Full textThis thesis deals with the history of Lebanon’s Jewish community, in particular from the end of the French mandate period in 1943 and the creation of State of Israel in 1948 to its disintegration and dispersion in the aftermath of the 1967 Six-Day War. I will demonstrate the crucial place the Alliance Israélite Universelle (AIU), the community’s main educational institution, occupies in the identity formation of its former members to this day. Based on our archival work and interviews conducted in today’s Lebanese-Jewish diaspora world-wide, I argue that the AIU in Lebanon was not only a primary agent of socialization but more importantly an institution that reinforced the notion of belonging to a distinct and primordial ethnic community. I explore the subjective awareness of ethnic belonging which is profoundly contingent and relational rather than intrinsic and essential. This is illustrated by the migratory experience of the former members of this community, an experience which led to a reevaluation of their self-conception and the relying of identity strategies in order to keep, change, transform or reject their previously established identities

Full textThe thesis aims at studying the vocation for the missions ad gentes, starting from a group of French religious men belonging to different orders, especially the Jesuits, the Dominicans and the priests of MEP (Missions Etrangères de Paris). A first part deals with the genesis of such a vocation: the part played by the laymen appears essential, then taken in turn by the religious orders who widely encouraged their members to rediscover an “apostolic spirit”. In a second part, through the study of Jesuit indipetae (letters of requirement for India) we look into the specific subject of the “vocation” trying in particular to study its consequences, the ways in which it is discerned and the motivations which moved the candidates to ask for that mission. Finally, in a third part, we consider the politics applied by the religious orders so as to administer those vocations and choose the future missionaries

Full textThis research aims at making clear the religious life of corsica during the 2 nd. Half of the nineteenth century, through the parish missions of a very efficient religious order called : "fathers of st. Francois". In order to rouse the torpor and the incapacity of the local ways of evangelizing luring this period, the mission became a preferred means. A series of sermons and services held by the franciscan fathers in every part of corsica, will allow to have christian life revived in every parish. After a sthort historical account about political and religious events, thanbis to a series of pictures and parts of sermons, we will be able to consider the tremendous worts done by those preachers, we will also have both a better know ledge of the uses and ways of living of the islanders, and a better approach, as well as religiouses sociological

Full textDuring the last quarter of the 19th century in an atmosphere of intense rivalry between the great Western museums that were competing for the acquisition of Persian antiquities, France overtook its competitors. It signed archaeological conventions with the Persian government that granted it: the authorisation to undertake excavations in Susa (1884), the exclusive privilege to undertake excavations in the whole of Persia (1895) and, finally, the perpetual monopoly comprising the ownership of discoveries made in Susa (1900). French archaeological activities in Persia thus started in 1884 and went on for almost a century despite the abolition of the monopoly in 1927. This dissertation analyzes the history of French archaeological missions in Persia in parallel with the art market and various archaeological organisations there during the period 1884-1914. While presenting the discoveries of the missions headed by Dieulafoy, de Morgan, de Mecquenem, Fossey, etc. , this study examines the consequences of French archaeological interests on excavations practised by Iranians as well as on the Persian government's administrative and legislative efforts to protect national antiquities. The analysis of these archaeological conventions shows how the two parties respected them. Questions are raised about the extent to which the Court of Persia was aware of the importance of its antiquities and about the motives behind the granting of such vast archaeological privileges. The impact of the Constitutional Revolution of 1906 on the French archaeological monopoly as well as on the market of Persian art and antiquities is also studied. The reactions of Russia and Great Britain to the granting of archaeological privileges to France by Persia, which was part of their zone of influence, also come under question

Full textMixed capital town-planning companies are one of the tools for land management in france. The societe d'equipement du bassin lorrain (sebl), incorporated in 1956, was among the first such companies established in the country. This study deals mainly with the part taken by this company in land management in lorraine, the implementation of regulatory and operational town-planning rules, its general interest mandate and the causes of its recent decline as well as its effort for imporvement. This study purports that sebl is a local public entreprise and its private law form actually conceals a company associating local authorities, as schown by the content of its mandate and by the legal framework for its operation. This type of company can therefore be considered as a typical challenge to the administrative law that tends to give up categorizing activities and to admit some permeability of public and private laws

Full textWithin the framework of globalization, the evolution of the statutory auditor is in the way towards certain unification of the French law and that of francophone countries of UMA (Maghreb Arab Countries). This unification aims equally at the missions as well as the statutory auditors obligations. The research of a credible accounting and financial information lead the legislators to introduce mechanisms of legal control. Practicing this occupation contain numerous risks of different natures. The statutory auditors may have your responsibilities duty-bound in case they do not respect the rules whether they are set forth or dictated by the professionals. The responsibility of the statutory auditors could be civil, penal or disciplinary. The consideration of the statutory auditors responsibility in relation to violating the rules or not respecting the laws, regulations or professional norms bring about many sanctions which differs according to the type of responsibility. The evolution of the statutory auditors allowed installing a very important and discouraging juridical arsenal not only in France but also in the francophone countries of UMA which are, in spite of a light delay, really inspired by the French model who is inspired by the international tendencies in the subject. This tendency to make the juridical rules uniform aims on the long range to favour a legal and economic security allowing the development the foreign investments between partners countries

Full textBetween 1842 and 1914, the French ministère de l'instruction publique disposes of a financial resource that allows numbers of savants to make scientific, or literary travels abroad. The study of the 1205 files containing details about these travels makes the scientific and political goals of these missions scientifiques et litteraires clear. A closer approach of a few selected travels shows how financial help is asked and given. An historical sociology of those who benefit from the states money shows that this population changes greatly over the years. From a larger point of view, we can see, on one hand, that scientific travelling occupy a low grade on the hierarchical, and ideological, ladder of scientific activities. On the other hand, the study of the administrative surroundings of the missions scientifiques, sh ows that the traditionnal regal distribution of money, which has been carried on for decades by the kings of france, doe s not completely disappear during the 19th century, even under republican law. Both these elements explain the great div ersity of the scientific goals of the travels, and the heterogeneity of the population of the charges de mission. The monographical approach of the use made of state money gives an original point of view on the relations, so specific to France, between state and scientists. A dictionnary of the 796 charges de mission containing details about their live s and travels, constitutes the second volume of the work

Full textDuring the last two decades of the XXth century art commands for photographs of the land are coming up in increasing numbers in Europe. They are issued from the meeting of two historical questions, that of territories aiming at assertive representation and that of a medium, photography, seeking fullacknowledgement. This is why this research is organized along two main lines. One bears upon the political impact of an aesthetic trend, the other upon the influence of an aesthetic development upon politics and policies in the making. The phenomenon was first manifest in France, with the DATAR photographic mission, perceived as a paradigmatic model. The analysis of the missions which developed over the territory of former Eastern Germany allows for an historical counterpoint and introduces a viewpoint free from hexagonal limits. This brings to light the fact that the photographic mission issue, so firmly outlined in the French context, is likewise approached in different European countries as the key relationship between questions pertaining to land, and to photography. After-war economical and social change, the development of cities and infrastructures, together with the de-industrialization effects have deeply modified those European territories whose identity was ill-defined. Photography has then been called upon by institutions to fashion up a new representation of the European territory, in the full meaning of the phrase. In the process, the medium has acquired official recognition and so entered the scene of contemporary art

Full textThis study deals with the apostolate of the Recollet brothers in French then English America in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The diversity of their fields of action as well as the change of priority they granted to each one in turn, makes for the most part the originality of their work. Through the apostolate, Franciscan identity is at stake; how do the brothers experiment their being Recollet in New France and cope with their new way of life ? The reform of the Recollet rule within the larger and stricter Franciscan Discipline, and its evolution in the colonial context, raise questions. The purpose of this study is thus to show the double movement at work in the history of the Recollets in New France: in what measure the identity of these reformed Franciscans allows us to understand their missionary work overseas – missionary work being taken in a large sense – and how, in the specific context of the colony, their mission in their various forms can in return influence the identity of the brothers ? This double movement – changing the world and being changed by the world – is at the roots of the Franciscan order. The history of the Recollets in New France clearly shows that dialectic. Though the brothers still wobble between the opening to the world and the reclusion into monastery life in the seventeenth century, a century later they are so opened to the world that a number of them have left the convent for the parish
