Abstract:
I this study, we examine human skeletal remains from the church of San Francis of Paola located in the small town of Sant’Angelo di Brolo, in the Italian region of Sicily. The preserved skeletal remains were temporarily transferred from their permanent resting place in the crypt for a macroscopic examination and evaluation. Various established methods were used to determine age at death, gender, stature, any evidence of disease(s) as well as the fact that there was a minimum of 15 individuals. The findings were then subdivided into different groups of pathologies and recorded as individual cases. Amongst which, dental issues and cases of trauma were most prevalent. Additional conditions such as joint disease, congenital, metabolic and multifactorial disorders were also identified. The prevalence of dental decay indicates that the group’s diet consisted largely of carbohydrates, and that their oral hygiene was poor. Furthermore, evidence of trauma and poor healing suggested that the town was isolated from the main medical centres of the island. Severe complications of traumas linked with a loss of movement and overall independence, as well as physical pain, must have had a significant impact on the lives of those affected.

Abstract:
In 2005, during the composing of the Inventory of the Moveable Cultural Heritage of the Church and Monastery of St Francis of Assisi at Krk, three wooden statues were found in the attic. These had once belonged to a lavish Renaissance triptych at the centre of which was a figure of the Virgin (107 x 45 x 27 cm), flanked by the figures of St John the Baptist (c. 105 x 28 x 30 cm), an apostle with a book (c. 93 x 32 x 22 cm), and, in all likelihood, St James the Apostle. A trace of a small left foot in the Virgin’s lap indicates that the original composition was that of the Virgin and Child. It is highly likely that these statues originally belonged to the altar of St James which mentioned by Augustino Valier during his visitation of the Church of St Francis of Assisi in 1579 as having a pala honorifica . Harmonious proportions, fine modelling of the heads, beautifully and confidently carved drapery of the fabrics, together with almost classical gestures, all point to a good master carver who, in this case, sought inspiration in Venetian painting of the 1520s and 1530s. When attempting to find close parallels in the production of Venetian wood-carving workshops from the first half of the sixteenth century, without a doubt the best candidates are two signed statues from the workshop of Paolo Campsa de Boboti: the statue of the Risen Christ from the parish church of St Lawrence at Soave in Italy, dated to 1533, and the statue of the Virgin and Child in a private collection in Italy, dated to 1534. To these one can add a statue from the Gianfranco Luzzetti collection at Florence, which has been attributed to Campsa’s workshop. Judging from all the above, the statues from St Francis’ might be dated to the 1540s. In the parish church of Holy Trinity at Baška is a wooden triptych which, according to a nineteenth-century record, was inscribed with Campsa’s signature and the year 1514. When Bishop Stefanus David visited the Chapel of St Michael at Baška in 1685, he described in detail this wooden and carved palla on the main altar dedicated to St Michael, noting that the altar is under the patronage of the Papić family who had founded it and made considerable donations to it. The high altar in the Church of St Mary Magdalene at Porat, also on the island of Krk, has a polyptych attributed to Girolamo and Francesco da Santa Croce. Until now, it has been dated to 1556 - the year of the dedication of the altar and the church. However, more frequently than not, a number of years could pass between the furnishing of an altar and its dedication. With this in mind and having re-analyzed the paintings, the polyptych can be dated as early as the previous decade. Until now, the Renaissance statue of St Mary Magdalene (105 x 25 x 13 cm), originally part of an altar predella but today housed in the Monastery’s collection, was not discussed in the scholarly literature save for its iconography. Based on the morphological similarities between the statue of St Mary Magdalene and the three statues at Krk, it can be concluded that they were carved by the same master carver. Written sources inform us that after 1541 Paolo Campsa was no longer alive. Great differences between the works signed by Campsa have already been the subject of scholarly debate and it is known that due to high demand, his workshop included a number of highly skilled wood carvers. In the case of Krk, perhaps the master carver was an employee at Campsa’s workshop who outlived him and who, after its closure, went his own way and was considered good enough to be hired by fellow painters from the Santa Croce workshop. Installing a statue in a predella was a rare occurrence in sixteenth-century Croatia and Venice alike. Even in the case of Campsa. Reliefs were used more frequently. However, this arrangement was customary on contemporary flügelaltaren in the trans-Alpine north. It ought to be considered whether this northern altar design might provide a trail which would lead to a more specific location of a possible master carver.

Doctoral thesis, Universitat Ramon Llull, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/110927.

Abstract:
Catalan aesthetics is a relatively young philosophical discipline and one that is barely explored if one considers the abundant artistic production that has been emerging in Catalonia for some time. Francesc de Paula Mirabent i Vilaplana is a remarkable exception in Catalan philosophy, as he managed to reposition Catalan aesthetics within the European debate, even if only on an occasional basis and following the path of French aesthetes. Mirabent is known as one of the disciples of Dr. Serra Hunter, from the University of Barcelona School of Philosophy, and thus for the continuity of a tradition with Scottish roots introduced by Martí d’Eixalà and developed by Llorens i Barba. His initial philosophical studies (“La estética inglesa del s.XVIII”, published in 1927 ) indeed point in this intellectual direction, which some philosophers referred to as the Catalan School of Philosophy or Barcelona School . Dr. Mirabent’s most significant book, “De la Bellesa” , which was published in 1936, nonetheless has a very different bibliography. His immediate references are specifically no longer English or Scottish philosophers, but rather the French aesthetes, among whom two names to be considered later stand out particularly: Victor Basch and Charles Lalo. This study therefore has a two-fold objective: A) From a historical perspective, to reveal hitherto unexplored aspects of Dr. Mirabent’s character, which will assist in interpretation of his philosophical thought: B) To determine the extent to which Mirabent may be considered an author in the French tradition, given the strong influence French aesthetics had on him. Secondarily, and as a consequence of the above objectives, the intention is to show how French philosophy has played an indicative role in the Barcelona School, perhaps silently or not so elaborately as that of British philosophy, yet nonetheless fruitful and stimulating. Over and above the parallels, similarities and conceptual discrepancies with the French philosophers considered, reference shall also be made to a certain methodological, bibliographical and personal affinity with some of them. Hence, Mirabent can be described as having achieved a place among France’s most significant aesthetes of the early twentieth-century.

Abstract:
This work aims to study the fiction written by José Agrippino de Paula, mainly the novels Lugar público e PanAmérica. Our goal is to demonstrate how these works absorbed the Avant-garde literary techniques, especially the so-called Nouveau Roman, that were still not common in the Brazilian fiction prose in the 1960s, the time of their publication. Moreover, with PanAmérica, the author proposes a new way of reading the contemporary mythology molded by mass culture. We believe that even today, the books can be considered both excessive and exceptional. Due to their formal innovations, they escape the traditional Brazilian novels boundaries, which at the same time has relegated them to the margins of our literary history.

Abstract:
From 1986 to 1994, Patrick Chamoiseau and Raphaël Confiant published a series of fictional and non-fictional writings focusing on language issues. Interest in these themes can certainly in part be explained by the "surconscience linguistique" that Lise Gauvin attributes to Francophone authors: a linguistic over-awareness which, in the case of these two Martiniquais writers, may be attributed to their Creole-French diglossia. Although we might believe that the idea of Gauvin is right, it doesn't seem enough to explain why the linguistic theme plays such a central role in Chamoiseau's and Confiant's works. Deeply influenced by Glissant's theories on Creole popular culture and Antillean literature (Le discours antillais), they conceived a "Créolité" poetics based on a primarly identity-based and geopolitical discourse. Declaring the need to build an authentically Creole literary discourse, one that finally expresses the Martiniquais reality, Chamoiseau and Confiant (as well as Bernabé, third and last author of Éloge de la créolité) found the «foundations of [their] being» in orality and its poetics in the Creole language. This belief was maily translated into their works in two ways: by representing the (diglossic) relationships occurring between their first languages (Creole and French) and by representing the Creole parole (orality) and its function. An analysis of our authors' literary and theoretical writings will enable us to show how two works that develop around the same themes and thesis have in fact produced very divergent results, which were perhaps already perceivable in the main ambiguities of their common manifestos.

Abstract:
The critics have already been considerably concerned with the abundant presence of biblical references in Rimbaud’s works. However, the conflicting relation that Rimbaud had with religion often drove critics to mix up Rimbaud’s works with his life. With the support of the linguistic concept of intertextuality, we have analysed the dynamic dialogue between the Bible and Rimbaud’s poetry. Because of our strictly textual point of view, we avoided spiritual considerations and maintained a rigorous distinction between the author and the man. Through the choice of several threads, our analysis has pointed out a deep link between Rimbaud’s poetic project and the intertextual relation that his poetry has with the Bible.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Vallerani, Sara, Elizabeth Storer, and Costanza Torre. Key Considerations: Equitable Engagement to Promote COVID-19 Vaccine Uptake among Undocumented Urban Migrants. SSHAP, May 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/sshap.2022.013.

Full text
Abstract:
This brief sets out key considerations linked to the promotion of COVID-19 vaccine uptake among undocumented migrants residing in Rome, Italy. We focus on strategies to equitably distribute COVID-19 vaccines. Evidence from Italy is applicable to other contexts where vaccine administration is tied to “vaccine passports” or “immunity passes”. Undocumented migrants have been considered as some of the “hardest to reach” groups to engage in COVID-19 vaccination outreach. This brief uses the term undocumented migrant or migrant for brevity, but we refer to people living without formal Italian citizenship, refugee status or right to remain in Italy. This brief explores the everyday context of undocumented migrants lives, and how experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated difficult conditions. It links emerging vulnerabilities to perceptions of vaccines, and we suggest that migrants orientate themselves towards the vaccines within frameworks which prioritise economic survival. In many cases, migrants have accepted a COVID-19 vaccine to access paid employment, yet this has often generated mistrust in the state and healthcare system. Accordingly, this brief considers how vaccines can be distributed equitably to boost trust and inclusion in the post-pandemic world. This brief draws primarily on the ethnographic evidence collected through interviews and observations with undocumented migrants in Rome, along with civil society representatives and health workers between December 2021 and January 2022. This brief was developed for SSHAP by Sara Vallerani (Rome Tre University), Elizabeth Storer (LSE) and Costanza Torre (LSE). It was reviewed by Santiago Ripoll (IDS, University of Sussex), with further reviews by Paolo Ruspini (Roma Tre University) and Eloisa Franchi (Université Paris Saclay, Pavia University). The research was funded through the British Academy COVID-19 Recovery: G7 Fund (COVG7210058). Research was based at the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa, London School of Economics. Vallerani, Sara, Elizabeth Storer, and Costanza Torre. SSHAP, May 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/sshap.2022.025.

Full text
