Abstract:
Research suggests that public figures can play an influential role in forming public opinion; yet, little research has experimentally tested the efficacy of public figures on the cognitive formation of boundaries. Using an experiment embedded within a nationally representative survey, we examine how two science popularizers, Francis Collins and Richard Dawkins, influence perceptions regarding the boundaries between religion and science. We find that learning of Dawkins does not influence people’s perceptions of the religion–science relationship, while learning of Collins shifts respondents toward a collaborative view of religion and science. Findings suggest that figures with unexpected views might be more effective in changing conceptual boundaries.

Abstract:
When I was chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I tried never to miss the annual concert of the Triangle Youth Symphony. When people asked me why I was such a regular, I complimented the music but also suggested that there were potential future college science majors on the stage. The strong correlation between scientific and musical ability is an association familiar to many scientists, but in recent years, the connections between music and the mind have begun receiving broader attention, partly because of an unexpected partnership between the former long-time director of the US National Institutes of Health Francis Collins, and soprano opera superstar Renée Fleming. I caught up with Collins and Fleming for an extended chat about their shared curiosity regarding the science of music and health.

Full text
Abstract:
As co-editors of this Theofilos Supplement issue, we are delighted that the issue contains such a wealth of valuable contributions. As theologians and apologists, we find Jack Collins’ approach promising, not the least because he draws on key insights from the two influential 20th century apologists C. S. Lewis and Francis A. Schaeffer in his exposition and application of Genesis 1-3 as a true worldview story. We have a threefold intention with this article. First, to introduce some key contributions from Schaeffer, Lewis and Collins, largely in their own words. Secondly, to indicate why we find their contributions attractive and worthy of further explorations. Thirdly, in view of these contributions, to offer some brief, final reflections on how to understand Genesis 1-3 in worldview terms and how to integrate and apply this worldview story in our apologetics.

Abstract:
Gender medicine is the topic of this issue of The Biochemist. In 2014, Francis Collins, Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Janine Clayton, Director of the Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) at NIH, announced that NIH would begin requiring all preclinical grant proposals to address sex as a biological variable1. The ORWH was set up in 1990 with the specific mandate to promote the inclusion of women and minority individuals in all clinical trials going forward2. Similar guidelines are imposed by the European Commission and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

Abstract:
Theistic evolutionism appears in several versions and each of them is evidently incomplete and, to a significant extent, internally ambivalent. Versions of theistic evolutionism arose on the ground of different understandings of God, creation, and evolution. This work deals with one of the two main versions of theistic evolutionism, namely the theistic evolutionism of scientists and thinkers, which has its most concrete appearance in Francis Collins’ BioLogos. This version sometimes appears in the form of deism (deistic evolutionism). Its dominant feature is apparent inclination to Darwin, but also to the tradition of evolutionism which preserves a positive attitude towards religion and the idea of God.

Abstract:
Abstract The proclamation, “Gentlemen! this is no humbug,” attributed to John Collins Warren, M.D., was not identified in any contemporaneous eyewitness report of William T. G. Morton’s October 16, 1846, demonstration of ether at Massachusetts General Hospital. The earliest known documentation of the proclamation is in Nathan P. Rice’s biography of Morton, first published in 1859. Only three eyewitnesses, Washington Ayer, M.D., Robert Thompson Davis, M.D., and Isaac Francis Galloupe, M.D., reported Warren’s alleged proclamation. However, their accounts first appeared in 1896, 50 yr after Morton’s demonstration of etherization. Although Warren’s alleged proclamation appears plausible, the overall impression from eyewitness statements and publications relating to the October 16, 1846, demonstration of etherization is that it may not have been made.

On 2 April, I received an email that changed the course of the next 2 weeks. The Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, chaired by United States Congressman Brad Wenstrup, invited me to testify along with my counterparts at Nature and The Lancet . The purpose of the public hearing (Academic Malpractice: Examining the Relationship Between Scientific Journals, the Government, and Peer Review) was to determine whether government officials, specifically former National Institutes of Health leaders Francis Collins and Anthony Fauci, steered journals to publish papers suppressing the idea that COVID-19 may have arisen from a lab accident in Wuhan, China. I was not subpoenaed to appear but made the decision to testify voluntarily. My counterparts, who are based in the United Kingdom, decided not to attend.
