Pennefather, Sean Niel. "FRAME: frame routing and manipulation engine." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/3608.

Full text
Abstract:
This research reports on the design and implementation of FRAME: an embedded hardware network processing platform designed to perform network frame manipulation and monitoring. This is possible at line speeds compliant with the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard. The system provides frame manipulation functionality to aid in the development and implementation of network testing environments. Platform cost and ease of use are both considered during design resulting in fabrication of hardware and the development of Link, a Domain Specific Language used to create custom applications that are compatible with the platform. Functionality of the resulting platform is shown through conformance testing of designed modules and application examples. Throughput testing showed that the peak throughput achievable by the platform is limited to 86.4 Mbit/s, comparable to commodity 100 Mbit hardware and the total cost of the prototype platform ranged between $220 and $254.

Abstract:
From Structure to Urban Frames In the context of this thesis, the notion of frame is recognized as enclosing borders, or the outline of views, rather than as a load-bearing structural element. This thesis investigates how frames can build urban connections and, at the same time, structure sequences of movement and define a path with a variety of spatial experiences.

Jeannin, Baptiste. "Transformation of a metallic frame into a composite frame." Thesis, KTH, Lättkonstruktioner, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-243868.

Full text
Abstract:
This document is a report of my thesis which deals with the transformation of a metallic frame into a composite frame. A composite frame would require less assembly time since it is composed of less components. The maintenance plan, required for metallic structures, would not be required anymore. Finally, the weight of the structure could be reduced. The resolution of this problematic is done in the following way. Once the pre-design of the frame settled, the finite element model is modified accordingly. The finite element outputs give the load per finite element and enable a sizing of the whole structure per section and per element. The design of the frame is then modified according to the results, the finite element model modified again and the sizing conducted another time until the design is in accordance with the design and sizing requirements. The results of this whole procedure give a structure that can withstand the critical loads but an increase in the weight by 1,65kg. When analyzing the results, the design of the frame, taken from a metallic frame and thus higher than a usual composite frame, appears to be unappropriated. Furthermore, the sizing of the skin for buckling failure is already at its limit. A modification in the shape of the frame, and especially the height, would be the most efficient way to adapt the design.Though possible, this modification would require a laborious and important change of the finite element model, which is not the aim of the thesis but could constitute another interesting topic to work on.

Larsen, Shay. "Frame by Frame: Flash Nonfiction in the Comic Form." DigitalCommons@USU, 2017. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/5910.

Full text
Abstract:
Six flash nonfiction comic essays composed in direct conversation with the combination of the flash nonfiction form and the comic form make up the body of this creative thesis. In addition to this creative work, a comparison of several essential craft aspects of flash nonfiction and comic composition are discussed, and an argument is made for the benefit of melding the two forms. This hybrid genre of flash nonfiction comics benefits from aspects of both forms craft, including: heightened potency of images and themes, a dependence on association, and narrative structures based on expanding larger ideas from “miniatures.” The comic form’s difficulties in dealing with nonfiction approaches to authorial presence and figurative language is also discussed. Ultimately, the melding of the flash nonfiction form and the comic form creates valuable opportunities for both genres and their writers—as the six flash nonfiction comic essays, which make up the body of this creative thesis, illustrate.

Merritt, Deborah Anne. "Body frame measures and perceptions of frame size and weight." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/45772.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this research was to examine five methods of determining frame size. In addition, self perception of frame size and of desired weight was compared to two height-weight table recommendations. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated to determine relationships between measurements used as criteria for frame measures and between the five frame measures studied. Agreement of frame size identification was examined by comparing percentages of small, medium and large frame for each method. While the Pearson correlation coefficient of wrist circumference with elbow breadth was greater than 0.5 for both men and women, the correlations between frame measures using wrist circumference criteria and frame measures using elbow breadth criteria were less than 0.5. Self-perceived frame size was not significantly correlated with any of the five frame measures examined or with weight perception variables. Comparison of weight perception with evaluation of measured weight using two height-weight tables indicated men appear to desire to be heavier and women appear to desire to be thinner than weights recommended for height and measured frame size. Results were discussed in relation to findings of other researchers. Recommendations were made concerning the frame measures examined, the relationship of frame size perception to self-evaluation of weight, and the use of height-weight tables in determining weight goals.

Gu, Xun. "HDMI frame grabber." Thesis, California State University, Long Beach, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1526915.

Full text
Abstract:

The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is widely adopted by the modern media devices, and supporting HDMI source is required in many streaming and broadcasting solutions. This paper introduces an HDMI frame grabber design which will capture the image from an HDMI source, and then display the image on both a local HDMI display and a remote computer screen. As a result, the captured frame will be shared in the different locations across the network. The project design involves the embedded hardware/software development on a Xilinx FPGA board, and GUI/Network programming on the Microsoft .NET framework. The paper describes the embedded design to enable the HDMI and Ethernet peripherals on the FPGA board, analyzes the data format and protocol difference among the network nodes, and then introduces the method to convert and transport the data.

Popovic, Olga. "Reciprocal frame structures." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 1996. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11494/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempts an investigation of the Reciprocal Frame (RF) structure from the architectural point of view. The Introduction (Chapter 1) sets out the research subject and introduces the reader to the RF structure. Chapter 2 investigates the origin of the structure and offers a survey of similar types of systems used throughout human history. Also, a review of 'kinetic' forms of architecture is presented. Chapter 3 investigates Japanese RF construction and the possible reasons for the emergence of the system in Japan as early as the 12th century. Chapter 4 examines the potential of the system for modular construction of both temporary and permanent RF buildings, with a review of RF modular buildings constructed in the UK. Chapter 5 explores different RF morphologies on a student project case study, as well as their design experiences and opinions when using the RF system. More practical issues regarding the RF are presented in Chapter 6 which investigates the parameters which define the 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional geometry of the system and their variation, methods for simplifying the CAD presentation of the structure, alternative covering systems, and the possibility of using the RF as a retractable roof. Chapter 7 offers conclusions and aspects of future research on the system. The Appendices at the end include: two types of questionnaires and the complete transcribed interviews used to examine the students' design experiences and opinions, a routine in AutoLISP written by the author which simplifies the CAD presentation of the RF, and copies of the five Conference papers published using the findings of this research project.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the construction and architectural qualities of historic bank barns found in Chester county Pennsylvania. Analyzing the timber joints and adapting their characteristics for modern programmatic needs. It aims to extend the role of the heavy timber frame and reintroduce the methods of construction found in these historic handcrafted structures. Using the programmatic lens of a public library to isolate the distinct qualities of a barn including heavy and light, cellular and open, and the bent. The site of this Library is Kennett Square Pennsylvania, a rapidly expanding town in Chester county. While the town has made efforts to preserve the historic structures that surround it, the new construction has turned its back to these historic methods. Located in the center of downtown, this proposal would replace the existing inadequate public library. The program of a library offers the opportunity to educate the public and revitalize interest in timber structures.
Master of Architecture
This project analyzes the design of Pennsylvania bank barns and applies those architectural themes and details to the program of a Library. The bank barn is a significant agricultural structure that is uniquely linked to Pennsylvania's architectural history. Many of the building techniques and details of these barns haven't been utilized since advances in building technologies made them obsolete. Although, the structures that have been preserved continue to peak the interest of the public and the qualities continue to be emulated in residential projects. This thesis brings together the design of a bank barn and the program of a library located in Kennett Square Pennsylvania. The project experiments with extracting layouts and details from one type of structure and applying them to a completely different type of building. Experimenting with the qualities found in different building typologies could offer an opportunity to reinvent structures whose designs have remained stagnant.

Abstract:
Despite the wealth of interest in South Mexico’s Ejercito Zapatista Liberacion Nacional (EZLN), few studies have attempted to deconstruct the discourse of the Zapatistas according to its component parts. Most scholars have so far addressed the Zapatistas from the standpoint of political theory, international relations or anthropology, and in so doing have tended to engage primarily with broader polemical agendas. Furthermore, in their determination to typologise the Zapatistas as ‘this’ or ‘that’ sort of movement, scholars have overlooked the nuances and shades of meaning that exist within the Zapatista discourse, as well as the evolution of those meanings over time. As a result, the content and ongoing construction of the Zapatistas’ message has been eclipsed by a more encompassing, contested, and ultimately chimeric quest to reify the movement’s ‘essence’ or ‘truth’. This thesis represents an empirical analysis of the EZLN’s collective discourse that focuses on the content and constructed nature of their collective action frames. Combining three strands of social movement frame analysis, it avers to draw-out the ever-changing detail of the EZLN’s discursive output and so add value to the debates that surround the Zapatistas. It also makes several theoretical contributions to social movement frame analysis.

Abstract:
Introduction: The psychotherapeutic frames, and breaking these frames, is of central significance to psychodynamic therapists. The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychotherapist's concepts of frames, and experiences of personal frame breaks. Problem statement: The questions explored were which the frame and its meaning were, and how the psychotherapists experienced their own frame breaks. Methods: In the study, a qualitative method was used, and five psychodynamic therapists were interviewed. The material was analyzed by thematic analysis. Results: The results showed, that the concepts of frame were differing. The differences were derived partly from different theories of psychotherapy, partly from personal standpoints. Moreover, somewhat differing frames were used for different patients. The psychotherapists' experiences of their own frame breaks also showed differences, such as anxiety, shame, feelings of failure and satisfaction. Discussion: Frames and departures from them take a complex role in the therapists work. Frames are formed by the therapists themselves with their psychotherapeutic orientation as a cornerstone. Breaks to the frames can take place in a planned or unplanned way, cause compounded reactions of feelings and can bring better or worse result for the patient.

McKay, James Hadden. "The cosmological rest frame." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Department of Physics and Astronomy, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/10424.

Abstract:
The analysis of the uniformity of a spherically averaged Hubble expansion in the Local Group frame of reference by Wiltshire, Smale, Mattsson and Watkins (2013) is extended. We carry out an investigation to constrain the frame of reference from which the spherically averaged Hubble expansion is the most uniform by applying arbitrary Lorentz boosts to the data. The proposition of a systematic boost offset between the Hubble expansion in the Local Group and CMB reference frames is verified within statistical uncertainties. This evidence further supports the claim that the Local Group is closer to the frame of reference in which Hubble expansion should be considered. We subsequently carry out a statistical analysis in search of a frame of minimum expansion variation and find consistent results with the systematic boost offset analysis. However, there is a considerable degeneracy to perform boosts in the plane of the galaxy, which may be a consequence of a lack of constraints from the Zone of Avoidance where data is absent. The COMPOSITE sample of 4,534 galaxies is used primarily, with the key results repeated with the recently released Cosmicflows-2 sample of 8,162 galaxies. The treatment of Malmquist distance bias is investigated in the context of the Cosmicflows-2 and COMPOSITE samples. We find systematic differences in the inclusion of the large SFI++ subsample into these catalogues. These differences are explored and the origin of Malmquist distance bias reviewed. We find the Cosmicflows-2 data produces results which naively suggest more variation of cosmic expansion than would be expected in any cosmological model when the methods of Wiltshire et al. are applied. We trace this discrepancy to the fact that the distribution Malmquist biases have not been corrected for in the Cosmicflows-2 survey.

This thesis describes an object detection system that extracts and combines appearance information over multiple consecutive video frames, inherently gaining and analyzing information related to motion. Objects that exhibit characteristic motion over the course of multiple frames are able to be detected at smaller scales than achievable by a single-frame detector. Our method builds on the detection work of Viola and Jones, with our extension being the added ability to combine information from multiple frames. Our implementation detects an object in synthetic images at very small scales, down to 33 pixels, and has a low false-alarm rate

The study starts on the encounter, in contemporary art, between analog and digital media made possible by the use of technological means. It deals, more specifically, with the materiality and immateriality of painting and video languages, been based on artists of the contemporary scene s productions, Romanita Disconzi and my own poetic work. The poetic investigation is about the frames transposition, moments, minimum divisible part of scenes of human bodies in motion, from the movie Cidade de Deus, for the painting. The images, transposed into the contemporary painting by the technique of painting on canvas and acrylic alternative surfaces, materialize frames of movie scenes and reveal the look changed through the electronic means. The study also discusses the material record of the tiny fraction of the video, digital imaging and painting - frame, pixel and brush stroke - as the smallest piece that still allows the identification of the differentiated processes of observation. In this sense, the final result of the pictorial body, pervaded by the hybridization notion, as used by Couchot, leads us to the blind spot of the video - where the video sees nothing - and to the subjective field of the temporality of movie scenes

Abstract:
This thesis project is an investigation of both heavy timber construction and a means to create a retreat away from the chaos of modern life. This culminated in a porch outside of downtown Austin, Texas. The program began with an entrance foyer, kitchen, wine cellar, a humidor, a library, a bar, a locker room, restrooms, and storage. The form became a long, gradually curving hallway responding to the shape of the island. Rooms expand off of the hallway at both the beginning and the end. A heavy timber truss was designed so that it could be adapted to accommodate expansion for rooms, site constraints, and programmatic needs. Special attention was paid to the details of the retreat such as the connections needed to assemble the heavy timber truss and the handrails. The project conveys a strong connection with the site it is situated on.

This work is associated to the research project to implement Brazil FrameNet Project (SALOMÃO, 2008) and it aims at the lexical description of eight Lexical Units (LU) which evoke the CUT scene: aparar v., aparado adj., cortar v., fatiar v., ralar v., ralado v., recortar v., serrar v .The research was done based on corpus evidences taken from sixteen corpora inserted into the LINGUATECA project. This work also has the purpose to record the combinatory syntactic and semantic properties (the socalled valences) of these LU. Taking for granted the theoretical references from the Frames Semantics and inserted within the sociocognitive agenda, the research is developed from the schemes of Frame Net American project. Following the frame description and the definition of the Frame Elements (FE), the sentence annotation is operated from the postulation of its three main layers: the Frame Element, the Grammatical Function and the Syntagma Type. Abstract:
Wireless networks are common in large organisations that can cover multiple floors and buildings. Wireless networks become expensive as they grow and more control and coordination is needed to operate and management them. This thesis describes how CloudMAC, a software defined networking solution (SDN), were implemented in OpenDaylight Hydrogen, a SDN controller. CloudMAC reduces complexity in large wireless local area networks. CloudMAC splits access points (AP) into, a physical (accesses the wireless medium) and a logical (handles the processing of data) part. These two part are then placed in different locations in a wired network. The parts are connected by making tunnels through the network. Some of the communications in wireless networks are time sensitive. Such time sensitive communication is easily disturbed during congestion. To improve CloudMAC, quality of service (QoS) was implemented. QoS was used both in the wired network and in accessing the wireless medium. Evaluations shows how to evaluate queues utilization and performance.

Abstract:
This thesis is a critical analysis and reconfiguration of the physical frame in contemporary art. Drawing on historical, theoretical and technical knowledge bases, the thesis characterises the physical frame as the material manifestation of an act (or set of acts) of framing: a constructed ??surplus?? or necessary appendage created to mediate and protect an artwork, connecting it to physical and conceptual contexts in order to facilitate a better understanding of the framed work. The frame is thus depicted as ??work-sensitive??, being formed in response to, and as a direct result of, the work of art. This distinguishes the frame from notions of ??site?? and ??place??, which both connote pre- existing spaces. The physical frame, rather than describing the setting or site to which an artwork is added or contributes to, describes the material build-up which is added to the work. The thesis documents and examines the various ways that contemporary artists employ physical frames to negotiate physical and conceptual space for artworks. This framing perspective is contrary to the prevalent mindset that contemporary artworks - having broken out beyond the picture frame into real space and time - are now frameless. As a result of this research, the physical frame is reconfigured as an open-ended cellular construct, offering up multiple narrative threads. A distinction is made in the thesis between an ??immediate?? frame (a frame immediately attached to an artwork which the viewer stands on the ??outside?? of, such as a picture frame) and an ??extended?? frame (an immersive kind of frame experienced by the viewer from ??within?? the frame, as with a ??circumtextual?? frame). In addition to clarifying and developing upon existing framing terminology, this thesis presents a new taxonomic scale of frames in order to test the hypothesis that ??immediate?? frames can be discussed and categorised according to their level of involvement with their associated artworks. This framing model offers a new filter through which to approach the contemporary artwork, and provides a method, vocabulary and set of questions to dissect and articulate the presence and relevance of a detected frame.

This work is associated to the research project to implement Brazil FrameNet Project (SALOMÃO, 2009a) and it aims at the lexical description of seven Lexical Units (LU) which evoke the opening scene in the Closure frame: desabotoar, desarrolhar, desatarraxar, destampar, and three multiword expressions: abrir_((tampa)), levantar_((tampa)), and tirar_((tampa)). Once observed that the interframe Using Relation links the Closure and the Body_movement frames in their Brazilian Portuguese counterparts, there is the lexical description of three LU which evoke scenes of opening in the Body_movement frame: abrir_((boca)), abrir_((mão)) and abrir_((olho)). The research was done based on corpus evidences taken from five electronic corpora. This work also has the purpose to record the combinatory syntactic and semantic properties (the so-called valences) of these LU. Taking for granted the theoretical references from the Frames Semantics and inserted within the sociocognitive agenda, the research is developed from the schemes of FrameNet American Project. Following the frame description and the definition of the Frame Elements (FE), the sentence annotation is operated from the postulation of its three main layers: the Frame Element, the Grammatical Function and the Phrase Type. It is expected that the analyses developed in this work may contribute to the construction of Brazilian Portuguese counterpart to FrameNet semantic net.

Abstract:
In this thesis, we considered the problem of frame synchronization and channel estimation in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems. Since framing error may cause severe ISI and may disturb the orthogonality of the subcarriers, frame synchronization must be accomplished at the OFDM receiver. Furthermore, the effects of channel must be compensated to obtain the symbols accurately. We investigated several frame synchronization algorithms including a maximum likelihood (ML) synchronizer which relies on the periodicity induced in the OFDM structure, and a robust synchronizer which uses a special training symbol. These algorithms are evaluated in AWGN and Rayleigh fading multipath channels and performances are compared in terms of percentage of ISI-free synchronization, mean squared error and symbol error rate. The IEEE 802.11a framework is used to compare these algorithms with the standard system which utilizes training symbols dedicated for synchronization. It is shown that an adjustment for the frame start estimates must be done to avoid the effects of the channel delay spread. It is also pointed that ideal synchronization is not necessary unless symbol boundaries are detected inside an ISI-free region and the error aroused in ISI-free synchronization can be compensated by applying channel estimation and equalization regarding the same symbol boundaries.

The city is no more, only an endless urban corridor remains. As our cities have grown outwards over the past 100 years civic identity has been destroyed and the public realm has been lost. Inexpensive land values, the widespread adoption of the internal combustion automobile, government subsidies and propaganda have resulted in a homogenized and privatized city with no identifiable center or clearly defined boundaries. How might one establish identifiable civic landmarks in these conditions? How could a novel technology, such as the electric vehicle be employed to bring about an alternative urban reality? To address these questions this project interrogates the typological concepts of the Urban Core and the Megaform. Through historical and typological research this thesis establishes a lineage of both of these concepts and then speculates about the ability of these models to influence the city. This thesis proposes 2 novel models an Urban Core type and a Megaformal Urban Wall Building type. The Urban Wall Building typology creates an interiorized urban realm where a linear public promenade facilitates a new urban landscape that is best described by its radicalized sectional experience. This type is a piece of the larger urban core typology that strategically clips out a piece the urban fabric to define a space of opposition, civitas and ultimately, Metropolitan Urbanity. Through the design of enclosure types, overpass infrastructures and a novel public terrain, this project questions the potentialities for an architecture and urbanism of the electric vehicle.
(cont.) In the following pages you will find a proposal that addresses the chaos of the city through the projection of the Megaform into today's cityscape. Through the development of the Megaform as a recognizable entity this thesis speculates about the future of the city and the potential of Architecture to redefine it.

Abstract:
This is a Masters Thesis report of a project carried out at Scania AB in Södertälje. The project concerns rationalizing Chassis calculations for use in truck Frame design. The subject for analysis is a six-wheeled articulated truck, and the load cases under study is Lateral Loading, Frame Torsion and Vertical Load on Kingpin. Making robust deformation and stress models with a calculation time sufficiently short and accuracy consistently high for efficient design work is an arduous task. This report presents several approaches to tackle this type of problem. By means of simplifying contemporary modeling approaches and methods and automating the setup process, a method that enables short calculation iterations on a chassis frame of a truck is achieved. This is done using the Catia GAS framework in conjunction with several other licences commonly used by designers.

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 53-57.
The first notion of realcompactness in frames was introduced by Reynolds [1979], and it was shown by Madden and Vermeer [1986] that this coincides with the Lindelof property. My thesis advisor suggested that more general realcompactifications of a frame L could be constructed by considering regular sub σ-frames which join generate L. This was motivated by the fact that the Alexandroff bases, which are used to construct the Wallman realcompactifications of a space X, are, as shown by Gilmour, simply the regular sub σ-frames of the frame of open sets of X. The key definition of realcompactness needed here is due to Schlitt [1990] and it is his construction of the universal realcompactification that we modify in order to obtain the Wallman realcompactifications.

This research is part of a larger project called FrameNet Brasil that, among other aims, intends to, through corpus analyses, define the Portuguese frames based on the English ones described by the Berkeley FrameNet Project. Thereby, this work focuses on the description of the following Portuguese frames: Communication, Communication Means and Communication Manner. This study is supported by the frame semantics theory and was developed according to the Berkeley FrameNet Project model. First, the frames were described and the core and non-core elements were defined. Then, the lexical units were annotated in the corpora chosen. By doing this, it was possible to create tables with the patterns found and compare then to the English original. The initial hypothesis that the Portuguese frames are similar to the English ones was confirmed, even though, we noticed that the ULs behave differently in the two languages analysed. For example, in English, the syntatic realization of the FE Message for the LU babble is Obj.NP and Dep.QUO while in Portuguese is Obj.NP, Obj.QUO, INI, DNI. Analysing these three frames, this work contributes to the description of the Portuguese frames and to the creation, in the future, of a network with semantic equivalents among languages based on frame.

Abstract:
Light-frame shearwall assemblies have been successfully used to resist gravity and lateral loads, such as earthquake and wind, for many decades. However, there is a need for maintaining the structural integrity of such buildings even when large openings in walls are introduced. Wood portal frame systems have been identified as a potential alternative to meet some aspects of this construction demand. The overarching goal of the research is to develop wood portal frame bracing systems, which can be used as an alternative or in combination with light-frame wood shearwalls. This is done through investigating the behavior of wood portal frames using the MIDPLY shearwall framing technique. A total of 21 MIDPLY corner joint tests were conducted with varying bracing details. Also, a finite element model was developed and compared with test results from the current study as well as studies by others. It was concluded from the corner joint tests that the maximum moment resistance increased with the addition of metal straps or exterior sheathings. The test results also showed a significant increase in the moment capacity and rotational stiffness by replacing the Spruce-Pine Fir (SPF), header with the Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) header. The addition of the FRP to the standard wall configuration also resulted in a significant increase in the moment capacity. However, no significant effect was observed on the stiffness properties of the corner joint. The FE model was capable of predicting the behavior of the corner joints and the full-scale portal frames with realistic end-conditions. The model closely predicted the ultimate lateral capacity for all the configurations but more uncertainty was found in predicting the initial stiffness. The FE model used to estimate the behavior of the full-scale portal frames constructed using the MIDPLY framing techniques showed a significant increase in the lateral load carrying capacity when compared with the traditional portal frame. It was also predicted using the full-scale FE model that the lateral load carrying capacity of the MIDPLY portal frame would increase with the addition of the metal straps on exterior faces. A parametric study showed that using a Laminated Strand Lumber (LSL) header increased the lateral load carrying capacity and the initial stiffness of the frames relative to the SPF header. The study also showed that there was an increase in the capacity if high strength metal straps were used. Doubling of the nail spacing at header and braced wall segment had a considerable effect on the lateral capacity of portal frame. Also, the initial stiffness was reduced for all the configurations with the doubling of the nail spacing at the header and braced wall segment in comparison with the reference frame.

Abstract:

The demand for efficient communication and data storage is continuously increasing and signal representation and compression are important factors in digital communication and storage systems.

This work deals with Frame based signal representation and compression. The emphasis is on the design of frames suited for efficient representation, or for low bit rate compression, of classes of signals.

Traditional signal decompositions such as transforms, wavelets, and filter banks, generate expansions using an analysis-synthesis setting. In this thesis we concentrate on the synthesis or reconstruction part of the signal expansion, having a system with no explicit analysis stage. We want to investigate the use of an overcomplete set of vectors, a frame or an overcomplete dictionary, for signal representations and allow sparse representations. Effective signal representations are desirable in many applications, where signal compression is one example. Others can be signal analysis for different purposes, reconstruction of signals from a limited observation set, feature extraction in pattern recognition and so forth.

The lack of an explicit analysis stage originates some questions on finding the optimal representation. Finding an optimal sparse representation from an overcomplete set of vectors is NP-complete, and suboptimal vector selection methods are more practical. We have used some existing methods like different variations of the Matching Pursuit (MP) [52] algorithm, and we developed a robust regularized FOCUSS to be able to use FOCUSS (FOCal Underdetermined System Solver [29]) under lossy conditions.

In this work we develop techniques for frame design, the Method of Optimal Directions (MOD), and propose methods by which such frames can successfully be used in frame based signal representation and in compression schemes. A Multi Frame Compression (MFC) scheme is presented and experiments with several signal classes show that the MFC scheme works well at low bit rates using MOD designed frames. Reconstruction experiments provides complimentary evidence of the good properties of the MOD algorithm.

Abstract:
One of the most important practical problems in conducting sample surveys is the list that can be used for selecting the sample is generally incomplete or out of date. Therefore, sample surveys can produce seriously biased estimates of the population parameters. On the other hand updating a list is a difficult and very expensive operation. Multiple-frame sampling refers to surveys where two or more frames are used and independent samples are taken respectively from each of the frames. It is assumed that the union of the different frames covers the whole population. There are two major reasons for the use of multiple-frame sampling method. One is that, using two or more frames can cover most of the target population and therefore reduces biases due to coverage error. The second is that multipleframe sampling design may result in considerable cost savings over a single frame design.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, we compare the performances of three frame replenishment coding schemes for noiseless and noisy channel transmission. For the noisy channel case, we propose a combined source-channel coding scheme which provides error protection in order to improve the performance. The three frame replenishment coding techniques are: basic frame replenishment coding (BFR), label replenishment coding using vector quantization (LRVQ) and codeword replenishment coding using vector quantization (CWRVQ). Our simulation results demonstrate that for a noiseless channel, the LRVQ and CWRVQ techniques provide better performance, and tolerance to motion in the picture, compared to BFR technique. However, in the presence of channel noise LRVQ and CWRVQ techniques exhibit high sensitivities, resulting in poor performance. We propose to use a combined source-channel coding technique with three different error protection schemes where the bit rates for the source code and channel code are adjusted so as to minimize the mean square error. Simulation results demonstrate that the three error protection schemes provide a significant improvement in performance for LRVQ and CWRVQ without sacrificing transmission bandwidth. Abstract:
The Bogie frame is an important and integral member of bogie. In Indian Railways, LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches are used as passenger coaches. They are equipped with FIAT bogie frames. Inorder to overcome the limitations of the existing FIAT bogie frame structure, a new bogie frame structure namely New CASNUB Bogie Frame is designed to equip with LHB coach. The New CASNUB Bogie Frame design is validated by conducting Stress analysis using ANSYS Mechanical APDL software. The stresses induced in both the frame structures are compared. Stresses induced in the New CASNUB Bogie frame are lesser than in the FIAT Bogie frame and are within the allowable stress limits of material used. New CASNUB Bogie Frame can be used as an alternative for LHB coaches in Indian Railways.
