Abstract:
(1) Methods for checking the condition of monumental masonry structures can still be considered understudied. Among the different approaches available in the literature, the graphical ones have a special role, due to their simplicity and effectiveness. (2) In this work, a 2D method (Thrust Line Analysis (TLA)), the Modified Thrust Line Method (MTLM), and the 3D Membrane Equilibrium Analysis (MEA) method are compared. All methods have the same starting concept: no tensile strength, no sliding between the stone blocks, infinite compressive strength. (3) The methods are compared in terms of stress distribution (for the same—or similar—thrust line), and in terms of the Geometrical Safety Factor ensured. (4) The work shows that these theories, if properly conveyed in a scientific methodology (as many authors are doing currently and have done in the past) demonstrate the effectiveness and the advantages of graphical methods for simple structures.

Abstract:

Abstract:
BackgroundBone mass reaches the peak during the third decade of life. By this age, men reach an increased bone mass that starts declining in their fifties, however less rapidly than women after menopause. However, men and women lose bone mass at the same rate by age 65-70, becoming fragile and more likely to have fracture.ObjectivesThis study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy in osteoporosis diagnosis of Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry (REMS) technology applied on the proximal femur in an adult male population in comparison with the Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA).MethodsA cohort of Caucasian males was enrolled in the study. Inclusion criteria were: age between 30 and 90 years, body mass index (BMI) less than 40 kg/m2, no significant walking impairments and proximal femur DXA medical prescription. All the enrolled patients underwent proximal femur scans with both DXA and REMS. The agreement between REMS and DXA-measured BMD was expressed by Pearson correlation coefficient and Bland-Altman method. The classification into patients “with osteoporosis” or “without osteoporosis” was carried out considering the conventional threshold of T-score (-2.5) for both techniques independently. The accuracy was evaluated by the assessment of sensitivity and specificity considering the DXA outcome as reference [1].ResultsA total of 219 men were included in the analysis, with mean age of 55.5 (± 15.3) years. The Pearson correlation coefficient between REMS- and DXA-measured BMD values was r=0.94. At Bland-Altman analysis, Bias ± 1.96 Standard Deviation were -0.004 ± 0.04 g/cm2. The REMS capability to discriminate osteoporotic patients from non-osteoporotic ones was very high: a sensitivity of 90.0% and specificity of 91.8% was detected.ConclusionREMS, applied to the proximal femur site, is a reliable technology for the diagnosis of osteoporosis also in men, thus confirming the diagnostic performance already observed in studies carried out in female populations [1, 2].References[1]Di Paola P et al. Abstract:
Background:During rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic autoimmune disease, the loop existing between inflammation and angiogenesis, characterised by new vessels formation associated with the increased recruitment of inflammatory cells, via the abnormal neo-angiogenesis in the synovial tissues, is considered an early important pathogenic mechanism.Tofacitinib, a potent and selective JAK inhibitor, showed a good profile of safety and efficacy in RA patients, slowing the radiographic progression of the disease. In the last years, many works confirmed that some pro-angiogenic genes are targets of STATs family, and among them, vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF), a potent pro-angiogenic molecule, may promote the new vessels formation via JAK/STAT pathways. Objectives:The aim of this work was to investigate the inhibiting role of tofacitinib, on the angiogenic mechanisms occurring during experimental model of arthritis. Methods:Healthy control (HC) ECs were stimulated with VEGF and/or tofacitinib and assessed for tube formation and migration, by matrigel and Boyden chamber assay. Furthermore, after ethical approval the experimental model of arthritis was obtained, stimulating 32 mice with collagen (CIA) and 32 mice with PBS (control). At day-19, CIA and controls mice were divided in 16 mice receiving vehicle and 16 mice receiving tofacitinib. At day-35, the mice were scarified and the thickness of paw joints, the synovial vessels and the serum levels of VEGF and Ang-2 were evaluatedResults:In vitro, after tofacitinib-treatment, HC-ECs lose their ability to form vessels and to migrate. In vivo, tofacitinib significantly prevented the increase of paw thickness induced by the collagen administration and reduced the vessel density in synovial tissues of joints, when compared to CIA that did not received tofacitinib. Furthermore, the serum levels of VEGF and Ang-2 were higher in CIA mice, than in control mice. The administration of tofacitinib was able to prevent the VEGF and Ang-2 accumulation in CIA mice. Conclusion:During the last decade, the biological analogies between solid tumors and synovial pannus, and the encouraging results of anti-angiogenic treatments in oncology, lead to increasing interest for angiogenesis as a possible therapeutic target in RA. The present study demonstrated the anti-angiogenic efficacy of tofacitinib, opening a new perspective application for this molecule and improving our therapeutic skill to control the clinical evolution of RA.References:[1]Leblond A et al. Abstract:
Paolo Paruta (1540-1598) could be considered the mouthpiece of late XVI century Venetian political thought. Careful reader of Machiavelli and Guicciardini, he tried to mix together the new ideas from Florence and the Venetian and classical tradition he belonged to. This research would like to explore the lexicon used by Paruta, in order to reach a better historical and semantic interpretation. It is composed by: a bio-bibliographical introduction; a general summary; a selectde lexicon from Paruta's political works (with occurrences); conclusions.

Abstract:
The critics have already been considerably concerned with the abundant presence of biblical references in Rimbaud’s works. However, the conflicting relation that Rimbaud had with religion often drove critics to mix up Rimbaud’s works with his life. With the support of the linguistic concept of intertextuality, we have analysed the dynamic dialogue between the Bible and Rimbaud’s poetry. Because of our strictly textual point of view, we avoided spiritual considerations and maintained a rigorous distinction between the author and the man. Through the choice of several threads, our analysis has pointed out a deep link between Rimbaud’s poetic project and the intertextual relation that his poetry has with the Bible.

Abstract:
From 1986 to 1994, Patrick Chamoiseau and Raphaël Confiant published a series of fictional and non-fictional writings focusing on language issues. Interest in these themes can certainly in part be explained by the "surconscience linguistique" that Lise Gauvin attributes to Francophone authors: a linguistic over-awareness which, in the case of these two Martiniquais writers, may be attributed to their Creole-French diglossia. Although we might believe that the idea of Gauvin is right, it doesn't seem enough to explain why the linguistic theme plays such a central role in Chamoiseau's and Confiant's works. Deeply influenced by Glissant's theories on Creole popular culture and Antillean literature (Le discours antillais), they conceived a "Créolité" poetics based on a primarly identity-based and geopolitical discourse. Declaring the need to build an authentically Creole literary discourse, one that finally expresses the Martiniquais reality, Chamoiseau and Confiant (as well as Bernabé, third and last author of Éloge de la créolité) found the «foundations of [their] being» in orality and its poetics in the Creole language. This belief was maily translated into their works in two ways: by representing the (diglossic) relationships occurring between their first languages (Creole and French) and by representing the Creole parole (orality) and its function. An analysis of our authors' literary and theoretical writings will enable us to show how two works that develop around the same themes and thesis have in fact produced very divergent results, which were perhaps already perceivable in the main ambiguities of their common manifestos.

FEDERICO, LUCA. "L'apprendistato letterario di Raffaele La Capria." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Genova, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11567/1005664.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The work addresses the belief that led to the formation, constitution, dissemination and redefinition of the correspondence traditionally attributed to Francesco di Paola. He was a Calabrian hermit of the 15th century, then become saint from the following century. At the beginning, the analysis identifies the difficulties encountered by the historiography in the 19th-20th centuries, that was struggling to overcome models and effects of the 17th century censorial judgment by the Congregation of the Index. In the second chapter, the shift from the historiography to the early-modern scholarship is then motivated by the persistence encountered in historiographical evaluations. In particular, the centrality for censors and historians of the Centuria structure, the main collection of the Saint's letters, move the gaze on the cultural operation that led to the construction of the correspondence of San Francesco di Paola. The renewed contextualization of the Centuria opens to the problems of its fortune and its genesis: the former allows us to address the repercussions on devotional and hagiographic literature, starting with the death of the Saint (1507); the latter allows us to outline the processes of reproduction, transmission and use of a documentary heritage, spread on a European scale between the 15th and the 17th centuries (chapters III to VI). The final considerations and appendix present several hypotheses for the future research. This should face the widening of the traditional reconstruction relating to the belief of Francesco di Paola epistolographer: the Postellian and Savonarolian inspiration for the prophetic component and the attempt at family ennobling for the hagiographic component. The mid-seventeenth century censorship remains not sufficiently addressed, although it represents the final moment in the structuring of the documentary complex.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Gentili considered ius gentium as customary, as well as the historical artefact of European cultural identity. He substantiated its normative foundation by securely grounding it in the consensus of the literary elites of the past. In so doing, he dismissed the achievement of political consensus of sovereigns as a necessary requirement for the legitimation of custom. Rather, custom was to be fabricated through the language of classical antiquity, and crafted on the shoulders of the impressive scholarship that humanists were producing throughout Europe. Custom, as a fundamental feature of ius gentium, became what an invented consensus of past scholars said it was. At the same time, in the attempt to reconcile natural law with ragion di stato, Alberico Gentili compared the authoritative judgments of classical scholars with more contemporary historical accounts, such as the works of the Italian historians Francesco Guicciardini and Paolo Giovio. By integrating these two languages, Gentili opened a Eurocentric window for non-European historical narratives to emerge, as shown by his comparative interest in Ottoman customs.
