Abstract:

Tomlinson, Nora. "The achievement of Ford Madox Ford as editor." Thesis, Open University, 1996. http://oro.open.ac.uk/19038/.

Abstract:
This thesis challenges the conventional opinion that Ford Madox Ford was a great editor. It establishes criteria by which an editor can be judged; these are the literary and cultural opinions on which a review operates, an awareness of the needs of readers of a review as revealed in its style and content, and the way in which a review is managed. These criteria are applied to three different, though overlapping fields of enquiry. Firstly, the thesis examines how far Ford's editorial practice was consistent with his own literary and critical principles as expressed through a long and varied writing career. Secondly, it places the two reviews edited by Ford in the context of the society which produced them, English Review in London between 1908 and 1910, and The Transatlantic Review in Paris in 1924, and compares these two reviews with a wide range of contemporary cultural journals on the basis of the three criteria outlined above. Finally the study compares Ford's achievement as editor of The English Review and The Transatlantic Review. It concludes that while Ford was a good editor in some respects, he was not the great editor which is so often claimed for him.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study Ford Madox Ford, né Hueffer, in his various relations with France where he exiled himself since 1922 until the day of his death. The first part of this study (4 chapters) consists of an attempt to study the international review Ford founded and edited in Paris in 1924. The aim of this review which lasted 12 months, was to promote internationalism in the world of letters. Entitled the transatlantic review, it published french, english and american writers at a time where there was a large number of american expatriates in Paris. In the second part of this work, we investigate Ford's relations with Provence, this part of France where he lived for long stretches of time. It consists of three chapters, the first one of which is an analysis of the presence of Provence in Ford's best novel. The good soldier (1915). Follows a study of the type of vision Ford had of this part of France, as well as an analytical study of the place of Provence in the larger context of ford's vision of the world in which he lived

Abstract:
Ford Madox Ford held a major yet paradoxical stance within modernist. His relationship to his literary context is characterized by a vibration between the tribute to his artistic heritage and enthusiasm for the imperative of novelty mat defines modernism. The reluctance to inscribe Ford within the modernist canon may be explained by the difficulty to reconcile his work's contradictions and consequently to delineate a stable aesthetic System. Ambivalence is indeed at the core of the author's aesthetic project, particularly so in Parade's End. The tetralogy describes a contradictory relationship to its ideological, aesthetic and philosophical heritage and to the past; it initiates an irreconcilable dialectic between the ideal of a past inhabiting the present and the notion of newness that such nostalgia implies. The text conveys a reluctance to resolve the confusion it generates: it is thus impossible to establish a fixed line between the values of tradition and those of modernity. The fundamental dimension of negativity endows the text with a paradoxical dynamism. This work explores the tension between homage and derision that characterizes Parade's End, The nostalgia of a stable ideology, of a satisfyingly coherent narrative and of a subject that can be grasped as a whole, is simultaneously sublimated and derided. The crisis of ideological, aesthetic and ontological Systems of thought that is thus made blatant does not result in the development of an alternative System; it does not however lead to void either, but to lets us delineate a System that has yet to be created. The text is constantly moving towards an aesthetics whose contours are merely suggested

Abstract:
Ford Madox Ford is one of the most important figures, not only of English literature butof the Western European cultural and artistic world of the twentieth century. Closelyconnected with Henry James and Joseph Conrad (with whom he wrote three novels incollaboration), Ford played a vital role as editor, contributor to literary impression and aspioneer of “modernism”. Cosmopolitan by birth (English, German, French), this tirelessvoyager, torn between England, the United States and France (especially Provence, hischosen domain and Toulon), Ford is the author of a voluminous sum of publicationsmade up of more than 80 books and other items. The author of this thesis, Marine Bernot, has chosen to concentrate on a dozen or so memoirs covering the years going from 1904to 1937, focusing particularly on two travel ‘novels’, Provence and The Great TradeRoute. These works, which give an original insight into the first half of the twentiethcentury, introduce the reader to an original and complex personality – politicallyadvanced, feminist, non-conformist, ecologist ahead of his times, visionary –, a man inharmony with contemporary preoccupations

The notion of trauma is implicitly as well as explicitly the main theme of these six books. It is generally agreed that the trauma is not the prerogative of modern times, however, the trauma generated by the Great War is extraordinary. It is not restricted only to the battlefield but affected a whole society, mobilised behind the war effort. The case of Ford Madox Ford, née Hueffer is unique in the sense that he is the only writer who crossed the abyss that opened up between the two generations of writers, on the one hand, his, represented by Henry James, Bennett, Kipling, Wells, and all those who participated in the ideological cause, and the young disillusioned generation of writers (Robert Graves, Siegfried Sassoon, Richard Aldington, etc.) who were betrayed by those they called the Old – political leaders and writers. This work, bearing on socio-political, historical, theoretical and biographical arguments, attempts to examine the painful processes of reconstruction and consolidation of the Fordian impressionist technique and its author, ‘shell-shocked’ by the traumatic experience of war

Abstract:
This research is relevant to Ford since it is about the elaboration of a campaign for a new product in the market which functionalities are highly valued by the target audience and need to be noticed, in addition to the need of covering a commercial objective of sales. Therefore, the objective of this work is to develop two advertising campaign proposals, one ideal and the other one with a reduced budget, that would generate the sale of 150 units of the New Ford Edge in the second half of 2020. The field work consists of the selection of a homogeneous non-probabilistic sample of 49 men between the ages of 35 and 55. The research has a mixed focus and the applied instruments are standardized surveys and semi-structured interviews. From this, the following was obtained: first, the target audience has a double perception of Ford; secondly, the idea of an imposing and modern vehicle complements the image their targets want to project; and finally, the consumption practices seek to satisfy two needs: personal and social. Hence the proposition of a modern twist through its technology focused on safety, which allows Ford to renew itself and keep up with the latest trends without neglecting the trajectory that the brand endures.

Though they usually acknowledge that such novels as the good soldier (1915) and parade's end (1928) are masterpieces, the british have chosen to see in ford madox ford not a master, but a writer whose main claim to glory is that he was, at one time, conrad's collaborator. Over half a century, from 1891 until the year of his death, 1939, he published over eighty books, novels, essays, poetry, criticism and autobiographies. The study of his autobiographies - of which the english reader can only read excerpts - throws some light on ford's long standing alienation from any genuine critical appraisal in his own country

Abstract:
Ford Madox Ford is an impressionist writer who purports to be a historian of his own time and seems to represent modern life in a text conceived visually to make you see. He thus encourages a parallel between his writing and the nineteenth-century French painters’ art to be drawn ; yet he draws on a vast array of arts and aesthetics in his narratives to forge his impression according to his original and singular conception of art. That conception supports the artistic accumulation and association exercised in the novels while it shatters established aesthetic frameworks to merge arts and aesthetics in a form which adapts to reality to structure its formlessness and reveals it to offer an experience of it to the reader. In obeying pictorial and theatrical norms to be seen as pictures or in scenes, the narrative in fact discloses how modernity resists mimetic illusion. So painting and the theatre do not represent visibility but its loss, and the novels are forced by their object to embrace a thoroughly modern de-figuration which Fordian aesthetics endorses and the cinema realises. The latter then grants access to the vision of a fragmented and moving world totalled by the continuous metamorphosis of film, which besides encourages visual identification. However the cinema does not lead to the totalisation of the novel, nor to the dialog which the writer intends to have with his sympathetic reader in order to transfer his artwork onto him. That transfer does happen by means of the text and its structure but ultimately without figuration, through the music of the novel which at once governs, unites and abolishes representation, the arts and the text so the artwork be com-prehended

Abstract:
This thesis addresses the literary representation of food in the period from 1900 through 1945 in the work of Ford Madox Ford, Gertrude Stein and Virginia Woolf. Taking up nineteenth-century fascinations with sensual and aesthetic taste, these authors explore the implications of food preparation and consumption in Britain, America and France. They use representations of everyday culinary practices as a way to examine articulations of anxiety about the state of civilization, a fear that is amplified and altered by both World Wars. The thesis approaches the question of the significance of food to literary modernism in two ways. The first is a theoretical analysis of modernist ways of thinking about the dialectic between the concepts of civilization and barbarism. The second is grounded in material history, establishing the contexts and conditions of food culture in the first half of the twentieth century. Drawing on sociological thinking from Norbert Elias's conception of the civilizing process and Pierre Bourdieu's theory of distinction, and using a combined methodology of close reading, biographical and historical analysis, I show that food acts as a lens for these authors' ideas about civil society and modernity. My original contribution to knowledge is threefold. The first is my interpretation of 'culinary Impressionism' as an extension and repositioning of current scholarly thinking about Ford's literary Impressionism. The second is my reading of Stein's and Toklas's jointly-authored cookbook draft as evidence of their collaboration. This forms the crux of my argument about Stein adapting domestic culinary techniques into her other writing. The third is in my chapter on Virginia Woolf. My original archival research shows that in A Room of One's Own Woolf's representation of the financial and culinary difference between men's and women's dining in colleges at the University of Cambridge is justified and the material inequality was in fact worse than previously understood. I argue that the disparity in institutional food intensifies Woolf's later reimagining of the term 'civilization' in Three Guineas. While drawing on the work of modernist studies scholars on modernism and the everyday, civilization, and food, my project is unique in demonstrating that food reflects modernist conceptions of civilization and barbarism. My thesis contributes to the understanding of transatlantic aesthetics and gendered productions of modernism by illuminating the centrality of agriculture, cookery, domestic work and institutional dining to modernist authors.

The need to increase the value of the Ford brand, with the launch of its new model New Ford Edge, motivated us to research and propose a 360-campaign proposal. The main objective of the research is to communicate that the New Ford Edge model is perfect for the target; For this, our strategy is based on demonstrating that the Co-Pilot 360 function is a semi-automatic assistant that will make life easier for the driver, making him feel cool and recognized. To collect relevant information, instruments such as: interviews, surveys and social listening on social networks were used. As an agency, we propose a methodology focused on 6 important points: Exchange, Knowledge, Ideation, Prototype, Optimization and finally the Measurement stage. As a result of this methodology, we obtained an advertising strategy based on creativity and media planning. As for the creative proposal, we focus on the Co-Pilot 360 concept anticipating the unimaginable, which was reflected through messages with fictitious resources to exemplify cases of everyday life. Regarding media planning, we opted for the choice of innovative media related to the target. The relevance of this research work is based on the fact that more brands can implement a campaign strategy appropriate to the interests of the target audience.

In preparation for an upcoming EPA proposal regarding Free Oil & Grease (FOG) and metal ion content in wastewater effluent, a study was performed for Ford Motor Company that assesses various seconctary wastewater treatment technologies. The three water purification technologies, membrane filtration, biological treatment, and clay media adsorption, were evaluated as secondary water treatment solutions for oily wastewater. Three different types of membrane technologies were tested: polymeric, ceramic, and sintered stainless steel. In regards to FOG, the membrane technologies and the clay media were able to reduce FOG levels below the EPA proposal of 17 mg/L. However, the clay media did not show a strong affinity for metal ions. The membrane technologies were 'lble to reduce all iron levels below the recommended limits (1.3 mg/L). However, they were not able to reduce aluminum below the proposed limit (I mg/L). This implies that additional downstream processing would be required to remove the aluminum if the membrane solution was implemented and the regulation passes as proposed. The biological wastewater treatment was not tested during these trials, but was assumed to be able to meet all FOG and metal requirements proposed by the EPA. Based on these experimental results and basic design assumptions, an economic analysis over a ten-year period indicated that the biological waste treatment system was the lowest in costs, followed by the polymeric membranes. The estimated installed and operating costs for both technologies was $800,000 and $1,200,000 respectively. The nearest alternative solution, the stainless steel membranes, was over 200% more expensive than the lowest cost option. Based on this economic analysis, Ford should pursue additional research and experiments into the feasibility of using biological wastewater treatment to meet EPA proposed regulations. More specifically, experiments should be conducted to help verify the assumptions used and economic results obtained in this study. As a secondary option, in the absence of additional data, polymeric membranes are recommended as the best solution, despite additional processing needed to remove aluminum ions from water effluent. In addition, the biological waste treatment option has the potential to reduce chemical oxygen demand (COD) measurements below the levels seen by any of the membrane technologies. None of the membrane technologies investigated were capable of reducing COD levels below 200 mg/L on a consistent basis, thus indicating that this might be a fixed barrier for these technologies. Although not relevant today, COD measurements might have significant importance in future EPA water regulations, and should be taken into account when recommending a treatment solution.

Abstract:
Inarguably a major recording act, Tennessee Ernie Ford (1919-1991) sold an estimated 90 million albums worldwide, and charted 17 Top Ten country singles and four Top Ten pop singles over a 35-year recording career. And he played significant - and pioneering - roles in radio and television broadcasting. All the secular-themed studio recordings from the first dozen years in the career of one of the most important crossover acts in the history of American popular music. Five CDs containing 154 tracks and a 120-page book with newly written essays, track-by-track album notes, a discography, label scans, and many rare photographs and illustrations. Early country hits including the chart-topping Mule Train (1949) and Ford's pioneering 'hillbilly boogie' smash The Shotgun Boogie (1950), as well as Ford's first major crossover hit, the 1950 duet (with Kay Starr) I'll Never Be Free. It also includes classics such as Rock City Boogie (with the Dinning Sisters, 1951) and Blackberry Boogie (1952) as well as overlooked delights as the train song Tennessee Local (1952), his 1952 interpretation of Willie Mabon's rhythm and blues hit I Don't Know. This boxed set includes two never-before-released songs (Slow Down and Small World), numerous Ford singles and album tracks not previously reissued on CD, and several rarities, including Ford's 1955 recitations of Davy Crockett tales, as well as Ford's 1958 public service jingles to promote the U. Resumo: O modelo de Uhlenbeck-Ford, que é um sistema artificial caracterizado por um potencial interatômico logarítmico e repulsivo, foi definido originalmente para o estudo teórico de gases imperfeitos, baseado no fato de que todas as integrais de muitos corpos, envolvidas no cálculo de coeficientes viriais, podem ser calculadas analiticamente.
Abstract: The Uhlenbeck-Ford model, which is an artificial system characterized by a logarithmic and repulsive interatomic potential, was originally defined for the theoretical study of imperfect gases, based on the fact that all the many-body integrals, involved in calculating virial coefficients, can be calculated analytically. Thus, this model has an exact expression for the equation of state and the Helmholtz free energy in the fluid phase. A modified potential by a scale factor of this model was proposed as a reference system in the implementation of atomistic simulation methods for free energy calculation in the fluid phase. In this paper, we construct the phase diagram of the Uhlenbeck-Ford model dependent on a scale factor, finding the coexistence lines between fluid and solid phases, with crystalline structures (BCC and FCC). The stability of the different phases was studied by analyzing the free energy curves, which were obtained using the atomistic simulation technique of Molecular Dynamics, using nonequilibrium processes. Our results show that for any density, there exist regions in which the fluid phase is the most stable and therefore the Uhlenbeck-Ford model can be used as a reference system for free energy calculations of systems in the fluid phase

Abstract:
Drawing on extensive primary research into John Ford’s early films, from the silent era up until the late 1920s, the thesis charts the evolution of what has become known as the ‘Fordian sensibility’ through a close textual analysis of the director’s extant silent films, taking into account the implications of the auteur theory as applied to Ford’s work. A major part of the research process has been devoted to the appropriation of the director’s surviving early titles, in order that all existing film materials relevant to the thesis can be included. Prior to examining Ford’s silent film output, the thesis covers the evolution of the auteur theory, and the nature of the ‘Fordian sensibility’. This chapter also discusses key thematic and visual motifs that have been identified by various film scholars over the years, along with a number of other patterns discerned by the author of this thesis, through a close examination of all of Ford’s sound films, from The Black Watch (1929) through to 7 Women (1966). The main text of the thesis considers whether the identified key thematic and visual motifs can be detected in the director’s early work, and how these themes and motifs evolved chronologically into fully formed components of the ‘Fordian sensibility’. The four main chapters of the thesis cover the following periods: Pre-directing career 1914 – 1917; Apprenticeship at Universal 1917 – 1921; Early 1920s work at Fox 1921 – 1926; Late silent period at Fox 1927 – 1930. This examination of the director’s work analyses how John Ford, the man and the director, became ’John Ford’, the brand, and the label. Using the director’s early silent work as a case study, it questions how the idea of ‘authorship’ is formed and studies how Ford’s style and aesthetic evolved during the silent period due to the influence of other artists; biographical factors; technological innovations; and institutional, cultural and social issues.

Abstract:
My autobiographical novella covers a period of my life between 1974 and 1984, when I worked at the Ford Motor company Struandale Assembly plant in Port Elizabeth. This period predated the formation of NUMSA (the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa) and COSATU - it was a time when automobile industry workers broke away from the race- based unions to form MACWUSA (Motor Assemblers and Component Workers Union of SA). Around the same time Rev Leon Sullivan was putting pressure on US companies, including Ford, to move away from apartheid labour practices. As quite an angry young man influenced by the Black Consciousness movement, I got deeply involved in union activities mainly for my own survival, and as a personal reaction to racism in the workplace. The story is told in a realist style, with many anecdotal detours giving the flavour of life in New Brighton in the 1980s. Important influences have been Bloke Modisane's autobiography, Blame Me on History and Studs Terkel's interviews of Ford plant workers and management in his book Working.
Growing up in New Brighton gave me so many stories that had never been written before but that were told person to person by the residents of my neighbourhood. Some of the tales in this collection are based on such stories. Others are stories that are reminiscent of childhood while growing up with an elder brother. I take the inspiration from different books that are in line with the stories that I am writing: collections of Extreme Fiction - Fabulists and Formalists that were edited by Robin Hemley and Michael Martone and The Best Bizarro Fiction of the Decade edited by Jeremy Robert Johnson and Cameron Pierce. Some stories by L.L. Ngewu and L.S. Ngcangata, and a novellette by P.T. Mtuze, Alitshoni Lingaphumi, also bring much influence as they reveal suffering in the lives of black people who endured forced removals, and other situations that are of interest to build my stories on.

Abstract:
As a literary category, 'impressionism' has only recently begun to receive regular critical attention. Where impressionism is firmly enshrined in Art History, the term has often been thought redundant in literary criticism. Several scholars have attempted to define and defend impressionism as a literary phenomenon, and while the present study seeks also to bolster its status emphasising how it constitutes a crucial moment in the development of modern literature it also scrutinises the deeper implications of the aesthetic. It is, in addition, the first comprehensive exploration of the literary relationship between the fictional work of the four central exponents of literary impressionism in the English language: Joseph Conrad, Stephen Crane, Ford Madox Ford, and Henry James. Chapter One traces and summarises the aesthetic and cultural origins of literary impressionism. Chapter Two presents a working definition of impressionism, and considers the problems surrounding any such attempt. Chapter Three explores the unique and complex interaction between author, text and reader in impressionist fiction, and observes the potential contradictions involved. The moral and political capacity and alignment of the impressionist aesthetic are the subject of Chapter Four. Chapter Five examines the representations of, and implications for, identity, while Chapter Six develops the more radical implications of the fifth: investigating the consequences, opportunities and dangers of heightened subjectivity. The Conclusion locates the position and status of impressionism in literary history, looking beyond its relationship with modernism to anticipations of the theories and practices of our own time.

Abstract:
This work seeks to analyze the use of the emotional elements of storytelling associated with the product attribute to reinforce Ford's brand identity. We know that, in Peru, the offer in cars is very large, so each brand tries to communicate different things about its products, from tangible aspects of a car, to trying to give each one a personality. We also know that choosing a product like this is no longer very complicated, so brands must choose to communicate in a way that attracts the consumer and manages to reinforce their brand image. That is why storytelling becomes the best option. For this work we want to know if the association between storytelling and product attributes really reinforces the brand image, in this case of Ford. This is why, in the first place, we will analyze the concepts of each of the terms to be studied. We will start with the product attribute and continue with storytelling, branded content and brand image. In the same way, we will analyze the reason for the choice of the Ford Raptor make and model in the investigation. Finally, through fieldwork, studying the members of our target audience and professionals related to the case and the brand, we will discover if the association of storytelling and product attributes reinforces the image of the Ford brand.

Abstract:
Ford often wrote about virtuous gentlemen ruined by the modern society he saw developing around him. While Ford Madox Ford was writing The Good Soldier, ther was a sense of displacement in England and the class system was starting to crumble. Edward Ashburnham, one of the two male protagonists in The Good Soldier, is described as a Chevalier Bayard and there are definitely some similarities between Ashburnham and Bayard. For instance, both men lived during periods of great societal change and both faithfully served their countries. However, the feudal lifestyle that was appropriate for Bayard in the fifteenth-century is unavailable to Ashburnham in the twentieth-century. In The Good Soldier, Ford used the old ideals of chivalry and courtly love codes to produce a character, Edward Ashburnham, who represents the loss of traditional values in a modern society.

Abstract:
The author of this article wishes to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the première of Sergeant Rutledge, showing how interpersonal relation ships are developed in this film. He studies the ontology and gnoseology of the film, to understand how John Ford is a real classical poet from the perspective of Plato and Aristotle. The film is also a true philosophical myth which builds and transmits the so-called Poetics of Aristotle (1451b), "the Universal". This work of Ford is essential as a vehicle of an anti-racist and integrating view of Afro-Americans in USA, in the context of the civil right's figths of 50' and 60' decades of XX century.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, System Design & Management Program, 2000.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 78-80).
This thesis aims at developing a practical method to adjust product development metrics, which will enable effective management of the product development (PD) process. A set of good metrics is crucial to the success of a product, as metrics direct the development process by driving the actions and decisions of the PD team members which in turn define the product. Emphasizing or "weighting" certain metrics more than others can make the difference between success and failure. Through empirical exploration of metrics we seek to determine the weights, and the impact of different metrics on product success. Unlike its use in the engineering literature, the management use of the term "metric" includes both quantitative and qualitative measures which the PD team members can influence through their efforts. The theory used to determine the correct weight of a metric has its roots in the principles of Agency Theory and has been developed by "engineering" the theory to obtain two key parameters which define the weight of a metric. These two parameters are "leverage" and "risk discount factor" (RDF). Leverage is the amount by which a metric can impact the profitability of a product and RDF takes into account the inherent risk averse nature of the PD team members that influence their decisions. In order to evaluate the PD metrics and their weights within a firm, data was collected for a set of metrics across 17 programs at Ford Motor Company. The values for each metric were assigned based on information obtained through program documentation and interviews with multiple team members across various functions within the organization. Different success measures were collected and the impact and leverage of each metric was determined through empirical exploration of the various relationships. The key findings to date include: * Cronbach's Alpha for metrics regrouped using factor analysis average 0.7 demonstrating internal reliability. * Customer satisfaction correlates significantly with the rigor of the PD process, and internal coordination and communication between the core team and the other members of the value chain. * Time to market shows consistent correlation with profit and profit residuals. " The calculated weights suggest higher emphasis on capturing manufacturing need and using robust design practices, technology, and differentiation will increase profitability. " The measured RDF does not change the relative weightings of the metrics as obtained through the leverage calculation.

Torres, Blasido Madeley Fiorela, and Solís Diana Marycel Yacha.

Abstract:
The problems covered in this thesis are the number of unhealthy end garments and the delay of orders by the company under study. It’s known that SMEs contribute greatly to the development of the country, either with the contribution to PIB and the contribution of jobs. The SMEs of confections in Peru make up 59.6% of the companies; however, in recent years their growth has been affected by the problems they present, with informality being one of them. So, considering the role of such companies in the country, it is important to work on growth and development within a more competitive market. Therefore, it seeks to improve the processes of SMEs of tailoring in order to reduce its problems and improve its productivity. Therefore, after reviewing the literature, a basic management system is proposed, which will not only help to reduce problems, it will also allow them to strengthen themselves as an organization in order to consolidate themselves in the market being more competitive. The proposed system consists of 4 processes: order management, production planning and control, quality management, logistics management. The development of the document presents each of the processes with their respective components; validation of the proposal is also shown through indicators, where after having compared the values there is an increase in productivity from 37.5% to 83.3%.

Scaife, James. "Sedimentology and sedimentary geochemistry of the Eagle Ford Group, Texas." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2018. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:79a42ac1-1672-493b-9781-bfb07b21af9e.

Abstract:
The Eagle Ford Group is an organic-rich succession of rhythmically interbedded packstones and wackestones, deposited in the southern Western Interior Seaway during the Cenomanian-Turonian of the Upper Cretaceous. Recent investigations have suggested that either eustatic sea level change, astronomical forcings, change in primary productivity and dilution, or changes in local and global benthic oxygenation may be responsible for the Eagle Ford Groups lithological and geochemical variations. However, no consensus has yet been reached. Chapter 3 examines cm-scale geochemical, mineralogical and sedimentological changes to investigate the temporal and spatial variabilities of the Eagle Ford Group. This study suggests the stratigraphical cyclicity of the Eagle Ford Group is a function of alternating periods of high and low primary productivity and accumulation rates possibly modulated by the fertilizing effect of ash falls. Lateral variabilities are determined by the reworking of pelagic sediment by bottom currents, below storm wave base. Chapter 5 investigates changes in water-mass exchange, climate, water-column anoxia and hydrodynamics during the deposition of the Eagle Ford Group. The results of this study show four distinct stages in the deposition. The lowermost stratigraphic third of the Lower Eagle Ford was deposited under a humid climate with high continental runoff, anoxic/euxinic benthic conditions and exchange with a nutrient-rich water mass. The upper stratigraphic two thirds of the Lower Eagle Ford was deposited during a more arid climate, with lower continental runoff, a highly restricted anoxic benthic zone with some periods of euxinia, and little siliciclastic input. The lowermost stratigraphic half of the Upper Eagle Ford was deposited during a mostly humid climate with high continental runoff and the presence of a suboxic benthic zone that experienced multiple periods of oxygenation related to a more open water mass exchange. The upper stratigraphic half of the Upper Eagle Ford exhibits deposition under a more arid climate with lower continental runoff and reduced benthic oxygen content. Global controls, such as perturbations of the global carbon cycle, exert a fundamental role in the large-scale deposition of organic carbon. As such it is important to understand the effect and causes of global events when studying sedimentary systems. The Eagle Ford Group contains one such event Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE 2). However, the fundamental cause of OAE 2 is still poorly constrained. As such in Chapter 4 mercury concentrations are examined in sedimentary successions spanning the Mid-Cenomanian to Early Turonian interval. The data presented here are consistent with an initial magmatic pulse at the time of the MCE, with a second and greater, pulse at the onset of OAE 2, possibly related to the emplacement of LIPs in the Pacific Ocean and/or the High Arctic.

Adams, Pedro Duan. "An international marketing framework for Ford South Africa in Nigeria." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/3869.

Full text
Abstract:
Africa is seen as the last investment frontier and according to literature will have a GDP of $1.5 trillion by the year 2016 and a population that is double the size of Europe. The rapid expansion of infrastructure and construction in African countries, such as Mozambique and Zambia has increased the demand for commercial vehicles. This has sparked unparalleled marketing opportunities for automotive manufacturers and the continent is fast attracting major players in this sector. The international marketing literature still lacks detailed studies and research into the marketing deliberations and trades in Africa. Therefore, according literature a greater representation of African culture within the international marketing literature would provide relevance and richness in the global market place and offer greater insight to organisations who are seeking to invest and expand their businesses in Africa. The management issue here is to comprehend the diversity and vastness of this region and putting together all spheres to ensure growth and creating brand loyalty. The key challenge here is for management to be able to grasp and understand not only the various cultures but also the way of doing business in such a vastly different region. It is therefore imperative for Ford Motor Company to fully understand these factors so as to take full advantage associated with entering a market early which is commonly referred as first-mover-advantage. A case in point is when General Motors entered the Chinese automotive industry in 1997 when the Chinese market was relatively small. General Motors’ enthusiasm and commitment back in 1997 was driven by a belief that China would ultimately become an economic powerhouse and emerge as one of the world’s largest automotive markets. By the year 2010 China was one of the world’s biggest automotive markets and General Motors was a dominant force in this market. Africa has all the key elements for the growth and development of a robust automotive market. By studying past experiences and outcomes from empirical studies on international marketing with emphasis on the automotive industry, it will be possible to draw lessons and experience about the potential growth of the automotive sector on the African continent. This study will also be of great significance to other automotive manufacturers and suppliers looking to expand their business and market share across Africa due to the increase of the middle class. Therefore creative strategies and thinking of how to circumvent challenges in the African cultural environment, creativity in managing bureaucracy and due diligence about business and investment opportunities will uncover unprecedented volumes of profitable business that lies untapped on the African continent. Data from the quantitative study suggest that culture, political environment, country-of-origin, competition and country infrastructure in Nigeria, are essential factors to the development of a successful international marketing strategy for Ford South Africa. This study therefore concludes that Ford Motor Company of South Africa can utilize this framework in order to gain greater market share and ultimately success in Nigeria. Recommendations were also made for future research studies that can contribute to the international marketing literature with emphasis on the African market.

Gustafsson, Johan, and Carolina Lindahl. Thesis, Uppsala University, Department of Business Studies, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-7872.

Abstract:

Hawkes, Robert Bramwell. "Destabilising narratives: Characterising, plotting, and trusting in Ford Madox Ford's fiction." Thesis, University of York, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.487844.

Abstract:
This study examines the fiction of Ford Madox Ford (1873-1939) in relation fundamental structures and forces which shape narratives. It contends that Ford's novels contain, and attempt to contain, 'destabilising narratives' which frustrate, whilst simultaneously activating, the reader's desire for narrative coherence. The major contention of this study is that by reading Ford's novels as 'destabilising narratives' we stand to gain in our understanding both of Ford's writing and of narrative itself: the ways in which narratives function, the needs and desires they fulfil, and how they work on us as readers.
