Abstract:

AbstractIt is very difficult to start from scratch a new Astrophysics program in a country with very little or no researchers in the field. In 2007, we began to set-up an Astrophysics program by TWINNING the Université de Ouagadougou with the Université de Montréal in Canada, the Université de Provence in France and the University of Cape Town in South Africa. Already, courses are given at the undergraduate and Master levels and a teaching Observatory has been built. A 1m research telescope was also moved from the La Silla Observatory in Chile to Burkina Faso and the infrastructure is being built at the moment on mount Djaogari in the north-eastern part of the country. In the meantime, 6 students are doing their PhD in Astrophysics overseas (Canada, France and South Africa) and will become the core of the research group at the Université de Ouagadougou. An engineer is also doing his PhD in Astronomical Instrumentation to help with the maintenance of the equipment on the Research Telescope.

Abstract:

The present Special Issue of The Open Civil Engineering Journal collects a selection of extended, reviewed and revised papers presented at the 1st FIMM French-Italian Meeting on Masonry, held in Marseille, France, from 24 to 25 October 2013. The organizers of the meeting were Prof. F. Lebon, Université d'Aix-Marseille Laboratoire de Mécanique et d'Acoustique (FR), and Prof E. Sacco, Università di Cassino e del Lazio Meridionale (IT). The main aim was to exchange new ideas and show the state of the art of different research groups active in France and Italy, two countries at the top of the world for the research on masonry. Universities involved were: Université d'Aix-Marseille (FR), Université de Montpellier 2 (FR), Université de Limoges (FR), Politecnico di Milano (IT), Università di Roma la Sapienza (IT), Università di Ferrara (IT), Università di Cassino e del Lazio Meridionale (IT). A Scopus enquire with keyword “masonry” ordered by country shows 1609 records for Italy and 274 for France, with a percentage contribution respectively of 12.5% and 2.1% on the global scientific production, putting thus in evidence the importance of a tight interaction between French and Italian research groups. After the success of the first edition, the 2nd FIMM French-Italian Meeting on Masonry, will take place in Milan, Italy, from 30 to 31 October 2014. The special issue collects three papers. Fouchal et al. [1] present an evolution of the interface model originally presented by Rekik and Lebon, including cracks and roughness, with a comparison with experimental data on specimens subjected to shear tests. In the second paper, Tralli et al. [2] report a comprehensive state of the art on the cutting edge numerical research devoted to masonry vaults. Finally, Addessi et al. [3] review some advanced homogenization, micro- and macro-modelling strategies suitable for the analysis of masonry in the inelastic range. I wish to thank all the authors for their valuable contributions. All manuscripts underwent technical peer review. I therefore also wish to thank all the reviewers for their critical comments which undoubtedly improved the original technical value of all contributions.

Afin de mieux préparer les étudiants serbes de la Langue et littérature françaises pour une mobilité universitaire en France, nous proposons l’élaboration d’un programme de Français sur Objectif Universitaire (FOU). Cette formation dédiée à ceux souhaitant participer aux mobilités viserait à faciliter l’intégration dans une université française en développant les compétences des étudiants aux niveaux linguistique, méthodologique et socioculturel. Notre principal objectif était l’analyse des besoins dans le cadre du programme de Français sur Objectif Universitaire pour les étudiants serbophones participant aux échanges dans le but d’assurer une meilleure et plus rapide intégration dans le système des études supérieures en France. Une étude observationnelle des cours au centre de recherche Grammatica au sein de l’Université d’Artois a été effectuée, ainsi qu’une collecte des données sous la forme des documents authentiques. Nous avons mené des enquêtes auprès des professeurs de cette université qui ont partagé leurs expériences avec des étudiants serbes. Après avoir observé les situations de communication dans lesquelles se trouvent les étudiants étrangers, nous avons pu tirer des conclusions sur les besoins des étudiants serbes pendant une mobilité universitaire en France. Nous avons jugé que le programme d’études de la Langue et littérature françaises à l’Université de Niš fournit des connaissances nécessaires pour l’intégration dans une université française. The article analyzes the internationalization strategies and the quality assurance systems of France and Université de Lorraine. It has been found out that the goals, proposed in the national and institutional internationalization strategies, include strengthening policies to improve the reception of international students, young researchers and staff. It has been noted that Haut Conseil de l'évaluation de la recherche et de l'enseignement supérieur and Université de Lorraine are partners in the project «Implementation of Education Quality Assurance System via Cooperation of University-Business-Government in Higher Education Institutions» (EDUQAS Project), aiming at improving education quality assurance systems through the development of efficient internal quality standards leading to graduates’ better employability in partner countries. Haut Conseil de l'évaluation de la recherche et de l'enseignement supérieur and Commission des Titres d’Ingénieur are authorized to conduct international accreditations of study programs. Université de Lorraine Délégation à l’Aide au Pilotage et à la Qualité promotes a culture of continuous improvement and organizational development based on the tools of quality management and process control. It has been noted that participation in EDUQAS Project stimulates further development of QA systems at the national and institutional levels; wider participation of stakeholders in higher education quality enhancement and internationalization; higher education quality monitoring through stakeholders’ surveys; monitoring graduates’ career paths in partner countries. The legislative basis, internationalization strategies and quality assurance institutions at the national and institutional levels, networks of stakeholders involved in internationalization and quality assurance processes, participation in the international projects have been identified to be triggers for internationalization and quality enhancement in higher education of France.

Purpose Electronic theses and dissertation (ETD) symposium is one of the major international activities of Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD), and its objectives provide a platform for the exchange of knowledge and skills relevant to ETD students, professors and information professionals. This symposium offers an opportunity to put forward innovative plans, debate on ideas and promote closer cooperation internationally. This report is a summary of selected events held during ETD international symposium 2016 on the theme “Data and Dissertations”, with a focus on the handling of research data. Design/methodology/approach It is a concise review of selected presentations during 19th electronic theses and dissertation annual symposium in University of Lille, France. Findings ETD 2016 meeting held in Lille was attended by nearly 100 attendees from 28 countries. This report includes a summary of selected presentations on research data, open-access and embargo policies, augmented ETDs and French system for ETDs. It is useful to managers of organizations, teachers and educators, librarians, open-access protagonists and members of information provider communities. The personal interaction with the participants from different countries enriched the author’s ideas about the ETD development. Originality/value The author, who was also a speaker, provides an overview of the selected presentations on the initiatives, namely, research data development, copyright laws, augmented digital theses, plagiarism, etc. The important events such as sight-seeing tours to a national museum, informal get-together are covered which may be useful to the audience who are not able to attend but interested to know about ETD 2016.

Abstract:

Robert F. Hébert was the eighteenth president of the History of Economics Society, from 1991 to 1992. He studied at Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge from his undergraduate degree (completed in 1965) to his PhD (obtained in 1970). During his academic career he taught economics in the US at Clemson University (South Carolina, 1970 to 1974), Auburn University (Alabama, 1974 to 2000), and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (2000 to 2005); and in France at Université de Paris 1 (Sorbonne, 1995) and at the University of Caen (2004). Currently Professor Hébert is Russell Foundation Professor of Economics (Emeritus Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies) at Auburn University, and he resides in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This interview was done in writing from November 6 to December 18, 2019.

Abstract:

La coopération universitaire entre la France et le Brésil a été mise en place dans les années 1970. On suit ici celle qui s’est nouée plus particulièrement dans le domaine de la sociologie rurale et de l’environnement, au travers d’un accord initial entre un laboratoire CNRS de l’Université Paris Nanterre et une université de la Paraíba au Brésil. Au rythme d’accords successifs allant jusqu’à aujourd’hui, le réseau des coopérations s’est étendu aussi bien en France en impliquant en particulier des institutions liées à l’agronomie qu’au Brésil où des universités du Sud ont rejoint la coopération au gré des divers accords. En retraçant une collaboration remarquable par sa continuité, nous montrons comment elle a évolué vers plus de parité entre partenaires et en quoi elle fut en prise avec les courants d’idées irriguant les milieux académiques certes, mais aussi les mouvements sociaux, loin d’être à la traîne de ces derniers.

Abstract The respectable community of parasitologists aimed at the broad-spectral research of acanthocephalan parasites met at the 9th Acanthocephalan Workshop. The workshop took place in the beautiful surroundings of the High Tatras, Slovakia in the Congress Centre Academia, Stará Lesná near Tatranská Lomnica on September 9 - 13th. This special event was hosted by the Slovak Society for Parasitology, the Institute of Parasitology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Košice, Slovakia, and the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Czech Republic. It consisted of nearly three dozen lectures presented by distinguished acanthocephalan specialists who came from 13 countries and five continents. Vibrant discussions and creating new plans for future collaborations were accompanied by local mountain touring that offered the venue richly endowed with nature, deep forests and beautiful mountains. The contributions were addressed to resolve current systematic, taxonomic, biological, behavioural, ecological, and related topics. Presented results showed the most recent progressive developments comparable with all the other parasitic worm groups. The 10th Acanthocephalan Workshop will be hosted by Dr. Marie-Jeanne Perrot-Minnot, Université de Bourgogne Franche-Comté, Dijon, Bourgogne, France, in 2022.

In this article, Poonam M. Ganglani investigates how the preserved manuscripts in the Lord Chamberlain's archives of John Hart's stage version of Lady Chatterley's Lover in 1961 reflect the social and theatrical landscape of the times. The notion of the Lord Chamberlain as a custodian of morals, the dangerous power attributed to stage semiotics, and the response to sexual impropriety on stage are among the areas discussed. The Lord Chamberlain's correspondence files offer the only significant glimpse into this theatrical adaptation of Lawrence's novel, as into other unpublished plays of the time; this article also investigates the ways in which the Lord Chamberlain's archives in the British Library, London, serve as a unique and valuable tool for the post-war British theatre historiographer in research related to such unpublished plays. Poonam M. Ganglani is a postgraduate under the Mundus Masters ‘Crossways in European Humanities’ international study programme, having studied in three European universities over two years: the Université de Perpignan Via Domitia in France, the University of Sheffield in England, and the Università degli studi di Bergamo in Italy.

Écrire un compte rendu sur une reuvre ayant trait à Jules Gilliéron me fait néces sairement penser à mes études de français à l'Université de Ljubljana après la deu xième guerre mondiale. À cette époque-là, L'Atlas Linguistique de la France était déjà accessible aux étudiants. Les professeurs de français de la jeune université, née à peine en 1919, sentaient le besoin, pour les études de linguistique française, d' avoir à leur disposition cette reuvre qui, évidemment, avait déjà une renommée remar quable au-delà des frontières strictement romanes. Les autorités culturelles françaises étaient très favorables à la nouvelle université dans une petite ville méconnue OU, mieux, oubliée depuis l'époque lointaine des Provinces illyriennes. This paper explores how maps can support water quality management as part of a common project between a water management organization (Service Départementale de L’eau du Conseil Général de Haute-Loire - France) and a research laboratory (Centre de Recherche sur l’Environnement et l’Aménagement - Université de Saint-Etienne - France). Visualization tools are proposed to bring together the different stakeholders in the negotiation process for water management. Two fundamental questions are examined here: (1) how do we communicate the different water quality information to the various stakeholders to improve their awareness of the environment; and (2) how could we evaluate the effectiveness of a cartographic visualization system in the process of negotiation between different stakeholders. Alternative methods are proposed here to present and evaluate water quality information in the form of maps.

The “Société Géologique du Nord”, located in Lille, in northern France, was founded in 1870, with Jules Gosselet as the first president. It has always been closely connected to the geology department of the Faculty of Sciences of Lille, now called the “Université de Lille – Sciences et Technologies”, and keeps strong links with the Natural History Museum of Lille. Its activities and evolution were closely related to those of the coal-mining basin of the area until the last shaft was closed in 1990. Its activities are both in the fields of applied and fundamental geosciences. From its beginning, the Society has published the results of the research of its members, both in a periodical journal, the Annales, and as monographies called Mémoires. From the 1970s, the Mémoires have been progressively replaced by Publications, mostly devoted to State doctoral theses. During the transition from the 20th to the 21st century, the activities of the Society have strongly declined, due to several internal and external factors. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the SGN has tried to adapt itself to the new conditions of both the university and the regional territory. It is still a scientific society, but it is open to its social environment.

The objective of this article is to identify the main characteristics of scientific research regarding the approach economic about bitcoins. This study is based on bibliometric research and network analysis, with the use of descriptive statistics in 84 articles found on the Web of Science database. The analysis used the programs VOSviewer and Excel. The main results show that Bouri, Bouoiyour, Dyhrberg and Selmi are the authors who published most articles and that the Université de Pau (France) and the University College Dublin (Ireland) are the institutions with most publications. The journal with most publications is Plos One, which presented a 3.057 impact factor. There are only three co-authoring networks with greater expressiveness, however, there are no links between them and the others. Despite the growing number of publications on the subject, the researchs is beginning, showing a wide field of exploration.

Abstract The characterization and the precise measurements of atmospheric pollutant’s concentration are essential to improve the understanding and modeling of urban air pollution processes. The QualAir platform at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC) is an experimental research platform dedicated to urban air quality and pollution studies. As one of the major instruments, the ground-based QualAir Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) provides information on the air composition of a megacity like Paris, France. Operating in solar infrared absorption, it enables the monitoring of several important pollutants involved in tropospheric chemistry and atmospheric transport around the Ile de France region. Results on nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4), and carbon monoxide (CO) will be presented in this paper, as well as the CO measurements comparison with satellite and in situ measurements showing the capabilities and strengths of this ground-based FTS with the other instruments of the QualAir platform.

Cette contribution vise à examiner les expériences vécues par les étudiants africains et leurs enseignants au Département d’études françaises de l’Université de Szeged (Hongrie), dans une perspective de linguistique anthropologique. Originaires d’Afrique du Nord ou d’Afrique subsaharienne, ces étudiants africains s’expriment en français plus aisément que la plupart de leurs camarades hongrois, mais les variétés du français qu’ils parlent sont différentes du français standard de France métropolitaine, employé par les enseignants. Cette situation soulève le problème du contraste entre une vue monocentrique et une vue pluricentrique (cf. Muhr 2004, 2012, 2016, Pöll 2005, Queffélec 2007) des différentes variétés du français. En Hongrie, comme en France, l’enseignement du français est officiellement fondé sur une vue monocentrique : les étudiants doivent acquérir des compétences linguistiques reflétant le français standard de France, surtout dans le domaine de la grammaire et du vocabulaire, et dans une moindre mesure au niveau de la prononciation. D’un autre côté, les enseignants du Département d’études françaises de l’Université de Szeged doivent faire face à la présence d’une multitude de variétés non standard utilisées par les étudiants africains. Les investigations qui font l’objet de cette étude se fondent sur un ensemble d’interviews semi-structurées réalisées auprès des étudiants africains et de leurs enseignants. Notre objectif est d’étudier la perception des étudiants et des enseignants concernant les différences culturelles et linguistiques entre les étudiants africains et les enseignants, ainsi que les difficultés de communication et les difficultés éducatives auxquelles ils sont confrontés. Nous nous interrogeons également sur les attitudes des participants vis-àvis des variations du français en général. Les données obtenues lors des interviews permettent de constater que les enseignants tolèrent et acceptent les variétés non-standard du français au niveau phonique. Par contre, ils adoptent une attitude plutôt normative dans l’évaluation de la production écrite, dans lequel cas le standard continue à être le jalon essentiel de la compétence linguistique. Bien que cela reflète une vue fondamentalement monocentrique, avec le français standard de France métropolitaine au centre, il faut toutefois souligner que les enseignants au sein du département sont généralement devenus beaucoup plus ouverts envers les façons de parler plus ou moins éloignées du standard parisien durant ces cinq dernières années, ce qui peut indiquer un changement positif vers une attitude pluricentrique. En plus, ils ont une connaissance plus approfondie de la diversité de la langue française qu’avant. En ce qui concerne les étudiants africains, les interviews ont dévoilé deux caractéristiques principales : d’une part, les étudiants subsahariens et maghrébins affrontent des défis différents dans leurs études, ce qui peut en partie s’expliquer par des différences culturelles. D’autre part, les étudiants sondés semblent être conscients du normativisme qui domine l’enseignement du français à tous les niveaux d’éducation. Alors qu’ils reconnaissent l’importance d’avoir une connaissance solide du français standard pour se débrouiller sur les plans académique et professionnel, ils n’hésitent pas à ajouter que, dans le contexte quotidien, leur variété régionale est également importante et que le concept de « langue française » ne devrait pas être limité à une seule variété supérieure. Ces opinions renforcent les tendances reportées dans les sondages internationaux, qui, comme nous venons de voir, soulignent l’écart qui se trouve entre les régulations officielles et la réalité du quotidien

Les diurétiques thiazidiques sont indiqués en première intention dans le traitement de l’hypertension, en pratique courante en soins premiers.L’hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) fait partie des thiazidiques les plus utilisés. Une étude de cohorte danoise a permis de faire un lien, en 2018, entre ce traitement et l’apparition de cancers cutanés spinocellulaires et basocellulaires. Abstract:

Before implementing and/or adapting Computer Asisted Language Learning (CALL) materials, Vietnamese teachers of French ought to examine the design (Warschauer & Healy) of whatever resources they are going to use in the classroom. But there are certainly ways to test CALL documents with students, ahead of research results. We will suggest an avenue to introduce a CALL model drawn from programs used in a western environment (Canada, France) which could be appropriately tailored to a regional Vietnamese university, taking into account such constraints as program and facilities. We will present the outcomes of a limited experimentation with students taking French for special purposes.

Abstract:

This special issue of the International Journal of Serious Games offers very valuable extensions to the best papers of the 2020 edition of the GaLA conference. The local organization committee was composed of computer scientists of Laval (France), affiliated to Le Mans Université. From the 9th to the 10th of December 2020, 500 participants attended to a well-organized conference, through their virtual avatars, and listened to 37 presentations on Serious Games and Gamification. A special session was related to Virtual Reality, in a pedagogical and gaming context. The four extended papers, published in this journal, significantly extend their original work, and were accepted through a regular peer-review process for this special issue.

Après Marie Curie, en 1903 et 1911, Irène Joliot-Curie en 1935, Françoise Barré-Sinoussi en 2008, Esther Duflo (franco-américaine) en 2019, Emmanuelle Charpentier est la cinquième française à décrocher un Prix Nobel (le Nobel de chimie 2020) qu’elle partage avec l’américaine Jennifer Anne Doudna. C’est la première fois qu’un prix Nobel scientifique est décerné conjointement à deux femmes. Emmanuelle Charpentier (née le 11 décembre 1968 à Juvisy-sur-Orge, France), obtient un doctorat à l’Institut Pasteur, après un master à l’université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC, maintenant Sorbonne Université, Paris). Microbiologiste, généticienne et biochimiste, elle poursuit un cursus international au sein d’institutions américaines avant un retour en Europe (Suède et Allemagne). Elle est aujourd’hui professeure à l’Institut Max Planck de Science des Pathogènes à Berlin qu’elle a créé et qu’elle dirige. Jennifer Anne Doudna (née le 19 février 1964 à Washington) est une professeure américaine de biochimie et de biologie moléculaire à l’université de Californie à Berkeley. Elle est titulaire d’une licence en chimie obtenue au Pomona College en 1985. Sa thèse de doctorat en biochimie, centrée sur l’étude des ribozymes, a été menée à l’université Harvard. Par la suite, elle a effectué un postdoctorat à l’université du Colorado à Boulder.
