Botrel, Yann. "Entre réel et imaginaire : la fonction du discours mélancolique." Rennes 2, 1999. http://www.theses.fr/1999REN20041.
Full textThe imaginary debarment concept caused by the loss of the maternel breast which rebates on narcissism, seems to me the foundation of melancholia. This concept conditions the identifying lapse of the mirror stage, the fantastical construction, and prepares a real life of castration. In agreement with freudian nosology, we debate phenomenology and psychiatry which classify melancholia in manic-depressive madness or psychosis, as it psycoanalysts adopting this classification. The melancolic subject seems marked by signifiant "breast", not by phallic signifiant. His language without ponctuation giving meaning attests. It's composed of methaphorical network, not a metonimycal connected speech. Then the last appeal is the symbolic which allows to put at distance an impossible Real without imaginative intermediary : though melancolic subject constructs a rigourous and formal language to restore Real meaning. We conclude our research with a talking cure test for its structure change, in order to specify transference and interpretation process. It's question to set the analysand in the presence of an anlyst couple, a "vacilllating listening ear" woman, a protagonis interpretation man. This new structure would allow the analysand to couply with oedipian relation then an identification speech covers

Full textDebates in the media oppose workers psychology against working conditions. A review of studies by sociologists of work shows that it is possible to articulate these opposing elements differently, based on various causalities: anomie, a deregulation that blurs the limits (Durkheim); a specific, meaningless company language (Gaulejac); a repression of thought (Dejours).Freud and Lacan are both readers of Marx. Freud makes him an adversary who disregards the death drive whilst Lacan pays him a strong homage, retracing in his footsteps the Hegelian dialectic of master and slave thanks to the paradigm of discourses. Two major concepts can be deduced from this: the master-signifier, which demonstrates the injunctive power of language, and the surplus-jouissance, the counterpart of the restrictions imposed on jouissance that Lacan makes the very principle of capitalism. However, science and the financialisation of contemporary economics pulverise the discourse, eradicating the subject in favour of accounting, removing any barrier to jouissance, which has become an inalienable right. The reign of numbers only allows us to think in terms of a continuity that unfolds ad infinitum (1 + 1 + 1 +…) and no longer of opposing elements (allowed / forbidden) that are likely to put limits on excess.Leaving a capitalist discourse supposes a new way of handling of the language. By making resonate the hitherto concealed jouissance, the psychoanalyst gives everyone a chance to reappropriate their own language and thereby to say no to always-more. The desire which arises creates a new social bond and makes it possible to think of an alternative political system to the globalized governance by numbers

Full textAfter a long introduction arguing that the notion of the "feminine" in contemporary french philosophical texts fulfills a specific philosophical function - namely, that of a schema in the kantian sense -, this thesis is divided into three parts. The first deals with plato's notion of the chora. Contrary to the interpretation of certain contemporary texts, posing the chora as a metaphysical hypostasis of democritean rythmos, i read this notion as the incipient conceptualization of a "spatium" or "exteriority" that not only thrawts ontological categories but confronts the french notion of difference (or differance) with its limit. . . And perhaps its necessary presupposition. The second part proposes a new interpretation of kant's "transcendental aesthetic", notably arguing that, for kant, space alone fulfills the ontological role attributed to pure intuition. This interpretation opens up a new understanding of transcendental schematism - and consequently, of the notion of difference/differance, given that kant's doctrine is, via heidegger, the most eminent influence on the french notion. The last section of this part develops a critique of the heideggerian interpretation and demonstrates the failure of heidegger's tentative to found pure intuition upon the imagination understood as pure temporality. The third part bears on the contemporary french philosophical project. It pays particular attention to both derrida's "repetition" of the heideggerian "auto-affection" and to his (successive) readings of the chora. Sustained analyses show the limitations of the new determination of a proto-temporal function, revealed as dependent upon a non-synthetic "spatiality", and argue derrida's rejection of the feminine/maternal connotations that plato ascribes to the chora to depend upon his "foreclusion" of an "outside" that proves irreducible to such a proto-temporal function

Full textThis thesis examines the role of art, in particular painting, and the coming into being of desire in occurence of psychosis. We deal with two female painters both suffering from schizophrenic psychosis. Both women, L. And R. , have painted for a common goal – to outbalance their mental suffering, to expose and finally pacify it. Starting from their biographies, the clinical examination and their work we develop different hypotheses. L. Has symbolized her psychotic episodes by painture. She imagined positive results of her brutal and shameless visions and has arrived at integrate them peacefully. R. Has reworked particular problems of her psychosis by her paintings. The choice of her motives is in close relationship with her clinical pathology, they start herefrom and treat it. Metaphorically speaking, she has traced back the psychological evolution of the fusion with her mother until the separation by the father to arrive at a symbolic maternity and in the end a rebirth by means of her paintings. It is as if in these paintings she had been able to live again the failings of her past and to pacify them. We claim it is the sinthome which plays here its role as the fourth circle of the Borromean knot as far as the father is concerned, who is reintroduced hereby. By the return of the forecluded father into the painting, both, R. And L. , are enabled to submit to the law of privation for they take into consideration the existence of the „Other“ in their work and refer to him in their language. The recognition of basic laws such as the law of privation, the law of castration and the ban of incest permits them to enter into the relationship with the „Other“ and gives them acces to the „desire“. Their paintings enable them to enter into the „female“, to accept privation, the separation from her mother and, in case of R. , to live a symbolic maternity. Their work pacifies the foreclusion of the „Name of the Father“ and enables „desire“, a desire which demands submission to privation and the symbolization of it

Full textAlthough castration-resistant prostate cancers no longer respond to anti-androgen therapies, the androgen receptor (AR) is still required to promote tumor survival. However, the signaling pathways downstream of AR that promote this survival are not well known. We recently identified an AR-dependent survival pathway whereby AR induction of integrin α6β1 and adhesion to laminin activates NF-κB/RelA signaling and Bcl-xL. This pathway acts in parallel with the PI3K/Akt pathway in Pten-null tumor cells such that combined inhibition of both PI3K and integrin α6β1 is required to effectively kill tumor cells adherent to laminin. However, PTEN-null castration-resistant tumors were not effectively killed by this combination. I discovered that BNIP3, a hypoxia-induced BH3-only, pro-mitophagic Bcl-2 family member, is induced by androgen in castration-resistant cells through integrin α6β1 and HIF1α. Furthermore, castration-resistant cells adherent to laminin were much more efficient at inducing autophagy in response to androgen. Androgen blocked the ability of the PI3K inhibitor PX866 to kill castration-resistant tumors, but this was reversed by loss of BNIP3. Although BNIP3 was dispensable for androgen-induced autophagy, its mitophagy function was required for BNIP3 to promote resistance to PX866. Thus, enhanced hypoxia signaling in cooperation with AR/α6β1/HIF1α signaling on laminin in castration-resistant cells drives the expression of BNIP3 and enhances autophagy, both of which contribute to PX866 resistance through induction of mitophagy.

Full textProstate cancer is the most common cancer in men worldwide and the third most common cause of cancer deaths in industrialized countries. First line systemic therapy for metastatic prostate cancer usually includes androgen-deprivation therapy using surgical or pharmacological castration. Metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) is considered incurable. Its treatment is usually based on the chemotherapy or androgen receptor pathway inhibitors (ARPIs) such as enzalutamide or abiraterone. Although ARPIs are initially effective in the majority of patients, up to 20% of patients do not benefit from them (primary resistance) and those in whom the treatment is effective eventually develop ARPI-resistant disease (secondary or acquired resistance). The mechanisms of resistance are multiple and extremely complex. Several studies have focused on primary resistance mechanisms, but there are very few studies focused on mechanisms of secondary resistance. Previous studies, a majority of which used preclinical models, suggested that alterations in the androgen receptor itself such as splice variants (particularly AR-V7) are associated with primary and secondary resistance. However, this biomarker is not used in routine practice. Activation of alternative signaling pathways may also be responsible for resistance. Additional mechanisms of resistance, although still poorly known and studied, include epigenetic modifications and activation of other transcription factors. The aim of this thesis was to study the mechanisms of resistance to the new ARPIs in patients with mCRPC. To do so, we developed a prospective study (MATCH-R) to collect tumor biopsies from patients treated with ARPIs. Exome and transcriptome sequencing were performed. The relationships between genomic alterations and the occurrence of resistance to ARPIs were analyzed. The results suggest that primary resistance to ARPIs results from the activation of several biological pathways including those related to (1) a reduction in AR pathway activity (2) activation of the epithelial-mesenchymal transition and stem cell program, and (3) activation of the Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway protein, suggesting a potential benefit of Hh pathway inhibition among patients with Hh activation. DNA abnormalities that may cause primary resistance have not yet been identified. Collection of multiple samples at the time of secondary resistance allowed characterization of the clonal evolution of these tumors, which essentially follows a "branching" evolutionary pattern with sequential acquisition of important new gene alterations (AR, PTEN, RB1). Transcriptome analysis shows the activation of signaling pathways involved in cell proliferation and pathways leading to neuroendocrine differentiation. Further research is needed to validate these results in independent studies at the mCRPC stage or at earlier stages given the earlier use of ARPIs, particularly in the situation of hormone-sensitive prostate cancer.Ongoing work is underway in the laboratory with preclinical experimental models to functionally validate the potential value of Hh inhibitors that are already used in the treatment of other cancer in order to develop targeted therapeutic options

Full textIn this thesis we examine the consequences of the latter Lacanian teachings on the forclosure of the Name-of-the-Father. With this concept, Lacan designates in 1958, “the default that gives psychosis its essential condition, along with the structure that differentiates it to neurosis”. However in 1958 for Lacan the Name-of-the-Father is the Other of the law, the Other of the Other. In the latter Lacanian teachings the status of the Other changes, it becomes barred and with it, the Name-of-the-Father as supporting the law comes into question. It is pluralized, it becomes substitutable in its function, which is no other than the naming function. Thus, we pass beyond Oedipus and the Name-of-the-Father is reduced to a function of naming the Real. It is a sinthome linking the Symbolic, the Imaginary and the Real. Therefore the concept of forclosure shifts as well. On the one hand the generalized forclosure -structural foreclosure- designates the hole with which everyone is confronted. On the other hand the limited foreclose -psychotic forclosure- designates either the untying of the Borromean knot or a knot that is not Borromean. The fact that the Name-of-the-Father can be substituted in its function has clinical consequences as well. The non-standard versions of the Name-of-the-Father lead several psychotic subjects to hold fast in this world without the traditional support of the Name-of-the-Father and without exhibiting explicit troubles. The ordinary psychosis constitutes the major clinical consequence. Thus with the help of some clinical cases we examine this clinical entity that does not present undoubtable psychotic phenomena but has nothing neurotic either

Full textSurgical castration of pigs is practiced in commercial farms to avoid the release of unpleasant odours during meat cooking. This method is very painful and criticized for welfare reasons. Rearing entire males and immunocastration (vaccination against GnRH with Improvac®) are alternatives. However, sex hormones are involved in the regulation of the immune system and of the systems involved in the stress response. Thus, it is necessary to determine the effects of those techniques in pigs before generalizing them. In our study, we have compared entire male pigs with immunocastrated (= late removal of sex hormones due to 2 injections of Improvac at 3 and 4 months of age) and with surgically castrated pigs during the neonatal period (= early removal of sex hormones). We demonstrated that the effects of neonatal surgical castration were greater than those of immunocastration, suggesting that the presence of sex steroids during the neonatal period is essential. Surgical castration decreased the number of total leukocytes,in particular of lymphocytes T and thymic weight in adulthood whereas the maturation of thymocyte subsets was not altered. Our results indicated that the inflammatory response after an LPS injection was not affected neither by neonatal surgical castration nor by immunocastration whereas cortisol secretion was increased in surgically castrated animals. Overall, removing sex hormones in male pigs hadmore profound when it occurredearly in life but, even in this case, the effects on the immune system and on the stress response systems seemed minor

Castration and dehorning are common husbandry practices in the United States. The objective of this research was to evaluate behavioral responses to these painful procedures. Two studies were conducted using three dimensional accelerometers to measure behavioral differences in cattle following dehorning and castration. The first study evaluated the potential of different analgesics to mitigate pain following castration and dehorning compared to negative controls as judged by behavioral measures. Holstein-Fresian calves given one of three different analgesic protocols (sodium salicylate, a combination of xylazine, ketamine and butorphanol, and both treatments together) or received no analgesia. All cattle were surgically castrated and dehorned. All treatment groups spent more time lying down and less time walking in the post-surgery than pre-surgery, and significant interactions were found between treatment and time relative to surgery (P<0.05). The second study evaluated behavioral changes following castration and dehorning performed independently or concurrently when compared to a negative control (no surgery). Accelerometers recorded behavior in Holstein-Fresian calves in which differing surgical procedures were performed: castration only (CO), dehorning only (DO), castration and dehorning (CD), and no surgical procedure performed (CON). Behavioral data was measured for 6 days following surgery. Significant interactions were found between treatment and time (P<0.05) in both walking and lying behavior. Calves that were dehorned and castrated spent less time walking one day after the procedure compared to controls, but very few other behavioral differences were identified. These studies illustrate that cattle behavior changes following painful procedures such as castration and dehorning.

Full textThe thesis of this dissertaton is the progressive rejection of violence as a political instrument of the working class or implemented in its name in France and Italy. Paradoxically this rejection occurrs in a period of aggravation of social conflits and of the resurgence of the revolutionary mythos : the late 1960's. The choice of the term 'forclosure" to designate this endogenous phenomenon in violence prone groups reflects the concern - in Elias' perspective - to conjointly analyse the macro-structural factors tending towards pacification and the effect of these factors on the psychic economy. From this standpoint, two major modalities were outlined for each of the groups under study, workers and ultra-left militants. (1) integrative logics created by trade union mobilisations and made possible by the institutionnalisation of conflicts, favouring the internalisation of dominant norms and values, and social control of workers by trade union representatives in particular through their security contingent. Hence the regulation of orkers' violence and its ritualisation. (2) the marginalising logic of revolutionary action induces a progressive tightening of the space available for protest which from 1968 on was characterised by the

Full textWe examine vertical foreclosure in two different contexts : first, in the context of national competition policy, and secondly in an international one. The first part presents the main argument used by american antitrust authorities around 1950 to condemn vertical contracts : foreclosure. We present the evolution in the economic literature from the origin of the + naive ; theory to the current period. The criticisms made by major authors and their theoretical papers (whose purpose is to rebuild the new foreclosure theory) show the impact of research on changes in competition laws about vertical contracts. Nevertheless, the analysis of the impact of vertical contracts on competition provides no satisfactory results. Furthermore, we focus on a relatively little-emphasized aspect of the question : the analysis of the profitability of foreclosure. In the context of vertically related industries (with perfectly competitive upstream firms and two downstream firms), when a downstream firm implements a technological innovation (enforced in its upstream division), we show that the vertically integrated firm doesn't automatically foreclose its rival. More, we analyze simultaneously the trade strategy and its implications on consumers. We can show that foreclosure can enhance consumer surplus when this practice allows the innovative firm to exclude its rival because of its inefficiency. The second part deals with the international context. International foreclosure can be seen as an element of trade policy. It can only be justified by the existence of a cost differential between countries in a particular segment when the two countries are competitors on a adjacent segment. Foreclosure can be initiated by firms themselves or by governments. We present some of the main elements that justify why firms foreclose their foreign rivals. Among them, the nature of the supply costs is essentially analyzed. In a theoretical framework in which the upstream market is segmented while the downstream market is internationally integrated, we show that the foreclosure decision is independent of the cost advantage between downstream firms. Moreover when the cost advantage of an upstream firm becomes endogenous, then technology policy and foreclosure are complements

Full textThe artistic or scientific production in psychosis it's an attempt essai to solve or a way to make with the disruption of the real, thats a consequence of the foreclosure of the Name-of-the Father. Writing as a support of the realm of the real allows the psychotic to fabricate a sinthome as a suppleance as a foreclosure of the Name-of-the Father, what does this means it's making a name and he is the author. This clinical study it's based of the psychoanalitical postulates about: writing, the sinthome and psychosis and therefore be able to question the sinthome formation of three inventors two of them are mathematiciens (Cantor and Nash) and the third one a writter (Virginia Woolf. ) For all three of them, the invention is the price of the triggering off their psychosis. The invention doesn't always implics the formation of a sinthome. Therefore this research pointed the paradoxal elements of the suppleance by the sinthome: the impossibilité to go beyond of the Name-of-the-Father, the melancholy and the feminine otherness

Full textSince the description made by Leo Kanner in 1943, the early infantile autism remains more or less inalterable in his main latest classifications, as well as in different publications over the subject. The Jacques Lacan’s theory considers the autism as a subjective position that concerns a choice of the subject. Reintroduce the subject means then to introduce the question of the subjective responsibility. We owe to Eric Laurent the proposal according to which, in the autism, there is a return of enjoyment in an edge. He distinguishes this way of return of enjoyment correlative to the foreclosure: on the Other for the paranoiac and in the body for the schizophrenic. From there the idea of another nature of return of enjoyment related with the foreclosure that would be specific of the autism: in an edge. The question is then: is about the return of enjoyment related with the psychotic foreclosure ? Or rather this particular mode of enjoyment return is correlated with another modality of the foreclosure ? This is exactly what our thesis try to elucidate: which is the specific item of the foreclosure in the early infantile autism ? For questioning this specification of the foreclosure in the autism, we will attack the differential clinic of autism and childhood psychosis beginning from the age of appearance of the first disorders: at the beginning of the life in the case of autism and, in the case of the childhood psychosis, after a period of normal development. These two chronological times will be right away related with the two logic times involved in the algorithm of the metaphor of the Name-of-the-Father, for drawing out finally two different characters of the foreclosure, specific to the autism and to the childhood psychosis respectively

Full textEach individual has to face its dependence towards the "parlêtre" and the "subject of desire". The symptom that reveals its dependence is painful, and can sometimes overwhelms the subject by projecting him in an abysm of destabilizing reality. How can we help people finding meaning to this dependence now revealed and its painful symptom? Is there an ideal way to take action towards this dependence? What can be done with this reality? The psychoanalytic model, with the transfer/against transfer experience, gives an answer and a possible way to overcome the issue. In this thesis, clues will be given so that one can overcome the dependence and its inherent reality. Lacan tells us that at the end of the analyses, it can be a new link with the symptom, link which consists of admitting the "enjoy" which found the "be", that is to say to assume the fact that the dependence exists which makes the symptom pure. The individual will have a different opinion. He will continue on going forward, well established in his environment with a new consciousness. Some studies suggest that human being has not external goal in relation to himself: he would be his own goal. However the female positioning may open a new way offering the subject to the elusive infinity that we are always able to glimpse but not to grasp. Maître Eckhart illustrates it, showing the lack as a way of freedom and achievement in the suffering situation. The subject, free from his own castration will try again and again to catch a piece of real without ever getting rid of it

Full textIntroduction: From a practice clinic with men undergone to the surgical amputation of the penis (penectomy), some questions arose and resulted, initially, in our Master research in Psychology. Some of the findings helped us to formulate our PhD research problem, which can be resumed in the following question: “What is a man?”. We have observed in the patients discourse that the psychological suffering is not only due to the body modification but also to the necessity of facing the reality of the amputation through the construction of new answers to the question of what a man is, in special, a man without the penis. General objective: To contribute to the debate on the masculinity in the psychoanalysis, from the discourse of men undergone to the penectomy, as well as the psychoanalytic theorizations about the masculinity. Specific objectives: (1) to identify in Freud’s and Lacan’s work, in addition to other contemporaneous authors, the elements that allow us to think the masculinity in a psychoanalytic perspective; (2) to understand, from our research subjects discourse, the penile amputation impact on the masculinity; (3) to verify the new support points, if they do exist, to the patients masculinity in the absence of the penis. Methodology: Initially, we searched and discussed on Freud’s and Lacan’s work the necessary elements to a psychoanalytic reflection about the masculinity. Next, we retook the interviews made at the time of our Master in Psychology research in order to verify what they could teach us in regard to the transformations occurred in the masculinity when it loses the its penile support. We worked on the interviews with the viewpoint of the relationship that each of our subjects sets up with the significant. Therefore, the decryption of the arisen significants took into account the unconscious dimension, which commands the discourse of the significant chain. Results: (1) In Freud’s work, the masculinity is closer to a defensive construction against the feminization regarding to the father, what implies the castration; (2) The last teaching of Lacan allows us to consider the masculinity as a singular creation facing the impossible of signifying concerning to the sexed being;(3) The subjects’ resistances in following the medical discourse prescriptions on how to satisfy a woman after the penectomy are due to the incompatibility of these injunctions and the semblances that have always served as anchor points to these subjects’ virile image; (4) after the surgery, new significants, such as “the gentle man” and “the family protector”, take part in the psychological reconstruction work of the virile image. Final considerations: We expect that our research may contribute to the enrichment of the debate on what being a man is, as well as to an in-depth comprehension of the masculinity by both the psychoanalysts and the health professionals that deal with men in general and in particular with those undergone on the penectomy

Full textThe question of space has always interested philosophers, but also psychoanalysts, in particular Freud, Winnicott, and Lacan. The space is a question which concerns directly the treatment: for example, it is difficult to seize the nature of the space which separates the analyst and the analyser him/herself. It is not the dimension of the discursive intersubjectivity —where there is structurally a distance, a regular and constant distance— which is at stake. In analysis, the distance nullifies and imposes itself, in a continuous and paradoxical movement: enter in the life of the other, while staying outside. It is necessary "to be there", situation which is not obvious. To be there in a physical and psychic meaning, in a spatial meaning. Presence. A presence which is not simply given by the occupation of a place: space is place, but it is also something else. It is the opening —possibility, meeting, connection. . . —appearing in the human experience. In psychoanalysis, the space loses its geometrical coordinates; it is not reduced any more to its measure. Psychoanalysis in its theory as in its practice (in particular in the clinic of psychoses) finds new forms to apprehend spatiality. The question on the space favours a fertile interrogation —transversal— from a metapsychological and psychopathological point of view. The notions of "dislocation", "demolition", "disorder", "multiplicity", "chaos" will be approached here, in particular in the clinic of psychoses

Full textThis study aims at a revision of the sexuation logic within the modern psychoanalytical clinic. The Freudian thesis on the "primacy of phallus" was initially assumed by Lacan as a sexuated logic "to be or to have" a phallus, and it kept its importance in his later works, it was especially developed in his XX Seminar "Encore" in the table of sexuation. We have demonstrated that as far as the table of sexuation refers to the phallus, described in terms of the phallic function, that continues to be the only signifier of the difference between the sexes, we can hardly apply it to studying some of the particularities of the modern modes of sexuation. On the contrary we suggest that Lacan’s thesis that "the sexuated being is authorized only by himself [...] and by some others" remains valid as far as the becoming of the modern subject is concerned and it is brought to the forefront in the last teaching of Lacan through his study of the "talking being" in terms of knotting and suppliances. Therefore we have chosen the study of the the clinic of the push-to-be-the-woman and that of transsexual women in order to demonstrate that psychoanalysis oriented by the last teaching of Lacan gives us the possibility to reconsider these two clinics of sexual identity disorders in terms of modes of auto-authorization as sexuated. Via our clinical cases we suggest that these subjects left out of the possibility to appeal to the phallic signifiers "for everybody", try nevertheless to find their sintomatic way to join the common sexual discourse without the reference of the sexual binaries
