dans l’Hexagone
During the 19th century, modern sports can be considered, along with parliamentary government, as « France's most important import from Britain » (Isabelle and Robert Tombs). This study aims at understanding the ways and means of this cultural transfer. It deals with the diffusion of British sports (cricket, football, rugby…) in France, and it also addresses the modernization of some French games and leisures, such as horse racing, canotage or vélocipède, when they encountered the British sporting model. Our work is a contribution to French sport history, to Franco-British studies, and to the history of modern sports diffusion throughout the world. It relies on a sociocultural approach using sources and archives from both sides of the Channel. It analyses the circulation of practices, the role played by cultural go-betweens, the successes and the failures of transfers, as well as the imitations and changes in the appropriation of British sporting ethos in France

Abstract:

Most interest group analyses focus on the impact of interest group activity in the policymaking process, measured by the coincidence of interest demands and policy outputs. This study contends that the reverse case is important for a more complete understanding of State-interest group relations; it examines the impact of State support programmes on interest group leadership, and provides insights into how the State uses interest groups as agents for social intervention. The analysis shows that State-interest group relations can be affected by State funding programmes in two fundamental ways: first, as policy agents and political actors, interest group leaders can become "captured" in a vicious circle of financial and policy dependency which allows a minimum amount of freedom in community development activities; second, the State can undermine the link established between an interest group organisation and its interest community and, in so doing, hinder its own ability to pursue effective policy action. As a case study, the thesis takes the Federation des Franco-Colombiens (FFC), and shows how British Columbia francophone leaders modified their leadership activities as a result of access to federal government financial and policy support through the Official Languages Policy (1969). Essentially, the FFC grew from a largely local, Church-run community association into a full-fledged secular, bureaucratic, and political organisation. As Franco-Columbian leaders shifted their activity to the government arena as policy agents, they tended to pay less attention to their interest clientele, and thus severely jeopardized the effectiveness of their leadership. The implications of the study touch government, interest group leaders, and political scientists who wish to probe further into State-interest group relations. For the former two, it is crucial to be aware of the potentially negative effects of establishing too close a relationship, especially in those instances where the interest group has a low level of financial autonomy. For the latter, interest group activity should not be perceived as being uni-directional; interest groups are intermediaries in the policy process whose actions vis-à-vis the government and the interest clientele must both be considered for a more complete understanding of their role as societal actors.

Abstract:

This chapter studies British historical writing, tracing its transformations from the end of the war—when, arguably, much of the late nineteenth-century empiricist agenda was still intact, and political history continued to dominate—through signal events such as the founding of a new journal of radical historiography called Past and Present (1952), to the advent of neoconservatism in the 1980s, the puffing up and eventual bursting of the bubble of Franco-American-style quantification, and the advent of the cultural turn. Intertwined in the narratives of structural evolution, as well as generational narratives, one might see another in the growing presence of technology as a force impelling historical method and providing new ways of disseminating research. By 1995, many of Britain’s most successful historians defined themselves as ‘public intellectuals’ or tele-dons commanding a wide audience in ways that no one could have dreamed of in 1945.

Abstract:

In light of the discrepancy between Britain’s and France’s postcolonial security roles in Africa, which seemed already determined half a decade after independence, this book studies the making of the postcolonial security relationship during the transfer of power and the early years of independence (1958–1966). The focus is on West Africa and, more specifically, on Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire. While it was in this subregion that the decolonization wave emerged and the Cold War made its debut in Africa, the newly independent states of Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire rapidly evolved into key players in the postcolonial struggle for Africa. Based on research in fourteen archives in Africa, Europe, and the United States, the book comparatively investigates the establishment of formal defence relations, the disintegration of the Anglo-Nigerian ‘special relationship’ and Franco-Ivorian ‘neocolonial collusion’, the provision of British and French military assistance to their former colonies and the competition they faced from West Germany and Israel respectively, and the Anglo-American partnership in Nigeria and the Franco-American rivalry in Côte d’Ivoire. Through this investigation it becomes evident that, whereas Britain was rapidly and increasingly pushed out of and replaced in the Nigerian security sector by Western competitors, France succeeded in retaining its military foothold and pre-eminence in Côte d’Ivoire. Informed by postcolonial approaches, this book argues that while London’s Cold War blinkers and Paris’s neo-imperial agenda were part of the equation, the postcolonial security relationship was ultimately determined by the Nigerian and Ivorian elites, which in turn responded to their local and regional circumstances against the background of the Cold War in Africa.

Abstract:

This article studies samples of French-language texts produced in Canadian provinces outside Quebec, the aim being to elucidate the questions of narrative identity, the relationships with place and with the English and French languages as these evolve in the literary works. Expression of a fragile and exiguous literary condition, the texts are also narrations of a state beyond the question of dominant and dominated linguistic cultures. The following works are studied: Sauvage-Sauvageon (1984) by Marguerite A. Primeau; Pas pire (1998) by France Daigle; Sex, Lies et les Franco-Manitobains (2001) and Fort Mac (2004) by Marc Prescott. Different geographical corners of Canada are represented: the West, the Atlantic East and the Prairies. In Sauvage-Sauvageon, the story moves between a place of the present (the Canadian West coast in British Columbia) and a number of places of the past: Quebec, Alberta and Europe.

Abstract:

The chapter examines two 1980s children’s television series – Odysseus: The Greatest Hero of Them All (hereafter Odysseus) and Ulysses 31 – which reworked the myths of the Greek hero Odysseus which derive from Homer’s Odyssey, an epic poem. The discussion demonstrates how each programme was shaped by contemporary culture, particularly film, television and animation. In particular, they combined: innovative storytelling techniques (e.g. Odysseus was a Jackanory-style story to camera, written and performed by Tony Robinson with Richard Curtis as co-writer) with creative use of the mode of television and televisual animation (e.g. Ulysses 31 was created by key names in animation and anime: Jean Chalopin, Bernard Deyriès, Nagahama Tadao) and detailed knowledge of The Odyssey and wider Greek myth. The series provide contrasting localised (British) and international (Franco-Japanese) production contexts, but in the UK both programmes were first broadcast in 1985-1986 via the newly created children’s programming format, Children’s BBC, known affectionately as the ‘Broom Cupboard’, in which a studio-presenter addressed child-audiences directly. Odysseus and Ulysses 31 therefore offered sustained engagements with the myths of Odysseus for UK-based children in this decade.
