Tomlinson, Nora. "The achievement of Ford Madox Ford as editor." Thesis, Open University, 1996. http://oro.open.ac.uk/19038/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis challenges the conventional opinion that Ford Madox Ford was a great editor. It establishes criteria by which an editor can be judged; these are the literary and cultural opinions on which a review operates, an awareness of the needs of readers of a review as revealed in its style and content, and the way in which a review is managed. These criteria are applied to three different, though overlapping fields of enquiry. Firstly, the thesis examines how far Ford's editorial practice was consistent with his own literary and critical principles as expressed through a long and varied writing career. Secondly, it places the two reviews edited by Ford in the context of the society which produced them, English Review in London between 1908 and 1910, and The Transatlantic Review in Paris in 1924, and compares these two reviews with a wide range of contemporary cultural journals on the basis of the three criteria outlined above. Finally the study compares Ford's achievement as editor of The English Review and The Transatlantic Review. It concludes that while Ford was a good editor in some respects, he was not the great editor which is so often claimed for him.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study Ford Madox Ford, né Hueffer, in his various relations with France where he exiled himself since 1922 until the day of his death. The first part of this study (4 chapters) consists of an attempt to study the international review Ford founded and edited in Paris in 1924. The aim of this review which lasted 12 months, was to promote internationalism in the world of letters. Entitled the transatlantic review, it published french, english and american writers at a time where there was a large number of american expatriates in Paris. In the second part of this work, we investigate Ford's relations with Provence, this part of France where he lived for long stretches of time. It consists of three chapters, the first one of which is an analysis of the presence of Provence in Ford's best novel. The good soldier (1915). Follows a study of the type of vision Ford had of this part of France, as well as an analytical study of the place of Provence in the larger context of ford's vision of the world in which he lived

„ What if Adaptive Personalization excelled Hardware Customization? “ Adaptive Vehicle Personalization Human mobility is about to create a generation of " Movers"  - a new breed of mobility users with global transportation  needs and a connection to multiple urban areas  already from a young age. Expectations towards mobility go towards adaptable and personalized solutions and technological advancements should enable a strategy in which one vehicle could adapt to multiple qualities. The final result is an adaptable urban mobility solution designed for global membership use in the year 2025. The intention of the project has been to holistically investigate how Vir tual Reality can influence the design process and result of interior and exterior. The goal has been to inspire and to show a believable way of how in the future adaptive personalization could excel hardware customization in order to suit the different and changing needs of various mobility service users.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This chapter seeks to educe the forms of truth that impressionist aesthetics wants to elicit from representation by re-approaching the relationship between particular impressions and universal categories of experience, in order to ask what happens when realism, a mode premised on the production of consensual knowledge, encounters the contingencies of individual vision. Ford insists upon a holistic axiom of literary impressionism in his critical writings, insisting that a thing conceived apart from its relationships would not be a thing, since all language is a matter of relating some things to other things. Yet Ford’s narrators seek a kind of knowledge that is not discursive—that does not rely on the choice of a particular linguistic formulation, and that one cannot be argued out of. Ford stages this descriptive limit by exploiting a set of non-descriptive terms—everything and nothing. The indescribable here means not so much a sublime beyond comprehension but rather the particularities of individual feelings.
