Amha, Azeb. Commands in Wolaitta. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198803225.003.0014.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines expressions of commands (imperatives) in Wolaitta and the ways in which the imperative is distinguished from statements and questions. Although each sentence type is formally distinct, imperatives and questions share a number of morpho-syntactic properties. Similar to declarative and interrogative sentences, imperatives in Wolaitta involve verbal grammatical categories such as the distinction of person, number, and gender of the subject as well as negative and positive polarity. In contrast to previous studies, the present contribution establishes the function of a set of morphemes based on -árk and -érk to be the expression of plea or appeal to an addressee rather than politeness when issuing a command. Instead, politeness in commands is expressed by using plural (pro)nominal and verbal elements. The imperative in Wolaitta is a robust construction which is also used in formulaic speeches such as leave-taking as well as in blessing, curses, and advice.

Fendel, Victoria Beatrix Maria. Coptic Interference in the Syntax of Greek Letters from Egypt. Oxford University PressOxford, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192869173.001.0001.

Abstract:
Abstract Egypt in the early Byzantine period was a bilingual country where Greek and Egyptian (Coptic) were used alongside each other. Historical studies along with linguistic studies of the phonology and lexicon of early Byzantine Greek in Egypt testify to this situation. In order to describe the linguistic traces the language-contact situation left behind in individuals’ linguistic output, this study analyses the syntax of early Byzantine Greek texts from Egypt. The primary object of interest is bilingual interference in the syntax of verbs, adverbial phrases, and clause linkage as well as in semi-formulaic expressions and formulaic frames. The study is based on a corpus of Greek and Coptic private letters on papyrus, which date from the fourth to mid-seventh centuries, originate from Egypt, and belong to bilingual, Greek-Coptic, papyrus archives. The study shows that deviations from the standard pattern fall into three categories, i.e. bilingual interference, SLA-related errors, and internal confusion of patterns. There is a marked difference as to the extent to which deviations, and interferences in particular, affect syntactic domains. The degree of complexity of the syntactic structure in question as well as the degree of divergence from the corresponding Coptic structure seem to play a role. There is also a marked difference as to the extent to which deviations affect different types of contexts (i.e. free, semi-formulaic, and formulaic contexts). The degree to which constraints are imposed on structures in each type of context seems to play a role. Finally, it appears that the way writers assimilated patterns can explain a large number of deviations. Interferences account proportionately for fewest deviations vis-à-vis SLA-related errors and the internal confusion of patterns.

Eisenberg, Melvin A. Formulas for Measuring Expectation Damages for Breach of a Contract to Provide Services. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199731404.003.0015.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 15 concerns formulas for measuring expectation damages for contracts to provide services, including breaches by both service-purchasers and service-providers. In case of breach by service-purchasers one formula is based on the service-provider’s lost profit. Under an alternative formula the service-provider is entitled to the contract price minus the out-of-pocket costs remaining to be incurred by the service-provider at the time of breach. Although these two expressions look very different they are algebraically equivalent and yield the same amount of damages. In case of breach by the service-provider the core formulas for measuring damage to the service-purchaser involve either cost-of-completion or diminished-value damages.

Kells, Stuart. Australian pulps 1939–1959: You go high, we go low. La Trobe eBureau, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.26826/1012.

Full text
Abstract:
Popular during the middle parts of the 20th century, pulp fiction novels and comics were produced in massive quantities by Australian publishers. Most were written by hacks and enthusiastic amateurs willing to sign contracts that demanded an incredibly high output of work. Pulp publications were cheaply made, formulaic and designed to be read quickly and then thrown away. Often noted for their lurid cover art and titillating titles, they satisfied an appetite for fast entertainment in the era before television. This book explores the pulp publishing scene in Australia from 1939 to 1959. It examines the circumstances that gave rise to this field of ‘low literature’; the major participants in it – publishers, authors and artists – and the different expressions of the pulp genre available to readers, including crime pulps, westerns, sci-fi, romance and ‘weird tales’. The book is vividly illustrated with covers from the author’s own collection of Australian pulp novelettes. It provides an introduction to an under-regarded and little known sphere of Australian publishing. It is a valuable record of the mostly overlooked Australian writers involved, and the distinctive conditions under which these cultural products were produced.

Kutcher, Norman. The Skein of Chinese Emotions History. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252038051.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter draws out some common threads from the history of emotions in Chinese literature. The first of these threads is orthodoxy. Specific Chinese traditions—and here Confucianism is the case in point—dictated the rules of proper behavior: these rules were considered to regulate even the emotions. The second thread is context. Whether, or how, an emotion was expressed was a product of the venue (textual or otherwise) in which it was to be described or expressed. The third thread is the role of the formula (or, the formulaic) in emotion and its expression, or how we understand professions and descriptions of emotion that are expressed via stock phrases.

Pye, Michael, ed. Beyond Meditation: Expressions of Japanese Shin Buddhist Spirituality. Equinox Publishing, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1558/isbn.9781845539184.

Full text
Abstract:
In the wide range of Buddhist meditation and spirituality a very special place is held by the practice of calling on the name of Amitabha, or in Japanese Amida Buddha, using the simplest of formulas, the nenbutsu. Japanese masters such as Honen, Shinran and others made this the core of a profound spiritual experience which has fascinated numberless followers ever since. The deeper meaning of the nenbutsu has therefore become a major topic in Buddhist thought which has been reflected on by various thinkers and teachers to this day, especially in the context of Shin Buddhism. In this book, which draws on classic articles first published in The Eastern Buddhist, major historic proponents and masters of the nenbutsu are introduced, in particular Shinran, Shoku, Ippen and Rennyo. Further contributions, which set the work of these masters into the wider context of Buddhist tradition, are in fact some of the earliest Buddhist “voices” to emerge from modern Japan into global view. Yet the presentations of writers such as Sasaki Gessho, Yamabe Shugaku and Sugihira Shizutoshi have a freshness and an immediacy which speaks to us today.

Caso, Antonio. Existence as Economy and as Charity. Translated by Alexander V. Stehn and Jose G. Rodriguez. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190601294.003.0003.

Abstract:
Antonio Caso rejects the effort of biologists to reduce life to the organic world, a sphere of existence that is defined by economy and egoism, best summarized in the formula: Life = Minimum Effort x Maximum Gain. The problem is that this cannot explain what he calls “disinterested activity,” such as play, art, and self-sacrifice. His primary example of disinterested or selfless activity is the life of Jesus, which Caso also believes is the height of human dignity. In other words, Caso not only argues that there is more than one order of life or existence; he also argues that selfless activity is ultimately what distinguishes human life, whose best expression is found in the essence of Christianity: to give oneself to others “without fear of exhaustion.” To be human is to be willing to sacrifice oneself, best expressed in the following formula: Sacrifice = Maximum Effort x Minimum Gain.

Howard, Richard F. Acute pain in children. Oxford University Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199234721.003.0010.

Full text
Abstract:
Age and maturity affect the perception and expression of pain in children. A variety of pain assessment tools are needed to cover different age groups. The British National Formulary for Children is a source of correct formulations and doses of analgesics for children of different ages. Neonates show very high interindividual response to analgesic drugs. Between 2yrs and 12yrs, the clearance of drugs exceeds that of adults and relatively higher doses may be needed. Patient-controlled, nurse-controlled, and neuraxial analgesia can all be used in infants and children. Reducing procedural pain in children is important and requires a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods.

Potočnik Topler, Jasna. Rhetoric for Tourism Business: Worksheets. University of Maribor Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18690/978-961-286-526-9.

Full text
Abstract:
Rhetoric is the skill of persuasion. It has accompanied people for millennia, and the foundations of rhetorical theory were laid by the Ancient Greek thinker Aristotle. Through historical periods it has undergone development, rises and also falls. Today we are increasingly aware of the importance of familiarity with this skill in very broad fields of public and private life, for ultimately it contributes to better reading literacy of individuals and society. One of the aims of teaching rhetoric at the Faculty of Tourism of the University of Maribor is to prepare students to analyse and more accurately and precisely formulate arguments and persuasive techniques in everyday life, ranging from personal conversations to the media, study situations and the composition of expert texts. Equally it aims to familiarise students with various discourses, to teach them independent, more self-confident, clear, structured and critical expression of views and to formulate structured short and long texts. The booklet contains work sheets that will serve as support points in aiding rhetoric in business communication, when the focus is on topics such as history, rhetorical genres, canons, persuasion and language. We will also focus attention on the legal aspects of communication. The publication is a translated and supplemented edition of worksheets published in 2018.

Doganova, Liliana. Discounting and the Making of the Future. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198820802.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
Discounting future revenues and costs is the main tool used to assess investments. This chapter develops a sociological analysis of discounting by examining how, and with what effects, economic actors discount the future in order to make statements about the value of investments and determine relevant courses of action. The argument that discounting is an instrument of valuation that forms uncertain futures is developed through two case studies: forest management in the middle of the nineteenth century, and drug development today. Rather than as an inherent characteristic of the future, uncertainty is analysed as the result of valuing investments through this particular instrument. The chapter identifies three distinct expressions of uncertainty in the formulas and practices of discounting—uncertainty as measurable risk, uncertainty as a concern for investors, and uncertainty as the multiplicity of explored possibilities—and it discusses the different forms of uncertain future they entail.

Breitenwischer, Dustin, Hanna-Myriam Häger, and Julian Menninger, eds. Faktuales und fiktionales Erzählen II. Ergon Verlag, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5771/9783956505126.

Full text
Abstract:
This volume deals with historically specific forms of factual and fictional narration within literature and various non-literary media. The contributions address the question of how and why the respective medium, the historical context, socio-cultural norms, and aesthetic conventions can (or cannot) formulate certain claims to factuality or fictionality within a given narrative. More specifically, the collected essays clarify that the validity claims of a text are equally tied to its historical framework, its particular medium, and its respective narrative practice. The discussion, analysis, and comparison of historical peculiarities on the one hand and an extended media arsenal on the other thus enables the contributors to uncover and describe narrative-specific characteristics of factual and fictional narration in their diverse forms of expression. In line with the disciplinary diversity of its contributors, the volume is aimed both at media-scientifically oriented narratologists and literary scholars as well as social scientist and scholars in the humanities who are invested in the interdisciplinarity of narrative theory.

Daley, SJ, Brian E. God Visible. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199281336.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book considers the early development and reception of what is today the most widely professed Christian conception of Christ. The development of this doctrine admits of wide variations in expression and understanding, varying emphases in interpretation that are as striking in authors of the first millennium as they are among modern writers. The seven early ecumenical councils and their dogmatic formulations are crucial way stations in defining the shape of this study. It argues that the scope of previous enquiries, which focused on the declaration of the Council of Chalcedon in AD 451 that Christ was one Person in two natures, the Divine of the same substance as the Father, and the human of the same substance as us, now seems excessively narrow and distorts our understanding. Daley sets aside the Chalcedonian formula and instead considers what some major Church Fathers—from Irenaeus to John Damascene—say about the person of Christ.

Mac Carthy, Ita. The Grace of the Italian Renaissance. Princeton University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.23943/princeton/9780691175485.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
‘Grace’ emerges as a keyword in the culture and society of sixteenth-century Italy. This book explores how it conveys and connects the most pressing ethical, social and aesthetic concerns of an age concerned with the reactivation of ancient ideas in a changing world. The book reassesses artists such as Francesco del Cossa, Raphael, and Michelangelo and explores anew writers like Castiglione, Ariosto, Tullia d'Aragona, and Vittoria Colonna. It shows how these artists and writers put grace at the heart of their work. The book argues that grace came to be as contested as it was prized across a range of Renaissance Italian contexts. It characterised emerging styles in literature and the visual arts, shaped ideas about how best to behave at court and sparked controversy about social harmony and human salvation. For all these reasons, grace abounded in the Italian Renaissance, yet it remained hard to define. The book explores what grace meant to theologians, artists, writers, and philosophers, showing how it influenced their thinking about themselves, each other and the world. It portrays grace not as a stable formula of expression but as a web of interventions in culture and society.

Tennant, Neil. The Logic of Number. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780192846679.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book defines and develops the program of Natural Logicism for the natural, rational, and real numbers. The central method is to formulate rules of natural deduction governing variable-binding number-abstraction operators and other logico-mathematical expressions such as zero and successor. The introduction and elimination rules for a number-abstraction operator @ allow one to infer to, and away from, identity statements in the canonical form ‘t=@xΦ‎(x)’. These enable ‘single-barreled’ abstraction, in contrast with the ‘double-barreled’ abstraction effected by principles such as Frege's Basic Law V, or Hume's Principle. The logical system used for the foundational reasoning is free Core Logic. It handles non-denoting singular terms and allows only constructive and relevant reasoning. Natural Logicism imposes upon its account of the numbers four conditions of adequacy. First, one must show how it is that the various kinds of number are applicable in our wider thought and talk about the world. One does this by deriving all instances of three respective schemas: Schema N for the naturals, Schema Q for the rationals, and Schema R for the reals. These provide truth-conditions for statements deploying terms referring to numbers of the kind in question. Second, one must show how it is that the naturals sit among the rationals as themselves again, and the rationals likewise among the reals. Third, one should reveal enough of the metaphysical nature of the numbers to be able to derive the mathematician's basic laws governing them. Fourth, one should be able to demonstrate that there are uncountably many reals.

Cullity, Garrett. Concern, Respect, and Cooperation. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198807841.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Three things often recognized as central to morality are concern for others’ welfare, respect for their self-expression, and cooperation in worthwhile collective activity. When philosophers have proposed theories of the substance of morality, they have typically looked to one of these three sources to provide a single, fundamental principle of morality—or they have tried to formulate a master-principle for morality that combines these three ideas in some way. This book views them instead as three independently important foundations of morality. It sets out a plural-foundation moral theory with affinities to that of W. D. Ross. There are major differences: the account of the foundations of morality differs from Ross’s, and there is a more elaborate explanation of how the rest of morality derives from them. However, the overall aim is similar. This is to illuminate the structure of morality by showing how its complex content is generated from a relatively simple set of underlying elements—the complexity results from the various ways in which one part of morality can derive from another, and the various ways in which the derived parts of morality can interact. Plural-foundation moral theories are sometimes criticized for having nothing helpful to say about cases in which their fundamental norms conflict. Responding to this, the book concludes with three detailed applications of the theory: to the questions surrounding paternalism, the use of others as means, and our moral responsibilities as consumers.
