Abstract:

"ANALYSIS OF SOUND SPEED IN LONGITUDINAL DIRECTION AT REFERENCE MOISTURE CONTENT (w = 12 %) IN SAWMILL ASSORTMENTS (FAGUS SYLVATICA, L.)." Akustika, VOLUME 37 (December 15, 2020): 45–50. http://dx.doi.org/10.36336/akustika20203745.

Abstract:
This paper explores the analysis of sound speeds in the longitudinal direction and their reduction to the reference moisture content w = 12 %. The sound speed cw was determined with Sylvatest Duo device. Moisture content of beech sawmill assortments (round timber: N = 16, logs: N = 2 × 16, structural boards: N = 54) in the range of 12 – 72 % was measured. For the analysis purposes, the sound speed was converted to reference conditions (c12, uref = 12%). A second-degree polynomial (parabola) with a regression equation of the form: c// = 5649 - 27,371 × w + 0.0735 × w2 was used to convert cw to c12, and correction of measured and calculated values was used as well. The sound speeds c12 in sawmill assortments (c12,round, c12,log, c12,board) were evaluated by linear dependences. Dependence was not confirmed for c12,round and c12,board1 (r = 0.168), in contrast for c12,round and c12,log2 the dependence is statistically very significant (r = 0.634). The results of testing showed that the most suitable procedure for predicting quality of structural timber is the first step round timber – log2, the second step: log2 - board2. More exact results of the construction boards were obtained from log2 than from log1. The sound speed is used in the calculation of dynamic modulus of elasticity (Edyn). EN 408 mentions the possibility of using dynamic modulus of elasticity as an alternative method in predicting the quality of structural timber.

Abstract:
Discussion boards are a form of social media which allow users to discuss topics and exchange information in a complex manner, in a number of different settings. As the popularity of such message boards has increased, communities of users have emerged, and several prominent types of social role have been identified, such as Question Answerer, Celebrity, Discussion Person and Topic Initiator. Recent studies have noted the structural similarity of the egocentric network of users assigned the same role by qualitative criteria. In this paper a methodology is developed with which to cluster together users with similar ego-centric network structures. This is achieved using a mixed membership formulation which allows for the fact that different groups of users may have characteristics in common. The method is then applied to data taken from boards.ie, a medium sized message boards website. Prominent clusters of users are identified and discussed, and illustrative examples of user behaviour provided. The type of interaction, both locally and globally, taking place within forums is examined.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between boards and board activity and subsequent business performance, in the context of high-growth companies, through the lens of decision making and business performance. Design/methodology/approach A critical realist approach was used to conduct a longitudinal multiple-case study of two medium-sized, quasi-public high-growth companies. Data collection included first-hand observations of boards in session, semi-structured interviews with key actors and the inspection of board and company documentation. An iterative approach to analysis was used to gain an in-depth understanding of how the boards worked and how they sought to exert influence. Findings The paper provides empirical insight about board involvement in strategic management. A proactive involvement by boards in the strategy development process and assessment of strategic options, and a collaborative form of board involvement in strategic management together with management is indicated as being important if the board is to exert influence beyond the boardroom. A conceptual model of a collaborative form of board-management interaction is developed. Practical implications The paper provides guidance for boards, suggesting that a more direct level of involvement in strategic management by the board together with management may be material to improved business performance. Originality/value The paper responds to calls for more research on the relationship between boards and business performance. It contributes much-needed first-hand evidence from within the boardroom.

Abstract:
Currently, the use of board materials as a material intended for the dry construction of building structure cladding in the building industry has become widespread. The most common types of board materials include wood-based boards (particle, fibre, laminated / plywood, oriented strand boards [OSB]), cement-bonded particleboards and gypsum plasterboards or gypsum fibre boards. In the case of board materials based on inorganic binders, these are most often represented by boards in which the fillers used are bonded by plaster or cement. Wood can then be used as filler, which is predominantly an assortment of inferior-quality trees or comes from a short rotation coppice, treated by various technological processes. Microstructure and material composition have the greatest influence on the physical and mechanical properties of the boards. The use of the boards in the internal or external environment is determined by their individual properties. Another indicator for the possible use of boards is the form of moisture with which the board comes into contact after installation into the structure. For the external environment, the boards have to withstand mainly liquid moisture; in contrast, in an internal environment, the boards come into contact mainly with air humidity. The diffusion properties of the individual products are also crucial for the overall design and use of the boards for structure cladding.

Abstract Several marble slabs fashioned like game boards for XII scripta/Alea come from Christian catacombs in Rome. Often deliberately cut or fragmented, they were used as funeral slabs. The general opinion is that these game boards have found a secondary use in the funeral context. The present paper presents a critical discussion of this interpretation. The slabs differ in several details from real game boards. Moreover, the inscriptions often betray a distinctive funeral character. Game boards for this game consist of three rows of two groups of six squares, their structure thus being identical to the poetic form of a hexagram. It appears that in Late Antiquity, the hexagram was particularly popular as a formula for funerary inscriptions. Moreover, the symbolic meaning of the XII scripta/Alea game favoured its use in sepulchral contexts. It seems therefore that at least a certain number, if not most of these “game” boards, were produced as funeral slabs and never used before as game boards in the home of the living.

Abstract:
This study examined the effects of selected types of thermoplastics on the physical and mechanical properties of polymer-triticale boards. The investigated thermoplastics differed in their type (polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS)), form (granulate, agglomerate) and origin (native, recycled). The resulting five-ply boards contained layers made from different materials (straw or pine wood) and featured different moisture contents (2%, 25%, and 7% for the face, middle, and core layers, respectively). Thermoplastics were added only to two external layers, where they substituted 30% of straw particles. This study demonstrated that, irrespective of their type, thermoplastics added to the face layers most favorably reduced the hydrophobic properties of the boards, i.e., thickness, swelling, and V100, by nearly 20%. The bending strength and modulus of elasticity were about 10% lower in the experimental boards than in the reference ones, but still within the limits set out in standard for P7 boards (20 N/mm2 according to EN 312).

PurposeThis paper examines the relationship between women on boards and board monitoring tasks depending on group categories identified in the Kanter's theory.Design/methodology/approachUsing a sample of the largest listed companies in Spain, Italy and France during the period 2007–2017, this study tests the effect of women's presence based on the following board categories: (1) skewed boards with a percentage of women that is less than 20%; (2) tilted boards with a percentage of women that ranges from 20% to 33%; (3) tilted boards with a percentage of women that is more than 33%; and (4) balanced boards with an equal or quasi-equal gender distribution. The authors use the case of the gender board quota regulation in different European Union countries.FindingsThe results suggest that tilted boards engage in stronger firm monitoring and that the effect of women on board monitoring tasks is positive and statistically significant when the percentage of female directors reaches the threshold of 33%.Practical implicationsThe outcomes of this study help policymakers identify the minimum threshold that quota regulations should mandate in order for boards to be effective.Originality/valueThis paper moves forward the ongoing debate about the effect of women on corporate boards, shifting the focus from the ratio or presence of female directors to the size of the group they form within the board. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to test Kanter's theory by investigating the relationship between women on boards and board monitoring.

Abstract:
This paper proposed an innovative method based on the semantic differential of Kansei Engineering and the correlation analysis of machine learning in the case of small-size samples, which could achieve the evaluation of users’ subjective feelings to form factors of modeling language and color schemes in the process of product design. It used grey relational analysis and the entropy method to analyze and study the design of modeling and color of guide signs in a public space, and converted the subjective assessment process of designer and user in art design into numeric operation that quantifies and treats data. This research faced two problems: one was to analyze the form correlation between the modeling and color of designed guide signs and the architecture and environment of a public space where the signs are placed, and the other was to convert the subjective assessment of designed guide signs into objective quantified data. The paper took vertical guide boards in a guide sign system as a research object, analyzed and resolved it according to the primitive type of form factors of modeling language, and converted them into numbered sequences of the form factor type. Then, guide boards using different color schemes were utilized to conduct group tests on users; the uniformity of guide boards and architectural style was evaluated through a semantic differential method of Kansei engineering; the test data was analyzed and treated using the grey relational degree, Pearson correlation coefficient and the entropy method; the user’s qualitative assessment on the correlation degree of the modeling form and architectural style of guide boards using different color schemes was converted into quantitative numerical parameters; and finally, we obtained the assessment results of the correlation degree and significance of integrated color and modeling language form factors. Specific to the users’ assessment discrepancies on the style design of guide signs using different colors, this paper proposed a color scheme evaluation approach with uniform color space based on the grey correlation degree, used Pearson correlation coefficient to make a numerical analysis on users’ subjective assessment, presented a modified entropy method based on standardization, and made a comprehensive assessment on the uniformity of style design in different colors and architectural style. Thus, the numerical analysis results of the uniformity between the guide signs in different color schemes and modeling forms and the architectural style of public spaces were obtained. This research method can provide a new research means and numerical computation method to the study of color and form correlation in product design and style design. Meanwhile, it also provides a theoretical foundation and application method for artistic design by virtue of high-performance computing platforms.

The issue of sweated labour formed one of the most intractable social problems of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Numerous remedies to solve sweating, such as the restriction of female and child labour, the abolition of domestic workshops, consumers' leagues, and co-operative production were variously advanced but subsequently found to be wanting. Eventually, and bowing to the inevitable, Edwardians finally sanctioned one cautious measure which they thought would curb sweating at its root – that is the legal control of low pay in the form of the 1909 Trade Boards Act. Initially, the act applied to domestic chain-making, ready-made and wholesale bespoke tailoring, paper-box making, and the machine-made lace and finishing trade. In these four industries in which wages were deemed unduly low, boards were established consisting of equal numbers of employers' and workers' representatives, plus independent members nominated by the state. In effect, the boards were thus a form of compulsory arbitration on pay.

Abstract:
In Poland, informal forest education is carried out mostly on forest educational paths, equipped with educational boards. Due to the diverse audience, an attempt was made to assess the elements supporting forest education from the perspective of forest users. The aim of the study is to determine the basic criteria that, in the opinion of path users, determine the use, attractiveness, and importance of educational boards in education. In an anonymous questionnaire, 504 people participated during meetings with an educator on paths in forests of the Regional Directorate of the State Forests in Lublin. In the opinion of trail users, boards are not an important element that should be present on educational trails; in their opinion, they moderately support informal forest education activities. Users generally paid attention to between one to two or three to four boards. The attractiveness of the boards is determined by the graphics of the whole board. Respondents would also prefer boards on which information is presented in graphical rather than text form. Our study indicates a somewhat negative perception of educational boards in forest education, which has prompted the authors to conduct further research in order to clarify forest users’ perceptions of the issues analyzed.

Abstract:
Purpose The issue of gender diversity on hospital boards plays a significant role in the financial health and clinical performance of hospitals. The purpose of this paper is to examine the determinants of gender diversity of hospital boards in Ghana. Specifically, this study examined the proportion of females on hospital boards and considered how hospital-level characteristics such as hospital size, age, location and ownership structure explain the board gender diversity of hospital boards in Ghana. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative approach based on 100 hospitals was used. Findings The results of the study indicate that women are represented on all hospitals with governing boards but with different proportions depending on ownership form. In all, women represent less than half of board membership. Smaller and older hospitals were found to have more female representation on their board. Also, not-for-profit mission and for-profit private hospitals tend to engage more females than their counterpart public hospitals. Research limitations/implications The study examined female representation on hospital boards depending on only hospital-level characteristics such as hospital size, age, location and ownership. Other factors could be determining the appointment of females on hospital boards other than hospital characteristics. Social implications Efforts on improving the role of women on hospital boards need to be encouraged. Originality/value Evidence from this study clearly suggests underrepresentation of women in the top echelons of hospitals owned by government or the state, bigger and newer hospitals.

Abstract:
The research of subjects and forms of public participation in the activities of the penal system of Russia has recently received considerable attention. The article studies the formation and development of the institution of guardianship as a form of interaction and public control over the activities of penal institutions. For two centuries with some interruptions guardianship was not only present in the system of execution of criminal sentences, contributed to the achievement of state objectives, but also exercised control functions. The study allows us to assess the significance and effectiveness of the activities of the boards of guardians over the entire period of its existence. Currently there is a significant decrease in the level of this type of interaction, and in some institutions its complete absence. The current level of organization and authority does not allow the the guardianship to develop. This is confirmed by the analysis of the regulatory legal acts regulating the activities of the boards of guardians in the institutions of the penal system, the data of the survey of employees in the institutions.

Abstract:
The criteria for the efficiency definition of visir optic appliances for observation on the boards of spaceships are related to: the eye characteristics – the pupil diameter in dependence of the back-ground brightness, the visual sharpness and the utmost contrast; the photometric characteristics of the observed object and the background – their brightness and contrast; the optic characteristics of the visir optic appliance – magnification, vision field, entrance pupil diameter, light permeability, etc. Because the above mentioned class of appliances for cosmic research is used to observe distant ob-jects, when evaluating their efficiency, it is important to render an account of the atmospheric conditions. The visual distance of the distant objects depends on the photometric characteristics, on the object size and its shape. The presented in this research criteria for efficiency of the visir optic appliances used for observation on the boards of spaceships and also the coefficient which counts for the atmospheric influence allow evaluating the object visibility in the conditions of a natural landscape.

Abstract:
In this paper, the main influence factors of stress-concentrated coefficient Kt of cross shaped board-welded hollow spherical joints were analyzed by ANSYS. Through the combination of 17 specifications of welded hollow spheres and 40 specifications of cross shaped boards to form 122 kinds of cross shaped board–welded hollow spherical Joints, the paper mainly analyzed the influence on stress-concentrated coefficient Kt from some factors as follows: the length of the connection of the cross shaped boards (a)、the thickness of the cross shaped boards (t) , the outside diameter of the welded-hollow spheres (D) , the thickness of the spheres (δ), the weld size (hf) and the cross shaped boards which are cut or not. The analysis results showed: the SCF of the joints and some factors(a、t、D、δand hf) in all .A cross shaped board to cut its corner or not affected the stress distribution of the joints and the biggest difference between 12%; In the cross shaped boards connected the same length, when it rises to some degree, the influence of (δ) on ( Kt) is smaller; Along with the thickness of the large diameter welded hollow spheres increases, the slope of the stress-concentrated coefficient Kt increases; It is better to choose the hollow spheres with the small diameter or thick wall, and choose the cross shaped boards which shall be a little thinner, and also increase the connected length between the welded hollow spheres and the cross shaped boards; When the weld size is larger than or equal to 12 millimeters, SCF gently changes.

Abstract:
This paper presents the design of a planar, low-profile, high-gain, substrate-integrated Fabry-Pérot cavity antenna forK-band applications. The antenna consists of a frequency selective surface (FSS) and a planar feeding structure, which are both lithographically patterned on a high-permittivity substrate. The FSS is made of a circular hole array that acts as a partially reflecting mirror. The planar feeding structure is a wideband leaky-wave slit dipole fed by a coplanar waveguide whose ground plane acts as a perfect reflective mirror. The measured results show that the proposed antenna has an impedance bandwidth of more than 8% (VSWR ≤ 2), a maximum gain of 13.1 dBi, and a 3 dB gain bandwidth of approximately 1.3% at a resonance frequency of around 21.6 GHz. The proposed antenna features low-profile, easy integration into circuit boards, mechanical robustness, and excellent cost-effective mass production suitability.

Abstract:
When fire occurs in a concrete structure, it is hard to extinguish it because of its unique form and location, which results in a very high internal temperature of the maximum 1400°C. Due to the fine structural characteristic of concrete, the structure is likely to suffer fatal damages such as the reduction of resisting force and the damages to the cross section caused by explosive fracture. In this research, the author tested the effect of fire on structures by using fire boards with perlite-added silicone and confirmed that the fire resisting capacity varies according to the weight ratio of the addition agent, which shows what effect perlite has for the pyrolysis process. A fire resisting capacity test was also carried out by attaching a silicone composite fire board to a real size specimen. As a result of the test carried out by installing the fire boards with different thickness by section, most fire boards had excellent fire resisting capacity, and fire boards with 20mm or more thickness had also excellent fire resisting capacity

Abstract:
Currently, it is increasingly difficult to obtain large and quality sawn timber due to the diminishing supply of wood in natural forests. To overcome this problem, innovation is needed to utilize wood scrap waste as a board product. One form of innovation in the use of wood scrap as a board product is laminated boards. In this study, Sengon and Bayur woods were used which had strong grades III-IV and had specific gravity ranging from 0.29-0.70. Bayur and Sengon wood are suitable to be used as raw materials for laminated boards because they have a light density. The purpose of this research was to determine the physical and mechanical characteristics of laminated boards, the effect of Labur weight, wood species and their interactions. The method used in this study is an experimental method with a factorial completely randomized design (CRD). Characteristics of physical and mechanical properties of laminated boards of Sengon and clothes: density 0.412 gram/cm3; water content 12,459%; thick development 2.019%; thick shrinkage 3.183%; MoE 23031,922 kgf/cm²; MoR 357.208 kgf/cm². Laur weight, type of wood and their interactions have a significant effect on all physical and mechanical properties of Sengon and Bayur laminated boards. The interaction of pumpkin weight and wood species had no significant effect on the water content and MoR tests. Based on the wood strength class, Sengon and Bayur wood laminated boards are classified as class III which can be used as protected heavy construction materials.

Abstract:
Three fast-growing wood species in Romania, namely birch, willow, and poplar, were considered in this work. These species may have potential to replace softwoods or mixtures of wood species frequently used in the production of oriented strand boards (OSB). This study evaluated some physico-mechanical properties of these wood species that influence the performance of OSB boards made using 100% of strands from each individual species. Wood strands were cut, dried, screened, and sorted in order to form the core and surface layers of OSB boards. They were blended with a polymeric diphenyl methane diisocyanate adhesive (pMDI) and compressed with the help of a hydraulic press. The mechanical tests were performed under standard laboratory conditions. The obtained OSB boards made of each of the wood species met the EN standard of minimum requirements for OSB/2 properties, except the MOE of poplar-OSB, while its MOR was higher than that obtained for OSB made of birch even for small differences in board density. The birch-OSB presented superior elastic properties. Results of this experimental work can have industrial applications for an efficient use of low-grade raw material.

Abstract:
Corporate elites have been all-male bastions until the twenty-first century. The recent inclusion of women in the corporate elite needs explanation because it is an abrupt change in recruitment practices. We consider female presence in corporate boards as a sign of the democratization of elite social networks. Building on a case study of the Netherlands that covers the last four decades, we show that the corporate elite has become more open to nonmembers of traditional elites. In the process, women have also entered the boardroom. Initially, these were predominantly female politicians, but more recently many large corporations have recruited foreign females. We argue that the incremental feminization of the corporate elite was in the beginning—that is in the 1970s—initiated by the state but was subsequently pushed forward by the internationalization of corporate governance. We have traced the professional background of all female board members of the largest firms in the Netherlands over the period 1969–2011. We show that the female board members do not form a homogeneous group. The first wave of female directors had a political background, the second wave had an academic background, whereas the third wave was recruited from within the corporations. In this third wave, foreign female directors became predominant. Elites open up their ranks and privileged positions to women, but they do so reluctantly and under outside pressure.
