Abstract:
This research focuses on manuscript fragments preserved in the State Archives of Modena which originate from the Archivio Estense: it has been revealed that a significant number of these fragments come from the bindings of volumes that make up the archival complex of the House of Este, the largest collection held at the State Archives of Modena - this archival fund spans from 1317 to 1797 and comprises a diverse range of documents in terms of quantity and types, yet it remains coherent due to its origin from a single institutional context. The thesis begins by providing a detailed analysis of the archival history of the fragment collection, tracing its origins and exploring its previous research paths. Additionally, it suggests an ideal expansion of the collection through a census, conducted during the research, that has led to the discovery and identification of approximately 50 new Latin fragments reused in the registers of the Archivio Estense, still in situ. Hence, it will be the first study to disclose a significant portion of the medieval manuscript heritage that has survived in fragmentary form and largely remained unpublished. In contrast to previous research that focused on the analysis of individual exemplars or groups of fragments with similar characteristics (for example, the Hebrew fragments or those with musical notation), this thesis offers a comprehensive approach by examining fragmentary evidence attributable to the same context of reuse. The core of the thesis focuses on the methodology developed for reconstructing provenances defined as "archaeological", i.e. related to the material context of fragment discovery, particularly focusing on witnesses reused in the bindings of the Archivio Estense registers.Furthermore, the thesis includes documentary fragments - typically excluded from fragmentology studies - providing additional research opportunities and offering significant insights into systematic aspects of reuse, especially within the domains ruled by the Este family. This interdisciplinary approach highlights the importance of archival and diplomatic studies in examining manuscript fragments, which were traditionally considered primarily from paleographical and codicological perspectives.A partial catalog of Latin parchment fragments attributed to the Estense Archives is presented, following the descriptive sheet model established in the Fragmentarium database. The analysis of the fragments includes the identification of content, dating, location, as well as material and historical-contextual aspects. In some cases, the common origin of multiple fragments has been recognized, allowing for the reconstruction of membra disiecta.Parallel to this research, a pilot project for digitizing fragments from the State Archives of Modena was carried out in collaboration with the ARCE Studies Center at the University of Bologna. This project focused on selected specimens for cataloging, with metadata coordination undertaken by the thesis author; a report on the activities conducted within the project is included in the thesis, along with reflections on the adopted methodologies

Abstract:
In this thesis, we provide the palaeographic edition and the translation of the Hebrew manuscript fragments of the Historical Archives of Gerona with Catalan written in Hebrew characters (14th-15th centuries), reused as book bindings of medieval notarial books. Textual and linguistic analyses are provided for this entire corpus, and, through this examination, we value the use of the language among the Jewish community. The collection contains a diverse typology of documents of which we present an overview. We have found many pages from moneylender registers concerning money lent predominantly to merchants from Gerona and their surroundings and also related to taxation. So we also focus on the study and contextualization of such economic manuscripts.

Electronic Thesis or Diss., Rennes 2, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024REN20015.

Abstract:
This thesis delves into the study of Timagenes of Alexandria, a historian from the Augustan era, and his impact on Pompey Trogue’ Philippic Histories, Strabo's Geography, and Pliny the Elder's Natural History. By comparing ancient texts, latin and greek, we've discovered five new fragments of Timagenes' historical works, that merit inclusion in F. Jacoby’s collection. Thesefragments delve into Gaulish and Alpine history, a subject that Timagenes explored with particular interest through ethnography and ancient legends. Additionally, they reference the anabasis of Alexander, a topic Timagenes was familiar with through the works of Cleitarchus. The portrait of Timagenes that emerges from these fragments is that of an Alexandrian scholareager to impart Hellenistic knowledge to Roman cultural circles. It was in Rome that he undertook to teach Attic rhetoric and wrote his historical works, all while maintaining close ties with his hometown, Alexandria. From a historical perspective, Timagenes emerges as a worthy heir to the greek historiographical tradition, particularly that represented by Herodotus and Theopompus. Timagenes’ work exerted significant influence on the literary productions of the Augustan era, especially in the field of Gaulish and Alpine history: indeed, Pompey Trogue incorporated Timagenes’ accounts into the central books of his historical work (XXXXXII), while Strabo cited the historian in Book IV of his Geography

Abstract:
The main purpose of this work is to give access to the discourses, fragments and testimonials of Alcidamas of Elea (4th century BC), a rhetor born in Asia Minor, Gorgias' disciple and Isocrates’ great rival. This author is a relatively unknown figure of the history of philosophy. This work includes a first part introductive and methodological where are treated the problems posed by the very nature of the fragmentary corpus and of the quotation in Ancient Greece, the state of investigation and the motives why it is necessary to retranslate Alcidamas’ works. The second part is the translation itself: the discourses, fragments and testimonials are edited with an updated critical apparatus, an introduction, a translation and numerous complementary notes. A synthetic lexical study of the psychological vocabulary makes up the third part and aims to prove the existence in Alcidamas’ works of a philosophically consistent psychological vocabulary. This study will allow us to show the reason why a psychological vocabulary puts the emphasis on the coherence and innovative view of Alcidamas

Hamilton, Elizabeth P. K. "A Study of Early Sixteenth-Century English Music Fragments from the DIAMM Database." Thèse, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/20241.

Full text
Abstract:
While the study of complete sources is very valuable, and has contributed greatly to what is understood of music history, the perspective they contribute is limited because they cannot reveal information about how music and music sources were most often used. The study of functional sources, more probably created for use, allows for more insight into how music was performed and understood, and how such sources were created, used and valued. This study examines twelve fragmentary early sixteenth-century English sources from the Digital Image Archive of Medieval Music (DIAMM) database, constituting a sample of functional music sources in this period. The study of this sampling reveals information about how functional manuscripts were created, used and valued in England during this time period. Some of the fragments contain works with concordances. These concordances are compared using variant comparison, where differences in the versions of the work are considered and weighed. The comparative study of concordances provides insight into the transmission of the versions, scribal and performance culture, as well as into music culture in general. Overall, the study of this sampling of early sixteenth-century functional English sources provides a clearer understanding of the use of accidentals, scribes and scribal culture, performers, performance practice and music culture in England at this time, contributing to the understanding of music history.

Bell, Lonnie David. "Textual stability and fluidity exhibited in the earliest Greek manuscripts of John : an analysis of the second/third-century fragments with attention also to the more extensive papyri (P45, P66, P75)." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/11768.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an assessment of the character of textual transmission reflected in the pre-fourth century Greek manuscripts of the Gospel of John. Since John is the most attested New Testament book among the early papyri, has the highest number of papyri that share overlapping text, and is the best attested Christian text in the second century, it serves well as a case study into the level of fluidity and stability of the New Testament text in its earliest period of transmission. The transmission of New Testament writings in this period has been characterized by a number of scholars as error-prone, free, wild and chaotic. This thesis is an inquiry into the validity of this characterization. I contend that our earliest extant manuscripts should serve as the most relevant evidence for addressing this issue, both for the period in which they were copied and for inferences about the preceding period for which we lack manuscript evidence. My treatment of the earliest Greek manuscripts of John primarily involves a fresh and full assessment of the level of fluidity and stability exhibited in the 14 smaller fragments (P5, P22, P28, P39, P52, P90, P95, P106, P107, P108, P109, P119, P121, 0162) by identifying on the basis of internal evidence the character of variants and unique readings attested. Additionally, I compare the number, character and significance of the singular/sub-singular readings of each early fragmentary manuscript with those in the same portion of text in the major majuscule manuscripts up through the seventh century that share complete overlap. The unique readings of P66 and P75 are added to this comparison where they fully overlap with the smaller fragments. Since P45 and P66 have been particularly identified with a “free” manner of transmission, I include an extended discussion in my introductory section in which I engage with research on the character of transmission exhibited in these two witnesses. My analysis of these early manuscripts based on the internal evidence of readings allows for a more in-depth and accurate characterization of the freedom and/or care exhibited. The comparison of singular and sub-singular readings with those of the later majuscules facilitates a diachronic comparison of the number and nature of readings most likely to have been generated at the time in which each respective manuscript was transcribed. This latter step allows us to test, by way of these passages, whether or not the manuscript tradition can be fairly characterized as freer and more prone to corruption in the second and third centuries than in subsequent centuries. From these data, and in conjunction with observations made on any relevant physical features of the manuscripts themselves, I conclude that the copying of John during the second and third centuries was characterized largely by stability and by continuity with the later period. These conclusions serve the broader purpose of providing a window on the character of New Testament textual transmission in the earliest centuries.

Abstract:
Since his discovery in 1962, the Derveni Papyrus, the most ancient manuscript of Europe, has rase full of major questions about the transmission, the interpretation and the function of the orphic texts. The Derveni Papyrus offers us an emblematic testimony about the influence of Presocratic Philosophy on the orphic doctrines. This thesis is the first french critical edition of the Derveni Papyrus with a critical apparatus and notes on the text. This research paper also provides a monographic study of this document. We especially focused our attention on the orphic poem quoted by the author of the Derveni Papyrus, on the exegetical technics he employed and on the philosophical doctrines he proposed. We particularly compared the cosmological and philosophical theories of the Derveni Papyrus author with that of Heraclitus of Ephesus, Anaxagoras of Clazomenae, Diogenes of Apollonia and Archelaus of Athens

Shang-bo 01(2405)V《The Maha Prajna Paramita》manuscripts fragments collected in《Shanghai Museum collection Dunhuang -Turpan documents》are documents written on the reverse side of the Shang-bo 01《The Buddha Speaks of Vimalakirti V 1》manuscripts; its volume is 428.5cm × 24.5cm in total; the year and place of publishing were not written on it; we can only trace from its contents that it’s something about Sutra. The purpose of this study is to explore the year and place of publishing of these manuscripts. According to the historical records, Kumarajiva finished the translation of《The Maha Prajna Paramita》and《Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom》in later qin(405AD).and. the Shang-bo 01《The Buddha Speaks of Vimalakirti V 1》 manuscripts were written in the period of Five Barbarians Sixteen States.later liang Lu Guang(393AD).This study is based on the above clues, making use of historical research, Quantitative statistics as well as literature methodology and comprehensive analysis, and following the direction of:(1)the 3 sets of key word revealing from its contents,(2)the nearly 300 Variant chinese characters in the Manuscripts,(3)Calligraphy style etc, to achieve its goal. Also, this study compares《Hanzi Normative Glyphs》,《Ministry of Education-Dictionary of Chinese Character Variants》, network resources and unearthed ancient literature, analyzes the variant chinese characters in the ,manuscripts by Variance of stroke order, Variance of radical, Mix of radical, Variance of characters, and Variance of calligraphy style and find that most of the variant chinese characters were derived from 「Qin-Han Dynasty」. From perspective of Calligraphy style, the manuscripts are also conformable to the feature of Magistrate-calligraphy and regular-script in early Northern Dynasty. Thus this study presumes that these Manuscripts are actually precious Manuscripts in early 5th century. Only about one thousand in the tens of thousands Dunhuang -Turpan documents can be found their year of publishing, as for the earlier documents, it’s much more difficult to find their year of publishing. This study is to do a little bit of effort to help people nowdays to know the paleography.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the manuscript of the canons of St. George's church in Prague Castle from the 14th century called Fragmentum praebendarum (Prague, Czech National Library, sign. XIII A 2). The manuscript mentions many people related to St. George's church, contains many details about its liturgical life, and is especially focused on St. George's canons, their duties, and their benefices. Since the 18th century, the manuscript has been considered a valuable source for the history of St. George's church and the adjoining convent of Benedictine nuns, but so far, it has only been available in an edition from 1785. The new edition of the codex and its first Czech translation helps to identify many mentioned persons and places, as well as cited quotes. Together with its physical description and content analysis it broadens our knowledge about the origin of this manuscript, about the life in St. George's church during later Middle Ages and about the relationship between the male community of St. George's canons and the female convent of Benedictine nuns that together shared this church in the royal residence of Prague.
