Abstract:
Abstract The present paper analyses language used in forums about journeys by train, in particular focusing on their thematic and linguistic-functional characteristics. The choice of this type of forum is due to the fact that travelers are more and more interested in travelling by train because of various factors such as economy, environmental protection and the desire for a comfortable means of transport. The paper focuses on the forum https://rail.cc/de/forum and it examines 100 German and 100 English postings, offering a contrastive analysis. The main questions of the investigation are as follows: 1) How are German and English postings structured according to their topics? 2) What kind of relationship exists between the language used and linguistic functions of the postings?

Abstract:
Derailments of freight cars occur for various reasons: breakdown of equipment or individual parts; maintenance deviations in the track superstructure; incorrect order of passing and making-up trains; violation of normal dynamic conditions, which occurs due to hunting and unfavorable traffic conditions on a curved track section. In order to avoid derailments and ensure a stability coefficient, the restrictions expressed using certain indicators are set. These indicators determine the conditions for lifting the wheel above the rail head, overturning the rail and widening the railway track. One of the most widely used restrictions is the restriction expressed in terms of the ratio of the lateral force acting on the wheel to the vertical force.Rolling stock derailment when the wheel flange is rolled onto the rail head, as a rule, is facilitated by longitudinal compressive forces. The presence of longitudinal forces in the train results in unloading the wheels moving along the outer rail line, and overloading the wheels moving along the inner rail line. The stability loss of freight cars as part of a train should be divided into two stages: stability loss of the body on suspension springs and the stability loss of the wheel set, which results directly in the derailment. The work is aimed to study the influence of longitudinal quasi-static compressive forces arising during stationary modes of train movement on the form of freight cars’ instability. The relevance of this study relates to the need to control the longitudinal forces arising during the train movement, taking into account the increase in speeds, masses and lengths of trains, especially freight trains, by in the locomotives power increase. The use of the above methodology will improve the stability of freight rolling stock, justify the cause of derailment, as well as develop and put into practice technical measures to prevent the lift of the carriages, widening and shear of the track.

Abstract:
L. F. Marsigli represented three archaeological structures on the map of Colonia Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, made in 1699 and published in 1726 – the city walls, the amphitheatre and a rectangular, double-walled building which encloses an empty space, and which has a square-shaped niche on one side (Pl. I/2). The map, compared in scale to the results of archaeological excavations and geophysical surveys shows an exact match with the currently known groundplan of the city wall, its northeastern corner and the amphitheatre. The third building may be identified as the centre of the provincial assembly (concilium provinciae)1 and the provincial imperial cult, namely the forum provinciae, that was situated within the territory of the Area sacra (Pl. I/1; Pl. II), approximately 20 metres to the northwest from the location given by Marsigli. The two textual fragments previously found in the area also support the assessment of the structure of forum provinciae. The dislocation of the third building on the map was presumably due to misprinting or Marsigli’s field error. Today, the area is still unexplored, only future archeological excavations can justify or refute the exact characteristics, structure and periodisation of the third building depicted on Marsigli’s map.

Abstract:
The paper reflects on the topic of learning outcomes in Higher Education. The emphasis on the education process and learning benefits students, faculty, and institution. The theme of learning outcomes in relation to instructional design and assessment becomes the subject of faculty development programs; a three-level training is hypothesized and discussed, starting with the IRIDI training program for faculties at the University of Turin. The first level is the exploration of learning outcomes’ topic, which can start from the syllabus development. The second level refers to the reinforcement of the use of learning outcomes in the didactic and assessment practices. The last level emphasizes the importance of providing faculty with specific training, with a collegial and institutional focus. This training model will be able to support and promote student-centered, inclusive, and quality teaching in Higher Education. Formare i docenti universitari a progettare e valutare secondo i learning outcomes: nuove sfide in Higher Education.

Abstract:
The maglev system is a technology that uses the repulsive force between magnets to float or levitate an object or vehicle. Maglev trains use electromagnets to counter the gravitational force of an object, so that the object can float in the air. With this technology, the resulting loss between the workpiece and the base can be eliminated. The technology used in this train is Electromagnetic Suspension (EMS). The research began by modeling the maglev system in the form of state space. Furthermore, the stability system model that has been built is analyzed. Finally, it is analyzed how the numerical simulation of an open loop without control is analyzed. The result of this research is that the floating system (maglev) is an unstable system if it is run in an open loop, so the maglev system requires sensors and controls in its operation.

Abstract:
In order to improve the safety of train traffic, we propose to introduce into practice a new type of rail circuits, fiber-optic rail circuits. Fiber optic cable is very sensitive to external shocks, vibration and deformation, which can play a crucial role in the detection of mechanical damage of rails and wheel sets and also to improve the positioning of the rolling stock. The branches of the fiber optic cable not only serve as a conductor of information, but also serve as a sensor, as they can perceive vibration. An OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) analyzes the backscattered light signal to determine the shape of the physical impact that caused the bending. From the time between the emission of the light signal and the receipt of the backscattered signal, the fault location is calculated. The authors offer the model of the system, which will check the security problems of the trains and the rail circuits. The software of the corresponding system is presented, using the simulation techniques. The authors present the pseudo code of the software. They also offer the testing environment for the software.

Between 11 March and 29 October 2004, between Madrid and Rome, the European Constitution has turned from an uncertain possibility into a certain (albeit not full) reality. The day of the Madrid train bombs killing 190 and wounding 1500 is as inseparable from the history of the Constitution as the date of its signature, 29 October. Those events of 11 March (and the ensuing government blunders) moved the Spanish people to end the reign of Aznar's Popular Party. This in turn unblocked the Constitution talks that had got gripped, among other things, due to Spanish intransigence in December. In several ways the particular sequence or succession of events from 11 March to 29 October can also be seen as symbolic for this particular European Constitution. Let us select three angles: an historic, a formal and a substantive one.

Abstract:
In pursuing fear-reduction strategies in public transport, the total experience of accessing rail stations should be taken into account. This article correlates passengers’ fear of crime at train stations with neighborhood types and income data within the pedestrian catchment area. The research is based on urban form and income around 84 S-train stations in the Copenhagen metropolitan area and nine years of passenger surveys on fear of crime at these stations. The study reveals a significant positive correlation between low income and fear of crime; the lower the income in an urban area, the more unsafe passengers feel at the station. However, when controlling for the relationship between income, safety and neighborhood type, stations in neighborhoods with urban form associated with low incomes have the lowest ratings of safety. The research indicates that train passengers’ sense of security is connected to neighborhood type and the city’s planning characteristics. This is an important finding for urban designers and planners working on the integration of public transport and station design in urban areas.

Abstract:
We review an extension of Hebbian learning which has been called ε-Insensitive Hebbian Learning (Fyfe and MacDonald, 2001) and derive lateral connections from a probability density function. We use these lateral connections to move outputs towards the mode of the pdf and use the resulting outputs to train the feedforward connections. We show that the resulting network is able to identify a single orientation of bars from a mixture of horizontal and vertical bars.

Abstract:
In this paper, the vector form intrinsic finite element (VFIFE) method is presented for analysis the train–bridge systems considering the coach-coupler effect. The bridge is discretized into a group of mass particles linked by massless beam elements and the multi-body coach with suspension systems is simulated as a set of mass particles connected by parallel spring-dashpot units. Then the equation of motion of each mass particle is solved individually and the internal forces induced by pure deformations in the massless beam elements are calculated by a fictitious reverse motion method, in which the structural stiffness matrices need not be updated or factorized. Though the vector-form equations resulting from the VFIFE method cannot be used to compute the structural frequencies by the eigenvalue approach, this study proposes a numerical free vibration test to identify the bridge frequencies for evaluating the bridge damping. Numerical verifications demonstrate that the present VFIFE method performs as accurately as previous numerical ones. The results show that the couplers play an energy-dissipating role in reducing the car bodies’ response due to the bridge-induced resonance, but not in their response due to the train-induced resonance because of the bridge’s intense vibration. Meanwhile, a dual-resonance phenomenon in the train–bridge system occurs when the coach-coupler effect is considered in the vehicle model.

Internet public opinion is an influential and tendentious opinion or speech expressed by the public on the Internet to a certain focus, which has formed a powerful force of public opinion. Internet public opinion has become a concentrated reflection of public opinion, opening up another channel to truly reflect public opinion, and effectively promoting the supervision of government officials and their decisions. In view of the strong emotional weakness of the current network public opinion, we can train forum opinion leaders to guide the public opinion with affinity and consideration, and select and enlarge the network public opinion by connecting the traditional media.

Abstract:
Abstract Almost every formal study of the serial installments of Victorian novels has emphasized their textual condition, linking the installment's formal aspects to the circumstances of its publication and the experience of its readers. This essay takes a different approach, arguing that many Victorian novels use their serial structure to express and shape their meanings in an architectural sense, irrespective of the experience of reading or the mediations of print culture. Considering the example of David Copperfield, the essay shows that the shape of the numbers has a significant bearing on issues central to the novel, including the failures of patriarchy, David's erotic development, the politics of homelessness, and the equivocal character of Daniel Peggotty's rescue efforts. Indeed, the numbers of Copperfield stage intricate formal operations that are not revealed, and are in some way obscured, by a focus on the book's number plans, its publication history, or the temporalities of serial reading. The essay therefore proposes that we approach the serial installment with the same double-vision we train on other narrative forms, viewing the numbers as both registering their textual condition and expressing a self-contained narrative logic.

In order to evaluate the product morphological design, a method of applying BP neural network to evaluate the product morphological design is proposed based on the analysis of the principle of artificial neural network. In such method, the advantages of the BP neural network with self-learning, self-organization, self-adaptation, and nonlinear dynamic processing are applied to effectively evaluate the product morphological design. Specifically, 13 product morphological design solutions of the automotive evaluation data set are selected as samples, 15 out of 18 solutions are used to train the evaluation system, and the remaining 3 solutions are used to validate the trained system. The validation results show that the relative errors between the simulated and actual values are 3.6%, −1.7%, and 2.8%, respectively. Such results also show high accuracy and simultaneously can reflect the effectiveness of our proposed system for evaluating the design solutions.

Abstract:
Understanding cities as complex systems, sustainable urban planning depends on reliable high-resolution data, for example of the building stock to upscale region-wide retrofit policies. For some cities and regions, these data exist in detailed 3D models based on real-world measurements. However, they are still expensive to build and maintain, a significant challenge, especially for small and medium-sized cities that are home to the majority of the European population. New methods are needed to estimate relevant building stock characteristics reliably and cost-effectively. Here, we present a machine learning based method for predicting building heights, which is based only on open-access geospatial data on urban form, such as building footprints and street networks. The method allows to predict building heights for regions where no dedicated 3D models exist currently. We train our model using building data from four European countries (France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Germany) and find that the morphology of the urban fabric surrounding a given building is highly predictive of the height of the building. A test on the German state of Brandenburg shows that our model predicts building heights with an average error well below the typical floor height (about 2.5 m), without having access to training data from Germany. Furthermore, we show that even a small amount of local height data obtained by citizens substantially improves the prediction accuracy. Our results illustrate the possibility of predicting missing data on urban infrastructure; they also underline the value of open government data and volunteered geographic information for scientific applications, such as contextual but scalable strategies to mitigate climate change.

Abstract:
SUMMARY In this paper, we report on an exact closed-form solution for the displacement in an elastic homogeneous half-space elicited by a downward vertical point source moving with constant velocity over the surface of the medium. The problem considered here is an extension to Lamb’s problem. Starting with the integral solutions of Bakker et al., we followed the method developed by Feng and Zhang, which focuses on the displacement triggered by a fixed point source observed on the free surface, to obtain the final solution in terms of elementary algebraic functions as well as elliptic integrals of the first, second and third kind. Our closed-form results agree perfectly with the numerical results of Bakker et al., which confirms the correctness of our formulae. The solution obtained in this paper may lay a solid foundation for further consideration of the response of an actual physical moving load, such as a high-speed rail train.

Abstract:
The Second Forum on the Future Role of the Human in the Forecast Process occurred on 2–3 August 2005 at the American Meteorological Society's Weather Analysis and Forecasting Conference in Washington, D.C. The forum consisted of three sessions. This paper discusses the second session, featuring three presentations on the cognitive and psychological aspects of expert weather forecasters. The first presentation discussed the learning gap between students (goal seekers) and teachers (knowledge seekers)—a similar gap exists between forecasters and researchers. In order to most effectively train students or forecasters, teachers must be able to teach across this gap using some methods described within. The second presentation discussed the heuristics involved in weather forecasting and decision making under time constraints and uncertainty. The final presentation classified the spectrum of forecasters from intuitive scientists to the disengaged. How information technology can best be adapted so as not to inhibit intuitive scientists from their mental modeling of weather scenarios is described. Forecasters must continuously refine their skills through education and training, and be aware of the heuristic contributions to the forecast process, to maintain expertise and have the best chance of ensuring a dynamic role in the future forecast process.
