http://dx.doi.org/10.17014/ijog.vol2no1.20074Three maars are well identifi ed in the Muria Peninsula, i.e. Bambang Maar, Gunungrowo Maar, and Gembong Maar. The maars were formed by monogenetic volcanic eruptions due to the interaction between heat source (magma), groundwater and calcareous basement rocks. This interaction is able to produce very high pressure of gas and steam causing phreatic explosions, followed by phreatomagmatic- or even magmatic explosions and ended by a lava extrusion. Satellite image analyses have recognized twelve circular features, comprising Bambang Maar, Gunungrowo Maar, and Gembaong Maar. Phisiographically, these maars are characterized by circular depressions which are surrounded by hills that are gently sloping down away from the crater or having a radier pattern morphology. Outcrops and drilling core in the circular areas that are considered as volcanic maars are lava fl ows, pyroclastic breccias, lapillistones, and tuffs, located far away from the eruption centres of Muria and Genuk Volcanoes. One of the circular features, i.e. Jepara Circular Feature, is also supported by negative anomaly (<30 mgal) showing a circular pattern. In the future, a maar volcano could possibly erupt depending on the tectonic reactivity in the region.

Abstract:
Let Δ denote the Laplace operator acting on the space L2(Г/H) of automorphic functions with respect to a congruence group Г, square integrable over the fundamental domain F=Г/H. It is known that Δ has a point spectrumwith (Weyl's law)and it has a purely continuous spectrum on [¼,∞) of finite multiplicity equal to the number of inequivalent cusps. The eigenpacket of the continuous spectrum is formed by the Eisenstein series Ea(z, s) on s = ½+it where a ranges over inequivalent cusps. The eigenfunctions ui(z) with positive eigenvalues are Maass cusp forms.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Maar volcanoes are monogenetic landforms whose craters cut below the pre-eruptive surface and are surrounded by a tephra ring. Both the maar crater and the surrounding tephra rim deposits are typically formed due to magma–water explosive interactions. Northern Chile is located in the Central Volcanic Zone of the Andes where, in literature, 14 maars have been recognized as parasite (6) and individual (8) volcanoes. Amongst these individual maars, 3 of them, namely the Tilocálar Sur, Cerro Tujle, and Cerro Overo volcanoes, are not related to calderas and were emplaced <1 Ma ago by magmatic explosive-effusive and phreatomagmatic eruptions. Based on the evolution and control of the volcanic eruptive styles of these three maars, which have been determined in previous research through fieldwork, stratigraphic, morphometric, textural (density and vesicularity), petrographic, and geochemical analyses, a set of key features that favor a prediction of the emplacement location of maar volcanoes in Central Andes, northern Chile are proposed. The set of features that permit and favor the growth mechanisms for maar formations corresponds to (i) a compressive tectonic setting (e.g., ridge structures), (ii) groundwater recharge (e.g., snowmelt and seasonal rainfall), (iii) the lithological setting (e.g., layers of low permeability), (iv) the presence of aquifer and/or endorheic basins (e.g., lakes or salars), and (v) a period of stress relaxation that permits magma ascent to the surface in volcanically active areas. Considering these characteristics, it is possible to identify places where phreatomagmatic eruption can occur. If the magma ascent flux is lower than the groundwater flux, this can lead to a phreatomagmatic eruption because of groundwater coming into contact with the magma. These eruptive features evidence internal—and external—factors that play an essential role in the transition from explosive-effusive magmatic to phreatomagmatic volcanic eruption styles during the same eruptive period that is one of the biggest challenges in volcanic hazard evaluations. Although, in this contribution, a set of features that permit and favor the growth mechanisms for a prediction of the emplacement location of maars in northern Chile is proposed, these considerations could also be applied to identify potential locations in other parts of the world where magma–water interaction eruption could occur. Therefore, this approach could be useful in the prediction of hydromagmatic volcanic eruptions and, thus, in mitigating the impact of volcanic hazard for the inhabitants of the surrounding areas.

Abstract:
The multi-agent systems (MAS) are a part of artificial intelligence (AI), they have emerged today in the development of major e-learning platforms. Their integration has given new impetus to learning environments by the possibility of integrating new parameters (psychological, pedagogical, ergonomic…) favoring a better adaptation to the learner. In addition, the multiagent approach offers the possibility to design flexible solutions based on a set of agents which are in continuous communication to accomplish the tasks entrusted to them. In this paper, we propose a model of pedagogical support based on a coupling of ontology and multi-agent systems for a synergy of their forces and the important contribution they can make to improve the learning-teaching process. Previous work has been the subject of theoretical foundation related to competency evaluation, and development of an ontology and an algorithm for evaluating competency. As a continuity, we present the design of Multiagent Pedagogical Support System (MaPSS) and the different scenarios of its utilization.

Abstract:
Woven fabric perforation is helpful to be adopted to meet the microstructure requirement of a micro-perforated panel (MPP) absorber. Unlike conventional MPP, the woven fabric micro-perforations are formed by yarn in the x (weft) and y (warp)-directions. Hence, minute holes of the MPP with a diameter of 0.1–0.3 mm or a high perforation ratio are expected to be easily fabricated, while such a specification is difficult to realize on a solid surface, as found in some studies. The study presented here focuses on the use of minute holes in MPP absorbers by woven fabrics and discusses the minute hole properties of woven fabrics and their associated absorption characteristics. Theoretical results by Maa’s model are also used to validate resulting characteristics found from the experimental investigations. It is found that minute holes with around 0.10–0.20 mm diameter have been successfully fabricated by controlling weft yarn density. The woven fabrics are capable of producing half-absorption bandwidth of up to 5000 Hz (>3 octaves), while the peak of the absorption coefficient can be more than 0.8. In addition, varying hole diameter with the order of 10−2 mm can change the absorption behavior for both peak absorption and absorption bandwidth. Such behavior is confirmed by comparing the results with the theoretical model. This study also indicates that Maa’s model is still applicable for predicting absorption of MPP developed based on woven fabric material.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Hydro-volcanism in the Longgang volcanic field (LVF) of Northeast China has produced a dozen maars with features of complex sequences. To better understand the formation mechanism of maar volcanos in the LVF, this study focuses on the Xidadianzi (XDDZ) maar volcano, located in the Jinchuan valley of the LVF. Based on detailed stratigraphy analysis, 14C geochronology, grain-size distribution, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, the eruptive sequence of the XDDZ volcano, including the South Crater and the North Crater, was constructed. The whole sequence was formed after four eruptive phases, including a wet phreatomagmatic eruption, an explosive magmatic eruption, a dry and hot phreatomagmatic eruption, and a small explosive magmatic eruption. 14C geochronology indicates that the formation age of XDDZ is 15,900 ± 70 years, BP. Topographic and stratigraphic characteristics show that the landforms of two craters were damaged and buried because of the destruction of lava flows and agricultural modification. The NE- trending fissure in the hard rock area is thought to participate in the formation of the XDDZ maar volcano.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the change in management accounting and control systems (MACSs) within two large public manufacturing companies in Libya so-called Trucks and Buses Company (TBC) and National Trailers Company (NTC). Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on semi-structured interviews, an analysis of documents and observations. It draws on New Institutional Sociology (NIS) perspective (DiMaggio and Powell’s 1983) as theoretical framework to provide explanations regarding how the MACS in the two companies were shaped by various factors. Findings The main factors identified in shaping the operations of the MACS were the need to comply with the political pressures, the Libyan Government’s laws and regulations, the instructions imposed by the management committee in both companies, leading organizations’ pressures (ISO), customer satisfaction (coercive isomorphism), the influence of professional associations (normative isomorphism) and the need to imitate efficient organizations in order to be more legitimate and successful (mimetic isomorphism). Research limitations/implications The findings of the study have implications for understanding the operations of MACS in developing countries. Future research could focus on alternative theoretical perspectives for the investigation of the process of change in MACS such as structuration theory, agency theory and actor-network theory. Originality/value The proposed theoretical framework provides insights into the process of change by focusing on the interplay between the institutional forces, market forces and intra – organizational power relationships to overcome the criticism of NIS that it downplays the role of market forces and intra – organizational power relations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Flight performance of long-range spacecraft is limited by the need to lift large amounts of fuel into orbit; thus, a propulsion system which will not depend on mass- ejection will be a most welcome development. Various past proposals which attempted to achieve this were rejected because it was thought that they contradicted basic laws of physics. An experimental mechanical device which operates without mass-ejection, (or interaction with the environment), and which can serve as a spacecraft propulsion system, was constructed and successfully tested. It is based on manipulating centrifugal forces, internally generated by rotating masses, and is not size or scale dependent. Full explanation, with photos and movies of its construction and operation, is presented. When fully developed, this technology will enable constant long-duration acceleration of spacecraft (decreasing flight times), permit novel physics research, or enable hovering with or without the presence of atmosphere.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The study of navigator behavior is important for the study of MASSs. This study analyzed navigator behavior through cognitive science, and it modeled the navigator decision-making process. Usually, the assessment of the collision risk for long-distance target ships is conducted through the distance (DCPA) and time (TCPA) to the closest point of approach. The navigator’s decision-making process is carried out quantitatively based on numerical values. Although the angle of the rudder is presented as a numerical value (i.e., 5°, 10°, 15°, and so on), it is expected that the navigator’s use of the rudder will depend on the conventional method rather than the quantitative one. Therefore, a scenario was constructed, and a simulation test was carried out through a ship-handling simulator. Our results confirmed that the rudder was used according to the conventional method. Moreover, the navigator decision-making process was analyzed through cognitive science. Cognitive science has revealed that human judgment is not logical, and that all decision making relies on memory. We identified the type of memory that affects the decision making of navigators: the DCPA and navigators’ decision-making-criteria values were mainly formed by episodic memory. A decision-making model for the relationship between the navigator’s episodic memory and the value of the DCPA was subsequently developed. This study took a scientific approach to analyze the process of the decision making of navigators, and an engineering approach to construct a decision-making model for application in MASSs.

Abstract:
Informal interaction among users may reveal significant information regarding their behaviors in smallcommunities. Although apps like WhatsApp are very popular for informal interaction activities, they, however, lack in providing the user with contextual information of other users present in the surroundings who might be helpful in addressing the queries thus enabling focused information exchange. Thus, there is a requirement of informal interactive environments that can be built on-the-fly, providing anytime-anywhere cost-effective interaction possibilities to the users. Mobile adhoc networks that can be built over wireless networks using wi-fi enabled smart phones, can provide a promising solution to the above problem, even in regions lacking adequate infrastructure. This paper proposes MAKSS, a mobile agent-based knowledge sharing system, comprising mobile user agents to facilitate information exchange among groups of users available in a close vicinity like a college campus. In this system, a user agent belongs to two views- a) a physical view formed by cellular frequency ranges of mobile devices b) a context view constituting a group of user agents having similar interests or contexts. These views help in dissemination of user queries and responses within a group (multicasting) or their routing to the intended persons (of same context as sender but belonging to different physical views). The simulated experiment highlights that the proposed system would work well in introducing users to the focused groups and also evaluates how user agents behave in the collaborative process of knowledge exchange on the parameters of inquisitiveness, responsiveness, reciprocity and cooperativeness.

Analysis of seven near-limb coronal mass ejections (CMEs) has shown that at distances R<1.4R from the center of the Sun CMEs according to their formation can be divided into two types: type 1 CMEs and type 2 CMEs. In the case of type 1 CMEs, the frontal structure (FS) is formed by processes occurring in FS itself, which is the outer shell of the magnetic flux rope. As for type 2 CMEs, EP-CME, internal arched structures erupt, explosively expand, capture and accelerate the more distant arched structures, which merge to form the frontal structure of the type 2 CMEs.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article analyzes the legal basis of cooperation between mass media and citizens' self-government bodies in the implementation of public control. In the developed countries of the world, effective cooperation between civil society institutions and the state is very relevant as a form of cooperation that solves social and economic problems. In this regard, the effectiveness of the state power apparatus, formed with the help of democratic procedures, is related to the presence of public control over the activities of state bodies, which is carried out by civil society institutions. Today, public control is considered not as a means of pressure on the authorities but as a method of harmonious communication between civil society and the state and is one of the main factors that serve to eliminate social tension in society

Abstract:
Numerical values of masses of elementary particles are one of the most fundamental and oldest unsolved problems (the Higgs mechanism does not explain them). In the model presented here for the first time, the theoretical mass of a “heavy electron”, muon, is calculated as 206.7 (±2.5) electron masses, which is 100.0% (±1.2%) of the experimental value of 206.7682827(46). The result is obtained through 100 iterations of the algorithm, which uses random numbers (from the π sequence) to represent the uncertainty of the coordinates of interacting muon substructures. Muon is considered a structure of interconnected nodes - identical deformable balls - and contains, in contrast to a single node as a 1storder structure (and a 1st generation particle, electron) - a layer of 12 nodes surrounding it, thus forming a 2nd-order structure, which also looks like a ball but on a smaller scale. The simplest attraction forces are modelled between the nodes, inversely proportional to the square of the distance, in equilibrium with repulsion forces arising from a relation analogous to the Heisenberg uncertainty formula. The energy-mass of the muon turns out to be equal to the total useful energy released during the structure’s formation - the collapse of 13 nodes initially separated at infinity. We finish with discussing the tauon’s, u- and d-quarks’ masses in simplified cases, showing the generality of our approach. Some implications for future theoretical work are also given.

Abstract:
We have analyzed the fast coronal mass ejection (CME) that occurred on February 25, 2014. The analysis is based on images taken in the 131, 211, 304, and 1700 Å UV channels of the SDO/AIA instrument and from observations obtained in the Hα line (6562.8 Å) with the telescopes of the Teide and Big Bear Observatories. The February 25, 2014 CME is associated with the ejection and subsequent explosive expansion of the magnetic flux rope, which appeared near the solar surface presumably due to the tether-cutting magnetic reconnection. The impulse of full pressure (thermal plus magnetic) resulting from such an “explosion” acts on the overlying coronal arcades, causing them to merge and form an accelerated moving frontal structure of the CME. This pressure impulse also generates a blast collisional shock wave ahead of the CME, whose velocity decreases rapidly with distance. At large distances R>7R₀ (R₀ is the solar radius) from the center of the Sun in front of the CME, a shock wave of another type is formed — a “piston” collisional shock wave whose velocity varies little with distance. At R≥15R₀, there is a transition from a collisional to a collisionless shock wave.

Abstract:
The feasibility of metabolomic fingerprinting approach based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOFMS) was studied to assess its ability to discriminate between maize varieties, and to show the associations between them on the metabolomic level. The non-targeted metabolomic analysis was applied to assess the variability within two varieties grown under different environmental conditions and to characterise the association within a sample set comprising both conventional and transgenic (MON-ØØ81Ø-6) maize varieties cultivated under the same environmental conditions (locality). Typical metabolomic fingerprints were established for individual plants. The plants representing two varieties formed well separated clusters. Metabolomic fingerprints of the second sample set enabled their unambiguous discrimination. The differences in metabolomic fingerprints between maize varieties were identified and documented by grouping in PCA and/or CA. The results indicate a similar genetic basis of transgenic maize varieties as they descend from a MON 810 event. The results explicitly showed that the variability of the metabolites in MON 810 did not exceed the ranges measured within the conventional varieties, thus supporting the concept of substantial equivalence.

Background and Objective: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) are increasing worldwide. Body mass index (BMI) cut-off for MetS can vary. The objective of this study is to identify the optimal BMI cut-off that is associated with MetS. Methods: For the present study, we analyzed participants who are equal to or older than 18 years old. A total of 5498 were analyzed at the present study. Patients were recruited from the population of the primary health care department at King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital. Metabolic risk factors were defined using the 2006 International Diabetes Federation criteria. We collected data personal interview and electronic medical chart review. Physician and nurse interviewers measured the weight (kg) and height (cm) of the participants and BMI was calculated. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was used to obtain the optimal sensitivity and specificity using different BMI cut-off values to predict the presence of diabetes. Results: Of the 5498 participants analyzed, 2049 (37.3%) were male and 3449 (62.7%) were female with female to male ratio 1.7:1. Age was 42.7 ± 15.8 (minimum 18 years and maximum 105 years). MetS was present in 1967 cases (35.8%) where 673 cases (38.8%) were male and 1204 cases (61.2%) were female with female to male ratio 1.6:1, P=0.08. Males were significantly older than females in MetS patients (45.5±12.8 vs. 36.1±13.3 respectively, p<0.0001). BMI was significantly higher in MetS patients (31.9±6.6 vs. 28.3±6.7 respectively, p<0.0001). Optimal BMI cut-off values ranged from 28.50 to 29.50 in total population, 27.50 to 28.50 in male and from 28.50 to 29.50 in female. The AUC was 0.615 (95% CI, 0.590-0.639) in male and 0.686 (95% CI, 0.668-0.704) in female. Regression analysis showed that the risk of MetS was significantly increased at BMI values as low as ≤15.0 kg/m2 and increased progressively as BMI increased for both genders. Applying this criterion to identify the cut-off values resulted in improvements in sensitivity, false negative rate and worsening in specificity and false positive rate. A very small false negative rate ranging from 0.001 to 0.005 resulted by using these lower BMI cut-offs. Conclusion: The diagnostic usefulness of BMI alone in defining obesity in patients with MetS is limited among men and women Saudi adults.

The influence of the secondary process of evaporation of the reaction product on the kinetics of interaction of gases (O2 , Cl2 , NH3 , H2 O and N2 H4 vapors) with the surface of some metals (Cr, Pb, Si, Ge) and compounds (BN, SiO2 , SiC) is discussed. Also is considered the case when the growth of the scale is preceded by the process of gas etching of the metal surface. A general equation is given that describes the scale growth-evaporation kinetic (sample mass change - time) curves during the interaction of gases with the surface of metals and compounds. Special cases of parabolic, cubic and fourth degree processes are discussed. The kinetics of nitridation of the surface of single-crystaline germanium by ammonia and hydrazine vapors was studied in detail. By evaporating the nitride formed on the germanium surface, a film of germanium oxyntride is deposited on a substrate located in the cold zone of the reactor.

Abstract:
Abstract. Rock glaciers are geomorphological expressions of permafrost. Close to sea level in northernmost Norway, in the subarctic Nordkinn peninsula, we have observed several rock glaciers that appear to be active now or were active in the recent past. Active rock glaciers at this elevation have never before been described in Fennoscandia, and they are outside the climatic limits of present-day permafrost according to models. In this study, we have investigated whether or not these rock glaciers are active under the current climate situation. We made detailed geomorphological maps of three rock glacier areas in Nordkinn and investigated the regional ground dynamics using synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR). One of the rock glaciers, namely the Ivarsfjorden rock glacier, was investigated in more detail by combining observations of vertical and horizontal changes from optical images acquired by airborne and terrestrial sensors and terrestrial laser scans (TLSs). The subsurface of the same rock glacier was investigated using a combination of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and refraction seismic tomography (RST). We also measured ground surface temperatures between 2016 and 2020, complemented by investigations using an infrared thermal camera, and a multi-decadal climatic analysis. We mapped the rock glaciers in the innermost parts of Store and Lille Skogfjorden as relict, while the more active ones are in the mouths of both fjords, fed by active talus in the upper slopes. Several of the rock glaciers cross over both the Younger Dryas shoreline (25 m a.s.l.) and the Early to Mid-Holocene shoreline at 13 m a.s.l. Both InSAR and optical remote sensing observations reveal low yearly movement rates (centimetres to millimetres per year). The ERT and RST suggest that there is no longer permafrost and ground ice in the rock glacier, while temperature observations on the front slope indicate freezing conditions also in summer. Based on the in situ temperature measurements and the interpolated regional temperature data, we show that the mean annual air temperature (MAAT) of the region has risen by 2 ∘C since the late 19th century to about 1.5 ∘C in the last decade. MAATs below 0 ∘C 100–150 years ago suggest that new rock glacier lobes may have formed at the end of the Little Ice Age (LIA). These combined results indicate that the Nordkinn rock glaciers are transitioning from active to relict stages. The study shows that transitional rock glaciers are still affected by creep, rock falls, snow avalanches, etc., and are not entirely dynamically dead features. Our contrasting results concerning permafrost presence and rock glacier activity show the importance of a multi-methodological approach when investigating slope processes in the edge zones of permafrost influence.

The problem of motion of a rigid body about a fixed point is one of the classical problems of mechanics. The interest to the problems of the rigid body dynamics has increased in the second half of the XX century in connection with the development of rocket and space technologies. A spacecraft or satellite, while orbiting about its center of mass, experiences torques from forces of diverse physical nature. This includes torques generated by the motion of internal masses, which can arise from factors such as presence of rotating components (like rotors or gyroscopes), and the activities of crew members aboard the crew vehicle. The dynamics of rigid body incorporated moving masses is a significant focal point in classical mechanics. Extensive research is dedicated to investigating the rotation of a rigid body featuring motion of internal masses. It is assumed that the body contains a viscoelastic element that is modeled by a moving mass connected to the body by a strong damper. The moving mass model loosely attached elements in a space vehicles, which can significantly affect the vehicle’s motion about its center of mass during a long period of time. Some cases are considered of the motion of a rigid body containing internal masses connected to the body by means of elastic and dissipative elements. A number of works are devoted to the analysis of various problems of the dynamics of space vehicles containing internal movable masses. The paper develops an approximate solution by means of averaging method to the system of Euler’s equation terms for a nearly dynamically spherical rigid body containing a viscoelastic element under the action of constant body-fixed torque. We obtained the system of motion equations in the standard form which refined in square-approximation by small parameter. Asymptotic approach permits to obtain some qualitative results and to describe evolution of angular motion using simplified averaged equations and numerical solution. The main objective of this paper is to extend the previous results for the problem of motion about a center of mass of a rigid body under the influence of small internal torque (cavity filled with a fluid of high viscosity) or external torque (resistive medium). The importance of the results is in progress of moving mass control motion of spinning projectiles.

Abstract:
Abstract. Liquid clouds form by condensation of water vapour on aerosol particles in the atmosphere. Even black carbon (BC) particles, which are known to be slightly hygroscopic, have been shown to readily form cloud droplets once they have acquired water-soluble coatings by atmospheric aging processes. Accurately simulating the life cycle of BC in the atmosphere, which strongly depends on the wet removal following droplet activation, has recently been identified as a key element for accurate prediction of the climate forcing of BC. Here, to assess BC activation in detail, we performed in situ measurements during cloud events at the Jungfraujoch high-altitude station in Switzerland in summer 2010 and 2016. Cloud droplet residual and interstitial (unactivated) particles as well as the total aerosol were selectively sampled using different inlets, followed by their physical characterization using scanning mobility particle sizers (SMPSs), multi-angle absorption photometers (MAAPs) and a single-particle soot photometer (SP2). By calculating cloud droplet activated fractions with these measurements, we determined the roles of various parameters on the droplet activation of BC. The half-rise threshold diameter for droplet activation (Dhalfcloud), i.e. the size above which aerosol particles formed cloud droplets, was inferred from the aerosol size distributions measured behind the different inlets. The effective peak supersaturation (SSpeak) of a cloud was derived from Dhalfcloud by comparing it to the supersaturation dependence of the threshold diameter for cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) activation measured by a CCN counter (CCNC). In this way, we showed that the mass-based scavenged fraction of BC strongly correlates with that of the entire aerosol population because SSpeak modulates the critical size for activation of either particle type. A total of 50 % of the BC-containing particles with a BC mass equivalent core diameter of 90 nm was activated in clouds with SSpeak≈0.21 %, increasing up to ∼80 % activated fraction at SSpeak≈0.50 %. On a single-particle basis, BC activation at a certain SSpeak is controlled by the BC core size and internally mixed coating, which increases overall particle size and hygroscopicity. However, the resulting effect on the population averaged and on the size-integrated BC scavenged fraction by mass is small for two reasons: first, acquisition of coatings only matters for small cores in clouds with low SSpeak; and, second, variations in BC core size distribution and mean coating thickness are limited in the lower free troposphere in summer. Finally, we tested the ability of a simplified theoretical model, which combines the κ-Köhler theory with the Zdanovskii–Stokes–Robinson (ZSR) mixing rule under the assumptions of spherical core–shell particle geometry and surface tension of pure water, to predict the droplet activation behaviour of BC-containing particles in real clouds. Predictions of BC activation constrained with SSpeak and measured BC-containing particle size and mixing state were compared with direct cloud observations. These predictions achieved closure with the measurements for the particle size ranges accessible to our instrumentation, that is, BC core diameters and total particle diameters of approximately 50 and 180 nm, respectively. This clearly indicates that such simplified theoretical models provide a sufficient description of BC activation in clouds, as previously shown for activation occurring in fog at lower supersaturation and also shown in laboratory experiments under controlled conditions. This further justifies application of such simplified theoretical approaches in regional and global simulations of BC activation in clouds, which include aerosol modules that explicitly simulate BC-containing particle size and mixing state.

Abstract:
Recent experiments have largely reshaped our knowledge of maar volcanism. A new evolutionary model promoting the role of explosion depth and vent migration during the formation of maars has provided an alternative approach to previous models. Despite a few attempts to test this model with real cases, there is still a need for field-based studies exploring the depositional characteristics of maars to better understand the factors affecting the model constraints. More investigations on less known felsic maars are required to elucidate the possible differences from their more common mafic counterparts. Here, we explore compositionally distinct monogenetic clusters within the Acıgöl caldera (NW of Central Anatolian Volcanic Province, CAVP), with four felsic maars (İnallı, Kalecitepe, Acıgöl, and Korudağ) and one mafic maar (İcik). Our field observations reveal a successive formation between rhyolitic maars and adjacent lava domes. The mugearitic İcik coalescent maar and the adjacent scoria cone are synchronously formed, which is disclosed by the intercalation of the maar and scoria cone deposits. The geochemistry of the maar juveniles suggests a parental basaltic magma source that has been possibly differentiated by varying degrees of fractional crystallization. Our findings identify the main factors in maar formation (i.e., optimum scaled depth-OSD, water-magma interaction, and basement lithology). We also determine some differences between the felsic and mafic maars in the region, such as higher juvenile content, less amount of sedimentary structure, and a clear transition from phreatomagmatic to magmatic explosions through the end of stratigraphy. All these reflect the complexity of maars, mainly formed by different depths of explosions that occurred in the shallowest few hundred meters rather than a systematic incremental decrease of the eruption locus. Further geophysical and geochronological studies will complete our proposed evolutionary model for the youngest monogenetic activity in the Acıgöl caldera that would also warrant volcanic hazard assessment due to the presence of low-velocity anomalies, shallow Curie depths, and prevalent geothermal activity.
