Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the role of the Commissione di Armistizio con la Francia (Italian Armistice Commission with France), or CIAF, in the Italian occupation of France. The CIAF, created after the Armistice of Villa Incisa, was officially invested with the task of ensuring that the clauses of the Franco-Italian armistice were not infringed by the new French state, the Vichy regime led by Marshal Philippe Pétain. More important, its officials in France proclaimed themselves as paladins of the Italian community of the French Riviera. Their welfare campaign, far from being moved on humanitarian grounds, was promoted to impinge on French internal affairs with the avowed secret task of spearheading Italy’s future annexation of the French Riviera. This chapter examines the CIAF’s activities in the Côte d’Azur during the period 1940–1942 and the “Battle for Food” that was waged not only in occupied France but also all across Europe and even worldwide.

Abstract:
France is a member of the European Pain Federation (EFIC). The national pain society works to support the needs of patients with pain, including those with acute pain, chronic pain, cancer pain, pain in later life, and at the end of life. In this chapter of European Pain Management we describe first the geography and history of the country as it relates to the recent demographics of the population, the prevalence of pain and needs for pain management, the pain workforce and its organization, the system pain specialists work within, and specific issues that have been tackled to improve the delivery of pain care. An example of recent innovation is also described.

Abstract:
The French case serves as a reminder that the timing and magnitude of policy feedback effects are historically contingent. Compared to their German and British counterparts, French incumbents faced fewer challenges and weaker constraints prior to World War II, and a correspondingly stronger political backlash thereafter. The first set of reforms was more severely market-restraining, and gave rise to a new breed of sheltered incumbents closely connected to the state. As in other countries and time periods, and like market-enabling rules, the market-restraining French arrangements had self-reinforcing feedback effects: They effectively suppressed the rise of a pro-market clientele. As in Germany, self-undermining feedback effects countervailed. As in Britain, the first steps toward marketization gave rise to a fledgling takeover industry interested in market expansion. However, unlike in Britain, the growth of this pro-market clientele was nipped in the bud by the unfavorable economic climate of the 1970s.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses business groups within the context of the development of large enterprises in France. The latter have predominantly taken the form of holding companies (usually called groupes) akin to hierarchical-type business groups, undiversified or with related diversification, often of a pyramidal type. Another, more recent feature of French big business has been the continuous spread of the multidivisional structure since the 1960s. Diversified business groups have formed a small but not insignificant part of French big business. While only bank-centered business groups existed before the First World War, family-owned groups have been a persistent though minority component of French big business since the 1920s. State-owned business groups have never properly featured in France, nor have conglomerates in the 1960s and 1970s or private equity since the 1980s.
