Abstract:
În perioada 16 – 20 septembrie 2019, a avut loc la Suceava cea de-a 13-a conferință internațională a Grupului de lucru IUFRO* 7.03.10 „Methodology of forest insect and disease survey in Central Europe”, cu titlul „Recent Changes in Forest Insects and Pathogens Significance”. Conferința este organizată, la fiecare 2 ani, de către universități sau institute de cercetare din domeniul forestier din Europa iar, după 19 ani, conferința revine în România. Facultatea de Silvicultură din cadrul Universităţii ”Ștefan cel Mare” a avut onoarea de a fi organizatoarea acestei manifestări științifice importante, sub coordonarea comitetului grupului de lucru IUFRO 7.03.10. La buna desfășurare a conferinței au contribuit Asociația „Societatea pentru Silvicultură si Mediu Suceava”, precum și sponsorii Regia Națională a Pădurilor Romsilva și compania AlphaScent (USA). Temele abordate în cadrul conferinței se încadrează în sfera preocupărilor privind dăunătorii și bolile care afectează pădurile din Emisfera Nordică și identificarea de soluții tehnice pentru controlul bolilor și dăunătorilor, respectiv: actualizarea informațiilor privind distribuția bolilor si dăunătorilor forestieri; identificarea si monitorizarea speciilor invazive de boli și dăunători și identificarea de soluții pentru reducerea impactului bolilor și dăunătorilor forestieri. Conferința a reunit peste 80 de participanți și invitați, cercetători și practicieni din domeniul protecției pădurilor din 19 țări, care au împărtășit rezultatele activității lor în domeniul protecției pădurilor în cadrul celor 31 de prezentări orale și a celor 28 de postere afișate. Cu sprijinul colegilor de la Direcția Silvică Suceava, Ocolul Silvic Adâncata și Ocolul Silvic Pojorâta, programul conferinței a inclus o excursie in rezervațiile naturale Pădurea Zamostea Luncă și Codrul Secular Giumalău, o ocazie rară pentru participanți de a cunoaște și admira frumusețea naturii acestui colț de țară.

Abstract:
Quoique la gestion forestière multiusages (Gfmu) soit promue par les codes forestiers d'Afrique centrale, cette approche reste mal comprise et peu mise en oeuvre pour les forêts de production et les forêts communautaires. L'article présente les résultats de 62 entretiens avec des personnes impliquées dans la gestion forestière au Cameroun, au Gabon et en République démocratique du Congo, et fait ressortir trois interprétations de la Gfmu : une exploitation durable du bois intégrant secondairement les usages des autres acteurs ; une utilisation coutumière des ressources par les populations locales ; une gestion planifiée et formelle de la diversité des biens et fonctions fournis par ces écosystèmes. L'analyse détaillée de huit études de cas montre en pratique que l'aménagement durable de la forêt se focalise presque toujours sur l'exploitation du bois ; quoique l'utilisation du gibier et la collecte des produits forestiers non ligneux soient systématiquement mentionnés dans les documents d'aménagement. À l'inverse, les services environnementaux - séquestration du carbone, protection des bassins versants - ou les biens publics y sont quasi absents. L'inscription de différents usages dans les documents de gestion ne suffit toutefois pas pour qu'ils soient toujours mis en oeuvre sur le terrain. Trois pistes sont explorées pour renforcer l'application de la Gfmu dans le bassin du Congo : concevoir la Gfmu à l'échelle du paysage et non à celle du massif forestier ; améliorer le contenu des documents d'aménagement forestier pour y inclure et valoriser l'ensemble des usages de la forêt ; renforcer le contrôle de l'application effective des documents de gestion, grâce à la certification ou à un meilleur contrôle du respect de la légalité.

À partir des usages et représentations que les services forestiers et les communautés du Maroc rural se font du cairn, monticule rocheux servant de borne, le propos de cet article est de montrer comment l'ontologie naturaliste véhiculée par le code forestier s'oppose à l'ontologie analogique locale sur le statut à donner à la frontière entre espace cultivé et forêt. Pour le code forestier, le cairn se résume strictement à une borne de cadastre fidèle à une optique de topographe dans le cadre d'une organisation technocratique de l'espace. L'usage que les communautés du Maroc rural se font des cairns est bien plus polyvoque. Si délimiter est une des fonctions attribuées au cairn, il est aussi perçu comme une borne d'étape de saint, comme un point de rencontre entre le monde des humains (l'espace cultivé) et celui des génies (la forêt), comme un belvédère et comme un lieu rituel. Alors que le code forestier se limite à voir dans le cairn un outil pour transposer une rationalité de droits dans le territoire, les communautés l'inscrivent dans une sémiotique de l'espace. Malgré ces écarts de points de vue, dans la pratique les cairns de domanialisation de la forêt s'avèrent être des points de négociation des ontologies résultant des interactions complexes entre forestiers et paysans. Dans la région d'Essaouira, l'appropriation symbolique de l'intervention du forestier par les communautés berbérophones se réalise par l'investissement rituel du bornage domanial par les femmes. Au final, l'article tentera de démontrer que la négociation des ontologies autour du cairn a pour effet l'hybridation des modalités de gestion forestière, et donc des politiques publiques.

Dans le domaine forestier, la surface terrière est couramment utilisée pour caractériser la compétition entre les arbres d’un peuplement. Pourtant, les développements théoriques des deux dernières décennies permettent de conclure que cette approche est insuffisante, notamment vis-à-vis de la compétition pour la ressource lumière. La théorie nous indique même que la bonne performance, dans certains cas, de la surface terrière ne serait que fortuite et liée à des conditions bien spécifiques. C’est ce que nous présentons et discutons dans cette courte note. Nous appelons ainsi la communauté forestière française à développer et valoriser davantage les mesures des houppiers afin de mieux rendre compte de la compétition entre arbres au sein des peuplements forestiers.

Abstract:
En Haïti, les parcs nationaux ont été créés pour préserver les rares massifs forestiers qui sont constamment menacés par l'agriculture et l'élevage. Toutefois, des études scientifiques sur la dynamique paysagère des écosystèmes forestiers des parcs d’Haïti ont reçu peu d’attention. Cette étude a pour objectif de cartographier et quantifier la perte de couverture forestière dans les parcs nationaux naturels de la Forêt des Pins (PNN-FP2), de La-visite (PNN-LV) et de Macaya (PNN-M) de 1985 à 2018. Une analyse diachronique, grâce à la classification supervisée des images Landsat appuyée sur les outils d'analyse de l'écologie du paysage, a été réalisée. Les résultats montrent une dynamique paysagère matérialisée par des pertes du couvert forestier de 56%, 36% et 46% respectivement au sein du PNN-FP2, PNN-LV et PNN-M entre 1985 à 2018, à travers la dissection et la fragmentation des taches par opposition à la dynamique progressive des surfaces agricoles et du sol nu sous-tendue par la création et l'agrégation des taches. Les taux annuels de déforestation, importants entre 1998/1999-2017/2018, ont varié entre -0,09% et -2,72% selon les parcs. Etant donné que les paysages de ces trois parcs nationaux étudiés sont très dynamiques, il est urgent d'adopter une politique de leur conservation soutenue par des mesures de développement socio-économique local.

Les techniques de mesure de la fréquentation sont variées et, souvent, elles ne permettent pas de distinguer la fréquentation d'un lieu, de l'attraction exercée par celui-ci, et, si l'on y parvient, il est alors presqu'impossible d'associer les attributs préférés du paysage végétal aux préférences énoncées par les utilisateurs. L'indice de fréquentation différentielle élaboré ici permet non seulement de démontrer l'existence d'inégalités dans la fréquentation des sites, mais aussi d'associer ces inégalités de la fréquentation aux attraits du milieu forestier ambiant. En effet, la distribution spatiale de ces inégalités d'attraction n'est pas attribuable au seul fait du hasard. Au contraire, ces inégalités sont réparties d'une manière organisée, et leur appartenance à un type de communauté forestière contribue certainement à leur explication. Cette appartenance n'est pas le seul facteur explicatif de l'attraction. Toutefois, bien que la recherche ait porté sur plus d'une vingtaine de paramètres tant physiques, spatiaux que forestiers, cet article se limite uniquement à présenter l'indice de fréquentation différentielle mis au point et, à faire la preuve de l'existence de ce lien entre l'attraction d'un site de camping et son milieu forestier ambiant.

La directive européenne « Habitats, Faune, Flore » exige des états membres de l’union européenne de faire une évaluation de l’état de conservation des habitats inscrits à l’annexe I de cette directive et présents au sein de leurs sites, constituant le réseau Natura 2000. En France, le premier gestionnaire de sites du réseau Natura 2000 se trouve être l’Office National des Forêts, qui a en charge 20% des sites Natura 2000. Or se pose pour cet organisme la question de savoir si la gestion forestière qu’il pratique est compatible avec les exigences de la directive, à savoir maintenir dans un bon état de conservation les habitats présents dans les sites dont il a la charge. L’objectif de cette thèse est dans un premier temps de définir en quoi consiste un bon état de conservation puis de voir, au travers de quelques exemples pris dans des forêts du Bassin parisien, l’impact de la gestion forestière sur l’état de conservation des habitats forestiers. Les indicateurs utilisés sont la flore herbacée et la flore bryophytique humo-terricole, au travers de l’approche phytosociologique sigmatiste, et les formes d’humus par le biais du « Humus Index » et de l’épaisseur des différents horizons holorganiques. L’échantillonnage a été effectué dans différentes unités de gestion décrivant des cycles sylvicoles (approche synchronique) en conditions stationnelles homogènes. Pour l’habitat « Hêtraie-Chênaie atlantique acidiphile » (DH 9120), nous présentons un exemple de conversion de taillis-sous-futaie en futaie régulière, avec comme essence objectif le chêne sessile, et un exemple de hêtraie acidiphile dont la sylviculture est dynamisée. Pour l’habitat « Hêtraie de l’Asperulo-Fagion » (DH 9130), le travail est réalisé sur un ensemble de trois massifs forestiers relevant du même syntaxon mais appartenant à trois régions forestières naturelles différentes. On mesure également dans ce cas les effets de la dynamisation de la sylviculture. D’une manière générale, si la richesse spécifique augmente sous l’influence des nouvelles pratiques sylvicoles, cet accroissement de la biodiversité se fait au détriment des espèces bryophytiques et cormophytiques caractéristiques des habitats forestiers étudiés. Une des explications relève de l’état de surface du sol, fortement affecté par le passage des engins d’exploitation, qui génèrent entre autre le tassement des sols forestiers. Ce tassement est défavorable notamment aux géophytes, qui constituent une part importante du pool des espèces caractéristiques des habitats. Une autre explication tient dans la dynamisation de la sylviculture. Celle-ci se traduit par une diminution du matériel dendrologique sur pied, donc un changement au niveau du micro-climat stationnel (plus de lumière, une hygrométrie de l’air plus faible). Or, les espèces typiques des habitats forestiers sont des hygro-sciaphiles. Un autre résultat important concerne la forme d’humus. Cette dernière indique que les processus d’humification et de minéralisation de l’épisolum humifère sont plus rapides avec les nouveaux modes sylviculturaux. On peut émettre l’hypothèse que l’arrivée plus importante de lumière au sol favorise ces processus biologiques. Enfin, le dernier point qui mérite d’être souligné concerne l’échelle de validité de ces résultats. L’exemple des hêtraies neutroclines indique que l’échelle de validité et de transposition des résultats à d’autres massifs forestiers correspond à celui de la région naturelle<br>The European “Habitats” directive urges EU state members to evaluate the state of conservation of their habitats listed in the Annex I, which form in France the so-called “Natura 2000” network. In France, the “Office National des Forets” is in a leader position, being in charge of 20% of all Natura 2000 sites. However, there is a concern about the compatibility of forest management practices commonly performed by this institution and the protective rules edicted by EU. In particular the maintenance of a good state of conservation of forest habitats can be questioned. The purpose of the present thesis was first to define a good state of conservation for forests of the Paris Basin, then to see, through several examples, whether their state of conservation was impacted by forest management. Herbs and humus/soil dwelling mosses were used as indicators, according to the phytosociological approach, as well as humus forms, using Humus Index and depth of holorganic horizons. Sampling was done in different management units, describing the forest cycle (synchronic approach) in homogeneous site conditions. For the habitat “Acidophilic atlantic beech-oak forest” (DH 9120), we showed an example of conversion of coppices-with-standards to full-grown stands, with sessile oak as a target timber species, and an example of an acidophilic beech forest where sylviculture was made more dynamic. For the habitat “Beech forest of the Asperulo-Fagion type” (DH 9130), our study was performed in three forests belonging to the same phytosociological syntaxon but located in three different climatic regions. In this case, too, we measured the effects of a more dynamic sylviculture. As a general rule, species richness increases under the influence of new sylvicultural practices. However, such an increase was not shown by mosses as well as by higher plants typically living in woodland. One explanation is the surface state of forest soils, which is strongly affected by exploitation traffic, mainly through soil compaction. Soil compaction disfavours geophytes, which are the main component of typical forest vegetation. Another explanation lies in the more dynamic sylviculture. The decreasing standing crop imposes a change in climate conditions, with more light and less humidity. This disfavours typical forest species, which commonly live in a shady and moist environment. Another important result concerns changes in humus forms under the new sylviculture. The Humus Index indicates a more rapid humification and mineralisation of topsoil organic matter. We hypothesize that soil biological processes are activated by more light arriving at the ground surface. At last, we want to highlight the importance of the geograhical range over which our results can be considered valid. The example of neutrocline beech forests shows that the appropriate scale for extrapolating our results is that of the natural (climatic) region

Sur une période s'étalant de 1920 à 1967, les forestiers ne se sont pas contentés de la seule fonction d'opérateurs économiques à l'origine de leur aventure coloniale au Gabon. Il leur fallut bouger au rythme des mouvements qui ont affecté la société française dans son ensemble c'est-à-dire la métropole, ses territoires et ses départements d'outre-mer, se structurant notamment en fonction des changements politiques, des transformations technologiques, et des bouleversements économiques. L'identité du groupe a aussi une histoire originale, non calquée sur le modèle de ses concurrents. Son étude sur près d'un demi-siècle a donc tenté de mettre en relief les interactions entre l'économique, le politique, le culturel tout en ne négligeant pas les spécificités corporatives et locales. Comme tout groupe social particulier se doit d'être étudié par rapport à la société qui l'englobe, il nous a paru donc capital de décrire à chaque fois que nous le pouvions l'atmosphère sociétale, les éléments de contexte qui prévalaient au moment des faits relatés. Faire donc cette histoire des forestiers au Gabon, c'était donné à voir les forces agissantes du Gabon colonial.

Nous avons utilisé un sondage en méthode-Q – une technique d’étude de la subjectivité – pour explorer les différentes perceptions de la certification forestière au Québec. Nous avons découvert trois discours distincts. Aussi, nous avons effectué une analyse des changements institutionnels en cours dans le milieu forestier québécois. Nous prévoyons que le régime forestier subira un important effort de décentralisation et que la certification forestière y jouera un rôle. Si cela s’avère vrai, ceux qui perçoivent la certification comme un outil de gestion feront valoir le leadership des industriels forestiers en matière de certification. Ils voudront sécuriser le rôle traditionnel d’aménagiste et de gestionnaires des forêts publiques assumé par les firmes privées. D’autre part, ceux qui voient la certification comme un outil de relation publique devrait s’opposer à la réforme envisagée. Ils demanderont des preuves de l’efficacité de la certification forestière pour améliorer l’aménagement forestier. Finalement, ceux qui voient la certification comme un outil de gouvernance approuveront la réforme et chercheront à la catalyser. Ils demanderont à ce que les processus de participation publique soient précisés de manière à améliorer le partage des pouvoirs et la distribution équitable des responsabilités en aménagement forestier.<br>We have used a Q-methodology survey – a subjectivity studying technique – to explore different perceptions of forest certification in Quebec. Three different viewpoints were discovered. We have also done an analysis of institutional changes within Quebec's forest sector. As a result, we expect Quebec's forest regime to undergo an important effort of decentralization in which forest certification will play an important role. First, we have individuals who primarily view certification as a tool of management and who may place greater importance on forest industries' certification leadership. People in this category may want the traditional role of private firms as developers and managers of the crown's forests to be secured. On the other hand, there are people who view certification as a tool for public relations and who may be opposed to preserving the traditional role of private firms. For this group of people, proof of improvement of certified forest practices would be a requirement. Finally, people who view certification as a tool of governance may approve of reform and thus, try to catalyze it. Nous avons utilisé un sondage en méthode-Q – une technique d’étude de la subjectivité – pour explorer les différentes perceptions de la certification forestière au Québec. Nous avons découvert trois discours distincts. Aussi, nous avons effectué une analyse des changements institutionnels en cours dans le milieu forestier québécois. Nous prévoyons que le régime forestier subira un important effort de décentralisation et que la certification forestière y jouera un rôle. Si cela s’avère vrai, ceux qui perçoivent la certification comme un outil de gestion feront valoir le leadership des industriels forestiers en matière de certification. Ils voudront sécuriser le rôle traditionnel d’aménagiste et de gestionnaires des forêts publiques assumé par les firmes privées. D’autre part, ceux qui voient la certification comme un outil de relation publique devrait s’opposer à la réforme envisagée. Ils demanderont des preuves de l’efficacité de la certification forestière pour améliorer l’aménagement forestier. Finalement, ceux qui voient la certification comme un outil de gouvernance approuveront la réforme et chercheront à la catalyser. Ils demanderont à ce que les processus de participation publique soient précisés de manière à améliorer le partage des pouvoirs et la distribution équitable des responsabilités en aménagement forestier.<br>We have used a Q-methodology survey – a subjectivity studying technique – to explore different perceptions of forest certification in Quebec. Three different viewpoints were discovered. We have also done an analysis of institutional changes within Quebec's forest sector. As a result, we expect Quebec's forest regime to undergo an important effort of decentralization in which forest certification will play an important role. First, we have individuals who primarily view certification as a tool of management and who may place greater importance on forest industries' certification leadership. People in this category may want the traditional role of private firms as developers and managers of the crown's forests to be secured. On the other hand, there are people who view certification as a tool for public relations and who may be opposed to preserving the traditional role of private firms. For this group of people, proof of improvement of certified forest practices would be a requirement. Finally, people who view certification as a tool of governance may approve of reform and thus, try to catalyze it. Such individuals will demand an enhancement of public involvement processes in the forest sector. This group of people will want forest management responsibilities and power to be more equitable.

Bank vole (Myodes glareolus) is widely spread silvicolous species, inhabiting in woods, forest clearings, shrub vegetation, at forest edge, near ponds with abundant vegebtation. The parasite fauna is structured of 3 classes, 13 families, 14 genera and 15 species, of which 6.6% belong to class Trematoda, 46.7% to class Cestoda and 46.7% to class Nematoda. The results of the parasitological investigations show a prevalence of Plaghiorchis elegans of 13.8% and an average intensity of 3.8 ex, respectively with Mesocestoides lineatus larvae 14.0%, 1.5 ex, Paranoplocephala omphaloides - 10.3%, 2.7 ex, Rodentolipis straminea - 69.0%, 3.0 ex, Hydatigera taeniaeformis larvae - 10.3%, 1.0 ex, Catenotaenia cricetorum - 10.3%, 2.7 ex, Skrewabinotaenia lobata - 3 ex, Taenia pisiformis - 13.7%, 1.0 ex, Capillaria hepatica - 27.5% and liver infestation is about 50.0% (++), Syphacia stroma - 17.2%, 94 ex, Syphacia obvelata - 24,1%, 84,9 ex, Heligmosomoides polygirus - 10,0%, 5,3 ex, Strongyloides ratti - 6,9%, 23,3 ex, Mastophorus muris - 17,2%, 3 , 6 ex and Trichocephalus muris 17.2%, intensity 3.8 ex. The aim of the research is to study the diversity of parasite fauna in Myodes glareolus from forest ecosystems with specifying the parasite taxonomic structure and determining the degree of infestation.

The total content of heavy metals (As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Zn) in the wood of different species of trees in the forest ecosystem "Forest Hânceşti" was determined. The contents of HM in different wood species (strong/soft) trees were different. Bioaccumulation Factor (BCF) of HM for different tree species differ greatly from species to species and ecosystem. Analyzed wood tree species have been bioaccumulated HM in the following order: Zn&gt;Cu&gt;Ni&gt;Cd&gt;Pb&gt;Cr&gt;Co&gt;As. Mobility Factor (MF), evaluated in order to estimate accumulation of HM in the wood of the trees studied from atmospheric air through the leaf material, with the exception of Pb is &gt;1, indicating polluted air as a major source of impairment of studded forestry species.

The forests on the natural distribution area from the silvosteppe zone, under the influence of climate change will experience major changes in their structure and functioning. The analysis of growth parameters for Fraxinus excelsior, Quercus petraea, Q. robur in three experimental areas from center of the Republic of Moldova indicates that the radial growth processes are influenced by the same complex of climatic factors, which differ being dendroclimatic response intensity. It has been shown that between the annual tree growth and forest aridity index - FAI, there are close correlations: the higher FAI values indicate the lower annual growth of the trees, and vice versa, low FAI values identify good development conditions of the stands (higher increases in the annual ring width).

Abstract:
This article reports on the edaphic beetle diversity and abundance study conducted on the teritory of the Republic of Moldova during 2005 and 2014 in forest ecosystems located near Branzeni and Zabriceni. All insects were collected using pitfall traps techniques. In total, 1620 beetle specimens were collected, representing 31 species from 17 genera and 4 families. The largest family was Carabidae, followed by Silphidae, Scarabaeidae and Lucanidae. Carabidae also represented the greatest proportion in terms of number of individuals. Seventeen species were common in all investigated forest ecosystems. The most abundant and dominant for all ecosystems investigated proved to be the species Nicrophorus vespilloides. Of the rare beetle species in the investigated forests have been reported species Carabus ullrichi and Lucanus cervus both with the status of vulnerable species.

The Southeast Coast Network (SECN) conducts long-term terrestrial vegetation monitoring as part of the nationwide Inventory and Monitoring Program of the National Park Service (NPS). The vegetation community vital sign is one of the primary-tier resources identified by SECN park managers, and monitoring is currently conducted at 15 network parks (DeVivo et al. 2008). Monitoring plants and their associated communities over time allows for targeted understanding of ecosystems within the SECN geography, which provides managers information about the degree of change within their parks’ natural vegetation. 2019 marks the first year of conducting this monitoring effort on four SECN parks, including Fort Pulaski National Monument (FOPU). Twelve vegetation plots were established at Fort Pulaski National Monument in August. Data collected in each plot included species richness across multiple spatial scales, species-specific cover and constancy, species-specific woody stem seedling/sapling counts and adult tree (greater than 10 centimeters [3.9 inches {in}]) diameter at breast height (DBH), overall tree health, landform, soil, observed disturbance, and woody biomass (i.e., fuel load) estimates. This report summarizes the baseline (year 1) terrestrial vegetation data collected at Fort Pulaski National Monument in 2019. Data were stratified across two dominant broadly defined habitats within the park (Maritime Tidal Wetlands and Maritime Upland Forests and Shrublands). Noteworthy findings include: Sixty-six vascular plant taxa were observed across 12 vegetation plots, including six taxa not previously known from the park. Plots were located on both Cockspur and McQueen’s Island. The most frequently encountered species in each broadly defined habitat included: Maritime Tidal Wetlands: smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora), perennial saltmarsh aster(Symphyotrichum enuifolium), and groundsel tree (Baccharis halimifolia) Maritime Upland Forests and Shrublands: yaupon (Ilex vomitoria), southern/eastern red cedar (Juniperus silicicola + virginiana), and cabbage palmetto (Sabal palmetto). Four non-native species identified as invasive by the Georgia Exotic Pest Plant Council (GA-EPPC 2018) were found during this monitoring effort. These species (and their overall frequency of occurrence within all plots) included: Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica; 17%), bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum; 8%), Vasey’s grass (Paspalum urvillei; 8%), and European common reed (Phragmites australis; 8%). Two rare plants tracked by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GADNR 2013) were found during this monitoring effort. These include Florida wild privet (Forestiera segregata) and Bosc’s bluet (Oldenlandia boscii). Southern/eastern red cedar and cabbage palmetto were the most dominant species within the tree stratum of the maritime Upland Forest and Shrubland habitat type. Species that dominated the sapling and seedling strata of this type included yaupon, cabbage palmetto, groundsel tree, and Carolina laurel cherry (Prunus caroliniana). The health status of sugarberry (Celtis laevigata)—a typical canopy species in maritime forests of the South Atlantic Coastal Plain--observed on park plots appeared to be in decline, with most stems experiencing elevated levels of dieback and low vigor. Over the past decade, this species has been experiencing unexplained high rates of dieback and mortality throughout its range in the Southeastern United States; current research is focusing on what may be causing these alarming die-off patterns. Duff and litter made up the majority of downed woody biomass (fuel loads) across FOPU vegetation plots.

Maritime Upland Forests and Shrublands: live oak (Quercus virginiana), redbay, saw palmetto, muscadine (Muscadinia rotundifolia), and Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) Two non-native species, Chinaberry (Melia azedarach) and bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum), categorized as invasive by the Georgia Exotic Pest Plant Council (GA-EPPC 2018) were encountered in four different Maritime Upland Forest and Shrubland plots during this monitoring effort. Six vascular plant species listed as rare and tracked by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GADNR 2022) were observed in these monitoring plots, including the state listed “Rare” Florida swampprivet (Forestiera segregata var. segregata) and sandywoods sedge (Carex dasycarpa) and the “Unusual” green fly orchid (Epidendrum conopseum). Longleaf and pond pine were the most dominant species within the tree stratum of Coastal Plain Upland Open Woodland habitat types; live oak was the most dominant species of Maritime Upland Forest and Shrubland types. Saw palmetto and rusty staggerbush (Lyonia ferruginea) dominated the sapling stratum within Maritime Upland Forest and Shrubland habitat types. Of the 20 tree-sized redbay trees measured during this monitoring effort only three were living and these were observed with severely declining vigor, indicating the prevalence and recent historical impact of laurel wilt disease (LWD) across the island’s maritime forest ecosystems. There was an unexpectedly low abundance of sweet grass (Muhlenbergia sericea) and saltmeadow cordgrass (Spartina patens) within interdune swale plots of Maritime Open Upland habitats on the island, which could be a result of grazing activity by feral horses.
