Abstract:

Abstract:
A strong sense of tradition emerges in China during a period that looks with nostalgia to the past as an antidote to ongoing political and social disruption. While several versions of that past compete in the writings of the late Zhou masters, the early Zhou period and the “sage” Confucius eventually become central parts of what we might label “the dominant past.” This tradition is then formalized and institutionalized during the Han dynasty with the promotion and enhancement of a classical canon, the appearance of a vast new unifying history of China, and an official bibliography that provides structure and meaning to a growing and diverse world of textual production. Voices of dissent are heard, to be sure, but these are safely incorporated into a tradition that legitimizes invention as an important supplement to transmission.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the emotions experienced in archives by historians and other scholars. It discusses the way in which different disciplinary formations inculcate and teach emotional responses to things, including things found in archives. Voice—language—is treated as a thing—a material object—around which emotion is articulated; other, past emotional responses inhere in it. The case study is Lord Chief Justice William Mansfield (1705–93), who, in many of the cases he adjudicated, wrote his own notes as a kind of a play script, transcribing the evidence of plaintiffs and defendants so that they appear to speak directly out of the past; a long-lost courtroom echoes with the clamorous, insistent voices of poor and middling-sort people. The chapter describes the effect of these voices on the researcher, whose listening is dictated by the accreted stories of the poor that have circulated since the end of the eighteenth century.

Abstract:
On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence over a makeshift wired loudspeaker system to thousands of listeners in Hanoi. Five days later, Ho’s Viet Minh forces set up a clandestine radio station using equipment brought to Southeast Asia by colonial traders. The revolutionaries garnered support for their coalition on air by interspersing political narratives with red music (nhạc đỏ). Voice of Vietnam Radio (VOV) grew from these communist and colonial foundations to become one of the largest producers of music in contemporary Vietnam. In the first comprehensive English-language study on the history of radio music in mainland Southeast Asia, Lonán Ó Briain examines the broadcast voices that reconfigured Vietnam’s cultural, social, and political landscape over a century. Ó Briain draws on a year of ethnographic fieldwork at the VOV studios (2016–17), interviews with radio employees and listeners, historical recordings and broadcasts, and archival research in Vietnam, France, and the United States. From the Indochinese radio clubs of the 1920s to the 75th anniversary celebrations of the VOV in 2020, Voices of Vietnam offers a fresh perspective on this turbulent period by demonstrating how music production and sound reproduction are integral to the unyielding process of state formation.

Abstract:
After Peter the Chanter and Robert of Courson, there was relatively little practical moral discussions in the theology faculty until the rise of the institution known as quodlibets in the 1250s, where it was permitted to pose any question to a theology master. This chapter shows how theology masters returned to the pastoral interests of their predecessors. They revived problems on lying and oath-breaking and thereby included practical problems in the same forum as systematic theology and theoretical ecclesiology. On occasion theologians also brought greater academic and speculative depth to familiar dilemmas taken from the Decretum and pastoral manuals. More significantly, they treated problems that had previously been the preserve of law and pastoral writing as problems that should be addressed by a theology master. These new qualities played an important role in the formation of casuistry as a discipline.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Oxford Handbook of Canadian Cinema offers an overview of the current state of thinking around Canadian cinema. The volume was conceived to register the variety of voices expressing themselves within Canadian cinema with special attention paid to Indigenous, Quebecois, and diasporic identities. As well, the volume acknowledges that Canadian cinema increasingly finds its place within a broad conception of “screen cultures,” which extend into the divergent realms of small-scale artistic experimentation and large-scale public spectacle. Insofar as these realms have played a vital role in establishing Canada’s presence within international screen culture, they are given special emphasis here. Rather than a straight historical account of cinema in Canada, this Oxford Handbook looks at the technological complexes, geographical spaces, and identity formations in which that cinema has emerged and developed.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the place of speech and language in the experiences of people arriving in Britain, and in the formation of British attitudes to them. The presence of refugees, exiles, troops, and war-workers made Britain increasingly multilingual—their voices and accents changed British soundscapes. Changing soundscapes sometimes provoked hostility, with foreign speech heard as an alien sound labelled ‘jabber’. But the presence in Britain of people speaking a very wide range of languages was an asset to the war effort, particularly to wartime propaganda. Their work at the BBC was indispensable in the rapid expansion of services broadcasting to Europe and the world, giving BBC messages their global reach. English was widely regarded as occupying the apex of a hierarchy of languages, but the arrival of people from the English-speaking world with many different accents prompted debates about which kinds of English speech were more civilized than others.

Aston, Emma. Centaurs and Lapiths in the Landscape of Thessaly. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198744771.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
Lapiths and Centaurs are famous figures of Greek myth in both its literary and its artistic representation. However, what is rarely discussed is the localization of their conflict in the landscapes of Thessaly, in northern Greece. This chapter restores the Thessalian dimension, in two ways: first, by examining the landscape of Thessaly as a setting, and second, by reconstructing the involvement of certain of the region’s communities in the formation and development of the myths. It is argued that these communities should be regarded as active participants in myth-making rather than just the backgrounds onto which the myths were projected by non-Thessalians. The ultimate aim, however, is not to identify this local perspective as an isolated one, separate from the literary and artistic traditions by which Lapiths and Centaurs are chiefly known; instead, Thessalian voices feed into, and respond to, the wider myth-making processes of the ancient Greek world.

Full text
Abstract:
This book provides a comprehensive examination of the study of religions in Sweden, from the early twentieth century to the present and shows how the intersection of national and social forces shape the study of religion in specific countries and contexts. It traces the establishment of the study of religions as an integrated part of Higher Education in Sweden and it critically examines the development of the most significant disciplines, themes and questions that form Religious Studies in Sweden. Demonstrating the interconnection between nationality and the formation of the academic study of religion, the book explores how Sweden is often described as the most secularised country in the world, yet the study of religions in Sweden has a long, rich, and diverse history. The book emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of the study of religions, and bring together the voices of 30 scholars. The impact of Swedish scholarship internationally is analysed for the first time.

Abstract:
Mirsad Hadžkadić never planned for a life in politics. Yet, in 2018, he decided to run for the Bosniak presidential council seat in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mirsad made the life-changing decision to run, despite the fact that he had a successful, thirty-year career as a professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and very little experience in politics outside of academia. However, a conversation with a dear friend from Sarajevo planted the idea in his mind. Samir Avdaković suggested that he run for office because “there may never be another election in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the country as we know it will probably disintegrate.” The words rumbled within Mirsad’s mind for the next several months, and he thought to himself, “if what Samir says is so, who am I, because of the comforts I have, to decide not to even try?” After announcing his intentions on national TV in January of 2018, Mirsad began this journey in earnest in May of 2018 by building a campaign from the ground up with the hope of instilling a vision of hope and change and shifting the country’s political discourse. However, he soon learned that the odds were stacked against him. He only had five months and limited funds to prove to the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina that he deserved their votes. And so, he took his meager funds, limited time, and infinite passion to do just that. He toured the country, meeting and talking with citizens, to share his vision of hope and change. Though Mirsad was not victorious on October 7th, his results were deemed historic and unprecedented. A relatively unknown, underfunded independent candidate managed to receive 60,000 votes or ten percent of the total votes cast. And, despite the defeat, Mirsad succeeded in spearheading a democratic movement, resulting in the formation of the Platform for Progress political organization in November of 2018 and the official dawning of The Odyssey for Democracy.

Behrendt, Stephen D. The Transatlantic Slave Trade. Edited by Mark M. Smith and Robert L. Paquette. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199227990.013.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
This article reviews scholarship on the transatlantic slave trade. The foundations of a slave trade historiography date to the late eighteenth-century abolition movements in North America, Britain, and France. Before then, occasional voices sounded in protest. The Dominican friar Tomás de Mercado, for example, published in 1569 an anti-slave trade tract based on his observations of slave sales in Seville and of the institution of slavery in Mexico. From 1698 to 1714, 198 pamphlets concerning the Royal African Company's monopoly were published in England. With the founding of the world's first antislavery crusade, antislavery advocates came to predominate among the researchers who were seeking information on the slave trade. Abolitionist energies coalesced in 1787–9 in London with the formation of anti-slave trade committees and the subsequent British parliamentary inquiries. In this three-year period at least twenty-five British, American, and French authors wrote about the slave trade, a total that would not be reached again until the 1970s, when academics organized the first major conferences on Atlantic slaving.

Abstract:
The Bundestag election was a choice between polarisation and insistence. The parties in the grand coalition had to accept massive losses of votes. Nevertheless, the black-red government under Angela Merkel remained in power. The AfD was the first right-wing populist party to enter the Bundestag. Based on data collected within the framework of the German Longitudinal Election Study (GLES), the most comprehensive research project to date on German elections, this volume offers a comprehensive analysis of the Bundestag elections. It follows on from the two studies on the 2009 and 2013 Bundestag elections and updates the longstanding electoral history of the Federal Republic of Germany from the perspective of empirical electoral research. Written in a scientifically based and understandable manner, the volume analyses the development of politics and public opinion since the Bundestag elections in 2013. It discusses election campaigns, election results and voter behaviour in detail as well as the formation of the government in 2017, which, at that time, had lasted longer than ever before.

Abstract:
Prescription drugs are a basic and invaluable part of society today, but there is debate surrounding the methods of testing new drugs, the possible misuse of prescription drugs, and the economics of drug production and use. This book examines the evolution of prescription drugs in the United States, as well as the formation of the pharmaceutical industry. It begins with a history of prescription drugs, dating back to their origins, then moves through the Industrial Revolution and into the present day. It also delves into the issues and controversies related to prescription drugs, such as drug costs, regulations, prescription drug abuse, insurance complications, and more. Both implemented and proposed solutions are also discussed. One of the most valuable aspects of the book is that it surveys the history of prescription drugs in a manner that helps the reader identify key issues in an easy-to-understand fashion. Finally, the perspectives chapter allows a broad range of voices to be heard, allowing crucial, diverse perspectives to round out the author's expertise.

Abstract:

Abstract:
