Full textThis dissertation proposes to study six epistemic discourse markers (DMs) of spoken French and Italian, specialized in the dialogic operation that allows for accepting the truth-value of a propositional content proposed by an interlocutor and for grounding the propositional content in the common ground of the speakers. The originality of our research lays in our non aprioristic approach to the epistemic DMs of dialogue.Starting from a solid definition of the notions of DM, epistemicity and intersubjective negotiation, we collected a representative corpus of d’accord, mh, voilà in spoken French dialogues and ho capito, mh, esatto in spoken Italian dialogues. The corpus is composed of 60 epistemic occurrences per form, and takes into account several different speakers and contexts. The manual annotation process of the corpus revealed that the six DMs have a large and complex spectrum of functions, belonging to different levels of discourse structure.Accordingly, in the framework of a modular and corpus-driven approach, we tried to combine theoretical aspects, operationalization of theoretical choices in an annotation scheme, and analysis of the data.A comparison between the DMs of French and Italian, supported by statistical significance tests, finally showed the remarkable similarity, at the local and global levels of dialogue, between d’accord and ho capito, mh and mh, voilà and esatto

Full textRecent models of French intonation (Philippe Martin) revealed the existence of a macro-syntax of speech (Blanche-Benveniste). The application of these models to rhetoric form called "apostrophe" provides many insights into the workings of this form. In particular, it helps to explain the distinction between referential apostrophe (the type of call) and predicative apostrophe (the type of insult). From these results, the study of the spoken language provides a compendium of observations and tools for historical linguistic research

Full textThe regionalisms specific to the variety of french spoken in the area in and around gap constitute the basis of the central argument of this doctoral dissertation. A phonetic, morphological and syntactic study presents the relation existing between the meaning, form and origin of, on the one hand, different regional terms, and on the other, those of standard french, providing elements useful in the fields of spelling and classification. It also studies the links exist between this other type of frnch and the dialectical substratum it draws its origins from. This analysis is accompanied by research dealing with the use and spread of regionalisms and the linguistic awareness of its speakers. A firts study basez on a corpus of 373 terms whose presence in literary works bear witness to their being used in cap during the early 20th century allows us, firstly, to assess the use made of them today according to different criteria : urban rural setting. Integration into phonetic systems or into a french lexical family, and secondly, to gather data from informers relations to the concept of regionalisms. The objective of a second study conducted along the drac valley concerns the geographic extension of these regionalisls within the transitory bounds of two linguistic fields : occitanian and francoprovencal, explaining them with reference to the substrata, bringing to light regionalisms related to vaster areas, terms more assuredly from gap, with their equivalents in corps, cordeac, mens and la mure. The overall object to this study extends beyond the specificity of gap itself to express a certain number of hypotheses relative to

Full textOur research concerns eh bien, alors, enfin and disons, which are four characteristic marks of the process of construction of the discursive coherence in french speaking. This work involves: an attempt to identify the marks' status in conversation, as well as their common and different points; a description and a comparative study of the contexts of use of the marks eh bien and alors, where the goal is to show their discursive role; a study of the discursive role of enfin and of disons or disons que especially owing to our political argumentative corpus, we determine precisely that eh bien and alors have an argumentative roel. Also, we note that this marks are indicators of the construction of the discursive coherence. Concerning enfin and disons, they are situated at another level, that of the setting of the words, and the placing of the formulation of the token. Consequently, eh bien and alors operate upon the coherence of the discourse, meanwhile enfin and disons operate upon the coherence of the token

Full textModality is a linguistic phenomenon that cannot be defined in purely semantic terms. A complete definition of modality has to take into account all of its semantic, functional, and structural properties. In the present work, we first build up a theoretic framework based on an onomasiological approach, and then analyze the different ways modal meanings can be expressed in French from a semasiological point of view. This analysis includes the elements most prototypical for the category of modality, such as modal verbs, modal adverbs and mood. Furthermore, it also takes into account less prototypical modal elements, such as modal particles, verbs and connectors implying the factual or assertive status of the proposition they introduce, as well as the relation between information structure and modality. The analysis is based upon the corpora Frantext, WebCorp, Wortschatz Leipzig and the text collection French Web 2012 in Sketch Engine. Certain properties of modal elements in French can only be detected when they interact with other elements modalizing the same proposition. The study of these complex manifestations of modality completes this portrait of the functional-semantic category of modality in contemporary French

Full textThe initial hypothesis stems from the linguistic and sociolinguistic representations of spoken language among researchers and popularizers which run contrary to the communicative approach in language teaching. In order to counteract this detrimental situation for a reasoned pedagogy of oral discourse, the first part of the thesis presents a linguistic description of "parce que" based on the analysis of 450 examples drawn from recordings of real instances of interaction. The description is based on an extension of Sperber and Wilson' notion of relevance to text level. The description shows the need to integrate the instructional and semantic values of the connecter in order to develop a coherent connection between grammatical syntax and discursive organisation. The second part of the thesis compares the linguistic analysis with the way oral discourse is processed in manuals and grammar books. This brings to light contradictions between the representation of oral discourse and the representation of grammar, specifically with reference to the connecter under consideration. It then presents contents which are liable to question these representations, particularly in relation to the specificity of oral discourse and the norms that govern it
