Abstract:
This chapter describes how social enterprise founders and investors can use financial instruments to credibly signal their double-bottom-line commitments to each other. Its main example is a contingent convertible debt instrument that would constrain both investors and entrepreneurs from unilaterally abandoning social mission in favor of profit. The instrument’s low yield and long term would reassure entrepreneurs by screening in only investors willing to sacrifice profit for social mission for a considerable period. Conversion rights triggered on the sale of founders’ equity would allow investors to trust founders not to sell out. In an IPO or sale before the instrument’s maturity, founders would lose a significant share of any profit to debtholders unless these lenders agreed to its terms. Through this example and others, the chapter shows how social entrepreneurs and impact investors can craft sophisticated financial instruments to overcome the trust deficit that would otherwise keep them apart.

Abstract:
‘Forms, themes, and meanings’ considers what is meant by ‘pilgrimage’. Pilgrimage incorporates three main elements: travel and movement; veneration in some form; and a special place or places considered to have some deep significance, often associated with sacred figures or founders. Pilgrims are people who travel to and perform acts of meaningful significance, such as praying and performing rituals at and on the route to such special places. The journey can have both real and symbolic meanings. Pilgrimage can provide the setting for expressions of individual development and self-awareness along with a group-related sense of togetherness and belonging, while also providing potential for contest and conflict.

Abstract:
Borrowing Mikhail Bakhtin’s notion of the grotesque, this chapter explores how the use of remixed classical works contributes to the game Catherine’s pervasive focus on opposing dualities. The chapter describes in detail how, for example, music comments on the real world and horrific dreamworld experienced within the game by the main character, Vincent, who is in the midst of a major life crisis. It explores how the careful selection of musical works in Catherine, along with the irreconcilable combination of high and low arts, mirrors dualistic structures found throughout the game, from the mixing of unlikely gameplay genres to its narrative details.

Abstract:
The Ba’al Shem Tov is an elusive subject for historians because documentary evidence about his life is scanty and equivocal. Until now, much of what was known about him was based on stories compiled more than a generation after his death, many of which serve more to mythologize him than to describe him. The portrait that this book provides is drawn from life instead of from myth. The book goes further than any previous work in uncovering the historical Ba’al Shem Tov. Additionally, documents in Polish and Hebrew discovered by the author during research for the book enable a detailed description of the cultural, social, economic, and political context of the Besht’s life to be given. The book supplies the history behind the legend. It presents the most convincing description that can be drawn from the existing documentary evidence, changing our understanding of the Besht and with it the master-narrative of hasidism. A new introduction considers what has changed in the study of hasidism since the influential first edition was published. New approaches, new sources, and new interpretations have been introduced, and these are critically assessed. Criticisms of the original edition are answered and key issues reconsidered, including the authenticity of the various versions of the Holy Epistle; the ways in which Jacob Joseph of Polonne’s books can be utilized as historical sources; and the relationship to history of the stories about the Ba’al Shem Tov in the hagiographical collection Shivhei Ha-Besht.

Abstract:
What is the use of fiction? This question preoccupied writers in the early United States, where many cultural authorities insisted that fiction reading would mislead readers about reality. This book argues that this suspicion made early American writers especially attuned to one of fiction's defining but often overlooked features—its fictionality. The book shows how these writers explored the unique types of speculative knowledge that fiction could create as they sought to harness different varieties of fiction for a range of social and political projects. Spanning the years 1789 to 1861, the book challenges the “rise of novel” narrative that has long dominated the study of American fiction by highlighting how many of the texts that have often been considered the earliest American novels actually defined themselves in contrast to the novel. Their writers developed self-consciously extranovelistic varieties of fiction, as they attempted to reform political discourse, shape women's behavior, reconstruct a national past, and advance social criticism. The book features original discussions of a wide range of canonical and lesser-known writers, including Hugh Henry Brackenridge, Royall Tyler, Charles Brockden Brown, Leonora Sansay, Catharine Maria Sedgwick, Edgar Allan Poe, Robert Montgomery Bird, George Lippard, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Frederick Douglass, and Harriet Jacobs. By reframing the history of the novel in the United States as a history of competing varieties of fiction, the book shows how these fictions structured American thinking about issues ranging from national politics to gendered authority to the intimate violence of slavery.

Keats, Jonathon. Virtual Words. Oxford University Press, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195398540.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The technological realm provides an unusually active laboratory not only for new ideas and products but also for the remarkable linguistic innovations that accompany and describe them. How else would words like qubit (a unit of quantum information), crowdsourcing (outsourcing to the masses), or in vitro meat (chicken and beef grown in an industrial vat) enter our language? In Virtual Words: Language on the Edge of Science and Technology, Jonathon Keats, author of Wired Magazine's monthly Jargon Watch column, investigates the interplay between words and ideas in our fast-paced tech-driven use-it-or-lose-it society. In 28 illuminating short essays, Keats examines how such words get coined, what relationship they have to their subject matter, and why some, like blog, succeed while others, like flog, fail. Divided into broad categories--such as commentary, promotion, and slang, in addition to scientific and technological neologisms--chapters each consider one exemplary word, its definition, origin, context, and significance. Examples range from microbiome (the collective genome of all microbes hosted by the human body) and unparticle (a form of matter lacking definite mass) to gene foundry (a laboratory where artificial life forms are assembled) and singularity (a hypothetical future moment when technology transforms the whole universe into a sentient supercomputer). Together these words provide not only a survey of technological invention and its consequences, but also a fascinating glimpse of novel language as it comes into being. No one knows this emerging lexical terrain better than Jonathon Keats. In writing that is as inventive and engaging as the language it describes, Virtual Words offers endless delights for word-lovers, technophiles, and anyone intrigued by the essential human obsession with naming.
