Abstract:
Figures of mobility appear prominently in US-foundational narratives of ‘discovery,’ the ‘Puritan errand,’ and westward expansion; the protagonists of these hegemonic tales of settlement and nation-building are (mostly) European travellers, pioneers, and colonists. By contrast, figures such as pirates, drifters, and fugitives are for the most part absent from canonical narratives of new world beginnings and may be considered as expressing/representing alternative mobilities. Their stories and their representations raise questions of legitimacy and legality – often from a transnational perspective – and imply a critique of the American empire and its concomitant domestic discourses of marginalization. Yet, pirates, drifters, and fugitives also appear as ambiguous figures with regard to US-exceptionalist rhetoric: they may tap their subversive potential, while they are also bound to and complicit with the ideologies they seek to expose. In the context of the so-called New American Studies and the emergent field of Mobility Studies, this volume investigates these figures in a variety of cultural productions (pamphlets, song lyrics, autobiographies, novels, memorials, legal texts, video, television, and film) from the 17th century to the present.

Abstract:
In the textbook, in section I, the norms and standards of the official business style, genre templates, rules for preparing documents, and the basics of business ethics are set out in a simple, accessible form. It highlights aspects of business communication that, despite their importance, are not reflected in manuals on similar topics. This is information about the problems of adequate understanding of information, working with business terminology, and also gives an assessment of business jargon. Special attention is paid to the forms of information compression in the business text. The theoretical positions are illustrated by relevant examples from various areas of institutional communication. Section II offers a system of exercises for working with the voice as the main tool of business communication. This is the development of good diction and correct reading skills, exercises for mastering the basic rules of Russian orthoepy. Recommendations are given for preparing for a successful oral presentation. The features of phrase construction, the length of the phrase, contact-setting means, the rhetorical potential of the influencing speech, working with special vocabulary and digital information are considered. Meets the requirements of the federal state educational standards of higher education of the latest generation. For undergraduate students studying in management-related specialties.

Abstract:
Chapter 7 deals with one of the most traditional aspects of rhetoric, namely literature. It describes a basic law of literary rhetoric which accounts for the increasing problematicity of literary language in novels, poetry, and drama. This chapter also explains the evolution of literary criticism. The fact that literature is less and less linear in its narratives, and is increasingly enigmatic (Joyce or Kafka) is accounted for by the law of auto-contextualization of the problematic in the fictional answers. This law encourages the reader to provide the meaning of the text, even when it is considered as impossible or equivocal and pluralistic. The four main schools of literary interpretation correspond to our four basic operators of rhetoric: Mimetic for =, Hermeneutics for ±, Reception Theory for + (the reader is the “plus” of the interpretation of the text), and Deconstruction for –.

Porter, Stanley E. Linguistic Descriptions of the Greek New Testament. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9780567710031.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapters in this volume provide descriptions of various important topics – such as linguistic theory, metaphor, rhetoric, orality and textuality – in Greek linguistics from a Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) perspective. This approach has been foundational to Stanley E. Porter’s long and influential career in the field of New Testament Greek. Each chapter provides deep insights into Porter’s understanding of SFL, based upon how he positions it in relation to other linguistic models or how he utilizes it to describe topics within Greek and New Testament studies. The topics Porter covers in this volume include rhetoric, cognition, orality and textuality, as well as studies on linguistic schools of thought and on traditional grammar.

Abstract:
Rhetoric is the skill of persuasion. It has accompanied people for millennia, and the foundations of rhetorical theory were laid by the Ancient Greek thinker Aristotle. Through historical periods it has undergone development, rises and also falls. Today we are increasingly aware of the importance of familiarity with this skill in very broad fields of public and private life, for ultimately it contributes to better reading literacy of individuals and society. One of the aims of teaching rhetoric at the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Maribor is to prepare students to analyse and more accurately and precisely formulate arguments and persuasive techniques in everyday life, ranging from personal conversations to the media, study situations and the composition of expert texts. Equally it aims to familiarise students with various discourses, to teach them independent, more self-confident, clear, structured and critical expression of views and to formulate structured short and long texts. The booklet contains work sheets that will serve as support points in aiding rhetoric in business communication, when the focus is on topics such as history, rhetorical genres, canons, persuasion and language. We will also focus attention on the legal aspects of communication. The publication is a translated and supplemented edition of worksheets published in 2018.
