Full textThe first chapter presents the basics of plasmonics. The second chapter presents Bedeaux and Vliegler's seductive approach and the notion of excess field s, which allows to define the modified Fresnel coefficients. Chapter 3 presents polarizability calculations for supported nanoparticles, possibly truncated and possibly with a core/shell structure. This involves solving Laplace's equation with boundary conditions imposed by the presence of the substrate and by the geometry of the particle. One of the merits of this thesis is to have been able to synthesize the works of Bedeaux and Vliegler and their formalism. Chapter 4 presents the Granfilm software developed by Rémi Lazzari and Ingve Simonsen, supervisors of Sunniva Indrehus' thesis. Extensions to the proposed models and the further development of a Python-interface (named GranFilmPy) so that the software is more widely used by the community. The examples of simulations obtained by Granfilm (section 4.4) give a good idea of the possibilities of the software. Chapter 5 presents an original way to study the resonance modes in the case of truncated, possibly coated, particles. This consists in arbitrarily strongly reducing the imaginary part of the dielectric function of the metal. The variations of the different resonance modes can then be analyzed very finely. The results are in the form of spectral curves, contour plots of the electrostatic potential in the xz plane, or false color maps (energy in abscissa and geometric parameter in ordinate). The influence of the truncation rate is shown in Figs. 5.10 - 5.12. Chapter 6 considers the polydispersivity of the size and shape of nanoparticles. As in the rest of the manuscript. It is distinguished between the "low coverage regime" and the "finite coverage regime" where the interactions between particles must be taken into account. It also presents the non-negligible influence of the radial particle distribution function (RDF) on the plasmonic response. Implemented in the Granfilm software, taking polydispersivity into account will allow a better interpretation of the widths of resonance peaks

Full textThis thesis attempts to analyse a recurring problem of civil procedure in a comparative context : the so-called excess of formalism and the ways to overcome it. It is structured around a comparative analysis of French and Swiss law in the light of the European Convention on Human Rights. It starts from the assumption that two different approaches are possible : the one relying on the interpretation of civil procedure (private law based approach) ; the other aiming at directly implementing the right to a fair trial in the judicial case law (public law based approach). The first part of the thesis is dedicated to a historical presentation of the both above mentioned approaches. French law, as analysed on the period going from 1806 to the adoption of the New Code of Civil Procedure, has been build on the private law based approach, whereas Swiss law has very early developed, for constitutional reason, a public law based approach which is also followed by the European Court of Human Rights. The second part of the thesis deals with the present state of the legislation in both countries, and with the case law of the European Court of Human Rights. The examination is conducted through concrete problems (procedural flaws and reasonable interpretation of Judicial law). In conclusion, it is noted that both approaches, either based on public or on private law, are mainly complementary and that French and Swiss law would therefore benefit from a mutual enrichment

Full textThe internal composition of our planet is a large topic of study and involves many scientific disciplines. The extreme conditions of pressure and temperature prevailing inside the core (consisting primarily of iron and nickel) and the mantle (consisting mainly of perovskites) make the determination of the exact compositions very difficult. This thesis contributes to recent studies whose aim is to determine more accurately the chemistry of these minerals. Its purpose is the development of a tool for the calculation of seismic wave velocities within methods based on ab-initio simulations. These velocities are calculated from the full elastic tensor, including the atomic relaxation and induced changes in the crystal field. We use the approach of the density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) to eliminate numerical uncertainties induced by conventional methods based on finite differences. We combine this approach with the « Projector Augmented-Wave » (PAW) formalism that takes into account all the electrons of the system with a low computational cost. We apply the method on core and mantle materials and we determine the effects of various lights elements (Si, S, C, O and H) on the seismic wave velocities of pure iron, as well as the effect of aluminum in the perovskite MgSiO3

Full textNuclear fission, where an atomic nucleus separates into two fragments while emitting a large amount of energy, is at the core of many applications in society (energy production) and national security (deterrence, non-proliferation). It is also a key ingredient of the mechanisms of formation of elements in the universe. Yet, nearly 80 years after its experimental discovery its theoretical description in terms of the basic constituents of the nucleus (protons and neutrons) and their interaction remains a challenge. In this thesis, we describe the fission process as follows. In a first step, we use large supercomputers to compute the deformation properties of the nucleus based on our knowledge of nuclear forces. In a second step, we simulate the time evolution of the system from its ground state up to the fragments separation with a fully quantum-mechanical approach called the time-dependent generator coordinate method (TDGCM). While results are in good qualitative agreement with experimental data, the implementation of the TDGCM so far had been greatly simplified using what is known as the Gaussian overlap approximation (GOA). We also developed the formalism and a numerical implementation of the exact TDGCM - without the GOA. This will allow the first systematic validation of that approximation and an assessment of the resulting theoretical uncertainties. The second chapter presents the description of the neutron induced fission process using the TDGCM+GOA. The third one introduces the developments carried out in this thesis allowing the description of the fission process with the TDGCM without the GOA. The last chapter shows the first results obtained with this approach

Full textIn this work, we have developed the Hartree-Fock (HF) approximation in momentum space for deformed nuclei with a general nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential. The structure of such a potential has been investigated in momentum space from its symmetries. Its constructions has been realized in a tensorial separable momentum-spin-isospin representation. Moreover, to treat low-momentum interactions, we have implemented the Similarity Renormalization Group approach. Three momentum representations have been studied: the plane-wave, the partial-wave and the confined plane-wave. The numerical implementation has been validated against an existing HF-Skyrme code in the harmonic oscillator basis. We have found that the confined plane-wave basis provides many advantages over the two others, namely: flexible construction of symmetry-adapted bases, efficient calculation of matrix elements (nuclear, Coulomb and center of mass kinetic correction) and optimization in ressources (time and memory). This basis is characterized by two parameters: the confinement box size (cube) which can be essentially related to the nuclear radius and a single-particle momentum cut-off which is directly linked to the cut-off in relative momentum of the interaction. Bulk properties of some spherical and deformed even-even nuclei in the mass region A < 100 have been calculated with recently developed NN potentials. The resulting residual interaction has been derived to study pairing correlations within the Highly Truncated Diagonalization Approach (HTDA). In particular, the question of the convergence with the model space has been addressed
