Abstract:
When scientists become Nobel laureates, they become famous in science and public life, but few studies have examined the nature of their scientific celebrity. This article examines how Scientific American portrayed laureates in order to identify and explain core features of Nobel fame. It examines the portrayals of seven laureates – Francis Crick, Linus Pauling, Hans Bethe, Murray Gell-Mann, Brian Josephson, Philip Anderson and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar – in magazine profiles written between 1992 and 1995 by science writer John Horgan. Its textual analysis finds the scientists are portrayed as combining the sociological characteristics of genius, including enormous productivity and lasting impact, with the representational characteristics of celebrities, such as the merging of public and private lives. Their form of scientific celebrity is grounded in their field-changing research, which is presented as a product of their idiosyncratic personalities. Nobel science is presented as knowledge created by an ultra-elite of exceptional individuals.

Abstract:
The prevailing tendency to make a reconstruction of the historical life of Jesus the starting point for christology runs into two serious difficulties. First, such reconstructions vary greatly among themselves and are largely precarious in what they claim to know about Jesus. Secondly, resting upon the historical-critical method, the adequacy of which in theological terms has now come into serious question, they fail to do justice to the narrative quality of the gospels, which resists simple reduction to history. This article critically surveys the work of Hans Frei, George Lindbeck, David Kelsey, Luke Timothy Johnson and Francis Watson and formulates seven principles attempting to state the appropriate relationship between the gospels and history with regard to christology. It concludes that the starting point for christology must be the canonical gospels. Four related issues are addressed at the end: first the openness of a text to multiple meaning; then three concerns arising, respectively, out of liberation theology, feminist interpretation, and the anti-Jewish slant of the gospels.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract: This paper aims to show that preferential option for the poor is an act of kenosis. Kenosis is often understood as an act of self-emptying. However, in the contemporary context a question arises regarding the absence of human agency and human freedom in the face of the act of self-emptying. Marxism, for example, criticizes Christian morality based on this kind of kenosis as an opium for the poor. On the other hand, liberation theology sometimes places too much emphasis on agency and freedom, so that it is accused of being a Marxist. Pope Francis said that preferential option for the poor is more of a theological category rather than a sociological, philosophical or political one. Through Hans Urs von Balthasar's kenosis theology, the vision of preferential option for the poor has a new meaning. This means that, one must not fall to one of the extremes, either as a passive act or an overly aggressive action. Freedom and agency are understood in a new way in terms of Divine love as seen in the Trinitarian love relationship. The struggle for justice and the suffering of the poor empowers the poor as concrete historical subjects. They are not passive objects deceived by self-emptying.

Abstract:
AbstractFormation constitutes the key link between reception theory, Jauss and scripture. The Bible shapes readers by showing them what lies beyond the self. Hans Robert Jauss (1921–97) remains the effective founder of reception theory or reception history. He was a literary theorist, who specialised in romance literature. Following Hans-Georg Gadamer, he insisted that texts carry ‘a still unfinished meaning’, and focused on their historical influence. The exposition of how communities or thinkers have received texts includes de-familiarisation; sometimes the ‘completion’ of meaning, as in much reader-response theory; and instances of when a text ‘satisfies, surpasses, disappoints, or refutes the expectations’ of readers. Reception theory can often trace continuity in the reception of texts, as well as disjunctions, reversals and surprises. It offers a more disciplined approach to scripture than most reader-response theories. Clearly horizons of expectation play a major role in the interpretation of biblical texts. I suggest six direct parallels with biblical interpretation. (1) Like Francis Watson and others, Jauss rejects any value-neutral objectivism in interpretation. (2) The readers’ horizon of expectation derives partly from earlier readings of the text. (3) Horizons can move and change, and thus transform readers as these change. (4) Biblical genres display all of Jauss’ accounts of the responses of readers. For example, parables of reversal may surpass what the Christian believer expects, or disappoint the unbeliever. (5) Like Gadamer, Jauss emphasises the importance of formulating constructive questions in approaching texts. (6) Jauss’ ‘levels of reading’ correspond closely with Bakhtin's notion of polyphony. I compare Ormond Rush's work on reception and otherness, and Luther's insistence that the Bible often confronts us as our adversary to judge and to transform us. Finally, we illustrate the history of reception from Ulrich Luz on Matthew, from Childs on Exodus, and from my commentaries on 1 Corinthians and 1 and 2 Thessalonians.

Abstract:
The present paper comprises a corpus-based study of translator style, comparing two German translations of the novel The Beautiful and Damned by Francis Scott Fitzgerald. The translations, by Hans-Christian Oeser and Renate Orth-Guttmann, were both published in 1998. The study isolates the linguistic feature of modal particles in which the individual styles of the translators manifest themselves on the textual level and investigates the influence the translators’ microlevel linguistic choices have on the macrolevel of the novel. An electronic corpus was compiled, comprising The Beautiful and Damned and its two translations, both entitled Die Schönen und Verdammten. A quantitative analysis was carried out to discover potential patterns of the use of modal particles by the translators, and the results showed that while both translators use modal particles to the extent and in the general context one would expect, they differ considerably in their choice and use of individual modal particles. The subsequent qualitative analysis takes a pragmatic approach, and discusses the selected modal particle wohl according to its communicative function, its role in speech and thought acts and in the narrative, and in the context of the respective narrative points of view. Finally it is argued that the two translators differ in their translation styles to an extent that affects the novel’s macrolevel in that one translator provides a character study while the other focuses on societal issues.

Abstract:
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES
The French tradition based the sovereignty of the people on the sovereignty of the parliament, being unthinkable any form of control of the legislative acts. The French Constitutional Council was created, through the 1958 Constitution, with the purpose of safeguarding the powers of the Executive in the face of the acts of the legislator. So the simple creation of the Council has already represented a paradigm shift. In the 1970s, major changes were implemented by the 1971 Council decision and the constitutional revision of 1974. They were essential in the evolutionary leap of the process of constitutionalisation of law in France. Before, the Civil Code was seen as the French Constitution, because its stability was much greater than that experienced in French constitutionalism. Thus, the Constitutional Council stands as a body that controls the constitutionality of laws, an authentic Constitutional Court. It was different from the other Constitutional Courts and Supreme Courts, for only providing for a constitutional control prior to the enactment of laws, the application of the regulations of the National Assembly and the Senate, the ratification of international commitments. A posteriori control was only inserted in the Constitution in 2008 and implemented in 2010. The French tradition based on the private law and the lack of control after the enactment of the laws, differentiating it from the North American and German system, made Luís Roberto Barroso assert that in the French system a true constitutional jurisdiction does not exist. Many brazilian doctrinators follow the same position as Barroso. Such an affirmation is the object of this study, whose purpose is to ascertain its veracity by analyzing the Constitutional Council - its composition, functions and decisions; and the characteristics of the models of constitutional jurisdiction pointed out by the doctrine - the North American and the European model. This study will also analyze the characteristics of a constitutional jurisdiction and doctrinal classifications, since the typological method will be used. The sources will be the bibliographic review and the French legal provisions. It will carried out A simple random sample analysis of Council decisions.

Bloomberg, Jennifer Marie Wohlenhaus. "Jean Françaix : L'horloge de flore, an analysis, performance suggestions and a simplified, two-hand reduction of the piano accompaniment." Diss., University of Iowa, 2015. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1934.

Full text
Abstract:
L'horloge de flore (The Flower Clock or Flora's Clock) by Jean Françaix was commissioned by John de Lancie, former principal oboist of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1957. It was completed in 1959 and premiered by Mr. de Lancie and the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1961. Since that time, it has become a staple of the 20th century oboe concerto repertoire. The current piano reduction of Jean Françaix's L'horloge de Flore consists of the full orchestral score in piano score format. Since it has been only minimally edited, it is an extremely difficult accompaniment for a single pianist. Collaborative pianists must make decisions concerning which pitch material to incorporate into an accompaniment. Many oboists have expressed the need for a revised piano accompaniment to make the piece more accessible to pianists and, thus, enable the concerto to be studied and performed more frequently by oboists. The purpose of this document is to further facilitate performance of this work in a recital setting by both professional and student oboists and to encourage student oboists to study the work by revising the piano reduction. In order to do so, it will be necessary to provide commentary and background on similar oboe works by Jean Françaix, provide a theoretical analysis of L'horloge de Flore, offer performance suggestions of the work for the oboist, clearly discuss transcriptional decisions in the revised piano reduction, and create a practical, two-hand piano accompaniment.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to investigate how politics was done at the level of the parliamentary constituencies at the time of the treaty of Amiens 1802-1803. This is achieved through two case studies of the elections in Middlesex and Nottingham, which are investigated as social practices. This thesis argues that understandings of masculinity and national identity, as well as questions about the nature of the constitution and citizen rights were central to participants in the extraparliamentary political process. Collective emotions were also highly important in the process of mobilising political support, and this thesis emphasises that participation in these elections was a collective effort; men and women from all levels of society were significant political actors. Moreover, this thesis demonstrates the importance of competences such as knowledge about the organisation of crowds and political violence in the performance of the election.

Positioned between writing and drawing, the diagram is proposed by John Berger as an alternative strategy for articulating encounters with landscape. A diagrammatic approach offers a schematic vocabulary that can compress time and offer a spatial reading of information. Situated within the contemporary field of direct data visualisation, my practice-led research interprets Berger’s ‘Field’ essay as a guide to producing four field | studies within a suburban park in Canberra. My seasonal investigations demonstrate how applying the conventions of the pictorial list, dot-distribution map, routing diagram and colour-wheel reveals subtle ecological and biographical narratives.

Abstract:
Abstract While predominantly a country of immigration, France also counts with a sizeable population of citizens abroad of around three million individuals (4% of the domestic population). This chapter provides a general overview of France’s diaspora institutions, consular policies and social protection policies for citizens abroad. It describes in detail expatriates’ conditions of eligibility and access to welfare in the areas of unemployment, health care, pensions, family benefits and economic hardship. It shows that France, by European standards, has a comparatively strong level of engagement with its expatriates, particularly in the areas of electoral rights, culture and social protection. This must be understood in the light of France’s colonial history, its continued ambition to be a global actor, and its well-developed domestic welfare state that has increasingly become de-territorialised.

Abstract:
The title of this book -The European Rescue of the Franco Regime- intends to draw the reader’s attention away from traditional narratives. The thesis widely sustained by scholars and reflected in public opinion is that the institutionalized pattern of European integration contributed to isolate and weaken the political regime that generalissimo Francisco Franco established after his victory in the Spanish Civil War (1936-9) and headed until his death in November 1975. In Spain, during the struggle for democracy under and immediately following Franco’s dictatorship, membership in the European Communities became emblematic of a collective desire for democratic consolidation and social modernization, as well as the fastest route to elevate the Spanish standard of living in line with Europe’s most advanced societies. This notion of the Europeanization of Spain has made it difficult to conceive the Spanish policy of the European Communities during the Franco era as anything other than a significant element in the combat against Francoism. It is indisputable that the Axis stigma prevented Francoist Spain’s membership to the European Communities. Yet the absence of membership constitutes neither the beginning nor the end, nor even the most important component of the story. From exclusion, a multiplicity of possibilities sprouted, including active support. Although the rescue concept emerged from the analysis of the Six, it could be extended to Franco Spain. The purpose of the Spanish EEC strategy was to generate material prosperity in Spain to maintain the dictatorship’s grip on the country, not to advance the arrival of democracy.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Bretagne's trust–transparency nexus in France. France is often regarded as a low-trust society due to the political culture of ‘two Frances’. The dyarchic culture stems from the conflict between the church and the state, the centre and periphery, and Paris and the provinces. Thus, the central authority has been contested since France's post-revolution two centuries ago. Moreover, Paris has an undercurrent of political violence wherein power is often won. One of the paradoxical features of French politics is the role of associations in the delivery of public services as it would be subjected to brutal political shifts. The chapter highlights the overwhelming phenomenon of mistrust in France.

Abstract:
To fully understand a technological development one must appreciate social, political and economic factors in addition to the technological components (Hughes, 1991). The systems perspective, asserted by Hughes, implies that technologies cannot be understood in isolation, but only in their contexts, especially in their systemic contexts. This theory is illustrated through an examination of France’s implementation of its nuclear power program in the early 1970’s. Nuclear power provided France with the opportunity to achieve energy independence and, as a result, political control over its energy supply. The scope of this case study is limited to consideration of the socio-technical influences on the rise of nuclear power in France and includes an examination of the technical aspects of the innovation. In considering the socio-technical system encompassing France’s adoption of nuclear power, this case study will contemplate: how France was able to persuade its people to accept nuclear power; what it is about French culture and politics that allowed them to succeed where most other countries have failed; the break throughs that led to the broad commercialisation of nuclear power in France in the 1970’s; and how France achieved its status as one of the world’s top producers of nuclear energy. The time period during which this study is based is limited to the early 1970’s, when France was reliant upon external energy supplies, up until the present day, where nuclear power has become France’s main source of energy, thus contributing to France’s autonomy in terms of its energy supply. This study will not address the issue of nuclear waste or the nuclear power safety debate which is also beyond the scope of this study.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Fatigue analysis becomes more important in the design phase of Francis turbine runners due to the changing requirements on hydropower plants, affected by the increasing amount of volatile energy sources. Francis turbines are operated more often and over longer periods of time at off-design conditions to provide regulating power to the electric grid. The lifetime of a Francis runner depends mainly on the dynamic excitation induced by unsteady pressure pulsations like the rotor-stator interaction or draft tube vortex ropes. An approach using one-way coupled fluid-structure interactions has been developed and is now extended using unsteady CFD simulations as well as harmonic and transient FEM computations. The results are compared to strain gauge measurements on the according high head Francis turbine to validate the overall procedure. The investigations should be further used to perform a fatigue analysis and to examine the applicability for lifetime investigations on Francis machines with different specific speeds.

Abstract:
The metal pressing process which is widely used in many industries has advantages over casting process for producing large and thick blades of Francis turbine. For the design of pressing process, blank design should be firstly performed to determine the dimension of the flat blank. In fact, the traditional trial and error approach is not applicable for the blade design for Francis turbines that is not standard because of the different hydraulic characteristics of a hydropower plant from site to site. The powerful computing technology makes it possible to desgn optimum blanks by numerical modeling and simulation. In this paper, the multi-step inverse finite element approach is investigated for blank design and an elasto-plastic model has been built by using the well-known software ANSYS. Unfolding tests with cylindrical sections have been carried out and the numerical results agree well with the analytical results. Thereafter, a large and thick blade of Francis turbine for hydropower plants has been successfully unfolded by the FE model. Finally, for ensuring the machining of the blade after the pressing process, a new contour is obtained by extending the boundary of the flat blank provided by the FE model.

Abstract:
Francis turbine is widely employed in large scale hydro-power stations in the world with main characteristics of efficiency, stability and cavitation. In practical establishment, each large power station must develop a new Francis turbine for its special natural condition and requirement, such as higher efficiency for utilization of natural resources. CFD has been developed greatly and helped a lot in hydraulic design stage of the turbine. In this paper, firstly, a new RNG k–ω turbulence model is proposed based on the RNG k–ε model, which brings the nonlinear term of the mean fluid flow transition to the ω equation in the original k–ω model. And, this RNG k–ω model has been used to predict the energy performances for Francis turbine. Then, the flow diagnosis method in the turbine runner based on vorticity parameters is presented, following the detailed flow behavior revealed. Finally, the simulation results for different model Francis turbines have been compared and analyzed for optimizing the energy performances of the turbine. The model test results indicate that the efficiency of hydraulic turbine has been improved from 93.6% to 94.5%.

Abstract:
Abstract Hydroelectric power generation accounts for 7% of the total world electric energy production. Francis turbines are often employed in large-scale hydro projects and represent 60% of the total installed base. Outputs up to 800 MW are available and efficiencies of 95% are common. Cost, performance, and design cycle time are factors that continue to drive new designs as well as retrofits. This motivates the development of more sophisticated analysis tools to better assess runner performance earlier in the design phase. The focus of this paper is to demonstrate high fidelity and time-efficient runner damping and forced response calculations based on one-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) using loosely coupled commercial finite element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes. The runner damping is evaluated based on the work done by the fluid on the runner. The calculation of the work first involves determining the runner mode shapes and natural frequencies using a cyclic symmetric FEA model with structural elements to represent the runner hardware, and acoustic fluid elements to represent the mass loading effect of the fluid. The mode shapes are then used in a transient CFD calculation to determine the damping which represents the work done by the fluid on the runner. Positive damping represents stability from flutter perspective while negative damping represents unstable operating conditions. A transient CFD calculation was performed on a runner to obtain engine order forcing function from upstream stationary vanes. This unsteady forcing function was mapped to the FEA model. Care is taken to account for the proper inter-blade phase angle on the cyclic symmetric model. The hydraulic damping from flutter calculations was also provided as input to the forced response. The forced response is then determined using this equivalent proportional damping and modal superposition of the FEA model that includes both the structural and acoustic elements. Results of the developed analysis procedure are presented based on the Tokke runner, that has been the basis of several studies through the Norwegian HydroPower Center. Unique features of the workflow and modeling approaches are discussed in detail. Benefits and challenges for both the FEA model and the CFD model are discussed. The importance of the hydraulic damping, that is traditionally ignored in previous analysis is discussed as well. No validation data is available for the forced response, so this paper is focused on the methodology for the calculations.

Abstract:
Vibration characteristics of the rotating machinery has been usually managed to facilitate the deterioration of the equipment and to prevent accident in advance. In a hydropower turbine, pressure pulsation characteristics to induce vibration is investigated during the model testing with a small scale model turbine for various operating conditions, and a prototype turbine is constructed to operate stably on the site. However, the model test has limitation that can’t be considered together with the vibration characteristics of a generator itself and of civil engineering structures for the building that support a turbine and a generator. Therefore, field tests of vibration for a hydroelectric power plant are carried out periodically, thereby maintaining reliability for safe operation of power generation facilities. In the study, the vibration of a Francis type hydroelectric power plant operated over 30 years and overhauled a year and a half ago was measured and its characteristics has been investigated. Displacement and velocity sensors were installed at appropriate positions to measure the vibration of the rotating shaft and bearing support of a turbine and a generator, and the vibration characteristics of a typical hydroelectric power plant have confirmed by analyzing the measurement results. The vibration characteristics of rotating shaft and non-rotating parts of the hydroelectric turbine have been analyzed to confirm the degree of aging of the plant. Vibration in the power plant building depending on the operating conditions was also measured to be large enough to sense, and its frequency characteristics were analyzed.

Abstract:
Generally, cavitation occurs very easily when liquid local pressure in the Francis turbine falls below the saturated vapor pressure. It will injure the hydropower plant seriously by some problems, and has become one of the main concerns in the field of hydraulic machinery. In this paper, we present steady simulation on cavitation performed through the whole passage of a prototype Francis turbine with mixture model for multiphase flow, and full cavitation model for cavitation effect, from the commercial code of FLUENT 6.1. The simulation is conducted at several operating conditions, and the internal flow conditions and the critical cavitation number were obtained for each case. The simulation results indicate that the internal flow condition in the flow parts before the runner is not affected by the cavitating flow. The tendency of the cavitating flow in the runner and draft tube agrees well with the turbine empirical results, and the critical cavitation number has been quantitatively predicted.

Abstract:
There is increasing evidence that wellbeing is unequally distributed across sociodemographicgroups in contemporary societies. However, less is known about thedivergence across social groups of trajectories of wellbeing across age groups. This issue is of great relevance in contexts characterised by changing populationstructures and growing imbalances across and within generations, and in whichensuring that everyone has the opportunity to have a happy and healthy life courseis a primary welfare goal. In this study, we investigate wellbeing trends in Franceand Switzerland across age, gender, and socioeconomic status groups. We use twohousehold surveys (the Sant´e et Itin´eraires Professionnels and the Swiss HouseholdPanel) to compare the unfolding inequalities in health and wellbeing across agegroups in two rich countries. We view wellbeing as multidimensional, followingthe literature highlighting the importance of considering different dimensions andmeasures of wellbeing. Thus, we investigate a number of outcomes, includingdifferent measures of physical and mental health, as well as of relational wellbeing, using a linear regression model and a linear probability model. Our findings showinteresting country and dimension-specific heterogeneities in the development ofhealth and wellbeing over age. While our results indicate that there are gender andeducational inequalities in both Switzerland and France, and that gender inequalitiesin mental health accumulate with age in both countries, we also find that educationalinequalities in health and wellbeing remain rather stable across age groups.

Abstract:
At national and aggregate levels, COVID-19 vaccination across G7 countries appears successful. To date, 79.4% of the total population of G7 countries have received a first dose, 72.9% a second, and 45.4% a booster shot (28th April 2022 data). In France, 80.6% of the total population has had a first dose, 78.2 % have had two doses, and 55.4% have had their booster jabs (28th of April 2022 data). In the UK, 79.3% of the total population has received one dose, 74.1% a second one, and 58.5% have received a booster. In Italy, 85.2% of the total population has had a first dose, 80.4% have had two doses, and 66.5% have had their booster jabs (28th of April 2022 data). These figures indicate enthusiasm across G7 countries for COVID-19 vaccines. Yet high overall vaccination rates at the national level, disguise significant in-country disparities. For example, by the end of 2021, less than 50% of residents of the Northern Districts of Marseille were vaccinated, compared with over 70% in wealthier neighbourhoods. In the Ealing borough of Northwest London, 70% of the eligible population has had a first dose – which is almost 10% percent below the national average (4th of April 2022 data). Disparities are also seen in other urban metropolises across the G7. This brief investigates these disparities through the lens of “vaccine (in)equity”, focusing on the role of local actors. It builds on ethnographic and qualitative research carried out in the Northern Districts of Marseille and ongoing research engagement around vaccine equity in Ealing (Northwest London), as well as qualitative research carried out in Italy among networks of healthcare providers, intercultural mediators, and civil society organizations that collaborated during the COVID-19 campaign in the Emilia Romagna region and in Rome. This brief is based on research conducted between October and December 2021 in Marseille and ongoing engagement in Ealing which started in May 2021. It identified how local governments, health actors, community groups and residents play key roles in shaping vaccine (in)equity. This brief was developed for SSHAP by Santiago Ripoll (IDS), Tabitha Hrynick (IDS), Ashley Ouvrier (LaSSA), Megan Schmidt-Sane (IDS), Federico Federici (UCL) and Elizabeth Storer (LSE). Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to determine the artistic and graphic peculiarities of the Franco-Belgian exhibition poster of the 1890s in the context of the formation of the Art Nouveau style. The research methodology of the work is based on the use of traditional art methods: historical and cultural, reconstructive and model, historical and attributive, which contributed to the revealing of artistic and graphic transformations in the field of Franco-Belgian spectacular poster. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the author’s artistic interpretation of the stylistic manner of the creators of the spectacular poster in “style floreale” as one of the leading directions of the development of the artistic style of that period. The distinctive features of this type of the artistic work are outlined on the basis of the review of the stylistic and image transformations of exhibition posters of the famous artists – J. Chéret, A. Toulouse-Lautrec, E. Grasset, A. Mucha, A. Privat-Livemont and others. Attention is focused on the identification of the presentation features of the advertised exhibition events as an important cultural events of that time. Means of artistic visualization of information are studied taking into consideration the specific nature of the poster. Conclusions. In the general cultural and historical context of that time, the poster has become a significant component of the formation of national trends in the artistic style of the day, in particular - the Franco-Belgian Art Nouveau style. The exhibition poster, reflecting the stylistic landmarks of the time, contributed to the formation of the artistic vision as a manifestation of the cultural and artistic landmarks of the studied period.

Abstract:
At present, most global GHG emissions – over 75% – are from fossil fuels. By necessity, reaching net zero emissions therefore requires dramatic reductions in fossil fuel demand and supply. Though fossil fuels have not been explicitly addressed by the UN Framework on Climate Change, a conversation has emerged about possible “supply-side” agreements on fossil fuels and climate change. For example, a number of countries, including Denmark, France, and New Zealand, have started taking measures to phase out their oil and gas production. In the United States, President Joe Biden has put a pause on new oil and gas leasing on federal lands and waters, while Vice President Kamala Harris has previously proposed a “first-ever global negotiation of the cooperative managed decline of fossil fuel production”. This paper aims to contribute to this emerging discussion. The authors present a simple analysis on where fossil fuel extraction has happened historically, and where it will continue to occur and expand if current economic trends continue without new policy interventions. By employing some simple scenario analysis, the authors also demonstrate how the phase-out of fossil fuel production is likely to be inequitable among countries, if not actively and internationally managed.

Abstract:
Despite increasing recognition of public health and rights issues associated with human trafficking globally and in the United States following the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000, there has been limited research on how to systematically strengthen service access for survivors of sex and labor trafficking. The experience of service providers may provide insight into how trafficking survivor responses and service networks function in California’s Bay Area. This study explores provider perspectives on existing service networks and collaboration dynamics, including the barriers to and enablers of long-term service provision and survivor follow-up. A participatory research design included qualitative interviews with key informants working at nongovernmental organizations, organizational website reviews, and consultation with network service providers in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. This study approach allowed for eliciting in-depth reflections of service provision, collective generation of stakeholder mapping, and consensus-driven recommendations arising from barriers and enablers to anti-trafficking service provision. This report enhances stakeholder awareness of existing organizational and policy resources and offers insights into research and programming on how anti-trafficking service response networks can be strengthened to provide survivor-centric support in the long-term.

Vallerani, Sara, Elizabeth Storer, and Costanza Torre. Key Considerations: Equitable Engagement to Promote COVID-19 Vaccine Uptake among Undocumented Urban Migrants. SSHAP, May 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/sshap.2022.013.

Abstract:
This brief sets out key considerations linked to the promotion of COVID-19 vaccine uptake among undocumented migrants residing in Rome, Italy. We focus on strategies to equitably distribute COVID-19 vaccines. Evidence from Italy is applicable to other contexts where vaccine administration is tied to “vaccine passports” or “immunity passes”. Undocumented migrants have been considered as some of the “hardest to reach” groups to engage in COVID-19 vaccination outreach. This brief uses the term undocumented migrant or migrant for brevity, but we refer to people living without formal Italian citizenship, refugee status or right to remain in Italy. This brief explores the everyday context of undocumented migrants lives, and how experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated difficult conditions. It links emerging vulnerabilities to perceptions of vaccines, and we suggest that migrants orientate themselves towards the vaccines within frameworks which prioritise economic survival. In many cases, migrants have accepted a COVID-19 vaccine to access paid employment, yet this has often generated mistrust in the state and healthcare system. Accordingly, this brief considers how vaccines can be distributed equitably to boost trust and inclusion in the post-pandemic world. This brief draws primarily on the ethnographic evidence collected through interviews and observations with undocumented migrants in Rome, along with civil society representatives and health workers between December 2021 and January 2022. This brief was developed for SSHAP by Sara Vallerani (Rome Tre University), Elizabeth Storer (LSE) and Costanza Torre (LSE). It was reviewed by Santiago Ripoll (IDS, University of Sussex), with further reviews by Paolo Ruspini (Roma Tre University) and Eloisa Franchi (Université Paris Saclay, Pavia University). The research was funded through the British Academy COVID-19 Recovery: G7 Fund (COVG7210058). Research was based at the Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa, London School of Economics. The brief is the responsibility of SSHAP.
