Abstract:
Background: Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can result in severe developmental disorders in the child. Symptoms of the fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) comprise growth deficiencies, abnormal facial phenotype and damage or dysfunction of the central nervous system. Numerous diagnostic methods for facial phenotyping in FASD exist, but diagnoses are still difficult. Our aim was to find additional and objective methods for the verification of FAS(D). Methods: Three-dimensional dental models of 60 children (30 FAS and 30 controls) were used to metrically determine maximum palatal depths at the median palatine raphe. Three-dimensional facial scans were taken, and vertical distances of the face were measured at five defined facial landmarks (FP1–FP5) for each child. Results: Mean palatal height, total facial length (FP1–FP5) as well as FP4–FP5 did not significantly differ between the FAS group and the control group. Comparing vertical facial subdivisions, however, resulted in significant differences for distances FP1 to FP2 (p = 0.042, FAS > controls), FP2 to FP3 (p < 0.001, FAS < controls), FP3 to FP4 (p < 0.001, FAS > controls) and FP3 to FP5 (p = 0.007, FAS > controls). Conclusions: Metric vertical measurements of the face can be used as additional objective criteria for FAS diagnoses. However, no significant differences were reported for palatal depth evaluation in the specific age range tested in the present study.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Gas-cooled fast reactor (GFR) research is directed towards fulfilling the ambitious goals of Generation IV (Gen IV), that is, to develop a safe, sustainable, reliable, proliferation-resistant and economic nuclear energy system. The research is directed towards developing the GFR as an economic electricity generator, with good safety and sustainability characteristics. Fast reactors maximise the usefulness of uranium resources by breeding plutonium and can contribute to minimising both the quantity and radiotoxicity nuclear waste by actinide transmutation in a closed fuel cycle. Transmutation is particularly effective in the GFR core owing to its inherently hard neutron spectrum. Further, GFR is suitable for hydrogen production and process heat applications through its high core outlet temperature. As such GFR can inherit the non-electricity applications that will be developed for thermal high temperature reactors in a sustainable manner. The Euratom organisation provides a route by which researchers in all European states, and other non-European affiliates, can contribute to the Gen IV GFR system. This paper summarises the achievements of Euratom's research into the GFR system, starting with the 5th Framework programme (FP5) GCFR project in 2000, through FP6 (2005 to 2009) and looking ahead to the proposed activities within the 7th Framework Programme (FP7).

Abstract:
(author's abstract)

Abstract:
Pharmacometrics is widely used in drug development. Models are developed to describe pharmacological measurements with data gathered from a clinical trial. The information can then be applied to, for instance, safely establish dose-response relationships of a substance. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is a common biomarker used by models within antihyperglycemic drug development, as it reflects the average plasma glucose level over the previous 8-12 weeks. There are five different nonlinear mixed-effects models that describes HbA1c-formation. They use different biomarkers such as mean plasma glucose (MPG), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), fasting plasma insulin (FPI) or a combination of those. The aim of this study was to compare their performances on a population and an individual level using model averaging (MA) and to explore if reduced trial durations and different treatment could affect the outcome. Multiple weighting methods were applied to the MA workflow, such as the Akaike information criterion (AIC), cross-validation (CV) and a bootstrap model averaging method. Results show that in general, models that use MPG to describe HbA1c-formation on a population level could potentially outperform models using other biomarkers, however, models have shown similar performance on individual level. Further studies on the relationship between biomarkers and model performances must be conducted, since it could potentially lay the ground for better individual HbA1c-predictions. It can then be applied in antihyperglycemic drug development and to possibly reduce sample sizes in a clinical trial. With this project, we have illustrated how to perform MA on the aforementioned models, using different biomarkers as well as the difference between model weights on a population and individual level.

Abstract:
Function point analysis (FPA) is one of the measures used to achieve the functional size of software. It was determined, in Brazil, public procurement of software development should use FPA. However, one of the main criticisms made the FPA concerns the lack of reliability between different counters on the same count that, according to some researchers, the FPA rules are subjective, requiring that each counter do individual interpretations from them. There are various proposals in order to increase the reliability of the results generated with FPA. In General, the proposed approaches perform mappings between artifacts developed components in software life cycle with the concepts of FPA. However, such proposals simplify in more than 50% the rules laid down in FPA compromising the validity of the results generated by the scores. As the size of the software is used in the derivation of other measures, inconsistencies in sizes measured may compromise the measures derived, which negatively influence the decisions taken. Without standardization of functional sizes obtained and consequently without reliability of the results obtained, derived from measures of functional size, cost and effort, may be compromised, causing it to not help to positively influence these projects. In this context, the objective of this work is to develop and experimentally evaluate one approach to offer greater standardization and systematization in the implementation of FPA. For this, it is proposed to incorporate the artifact \"function point Tree\" to the FPA process. Its inclusion would allow additional data collection necessary for function point count, reducing the occurrence of personal interpretations of the counter, and consequently, the variation of size reported. The approach was called as Function Point Tree-based Function Point Analysis (FPT-FPA). This work is based on the method of Design Science research, whose goal is to extend the limits of the human and organizational capacities, creating new artifacts to troubleshoot unresolved or still partially resolved; in this work, it is the lack of reliability in application of FPA because of its scope for different interpretations. FPT-FPA were tested with 11 Systems analysts / requirements analysts, based on the specification of a human resources software measured by the IFPUG with 125 points, have modeled the function point Tree manually or via automated tool prototype developed. The results obtained indicate that the functional sizes calculated with FPT-FPA have coefficient of variation, respectively of 10.72% for reliability and 17.61% in relation to the validity of the measurement results generated. The FPA approach showed potential for better results can be obtained. It turns out that the main cause of the variations observed were related to the absence of information required for the tree of function points have not been identified any particular problem regarding the rules defined for FPT-FPA. Finally, it was found that the use of a prototype tool increases by up to 47% on efficiency function point count when compared to FPT-FPA manual

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter explores the long trajectory of European feminists’ contributions to peace research. Specifically, the coalescing of knowledge via specific Centers of Excellence has supported the recent development of feminist peace research (FPR) in Europe. FPR has also been influenced by the global normative framework of the Women, Peace and Security agenda (WPS), which relies on research conducted outside of Europe. While the diversity of WPS informed research evidences a thriving FPR field in Europe, it also reveals the limitations of what constitutes ‘Europe.’ Ultimately, the chapter shows how FPR remains exclusionary, with implications for knowledge production hierarchies.

Full text
Abstract:
A radius of gyration is a particle parameter obtainable through light- or x-ray scattering in the Rayleigh-Gans-Debye regime. Radii of gyration can also be theoretically defined and experimentally obtained for scattering in the Fraunhofer diffraction dominated regime. It is shown how this applies to both oriented and disoriented scattering for particles of general shape. For oriented particles, the parameter is the root-mean-square distance from a line passing through the particle's center of mass, along the direction of intensity scanned in the plane perpendicular to the incident radiation beam direction. For disoriented particles, any scanning direction in this plane will give a root-mean-square distance from the particle's center of mass. In both cases the particle is represented as a flat mask outline. Experimental procedures and particle properties necessary for obtaining the parameters are outlined. A simple laser procedure applicable at least to many particles in the 10-μm to 100-μm size range is described.

Full text
Abstract:
The voltage-dependent transfer characteristics of multimode slab waveguide electrooptic filters have been examined analytically in considerable detail, with special attention to the roles played by differential modal phase delays, modal dimensionality, and attenuation. This work has been motivated by attempts to achieve a more satisfactory match between some early experimental results and our computer simulations based on a multimode coupled-mode formalism.1 An important determination is the minimum number of modes (minimum dimensionality) that will allow a reliable representation of the model. We find that a dimensionality of 10 is essentially adequate for the device modeled, having a thickness of ~130 μm, operating near 0.475-μm wavelength. In addition, we find that inclusion of an initial dead length, with the attendant dephasing of modes, is an important factor in specifying appropriate modal input conditions to achieve an improved agreement with the experimental data. Suitable allowance for attenuation, particularly of the TM polarization component, also aids in improving this match.

Full text
Abstract:
The large electro-optical coefficient of barium titanate yields strong two-beam coupling. Here we describe a nonlinear photorefractive technique to reduce noise in a signal that is embedded in additive speckle noise. This approach implements an adaptive Wiener filter, which improves the contrast ratio by a factor of eight for a binary input signal with peaks equal to the noise peak. This technique relies on thresholding the Fourier transform of the noisy signal. The Fourier transform of the signal is a diffraction pattern of high intensity relative to the noise, and two-beam coupling is used to reduce the weaker-intensity noise Fourier transform. Our experimental results shows that it is possible to enhance features that are smaller than the grain size of the noise. The mechanism of enhancement depends on the initial signal-to-noise ratio and the specific geometry of the signal. We have also used the same technique for reducing multiplicative artifact noise and defects in images.

Abstract:
An optical 2×2 exchange-bypass switch that can be coupled with an optical perfect shuffle network is a critical element in building an optical multistage interconnection networks. We describe a design for optical exchange-bypass switch based on a modified Mach-Zender interferometer (MZI). The mirror in one arm is replaced by a patterned multi-level mirror that reverses the spatial ordering of adjacent channels. A multielement liquid crystal switch in conjunction with polarizing beam splitters and combiners determines which data-channel pairs will be sent along the exchange arm of the MZI. We describe the design and fabrication of the multilevel mirror and present experimental results for an eight-channel exchange-bypass switch.

Abstract:
Ternary phase-amplitude filters (TPAFs) are a discrete-valued correlation filters which may be viewed as an extension of binary phase-only filters (BPOFs) by adding a zero-modulation state. Modulation values of −1, 0, and 1 are encoded. The TPAF also has the potential for relatively simple real-time implementation but with much improved performance enabled by the additional modulation state, which allows blocking of some spatial frequencies. This paper reports simulation results demonstrating the design of TPAFs incorporating both in-class distortion invariance and out-of-class discrimination and compares the results with those obtained using other filter formulations.

Abstract:
The objective of this research, part of the FP5 REBASDO Programme, is to examine the effects of directional wave spreading on the nonlinear hydrodynamic loads and the wave run-up around the bow of a floating vessel (FPSO) in random seas. In this work, the non-linear wave scattering problem is solved by employing a quadratic boundary element method. An existing scheme (DIFFRACT developed in Oxford) has been extended to deal with uni-directional and directional bi-chromatic input wave systems, calculating second-order wave diffraction under regular waves and focused wave groups. The second order wave interaction with a floating vessel in a unidirectional focused wave group is presented in this paper. Comparison of numerical results and the experimental measurements conducted at Imperial College shows excellent agreement. The second-order free surface components at the bow of the ship are very significant, and cannot be neglected if one requires accurate prediction of the wave-structure interaction; otherwise a major underestimation of the wave impact on the structure could occur.

"FIBRINOPEPTIDE B RELEASE FROM NORMAL FIBRINOGEN AND FIBRINOGEN LONDON I IN THE PRESENCE OF INHIBITORS OF FIBRIN POLYMERIZATION." In XIth International Congress on Thrombosis and Haemostasis. Schattauer GmbH, 1987. http://dx.doi.org/10.1055/s-0038-1643341.

Full text
Abstract:
The fibrinopeptides A and B (FPA and FPB) are cleaved from the fibrinogen molecule with different rates. In the initial phase of the thrombin-fibrinogen reaction, FPB is released with a slow rate, which is enhanced upon polymerization of desA-fi-brin monomers. The aim of the present study was to further characterize the mechanism leading to the enhanced rate of FPB release during polymerization. For this purpose, the release of FPB from normal fibrinogen and from fibrinogen London I, which exhibits a polymerization defect located in the D-domain, was studied in the presence and absence of the fibrinolytic fragment D1 (D1) and of the synthetic tetrapeptide Gly-Pro-Arg-Pro (GPRP). Steady state parameters for fibrinopeptide release were determined under pseudo-first order reaction conditions. In the initial phase of the thrombin-fibrinogen reaction, the release of FPA was unchanged in the presence of D1. Furthermore, the release of FPA from fibrinogen London I did not reveal any difference in comparison to normal fibrinogen. GPRP prevented not only fibrin polymerization, but also the enhanced rate of FPB release. On the contrary, the rate of FPB release in the presence of a 16- and 32-fold molar excess of over fibrinogen did not differ from a reaction mixture with no added D1. Si-miliar to the inhibited rate of FPB release in the presence of GPRP, the release of FPB from fibrinogen London I occurred with a slow rate, which was not enhanced by the addition of a 16-fold molar excess of D1. Since the release neither from normal fibrinogen nor from ribrinogen London I was affected by D1, it was concluded that the D-E contact formed by D1 with an E-domain of a desA-fibrin molecule does not enhance the release of FPB. While GPRP keeps fibrin in monomeric form by inhibiting the polymerization sites in the D-domains, D1 does not prevent the formation of fibrin oligomers. Therefore, acceleration of FPB release is caused by a conformational change, which is induced by binding of reciprocal polymerization sites to an E-as well as a D-domain of the same desA-fibrin molecule.

Full text
Abstract:
This report, which summarizes the major study findings on population and family planning (FP) trends in the Philippines, was prepared for the Research Unit of the Family Planning Services (FPS) of the Department of Health (DOH). It was used by the FPS in its National Consultative Planning Workshop in early 1994 to formulate plans for the Philippine Family Planning Program for 1994–1995. Workshop participants included DOH Regional Family Planning Coordinators, representatives of local government offices engaged in population and health activities, and local NGOs and women's groups. The report alerted participants to population and FP issues and trends that could assist them in formulating their FP program targets and strategies in their own areas and localities. Study findings are organized into those relating to indicators of demand, and those bearing on the supply of FP services. Considering the large number of population and FP studies that have been made to date, this review limits itself to a presentation of related trends in fertility and FP awareness, approval, and use over time. The report provides a backdrop for the formulation and implementation of local action plans to advance the national FP program.
