Abstract:
Objective: The paradigm was to establish phenyl and ortho-hydroxy phenyl linked imidazolyl triazolo hydroxamic acid derivatives as an antihyperglycemic agent. Methods: 100 mg/Kg body weight dose of phenyl and ortho-hydroxy Phenyl linked Imidazolyl triazolo Hydroxamic Acid derivatives (FP1-FP12) and standard glibenclamide were administered per os (p.o.) in the streptozotocin-induced hyperglycemic rats by glucose oxidase-peroxidase method and statistically evaluated by one way analysis of variance. Results: FP3 was potent as compare to standard glibenclamide (P < 0.05-0.001) and FP6, FP9, and FP4 were also effective as an antihyperglycemic agent. The activity profile of the molecule was as follows FP9< FP10< FP4< FP6<FP12< FP3. This study reflects that presence of para methoxy phenyl group linked with phenyl group in surface recognition portion and imidazolyl triazole group in linker portion associated with a sulfamethyl hydroxamic acid group in metal identifying the part in case of FP3 was resemble for antihyperglycemic activity. Conclusion: It was concluded that compounds possessing electron releasing groups on the aromatic rings in the surface recognition part considerably enhanced the antihyperglycemic activity.

Abstract:
Endophytic fungi that are classified into the genus Neotyphodium have developed into a very unique niche. Their specific host plants are the fescues and ryegrasses. Through fungal biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, the host plant receives several benefits. These benefits include resistance to insects such as aphids, chinch bug, and argentine stem weevil, increased drought tolerance, and increased competiveness. These secondary metabolites comprise four groups of alkaloids. The alkaloids are loline, peramine, Lolitrem B, and ergovaline. The quantitative alkaloid profile is unique for each isolate. The characterization of these endophytes is necessary for identification of specific isolates. We report the characterization of ten endophytic strains Lp1, Lp2, Lp3, Lm4, Lm5, Fp6, Fp7 Fp8, Fp9, Fp10. The characterization of each isolate includes: morphology, sporulation, growth rates, microsatellite fingerprint, and alkaloid profile. The isolated colonies bear resemblance to raised brain-like structures and are yellow to tan in color. Growth rates range between 0.1 and 0.25 mm/day. No colonies produced any form of sporulation. Fp6 was found to have the highest loline concentration of any isolate. AFLP analysis was performed on the isolates to test for relatedness. Distinct clades were formed and grouped by host. The main groups were those isolated from Lolium or Festuca varieties. Isolates Fp8 and Fp9 were most related to each other, and have also been found to be doubly infected. The double infection is described to be Phialophora-like, due to the presence of thin highly branched hyphae when observed under light microscopy with aniline blue staining.

Abstract:
Background: Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can result in severe developmental disorders in the child. Symptoms of the fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) comprise growth deficiencies, abnormal facial phenotype and damage or dysfunction of the central nervous system. Numerous diagnostic methods for facial phenotyping in FASD exist, but diagnoses are still difficult. Our aim was to find additional and objective methods for the verification of FAS(D). Methods: Three-dimensional dental models of 60 children (30 FAS and 30 controls) were used to metrically determine maximum palatal depths at the median palatine raphe. Three-dimensional facial scans were taken, and vertical distances of the face were measured at five defined facial landmarks (FP1–FP5) for each child. Results: Mean palatal height, total facial length (FP1–FP5) as well as FP4–FP5 did not significantly differ between the FAS group and the control group. Comparing vertical facial subdivisions, however, resulted in significant differences for distances FP1 to FP2 (p = 0.042, FAS > controls), FP2 to FP3 (p < 0.001, FAS < controls), FP3 to FP4 (p < 0.001, FAS > controls) and FP3 to FP5 (p = 0.007, FAS > controls). Conclusions: Metric vertical measurements of the face can be used as additional objective criteria for FAS diagnoses. However, no significant differences were reported for palatal depth evaluation in the specific age range tested in the present study.

"Delta-1 Promotes Soluble IL-6R-Mediated Action of IL-6 on Human Erythropoiesis While Counteracting the Effect of IL-6 on the Generation of Myeloid-Lineage Cells." Abstract:
Abstract Notch ligand Delta-1 is shown to influence proliferation and differentiation of hematopoietic progenitors by interacting with various cytokines. IL-6 exerts various effects on human hematopoiesis by activating gp130 via soluble IL-6 receptor (R) as well as membrane-bound IL-6R. However, little is known about the interaction between Delta-1 and gp130 activation in human hematopoiesis. We previously reported that Delta-1 in combination with IL-6R/IL-6 fusion protein FP6, which directly and agonistically activates gp130, enhances the production of mixed and pure erythroid progenitors from cord blood CD34+CD38− cells, while not significantly affecting the generation of myeloid progenitors (ASH 2004). Here, we examined the interaction between Delta-1 and gp130 activation in the generation of erythroid cells and myeloid-lineage cells from cord blood CD34+CD38− cells in serum-free suspension cultures. In the presence of SCF, Flt3L, TPO, and IL-3 (4GF), Delta-1 acted synergistically with FP6 to promote the production of CD36+glycophorin A (GPA)high erythroid cells from CD34+CD38− cells, whereas few CD36+GPAhigh erythroid cells were generated by Delta-1, IL-6, and Delta-1 plus IL-6. When we assessed the stage of erythroid cells affected by Delta-1 and FP6, Delta-1, in conjunction with FP6, augmented the generation of CD36+GPAhigh erythroid cells from CD34+CD38− cell-derived CD36+GPA− erythroid progenitors equivalent to BFU-E stage but not from CD34+CD38−cell-derived CD36+GPAlow erythroid progenitors equivalent to CFU-E stage. On the other hand, IL-6 and FP6 increased the production of CD14+ monocytic cells and CD15+ granulocytic cells from CD34+CD38− cells. Delta-1 had opposite effect and antagonized the stimulatory effect of IL-6 and FP6 on the generation of monocytic and granulocytic cells. Although the development of CD1a+CD14− dendritic cells from CD34+CD38− cells was suppressed by IL-6 and FP6 but instead potentiated by Delta-1, Delta-1 competed with the inhibitory effect of IL-6 and FP6 on the generation of dendritic cells. These data indicate that Delta-1 modulates the effect of IL-6 on human hematopoiesis by enhancing its soluble IL-6R-mediated action on early erythropoiesis while antagonizing its effect on the generation of myeloid-lineage cells.

Abstract:
Strengthening innovation capacity of European small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by means of their participation in the Sixth (FP6-SME) and Seventh (FP7-SME) Framework Programmes was an important objective of the European Union policies. Since SMEs form the backbone of the Italian economy, their strong presence in an international network such as the one fostered by the European Union represent a great opportunity, particularly for firms located in southern Italy – the marginal macro-area of the country in terms of innovation – to increase their competitiveness. Based on the major literature on topics such as knowledge exchange, innovation networks and disparities, and on descriptive statistics and a cluster analysis in a dynamic perspective, our study aimed to assess the actual intra-regional, extra-regional and transnational links established by the Italian SMEs and public research establishments (PREs). In a next step we aim at assessing if knowledge flows fostered by the FP6-SME and FP7-SME were mainly concentrated in the traditionally winning macro-regional areas (North and Centre) or led to more widespread benefits in favour of SMEs located in the marginal South. The findings of our study revealed a very limited number of connections - with a related weak knowledge exchange - involving the southern regions, implying a reinforcement of innovation activities in the traditionally most dynamic industrial areas of the country.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to assess impacts of European Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP) on Turkish participants, focusing on Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) Information Society Technologies (IST) priority. A two-sided approach was employed while assessing impacts. First, DELPHI method was used to quantify and prioritise expectations of the decision makers in key stakeholders
second, a survey was designed to measure additionalities and the level of achievements of program participants. Scientific and technological impacts, economic impacts, institutional impacts and impacts on collaboration and sectoral knowledge were questioned as four main impact criteria. It is demonstrated in survey results that, significantly high levels of impacts were achieved in scientific and technological impacts and impacts on collaborations and development of sectoral knowledge. Nonetheless, economic impacts were noted to be lowest among all impact factors. Level of impacts were tested for different control factors including project instrument, organization type, project activity, project role and received grant. Project role was proved to be the most important control factor affecting the level of impact. It is presented in comparison of decision makers&rsquo
expectations and participants&rsquo
achievements that, decision makers&rsquo
expectations were mostly satisfied by participants except for economic impacts. Turkish participants in FP6 IST field had significant impacts in three out of four main impact factors. Moreover, decision makers expectations were highly satisfied except for economic impact factors. The results of this study, relying on the assessed impacts of FP6 IST field, support Turkey&rsquo
s participation in forthcoming FPs.

Kenyon, Colin Peter. "The dissociation of ammonium salts and their effect on the physiology and biochemistry of L-lysine synthesis by Corynebacterium glutamicum FP6." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1004094.

Full text
Abstract:
The availability and assimilation of NH₄⁺ plays an integral role in the growth of microorganisms and the production of amino acids by these organisms. This study investigated the dissociation of NH₄⁺in aqueous solution, its availability and effect on the enzymes of NH₄⁺ assimilation and its influence on lysine production by Corynebacterium glutamicum. In aqueous solution the extent of dissociation of NH₄C1, {NH₄)₂S0₄ and (NH₄)₂HP0₄ increases with decreasing concentration. A model is proposed for the dissociation of these molecules. It is believed that at very low concentrations, dissociation to NH₃ plus the respective counter-ions occurs. At these low concentrations the NH₃ acts as the substrate for glutamine synthetase. At the higher concentrations dissociation is to NH₄⁺ which is the substrate for glutamate dehydrogenase. At these higher concentrations the enzyme activities obtained for glutamate dehydrogenase, at equivalent concentrations of the above ammonium salts, were different when based on the total concentration of NH₄⁺, and similar when based on the concentration of free NH₄⁺. L-Iysine occurs in the +1 ionic form, at pH 7,2. The lysine which is produced during fermentation associates with the anionic counter-ion of the ammonium salt used. The concentration of the free NH₄⁺ in the media appears to affect both the rate of lysine synthesis as well as the yield. The lysine fermentation occurs in two stages; a growth (or replicative) phase, during which very little lysine is produced, and a lysine synthesis (or maturation) phase. During the lysine synthesis phase there is no cell replication, however an increase in the mass of the biomass produced is apparent. Evidence is provided for the possible concomitant synthesis of the the cell wall polymer, glycerol teichoic acid, and lysine. On the basis of this evidence, a nucleotide balance is proposed for lysine and teichoic acid synthesis. The replicative phase and the maturation phase have to be effectively separated to obtain optimal lysine yields and titres. It is believed that teichoic acid synthesis during the replicative phase must be kept to a minimum for optimal yields and titres to be obtained, and on completion of the cell wall and therefore teichoic acid synthesis, lysine synthesis ceases. As the production of lysine appears to be affected by the NH₄⁺ concentration in the culture media, it is proposed that a futile cycle may exist around the transport and assimilation of the NH₄⁺. If the fermentations are run at low free NH₄⁺ concentrations, it was shown that lysine yields of 0,66, on the glucose utilised, are attainable during the fermentation.

Abstract:

3D graphic accelerators are often limited by their floating-point performance. A Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) has several specialized floating-point units to achieve high throughput and performance. The floating-point units consume a large part of total area, and power consumption, and hence architectural choices are important to evaluate when implementing the design. GPUs are specially tuned for performing a set of operations on large sets of data. The task of a 3D graphic solution is to render a image or a scene. The scene contains geometric primitives as well as descriptions of the light, the way each object reflects light and the viewer position and orientation. This thesis evaluates four different pipelined, vectorized floating-point multipliers, supporting 16-bit, 32-bit and 64-bit floating-point numbers. The architectures are compared concerning area usage, power consumption and performance. Two of the architectures are implemented at Register Transfer Level (RTL), tested and synthesized, to see if assumptions made in the estimation methodologies are accurate enough to select the best architecture to implement given a set of architectures and constraints. The first architecture trades area for lower power consumption with a throughput of 38.4 Gbit/s at 300 MHz clock frequency, and the second architecture trades power for smaller area with equal throughput. The two architectures are synthesized at 200 MHz, 300 MHz and 400 MHz clock frequency, in a 65 nm low-power standard cell library and a 90 nm general purpose library, and for different input data format distributions, to compare area and power results at different clock frequencies, input data distributions and target technology. Architecture one has lower power consumption than architecture two at all clock frequencies and input data format distributions. At 300 MHz, architecture one has a total power consumption of 1.9210 mW at 65 nm, and 15.4090 mW at 90 nm. Architecture two has a total power consumption of 7.3569 mW at 65 nm, and 17.4640 mW at 90 nm. Architecture two requires less area than architecture one at all clock frequencies. At 300 MHz, architecture one has a total area of 59816.4414 um^2 at 65 nm, and 116362.0625 um^2 at 90 nm. Architecture two has a total area of 50843.0 um^2 at 65 nm, and 95242.0469 um^2 at 90 nm.

Abstract:
Pharmacometrics is widely used in drug development. Models are developed to describe pharmacological measurements with data gathered from a clinical trial. The information can then be applied to, for instance, safely establish dose-response relationships of a substance. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is a common biomarker used by models within antihyperglycemic drug development, as it reflects the average plasma glucose level over the previous 8-12 weeks. There are five different nonlinear mixed-effects models that describes HbA1c-formation. They use different biomarkers such as mean plasma glucose (MPG), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), fasting plasma insulin (FPI) or a combination of those. The aim of this study was to compare their performances on a population and an individual level using model averaging (MA) and to explore if reduced trial durations and different treatment could affect the outcome. Multiple weighting methods were applied to the MA workflow, such as the Akaike information criterion (AIC), cross-validation (CV) and a bootstrap model averaging method. Results show that in general, models that use MPG to describe HbA1c-formation on a population level could potentially outperform models using other biomarkers, however, models have shown similar performance on individual level. Further studies on the relationship between biomarkers and model performances must be conducted, since it could potentially lay the ground for better individual HbA1c-predictions. It can then be applied in antihyperglycemic drug development and to possibly reduce sample sizes in a clinical trial. With this project, we have illustrated how to perform MA on the aforementioned models, using different biomarkers as well as the difference between model weights on a population and individual level.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter explores the long trajectory of European feminists’ contributions to peace research. Specifically, the coalescing of knowledge via specific Centers of Excellence has supported the recent development of feminist peace research (FPR) in Europe. FPR has also been influenced by the global normative framework of the Women, Peace and Security agenda (WPS), which relies on research conducted outside of Europe. While the diversity of WPS informed research evidences a thriving FPR field in Europe, it also reveals the limitations of what constitutes ‘Europe.’ Ultimately, the chapter shows how FPR remains exclusionary, with implications for knowledge production hierarchies.

Abstract:
The basic concept within both EC funded SAPIERR I and SAPIERR II projects (FP6) is that of one or more geological repositories developed in collaboration by two or more European countries to accept spent nuclear fuel, vitrified high-level waste and other long-lived radioactive waste from those partner countries. The SAPIERR II project (Strategic Action Plan for Implementation of Regional European Repositories) examines in detail issues that directly influence the practicability and acceptability of such facilities. This paper describes the work in the SAPIERR II project (2006–2008) on the development of a possible practical implementation strategy for shared, regional repositories in Europe and lays out the first steps in implementing that strategy.

Miralao, Virginia. Family planning studies in the Philippines: A review and synthesis. Population Council, 1994. http://dx.doi.org/10.31899/rh1994.1004.

Full text
Abstract:
This report, which summarizes the major study findings on population and family planning (FP) trends in the Philippines, was prepared for the Research Unit of the Family Planning Services (FPS) of the Department of Health (DOH). It was used by the FPS in its National Consultative Planning Workshop in early 1994 to formulate plans for the Philippine Family Planning Program for 1994–1995. Workshop participants included DOH Regional Family Planning Coordinators, representatives of local government offices engaged in population and health activities, and local NGOs and women's groups. The report alerted participants to population and FP issues and trends that could assist them in formulating their FP program targets and strategies in their own areas and localities. Study findings are organized into those relating to indicators of demand, and those bearing on the supply of FP services. Considering the large number of population and FP studies that have been made to date, this review limits itself to a presentation of related trends in fertility and FP awareness, approval, and use over time. The report provides a backdrop for the formulation and implementation of local action plans to advance the national FP program.
