Abstract:

[Various libraries and museums in France have in their holdings Qur'an manuscripts and fragments copied in the Western Islamic World between the twelfth and seventeenth centuries that are sometimes not properly identified. Leaving aside the Bibliothèque nationale de France, since its collection has already been fully described, the present paper collates information about such manuscripts from the various disparate catalogues or databases in which they are described.]

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This research focuses on manuscript fragments preserved in the State Archives of Modena which originate from the Archivio Estense: it has been revealed that a significant number of these fragments come from the bindings of volumes that make up the archival complex of the House of Este, the largest collection held at the State Archives of Modena - this archival fund spans from 1317 to 1797 and comprises a diverse range of documents in terms of quantity and types, yet it remains coherent due to its origin from a single institutional context. The thesis begins by providing a detailed analysis of the archival history of the fragment collection, tracing its origins and exploring its previous research paths. Additionally, it suggests an ideal expansion of the collection through a census, conducted during the research, that has led to the discovery and identification of approximately 50 new Latin fragments reused in the registers of the Archivio Estense, still in situ. Hence, it will be the first study to disclose a significant portion of the medieval manuscript heritage that has survived in fragmentary form and largely remained unpublished. In contrast to previous research that focused on the analysis of individual exemplars or groups of fragments with similar characteristics (for example, the Hebrew fragments or those with musical notation), this thesis offers a comprehensive approach by examining fragmentary evidence attributable to the same context of reuse. The core of the thesis focuses on the methodology developed for reconstructing provenances defined as "archaeological", i.e. related to the material context of fragment discovery, particularly focusing on witnesses reused in the bindings of the Archivio Estense registers.Furthermore, the thesis includes documentary fragments - typically excluded from fragmentology studies - providing additional research opportunities and offering significant insights into systematic aspects of reuse, especially within the domains ruled by the Este family. This interdisciplinary approach highlights the importance of archival and diplomatic studies in examining manuscript fragments, which were traditionally considered primarily from paleographical and codicological perspectives.A partial catalog of Latin parchment fragments attributed to the Estense Archives is presented, following the descriptive sheet model established in the Fragmentarium database. The analysis of the fragments includes the identification of content, dating, location, as well as material and historical-contextual aspects. In some cases, the common origin of multiple fragments has been recognized, allowing for the reconstruction of membra disiecta.Parallel to this research, a pilot project for digitizing fragments from the State Archives of Modena was carried out in collaboration with the ARCE Studies Center at the University of Bologna. This project focused on selected specimens for cataloging, with metadata coordination undertaken by the thesis author; a report on the activities conducted within the project is included in the thesis, along with reflections on the adopted methodologies

Abstract:
In this thesis, we provide the palaeographic edition and the translation of the Hebrew manuscript fragments of the Historical Archives of Gerona with Catalan written in Hebrew characters (14th-15th centuries), reused as book bindings of medieval notarial books. Textual and linguistic analyses are provided for this entire corpus, and, through this examination, we value the use of the language among the Jewish community. The collection contains a diverse typology of documents of which we present an overview. We have found many pages from moneylender registers concerning money lent predominantly to merchants from Gerona and their surroundings and also related to taxation. So we also focus on the study and contextualization of such economic manuscripts.

Electronic Thesis or Diss., Rennes 2, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024REN20015.

Abstract:
This thesis delves into the study of Timagenes of Alexandria, a historian from the Augustan era, and his impact on Pompey Trogue’ Philippic Histories, Strabo's Geography, and Pliny the Elder's Natural History. By comparing ancient texts, latin and greek, we've discovered five new fragments of Timagenes' historical works, that merit inclusion in F. Jacoby’s collection. Thesefragments delve into Gaulish and Alpine history, a subject that Timagenes explored with particular interest through ethnography and ancient legends. Additionally, they reference the anabasis of Alexander, a topic Timagenes was familiar with through the works of Cleitarchus. The portrait of Timagenes that emerges from these fragments is that of an Alexandrian scholareager to impart Hellenistic knowledge to Roman cultural circles. It was in Rome that he undertook to teach Attic rhetoric and wrote his historical works, all while maintaining close ties with his hometown, Alexandria. From a historical perspective, Timagenes emerges as a worthy heir to the greek historiographical tradition, particularly that represented by Herodotus and Theopompus. Timagenes’ work exerted significant influence on the literary productions of the Augustan era, especially in the field of Gaulish and Alpine history: indeed, Pompey Trogue incorporated Timagenes’ accounts into the central books of his historical work (XXXXXII), while Strabo cited the historian in Book IV of his Geography

Abstract:
The main purpose of this work is to give access to the discourses, fragments and testimonials of Alcidamas of Elea (4th century BC), a rhetor born in Asia Minor, Gorgias' disciple and Isocrates’ great rival. This author is a relatively unknown figure of the history of philosophy. This work includes a first part introductive and methodological where are treated the problems posed by the very nature of the fragmentary corpus and of the quotation in Ancient Greece, the state of investigation and the motives why it is necessary to retranslate Alcidamas’ works. The second part is the translation itself: the discourses, fragments and testimonials are edited with an updated critical apparatus, an introduction, a translation and numerous complementary notes. A synthetic lexical study of the psychological vocabulary makes up the third part and aims to prove the existence in Alcidamas’ works of a philosophically consistent psychological vocabulary. This study will allow us to show the reason why a psychological vocabulary puts the emphasis on the coherence and innovative view of Alcidamas

Abstract:
While the study of complete sources is very valuable, and has contributed greatly to what is understood of music history, the perspective they contribute is limited because they cannot reveal information about how music and music sources were most often used. The study of functional sources, more probably created for use, allows for more insight into how music was performed and understood, and how such sources were created, used and valued. This study examines twelve fragmentary early sixteenth-century English sources from the Digital Image Archive of Medieval Music (DIAMM) database, constituting a sample of functional music sources in this period. The study of this sampling reveals information about how functional manuscripts were created, used and valued in England during this time period. Some of the fragments contain works with concordances. These concordances are compared using variant comparison, where differences in the versions of the work are considered and weighed. The comparative study of concordances provides insight into the transmission of the versions, scribal and performance culture, as well as into music culture in general. Overall, the study of this sampling of early sixteenth-century functional English sources provides a clearer understanding of the use of accidentals, scribes and scribal culture, performers, performance practice and music culture in England at this time, contributing to the understanding of music history.

Abstract:
This study examines the use of punctūs (or ‘pointing’) for punctuation in the most recently discovered Leipzig fragment (MS L) of the Hêliand, focusing on the frequency and distribution of pointing in various metrical and syntactic contexts of the poem. Data on punctuation, word order, and meter are provided as evidence for a close stemmatic relationship between the L- and P-fragments but a more long-distant relationship with the main Hêliand manuscript C. This evidence supports findings in Schmid (2006) that the L- and P-fragments might come from the same codex and that the later MS C diverges from these fragments and their common Vorlage.

Abstract:
This study analyses the distinctive features of a group of eleven Torah fragments from the Taylor-Schechter collection of Cairo Genizah manuscripts, which appear to come from related regions and use the signs dagesh and shewa in three related ways to reinforce a standard of pronunciation of the biblical text. The three uses of these signs have, individually, been associated with Palestino-Tiberian vocalisation, or labelled as ‘Extended Tiberian’. I contribute a fresh analysis by contextualising the signs with each other, showing how they work together to preserve a standard form of pronunciation of the biblical text through reinforcing the syllabification when the text is read aloud. I also examine the codicological features of each of these fragments, which appear very similar to each other. I conclude that they constitute a group, and I infer what their physical and linguistic features reveal about their practical function in the reading and study of the Hebrew Bible in the medieval period.

Abstract:
On 26 May 1944, the library of Chartres was destroyed by fire. Of its 518 medieval manuscripts, mainly coming from the cathedral and the abbey of Saint-Père-en-Vallée, about 40% survive in fragments of varied states of conservation. The manuscripts were restored at the Bibliothèque nationale of Paris between 1944 and 1948. Since 2005, l’Institut de recherche et d’histoire des textes (CNRS) has directed a complex project that includes the digitalisation of manuscripts (in some cases, following the relaxation of the parchment), their publication in the IRHT virtual library (BVMM, Bibliothèque virtuelle des manuscrits médiévaux), the virtual rearrangement of fragments in their correct order, the study of manuscripts, theirs owners and old libraries, the maintenance and up-dates of the dedicated website.

Abstract:
The Viennese music theoretician Heinrich Schenker opposed modernity during his entire life. At first, this opposition applied to new technologies as well. Despite his skepticism, he purchased a radio shortly after the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (RAVAG) started broadcasting in October 1924 and soon became an avid radio listener. Schenker quickly grasped the advantages of this new transmission medium and used it to further his own interests, aided by personal contacts with the RAVAG. In 1928, his associate Otto Erich Deutsch delivered a radio lecture co-authored with Schenker about the goals of the “Archive for Photograms of Musical Master Manuscripts” which was founded at Schenker’s instigation. In 1934, the RAVAG sponsored a competition, awarding the best text to a song fragment by Franz Schubert which in turn was discovered by Deutsch. Since the textless fragment lacks the final measures, Schenker had previously composed an ending for the song which was also performed on the radio.

Abstract:
Abstract This manuscript is on the structural characterization of a turbine casing in terms of blade containment. Gas turbines experience unintentional blade loss events in service for various reasons such as fatigue and the engines are certified on the basis that these events do not cause hazardous outcomes. In certain conditions, such as permanent loss of load after a shaft or transmission failure, the turbine stage(s) may accelerate to excessively high speeds creating the possibility of disk burst. An LS-DYNA explicit finite element model of a bullet to plate experiment have been prepared with flat nose projectiles. Following the method verification, the procedure was applied for a turbine stage with a single layer and a multi-layer casing to assess the performance of those in a blade-off at overspeed conditions when turbine experiences permanent loss of load. The intention with the multi-layer casing is to allow penetration within the first layer to dissipate the energy of the fragments and to contain them within the second layer.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract The Wells Front-End Loading (FEL) workflow is a critical phase in the planning and design of oil well projects, enabling efficient cost optimization and decision-making before project execution. However, the current FEL workflow suffers from inefficiencies caused by manual registration, localized record-keeping, repetitive iterations, and dynamic stakeholder expectations influenced by oil price uncertainties. Furthermore, fragmented data connectivity and the unavailability of legacy data hinder seamless data flow and digital adoption throughout the well life cycle. To address these challenges, this paper introduces Wells Front End Engineering Nexus (FENEX), a centralized web-based workflow platform that digitalizes the FEL workflow and offers anywhere and anytime accessibility. The FENEX application is supported by the Well Planning Suite (WPS) as the orchestrator to enable the execution of FEL workflow, perform detailed engineering design and ensure a smooth handover to the execution team. This manuscript presents FENEX as a comprehensive solution for improving the FEL workflow. It highlights the FENEX dashboard, critical roles of WPS and some enhancement features, i.e. introduction of features of "Campaign", workflow integration & approval process amongst the Field Development Plan (FDP) team & Technical Assurers (TA), guided workflow for well engineering and input for efficient project tracking & monitoring via FENEX. In the effort to realize FENEX, this paper will also discuss the key challenges in managing the segmented well databases between well design planning and well operational records which could impair the seamless data connectivity throughout the whole well life cycle. As such, a drastic reshaping of the data landscape was required to mitigate this where all data are consolidated into one Cloud database, wellSCAPE promoting a single source of truth for all well design, planning and operational records data. The implementation of FENEX addresses the limitations of the current FEL workflow, streamlining processes, enhancing efficiency, and reducing costs. By centralizing project data and promoting seamless data connectivity, FENEX overcomes the challenges of localized record keeping, fragmented data landscape, and the absence of legacy data. The platform empowers stakeholders to make informed decisions, optimize value extraction, and drive digital adoption in the oil and gas industry. The introduction of FENEX represents a significant step towards efficient collaboration, optimized value extraction, and enhanced evaluation efficiency. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for industry professionals seeking to streamline the FEL workflow and leverage digital tools to achieve project success in a rapidly changing energy landscape.

Abstract:
Abstract Considering the nature of lumpsum turnkey contracts in the Middle East, multiple performance optimization initiatives have been engineered to accelerate well delivery without compromising well acceptance and compliance criteria. One of the most critical operations in these wells is the successful and efficient running of Inflow Control Device (ICD) as part of the lower completion across ±5, 000 feet of 6⅛-in. open hole lateral. Historically, this operation was associated with severe non-productive events and in worst case scenario, abandonment of entire section and eventual sidetrack. This study discusses detailed engineering analysis to enhance open preparation without a need to perform wiper trip with drilling BHA by creatively optimizing the design of cleanout and reaming bottom hole assemblies (BHAs) and the strategy of logging operation. Historically, dedicated trips were separately performed for borehole logging, open hole conditioning and cased hole cleanout. These trips were combined into a single BHA through application of fit-for-purpose technologies and optimization of operational sequence to minimize completion phase operational time. Moreover, risk of differential sticking while running completion string across highly permeable horizontal lateral was reduced by utilization of optimum completion fluids and efficient centralization program. Finally, an integrated model of real-time monitoring that interlinks trajectory, open hole, and BHA data and produces a sophisticated and accurate simulation of wellbore conditions based on previous logging and tripping data allowing for in-time intervention even prior to running completion string into wellbore. During the completion campaign of over 30 wells, all engineering, operational and monitoring solutions have been implemented and successfully allowed for 31%-time reduction in completion related operation. The creative drilling BHA design enabled elimination of mechanical wellbore risks associated with wellbore tortuosity and under-gauge and washed-out hole and thereby eradicating the need for wiper trip during drilling phase which was conducted to confirm hole conations prior to preforming Wire Line Tough Logging Condition (TLC) operation. This decreased well construction time by more than ±12-24 hours as the drilling BHA was directly pulled out hole to surface after reaching target well depth. Combined BHA strategy and optimization of operational sequence enabled wellbore cleanout, logging, and simulation to be conducted on single BHA run instead of three runs (TLC-logging run, reaming/ dummy BHA run, cleanout BHA run) which reduced overall well construction time by over ±48 hours. The three BHA runs were not historically possible to be combined due to tools and technology limitation as will be discussed in the following manuscript. Finally, proper selection of optimum drilling fluids, and bridging strategy integrated with enhanced centralization program and real-time monitoring system of open hole have successfully ensured the deployment success of ICD lower completion in all wells where the approach was implemented. The manuscript shifts the focus away from fragmented engineering solutions into more integrated and multidisciplinary solutions that maximize the optimization's impact on the entire construction process rather than individual operation. The impact of this project has been acknowledged regionally and established a benchmark on the way of conducting lumpsum turnkey business.

Abstract:
The historical legacy of the TITANIC defies a brief manuscript of 20- plus pages. Much better, and more detailed work has been done to give the subject a “modern” context, notably by the United States Coast Guard in the Summer 2012 issue of Proceedings of the Marine Safety and Security Council, vol.69, no. 2, from which the following remarks draw heavily. The night of April 14, 1912 – the famous “night to remember,” chosen by Walter Lord as the title of his excellent history – presents us with many questions that will probably never be answered. Most of these are technical: the “what ifs” that, in one form or another, haunt us after, but usually not before, a disaster at sea. The importance of safety at sea is shown by the pictures available since 1985, showing the broken fragments of wreckage lying on the ocean floor south of Cape Race. Since the wreckage was located, we can see the pairs of empty shoes and boots that mark where human remains once lay. The TITANIC facts are familiar: at 11:40 P.M. on April 14, 1912, she collided with an iceberg. Two hours and 40 minutes later, the pride of the White Star Line began her two-mile plunge to the bottom of the North Atlantic. Of the 2,224 passengers and crew aboard, only 710 survived. While there have been sea disasters that produced greater loss of life, the sinking of TITANIC is probably the most famous and far-reaching maritime disaster in history. While the loss of TITANIC has been described as “perhaps the most documented and least commonly understood marine casualty in maritime history”, a positive result of the TITANIC disaster, and of course many other tragedies at sea that have occurred since, has been to establish a formal protocol of goals and procedures for analysis and investigation. These goals, from the point of view of the investigator/flag state, other governments, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and other regulators, is the identification of unsafe conditions, in order to identify them in advance of future disasters. Today, responsible regimes charged with administration of the safety of life at sea are said to follow a philosophy of prevention first and, then, response. The 1985 discovery of the wreck of the TITANIC sparked a new round of forensic investigation. The bow section was found largely intact with the stern section in hundreds of pieces approximately 2,000 feet away. The realization that TITANIC’s hull had broken at some point during the sinking added a new understanding of the already famous disaster. The discovery of the wreck also provided new forensic evidence in the form of recovered artifacts and detailed surveys. It was these new clues and advances in computer-driven engineering tools that gave rise to a revision of previously held beliefs. The significance of the TITANIC, and the events that led to such a large loss of life, remain with us today.

Full text
Abstract:
The worldwide market for ornamental saltwater invertebrates supplies the needs of millions of aquarium hobbyists, public exhibitions (i.e., zoos) universities and research institutions. With respect to reef building corals, it is estimated that more than half a million coral colonies/year from a total 93 genera, were exported globally during the period of 1985-1997. International value of retail sale of live coral trade alone is estimated as $78 million in 1997 (not including the illegally, widely smuggled material). The continuous, large-scale collection of marine organisms is responsible, in many places, for the destruction of coral reefs. The expected expansion of the trade further threatens these fragile habitats. While no true captive-bred corals are commercially available, our long-term goal is to develop ex situ inland farming of coral colonies that will circumvent the need for in situ collections and will provide domesticated specimens for the trade and for research. We simultaneously studied two model branching coral species, Stylophora pistillata (Pocilloporidae; in Israel) and Porites (Poritidae; in the US). The proposal included three specific aims: (a) To develop protocols for nubbins (small fragments, down to the size of a single polyp) usage in coral farming;(b) To address the significance of colony pattern formation to the coral trade; and (c) To develop the protocols of using nubbins in physiological and ecotoxicological assays (using oil dispersants, the expression of the stress protein HSP-70, household detergents, etc.). Ten scientific publications (published manuscripts, accepted for publications, submitted to scientific journals, in preparation), revealing results that were related to all three specific aims, originated from this BARD proposal. As a result of the work supported by the BARD, we have now, in hand, original and improved protocols for coral maintenance ex situ, proven expertise on manipulating coral colonies’ pattern formation and biological knowledge on island mariculture of reef corals (from Hawaii and from the Red Sea) amenable for the ornamental trade (for public and private aquaria use, for experimentation). At least one Israeli company (Red Sea Corals, Ltd., KibbutzSaar) is using our methodologies for further developing this new mariculture sector. We are now in the process of introducing the rationale and methodologies to Hawaiian private entities to expand dissemination of the research outcomes.

Abstract:
In this project we proposed to characterize the virus genome and the structural virion polypeptides to allow development of improved diagnostic approaches and potential vaccination strategies. These goals have been mostly achieved and the corresponding data were published in three papers (see below) and three more manuscripts are in preparation. The virion polypeptides of KHV strains isolated from USA (KHV-U) and Israel (KHV-I) were found to be identical. Purified viral DNA analyzed with a total of 5 restriction enzymes demonstrated no fragment length polymorphism between KHV-I and KHV-U but both KHV isolates differed significantly from the cyprinid herpesvirus (CHV) and the ictalurid herpesvirus (channel catfish virus or CCV). Using newly obtained viral DNA sequences two different PCR assays were developed that need to be now further tested in the field. We determined by pulse field analysis that the size of KHV genome is around 280 kbp (1-1. Bercovier, unpublished results). Sequencing of the viral genome of KHV has reached the stage where 180 kbp are sequenced (twice and both strands). Four hypothetical genes were detected when DNA sequences were translated into amino acid sequences. The finding of a gene of real importance, the thymidine kinase (TK) led us to extend the study of this specific gene. Four other genes related to DNA synthesis were found. PCR assays based on defined sequences were developed. The PCR assay based on TK gene sequence has shown improved sensitivity in the detection of KHV DNA compared to regular PCR assays. </P> <P><SPAN>With the ability to induce experimental infections in koi with KHV under controlled laboratory conditions we have studied the progress and distribution of virus in host tissues, the development of immunity and the establishment of latent infections. Also, we have investigated the important role of water temperature on severity of infections and mortality of koi following infections with KHV. These initial studies need to be followed by an increased focus on long-term fate of the virus in survivors. This is essential in light of the current &quot;controlled exposure program&quot; used by farmers to produce KHV &quot;naturally resistant fish&quot; that may result in virus or DNA carriers. </SPAN></P> <P><SPAN>The information gained from the research of this project was designed to allow implementation of control measures to prevent the spread of the virus both by improved diagnostic approaches and preventive measures. We have accomplished most of these goals but further studies are needed to establish even more reliable methods of prevention with increased emphases on improved diagnosis and a better understanding of the ecology of KHV. </SPAN>
