Alexander Forbes became the very first Tractarian bishop when he was consecrated Bishop of Brechin in the Scottish Episcopal Church in 1847. Consequently, he is an important historical figure in the history of the nineteenth-century Catholic revival and the Scottish Episcopal Church. Forbes was a leading example to many Tractarians and Anglo-Catholics in the Episcopal Church, and in the Church of England. He also became well-known to various Roman Catholic Churchmen in Europe through his work for Catholic reunion in the 1860's. As bishop and also incumbent of the Episcopalian congregation in the newly industrialized and urbanized Dundee, Forbes developed a Tractarian slum ministry unique among Anglican bishops in Britain. It was the influence of the Oxford Movement during the early 1840's that directed Forbes' social commitment towards the labouring poor, coupled with his inherited Tory paternalism. The Oxford Movement also imparted to Forbes a strong belief in the importance of dogmatic theology, which he believed to be a remedy for the Church against the religious doubt and secularism of the mid-Victorian period. In 1857, the Tractarian dogmatics of his primary charge initiated the eucharistic controversy within the Episcopal Church and divided Episcopalian High Churchmen and Tractarians. In 1860, failure to condemn Forbes at his heresy trial permitted Tractarianism to continue to be propagated within the Episcopal Church. Between 1862 and 1864, Forbes' leadership in his own Church was broadened by his campaign to retain the native Scottish Communion Office. By this campaign, Forbes opposed some of the major elements of anglicization in the Episcopal Church, and reunited Tractarians and northern Episcopal High Churchmen in defence of the Office.

This thesis describes patterns of variation in several cone, seed and seedling characteristics of Pacific silver fir (Abies amabilis [Doug.] Forbes) sampled from Vancouver Island, B.C. Cone collections kept separate by tree were made at eight locations during the fall of 1983 to provide material for the study.
The inheritance patterns of 13 enzyme loci were determined from seed tissues of 87 trees, and seven loci were found to possess at least two allozyme variants. These loci conformed to the assumptions of Mendelian-type inheritance, although AAT-2 displayed marked segregation distortion. No linkage groups could be established at the sampling intensity available (20 seeds per tree). Significant levels of inbreeding, based on a multilocus estimate of outcrossing, were detected in five of seven populations and indirect evidence suggests related matings other than selfing may be occurring. Variation among populations in outcrossing rate was evident (0.725 < tm ≤ 1.0) and appears positively correlated with seed size (measured by 1000-seed weight). High levels of allozyme variation were found to exist within populations (95-98%) and estimates of the extent of population differentiation were shown to differ depending upon the particular analytic method employed. Maternal (extant) trees appeared more heterozygous than did viable embryos and
populations sampled on southern Vancouver Island appeared more genetically diverse than did populations sampled on northern Vancouver Island.
A sub-sample consisting of two populations, each with seven trees, from northern, mid and southern Vancouver Island provided material for a germination test and open-pollinated progeny study. Seed dormancy was not pronounced among populations. Large family differences in germination responses were detected, irrespective of pregermination treatment, suggesting a high degree of genetic control of germination in Pacific silver fir. Anomalous germination behavior in one population was attributed to sub-optimal stratification conditions and proliferation of mold. Improvement in production of seedlings of Pacific silver fir may be achieved by collecting and germinating seeds on a family-by-family basis.
Germinants from the first count of the germination test provided open-pollinated progeny for measurement of growth variables. Seedlings were grown in a greenhouse alongside production Abies stock for 29 weeks. Population differences accounted for a considerable part of variance in cone and seed size. The effect of population on height of seedlings at eight weeks was significant but declined to virtually zero by the end of the test. Populations had negligible influence on growth rate of seedlings as well. Variation in growth rate among open-pollinated families was statistically
significant but accounted for only 20% of the total variation. Significant population differences were detected in root weight of harvested seedlings. Family differences in this and other biomass variables were at most 20%, with the majority of variation in seedling growth traits residing within families.<br>Forestry, Faculty of<br>Graduate

John Forbes White's contribution to the history of Art in Scotland was, for the first seventy years after his death, mentioned only in passing by the main writers on Scottish art of the day. However, two of his daughters, Ina Mary Harrower and Dorothea Fyfe, both wrote articles on aspects of their father's collecting: Ina publishing "Private Picture Galleries, The Collection of John Forbes White" in Goodwords in 1896 (pp 813-819), John Forbes White (Edinburgh) in 1918 and in 1927, "Jozef lsraels and his Aberdeen Friend" for the Aberdeen University Review (pp 108-122). A noted art historian, Ina reflected her father's taste and collecting interests in her own writings, as with, for example, "Studies of Fruit by Courbet" Apollo (Vol. L No 296 1949 pp 95-98). Dorothea, with her co-author C.S. Minto, published John Forbes White, Miller, Collector, Photographer 1831-1904 (Edinburgh 1970). The only other writers who have examined White's contribution to art in any detail were Charles Carter, who as curator of Aberdeen Art Gallery, covered art and patronage in the North-East of Scotland in numerous articles and outlined White's contribution in "Art Patronage in Scotland: John Forbes White" published in the Scottish Art Review,(Vol VI, no 2, 1957, pp. 27-30). Frances Fowle, on completion of her PhD on Alexander Reid, also discussed White's tastes in "The Hague School and the Scots, A Taste for Dutch Pictures" (Apollo August 1991 pp 108-111). George Reid was still less favoured by critics after his death. With J.L. Caw championing James Guthrie and William MacTaggart, the innovative and influential aspects of Reid's art were obscured, reduced and even sometimes credited to others. W.D. McKay in The Scottish School of Painting (London 1906) had played down Reid's part in the introduction of Realism into Scotland and Agnes McKay in her monograph on Arthur Melville (Lee on Sea, 1951) went furthest of all in portraying Reid as the enemy of a younger, more innovative group of artists, who included the subject of her book. It was to be another thirty years before Dun can Macmillan would examine Reid, in Scottish Art 1460-1990 (Mainstream, 1990) as an important landscape painter, rather than, as had been the case before, as a reactionary president of the Royal Scottish Academy and an extremely dull, if talented, portrait painter. One year later John Morrison, having completed his PhD Rural Nostalgia: Painting in XIX Scotland c.1860-1880 (St Andrews 1989) wrote of Reid's important European contacts and of the vital relationship between White and Reid in "Sir George Reid in Holland, his work with G.A. Mollinger and Jozef Israels" (Jong Holland 1991 No 4 pp 10-19). Both the assets and the faults of Alexander Macdonald's collecting were examined by Charles Carter in "Alexander Macdonald 1837-1884 - Aberdeen Art Collector" (Scottish Art Review, Vol V, no 3, 1955, pp. 23-28) and again by Francina Irwin in an exhibition catalogue entitled Alexander Macdonald: From Mason to Maecenas in 1985. My main source of material has come from the uncatalogued archive of correspondence between George Reid, John Forbes White, Jozef Israels, George Paul Chalmers, David Artz, Gerrit Mollinger, Samuel Smiles and others, most of which is housed in Aberdeen Art Gallery. Reid's unpublished autobiography, transcribed by his wife Mia, (in the same archive) was also of great use, as was an unpublished but almost complete catalogue raisonne of Reid's work, compiled, probably by Percy Bate or Harry Townend c.1912. I have also made extensive use of the papers of James Pittendrigh Macgillivray which are held by The National Library of Scotland. The descendants of John Forbes White made the works and letters in their possession freely available to me. These included the correspondence between John Forbes White and William Stott of Oldham which is cited in Chapter 6. Elements of this thesis, and particularly sections 2,3, & 4 of Chapter 4, appeared in a revised form in "Art and Patronage in Aberdeen 1860-1920", a paper that I delivered at the Scottish Society of Art History's conference on Patronage, and which was published in The Journal of the Scottish Society for Art Historians (Volume 3 1998 pp 16-24). The sixth section of Chapter 5 appeared in a revised form, in An Album of Photographs compiled by Sir John Everett Millais PRA published in Studies in Photography (Edinburgh, 1997). The discussion of the influence of Ancient Greece and Classicism in the eighth section of Chapter 7 was included in a paper entitled John Forbes White, The Classical Tradition and Ideals In Art given at the conference on "The Role of Collections In The Scottish Cultural Tradition", which was held at Aberdeen University in 1998. The third section of Chapter 7 appeared in a revised form in Robert Brough (Aberdeen Art Gallery, 1995). Appendix A contains relevant excerpts from letters and text, on which much of my research was based whilst Appendix B lists the works of art owned by John Forbes White.

Xbox One är en spelkonsol från företaget Microsoft och en uppföljare till Xbox 360. Konsolen presenterades officiellt vid en presskonferens den 21 maj 2013 och före presentationen så fanns det ett av många rykten om ett krav på att vara ständigt uppkopplad mot internet som rapporterades i media. Syftet med uppsatsen har varit att i utifrån efterförloppet av Microsofts premiärlansering av spelkonsolen Xbox One undersöka den diskursiva bild som nyhetsmedierna Forbes och Time använder för att skildra och rama in Xbox One under den första månaden efter produktens lansering. Vår frågeställning har varit: – Hur framställer Time och Forbes information om Xbox One, och ramar in detta under tidsperioden 21 maj – 21 juni 2013? Denna uppsats har utgått från teori om mediekonvergens som beskriver att konvergens förändrar relationen mellan existerande teknologier, industrier, marknader och publiker. För att nå ett resultat så har en diskursiv analys gjorts i nämnda nyhetsmedier utifrån Teun A. van Dijk och hans makro- och mikroperspektiv på en strukturell nivå inom den kritiska diskursanalysen.I resultatet framkom sju stycken huvudteman som vi valt att kalla mediesystem, DRM, övervakning/privacy, Xbox One som marknadsföringsverktyg, ekonomi, PR och policyförändring. Studiens resultat pekar i en riktning där begrepp som ägandeskap, övervakning, digitalisering av upphovsrättsligt material, konvergens, makt och kultur som en kommersiell vara existerar, och berör områden inom medie- och kommunikationsvetenskap där en digital konvergens skett som gjort spelkonsoler till ett multimedialt medium. I en överblick över samtliga artiklar analyserade utifrån ett framingperspektiv, och utifrån problemdefinitionen, så framkommer det att de två största inramade problemen är kring kommunikation och internet och de övergripande moraliska utvärderingarna under temat internet är att konsumenterna drabbas negativt av Microsofts policy kring Xbox Ones uppkopplingskrav mot internet.

The aim of this master thesis is to analyze the development of capital flows within the euro area and within selected Member States, with respect to the hypothesis of a sufficient replacement of private capital flows with official ones. Verification of the hypothesis is based on identifying sudden changes in capital flows, using the model created by Mr.Forbes and Mr.Warnock. The entire work is conceived into three main chapters. The first is dedicated to the development of the crisis in the euro area and the adoption of important reform measures as response to the resulting unfavorable situation. The second chapter deals with the definition of net and gross capital flows and their development in the so-called extra-area flows. The final section is focused on the analysis of intra-area capital flows and flows in selected member countries.

In such publication, the authors affirmed that the managerial accounting instruments were no longer suitable to the management and control of organizations. In March 1998, the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) disclosed a work that described the activity known as Managerial Accounting, identifying four evolution steps in Managerial Accounting development and classifying some instruments generic expression for tools, management models and systems among these steps. The instruments belonging to the fourth step were considered as contemporary. In this scenario, this dissertation is a survey and has as basis the following research problem: The companies appearing in the list of the world‟s 2.000 largest companies, according to criteria of Forbes magazine eletronics, use contemporary managerial accounting instruments. Using such instruments is determinant for superior economic-financial performance? This work has as purposes: (1) to evidence how much the world‟s 2.000 largest companies (year of 2008) make use of contemporary managerial accounting instruments; (2) to verify whether the companies that use such instruments have superior performance over companies that use conventional instruments. The theoretical basis presents a brief description of the instruments and studies previously carried out. The information was obtained through a questionnaire sent to the companies‟ electronic addresses during the month of April 2010. The quantitative tests applied to the data were those of independent samples average significance. It was evidenced that: (1) 55.3% of the companies of the sample use contemporary managerial accounting instruments; (2) the companies that make use of such instruments do not present any higher performance over the companies that do not use them. Os instrumentos pertencentes ao quarto estágio foram considerados contemporâneos. Because of technological advances and the blurring of boundaries, the world is becoming a global community. Global communications have made it essential for multinational corporations to develop and maintain a consistent worldwide identity and brand image. It is no longer possible to classify people into simple and stable segments of customers; the world is evolving and so is the population. The purpose of this research is to bridge the gap between the academic and professional world of international public relations by expanding the stream of literature and incorporating a global aspect. Within the last few years, social media has seen a dramatic increase of users around the world. Companies realize the importance of becoming a part of this generational trend, yet they do not understand the reasoning behind it, and, thus, do not develop a strategy for using social media to build relationships. Using content analysis, this study expanded on the stream of relationship management theory and social media literature by adding a global element. Results suggest that global companies are beginning to utilize the dialogic principles of information dissemination, disclosure, and interactivity/involvement. Additionally, strategizing Facebook post messages to have a customer focus (i.e., asking questions, posting multimedia, providing company information) will yield greater feedback and interaction.

The objective of this research was to investigate the perceptions and experiences of educators and Grade 6 and 7 learners on the effectiveness of school rules at public primary schools within the Fezile Dabi school district. Chapter Two of this dissertation focused on the specific identification of what effective school rules comprise of, as perceived by the academic community. In order to provide the reader with an overview of the nature of effective school rules, this chapter was divided into providing a short historical reflection on discipline, looking at the nature of discipline, developing a South African framework for legal school rules and taking note of international and foreign law relevant to the topic of this dissertation. The researcher then discussed the outlines of the research design used to collect, edit and analyse the data in Chapter Three. The chapter included the research paradigm, and the difference between research designs was highlighted to motivate the choice for the research design. The research design chosen for this study was a quantitative design. The researcher also indicated that she used a pilot study while conducting the empirical research of this dissertation. It was followed by the data collection method and the data collection strategies were discussed. Reliability and validity were dealt with and the guarantees thereof included. The chapter negotiated ethical considerations and ended with a discussion of foreseen research challenges. The data were extrapolated from questionnaires. This study was conducted at 6 primary schools in the smaller Metsimaholo district. Learner participants (n = 421), as well as educator participants (n = 54), were selected to answer the same/similar questions on the effectiveness and experiences concerning school rules so as to enable comparisons of learners and educators’ perceptions of learner misconduct. The data were analysed and interpreted. Learner responses were used to determine the factor analysis, after which the same factors were applied for educators. The empirical study led to the following findings: • According to this study, it appears that educators with more experience than the average educator do not necessarily have command of content on the contemporary approach to dealing with learner discipline, which may contribute to learner misconduct. • According to the responses of participants, it seems that the role players are not aware of their influence on one another in terms of learner misconduct. *Educators are not aware of the influence of gang activities on learners. *Educators are not aware of the high prevalence of abuse within their school communities. *Learners are not aware of the educators’ concerns for the influence of family structures and divorces. *Educators feel that they are not respected by parents. • Learners acknowledge that they have less control over and input into the drawing up of school rules, than educators are willing to admit. • Some learners indicate that educators turn to illegal forms of punishment in a desperate attempt to maintain discipline.<br>MEd, North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2012

The effects of temperature on emergence, development, oviposition, longevity and fecundity of <i>Cotesia orobenae</i> Forbes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) were studied. Development time of parasitoid pupae decreased as temperature increased to 35°C. Temperatures between 20 and 25°C were most suitable for parasitoid development, oviposition and fecundity. Longevity was significantly affected by temperature, and was greatest between I5 and 20°C for both sexes.
Sex ratios obtained from virgin females, females mated once and females exposed to multiple mating were compared. Virgin females produced only males, those with single or multiple mating produced more females than males.
<i>Cotesia orobenae</i> exposed to five densities of third instar cross-striped cabbageworm, <i>Evergestis rimosaiis</i> (Guenee) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), for 24 h showed differences in percent parasitization among the treatments. The highest number of parasitoid cocoon masses was obtained from a density of 10 hosts.<br>Ph. D.

The main hypothesis goes as follows: a corporate restructuring goes through the close linking of mechanics and a mystique setting up a three-element configuration within which myths, rituals and tribes are mutually supportive. In other words, mobilizing change forces happens through a mobilization of meaning buttressed by mediations and mediators who translate it and embody it within what is fundamentally the linking of a (symbolic) legitimacy and an (objective and operational) factuality at the juncture of forces and meaning. The demonstration will unfold through three moments. -first, a review of the existing literature will evidence a certain number of prevailing normative archetypes that refer to the existence of a utopian problemizing focused on radical renewal patterns instead of fixing schemes and this within a specific context where managerial scientism meets a desire of reenchantment. -second, a case study: the restructuring of the jerada coal mine (morocco) by the author between 1992 and 1994. Through a " reflective practitioner" posture and a "reflection in action" stance as inspired by donald schoen, the author reconstructs the composite genealogy of a specific case of restructuring as rooted in symbolic and material terrains, economic and institutional resources, identity-powered and profane levers. The first area of research in this thesis involves a coupled system of diffusion equations for the existence of two distinct families of diffusion paths. Constructing one-parameter transformation groups preserving the invariance of this system of equations enables similarity solutions for this coupled system to be derived via the classical and non-classical procedures. This system of equation is the uncoupled in the hope of recovering further similarity solutions for the system. Once again, one-parameter groups leaving the uncoupled system invariant are obtained, enabling similarity solutions for the system to be elicited. A one-dimensional pattern formation in a model of burning forms the next component of this thesis. The primary focus of this area is the determination of similarity solutions for this reaction - diffusion system by means of one-parameter transformation group methods. Consequently, similarity solutions which are a generalisation of the solutions of the one-dimensional steady equations derived by Forbes are deduced. Attention in this thesis is then directed toward a semi-linear coupled system representing a predator - prey relationship. Two approaches to solving this system are made using the classical procedure, leading to one-parameter transformation groups which are instrumental in elicting the general similarity solution for this system. Le but de cette thèse est d'étudier la somme et le zéro dans deux principaux cadres : les isomorphismes de types et la normalisation de lambda-termes. Les isomorphismes de type avaient déjà été étudiés dans le cadre du lambda-calcul simplement typé avec paires surjectives mais sans somme. Pour aborder le cas avec somme et zéro, j'ai commencé par restreindre l'étude au cas des isomorphismes linéaires, dans le cadre de la logique linéaire, ce qui a conduit à une caractérisation remarquablement simple de ces isomorphismes, obtenue grâce à une méthode syntaxique sur les réseaux de preuve. Le cadre plus général de la logique intuitionniste correspond au problème ouvert de la caractérisation des isomorphismes dans les catégories bi-cartésiennes fermées. J'ai pu apporter une contribution à cette étude en montrant qu'il n'y a pas d'axiomatisation finie de ces isomorphismes. Pour cela, j'ai tiré partie de travaux en théorie des nombres portant sur un problème énoncé par Alfred Tarski et connu sous le nom du « problème des égalités du lycée ». Pendant tout ce travail sur les isomorphismes de types, s'est posé le problème de trouver une forme canonique pour représenter les lambda-termes, que ce soit dans le but de nier l'existence d'un isomorphisme par une étude de cas sur la forme du terme, ou pour vérifier leur existence dans le cas des fonctions très complexes que j'étais amené à manipuler. Cette réflexion a abouti à poser une définition « extensionnelle » de forme normale pour le lambda-calcul avec somme et zéro, obtenue par des méthodes catégoriques grâce aux relations logiques de Grothendieck, apportant ainsi une nouvelle avancée dans l'étude de la question réputée difficile de la normalisation de ce lambda-calcul. Enfin je montrerai comment il est possible d'obtenir une version « intentionnelle » de ce résultat en utilisant la normalisation par évaluation. J'ai pu ainsi donner une adaptation de la technique d' évaluation partielle dirigée par les types pour qu'elle produise un résultat dans cette forme normale, ce qui en réduit considérablement la taille et diminue aussi beaucoup le temps de normalisation dans le cas des isomorphismes de types considérés auparavant.

This essay examines the representation of evil in the Star Wars prequel film series. The starting point of the study comes from a narrative analysis of the protagonist Anakin Skywalker. Using Gerard Genette's three-part model of narrative, Anakin's narrative is examined and presented based on the model's first part, story; which highlights what the narrative is portraying through structure, characters, setting and themes. The analysis shows that Anakin got underlying attributes that create tension in him that leads him to his downfall. Turning points and events in his narrative are presented that reinforce his climax where he allies himself with the dark lord of the Sith, Darth Sidious. The presentation of the narrative chisels out three overarching themes (self-esteem, love, and fear) that are discussed to find out what Anakin's narrative implies concerning the representation of evil in the Star Wars prequel. The final analysis suggested that Anakin's feels hindered in advancing in the Jedi-orders hierarchy but also that he is met with scepticism that affects his self-esteem. The analysis also implies that Anakin's fear of losing his loved ones is disregarded by the Jedi-order that rather encourage him the let go than giving him tools to work it through. Furthermore, the analysis concludes that Anakin does not ally himself with the dark side of the Force because it is evil, but because it – in his mind – offers him, not just power but also the possibility to save Padmé from dying. Through a presentation of Anakin's narrative and his fall to the dark side, evil in Star Wars is discussed. Evil, then, is not represented as one might expect, dualistic with a good and a bad, light, and dark. But rather shifting alongside Anakin's moral compass when he allies himself with the dark side. The dark side that initially represented evil, will therefore become good and its counterpart the light side of the Force and the Jedi-order who fights for peace and justice in the galaxy, will for Anakin represent evil instead.

Assim, foram identificadas organizações presentes na Base de Dados de Divulgação de Sustentabilidade (BDDS) da Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) com atividade no setor do turismo, bem como organizações com propriedades hoteleiras classificadas como 2019 Star Awards Winners (2019SAW) pela Forbes Travel Guide (FTG), e presentes numa das vinte cidades mais visitadas no mundo em 2018. Como principais conclusões, destaca-se a confirmação da existência de uma relação concorrencial entre o investimento em divulgação de sustentabilidade e o investimento em visibilidade nos media. Os resultados mostram que as organizações optam pelo primeiro esperando uma melhoria no segundo. Inversamente, dada a escolha pelo investimento em visibilidade nos media, as organizações não sentem a necessidade de investir em divulgação de sustentabilidade. Para empresas com um nível de qualidade percebida superior, o investimento em divulgação de sustentabilidade não é uma condição causal. No que toca às empresas com um nível de popularidade percebida superior, estas continuam, na sua maioria, a resultar de um investimento em visibilidade nos media, excetuando na presença da combinação de investimento em divulgação de sustentabilidade feito por empresas cotadas.<br>The purpose of this investigation is to analyze, for the first time, the relationship between corporate sustainability disclosure and media visibility, as well as the relative impact of each of these investments on the quality and popularity perceived in the tourism sector. Thus, were identified organizations in the Sustainability Disclosure Database from the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), active in the tourism sector, as well as organizations with hotel properties rated as 2019 Star Awards Winners (2019SAW) by Forbes Travel Guide (FTG), settled in one of the twenty most visited cities in the world in 2018. The results show that organizations choose sustainability disclosure expecting an improvement in their media visibility. When they choose to invest in media visibility, organizations don't feel the strategic need to invest in sustainability disclosure. For companies with a higher perceived quality level, investing in sustainability disclosure isn't a causal condition. Nos tests empiriques suggèrent que les programmes QE de la BCE à partir de mars 2015 n’ont fait qu’accélérer « une défragmentation » des marchés obligataires de la zone euro, apparue plus tôt dans la crise, dès la mise en place de l’OMT<br>This thesis examines the specific role of volatility risks and co-volatility in the formation of long-term interest rates in the euro area. In particular, a two-country theoretical portfolio choice model is proposed to evaluate the volatility risk premia and their contribution to the contagion and flight to quality processes. This model also provides an opportunity to analyze the ECB's role of asset purchases (QE) on the equilibrium of bond markets. Limited and Meridian Brokers (Pty) Ltd. The emphasis of the study is the identification of
the differences in corporate culture between the two organisations, and having done this
identification, the selection of the change process required to facilitate the smoothest
possible integration of the two companies.
In the first instance the project research methodology is explained. The method of
information gathering is done by means of questionnaires. Three major models which
have been specifically designed to extract the necessary information are used in the project,
namely the Beehive model, the Growth Curve model and the VISA model.
Furthermore, the models to be used to drive the change process are also described in this
initial stage. These models are the ESP of change and the ROP.
During the next stage of the project the analyses of the data is done. The data is then
compared in order to show certain differences between the cultures and management styles
of the two organisations. The major differences between the two companies are then
highlighted in graphic form to show where the emphasis must be laid during the change
process, in order to create a new culture going forward. The final stages of this study project refer to the recommended change process for the
integration. The emphasis here is to highlight what specific actions need to take place so
that the new Alexander Forbes group can be an even stronger force to be reckoned with by
becoming a globally competitive insurer.
In conclusion the study project examines whether it has fulfilled its objective as set out

L'action d'un fluide en ecoulement sur un faisceau de tubes est communement decomposee en une excitation aleatoire turbulente et une excitation fluide-elastique. Les forces fluide-elastiques, qui sont couplees au mouvement des tubes, peuvent etre determinees experimentalement a partir d'une analyse de la reponse vibratoire de la structure excitee par les forces turbulentes. Pour de faibles vitesses d'ecoulement, l'excitation turbulente peut etre insuffisante pour faire vibrer significativement le tube et pour autoriser une analyse vibratoire correcte. A l'inverse, la structure peut devenir instable pour de fortes vitesses d'ecoulement : les forces fluide-elastiques font chuter l'amortissement du systeme fluide-structure vers zero. Deux methodes experimentales sont proposees ici afin d'etendre la plage de vitesses d'ecoulement exploree. Une force d'excitation additionnelle permet d'augmenter le niveau vibratoire d'un tube pour ameliorer le rapport signal sur bruit a basses vitesses. Lorsque le tube est soumis au phenomene d'instabilite fluide-elastique, un apport artificiel d'amortissement par controle actif permet de le stabiliser. Les methodes sont mises en uvre sur un tube flexible insere dans un faisceau de tubes rigides en ecoulements transverses en eau et en eau-air. Deux technologies d'actionneurs sont utilisees : un excitateur electromagnetique et des actionneurs piezo-electriques. La methode par excitation additionnelle permet de montrer que les forces fluide-elastiques restent negligeables a faibles vitesses en ecoulement monophasique. La methode par controle actif permet de realiser des essais au-dela de l'instabilite fluide-elastique. En diphasique, un phenomene de stabilisation de la structure est alors observe pour les faibles taux de vide. Les nouveaux resultats sont analyses par rapport aux resultats de la litterature en termes de couplage fluide-elastique et d'excitation turbulente.

Le déplacement de population par la violence en Colombie est un phénomène de longue date qui n’a attiré l’attention de l’État qu’à partir des années 1990. Cependant, il existe dans l’opinion publique colombienne cette idée que les villes sont éloignées des actions des protagonistes armés d’envergure nationale et que les combats se déroulent exclusivement dans les zones rurales. Toutefois, la dynamique actuelle du conflit interne nous appelle à l’étude du déplacement à l’intérieur de la ville. La présence de groupes armés illégaux dans des secteurs urbains, leurs relations de coopération et d’antagonisme avec différents groupes de la délinquance ainsi que les affrontements avec la Force Publique, ont produit des déplacements forcés de population entre les différents quartiers d'une même ville. Nous nous sommes proposés de décrire et d’analyser le déplacement intra-urbain comme une nouvelle forme de violence urbaine, conséquence directe du conflit armé interne. Nous etudions le cas des villes de Medellín et Barrancabermeja<br>Forced displacement is an issue which has affected Colombia for a long time, but which only drew the attention of the State in the 1990's. Although Colombian public opinion considers that cities are secluded from the actions of armed groups, both official and unofficial, and that combats between said groups belong exclusively to rural areas, the current dynamic of the conflict calls for us to study forced displacement inside urban areas. The presence of armed illegal groups in urban areas, their cooperation and clashes with several delinquency groups and their confrontations with the National Army and Police have produced the involuntary displacement of people within diverse districts of a same city. Taking into account the above, our research proposal is to describe and analyze intra-urban displacement as a new form of urban violence, a direct consequence of internal conflict. Les éléments de théorie des chaos ainsi que les liens entre semi-groupes, générateurs et formes symétriques nécessaires à notre étude sont rappelés et abondamment illustrés. Dans le cas purement brownien, nous reprenons la preuve de la positivité des solutions donnée par Le Jan et Raimond pour en donner une nouvelle présentation remédiant à quelques lacunes et faisant intervenir des intégrales stochastiques le long des trajectoires d’un processus de Hunt. Dans le cas poissonnien, nous illustrons notre étude en introduisant un modèle d’« exploration de nuage d’étoiles ». Il s’agit d’un flot stochastique d’applications discontinues dont les sauts sont déclenchés par une mesure de Poisson. Ce flot vérifie une ÉDS relevant de notre étude. Or cette équation peut être résolue sous des hypothèses plus faibles que celles nécessaires à la construction du flot d’applications ; nous obtenons ainsi une généralisation de notre modèle<br>In the article Integration of Brownian vector fields (2002), Le Jan and Raimond studied SDEs whose coefficients were not necessarily smooth. Under certain assumptions of symmetry, they showed that these equations admitted strong solutions which were stochastic flows of operators. They called them strong statistical solutions of the SDEs. The aim of this thesis is to extend those results to the situation where a Poisson point process is added to the SDEs. We establish an existence and uniqueness theorem for stochastic flows of operators driven by these SDEs using Wiener-Poisson chaos expansion techniques. We recall basic facts from Wiener-Poisson chaos theory and the links between semigroups, generators and symmetric forms that we need in our study. In the purely Brownian case, we give another presentation of the proof of positivity of solutions to fill some gaps in the initial one. This new account involves stochastic integrals along the paths of a Hunt process. In the Poisson case, we introduce a “star cloud exploration” model to illustrate our general framework. Here the jumps of a Poisson process give rise to discontinuities in the paths of a stochastic flow of maps. The resulting flow checks an SDE which comes within our framework and can be solved under weaker assumptions than those required to build the flow of maps. (i) La création d'un cadre d'analyse sémiotique mettant en perspective usage et dispositif de médiation ;(ii) La description des formes et des rythmes de la présence du geste de l'usager (son style d'interaction) par la création de métadonnées sémiotiques sont des outils permettant d'aborder la question des stratégies sous l'angle des modulations de la relation co-énonciative. La prise en considération du mode de perception du co-énonciateur, se révèle être un nouvel indicateur du degré de responsabilisation et d'ajustement de l'usager en lien avec le message éthique de l'Organisation énonciatrice. Nous mettons en évidence ici le déplacement du point de vue de l'analyse pour l'évaluation d'une stratégienumérique : de l'exigence performative ciblée sur le don à l'exigence d'une relation coénonciative propice à l'engagement. Les procédures d'ajustement observées dans le cours de l'interaction nous permettent de préciser les modes de valorisation coénonciatifs. Le facteur tissulaire (FT) et le facteur Willebrand (VWF) sont les deux initiateurs principaux de l'hémostase, le VWF initiant l'hémostase primaire et le FT la coagulation plasmatique. Tous deux sont présents dans la paroi vasculaire et dans les cellules sanguines et sont susceptibles de subir des modifications d'expression en réponse à une agression vasculaire. Ces variations de FT et de VWF pourraient servir de marqueur d'agression et même participer directement à la progression de la pathologie. Mon objectif principal est l'étude du rôle du FT et du VWF dans la réponse de la paroi vasculaire et des cellules sanguines à différentes formes d'agression: inflammation, modification des forces de cisaillement, atherosclérose, dans 3 situations cliniques : l'allogreffe rénale, la sténose valvulaire aortique, et l'athérosclérose coronaire. L'allogreffe rénale entraîne des modifications immunologiques chez le receveur et dans le greffon. A la phase précoce après greffe, la réponse immunologique s'exprime par une atteinte microvasculaire exacerbée par les rejets aigus entraînant la formation de thromboses étendues dans la microcirculation. A long terme la durée de bon fonctionnement du greffon dépend du délai d'apparition de lésions vasculaires qui ressemblent à une athérosclérose accélérée. Notre hypothèse a été que l'augmentation d'expression du FT pourrait être un des mécanismes participant à cette athérosclérose accélérée. Parallèlement des données de la littérature ont mis en évidence un effet protecteur de la pentoxifylline sur les vaisseaux du greffon. Un essai thérapeutique en double aveugle a alors été mené afin de comparer le devenir des reins greffés chez des patients traités par placebo ou pentoxifylline. Cent quarante patients ont été inclus sur une période de deux ans avec monitoring biologique mensuel et lors d'évènements aigus comportant l'isolement des cellules mononucléées pour étude du FT et l'analyse des marqueurs plasmatiques d'activation et de lésion endothéliale : VWF, thrombomoduline, tPA. Nous avons pu montrer dans cette étude que l'augmentation de l'activité FT monocytaire et du VWF sont limitées à la période postgreffe immédiate et aux épisodes de rejet. Cette augmentation d'activité du FT en post-greffe immédiat ou lors des épisodes de rejet était prévenue par l'administration de pentoxifylline. Par contre l'administration de pentoxifylline n'avait pas d'effet sur les marqueurs plasmatiques endothéliaux. Les résultats cliniques de cette étude ont montré l'effet bénéfique de la pentoxifylline sur la durée de vie du greffon et nous avons donc émis l'hypothèse que cet effet bénéfique pouvait être lié en partie à la modification d'expression du FT. La sténose valvulaire aortique, due à une sclérose dégénérative proche de l'athérosclérose est un modèle d'anomalie du flux sanguin qui induit des forces de cisaillement très importantes au travers de la sténose. La survenue d'un syndrome hémorragique chez des patients avec sténose aotique serrée a été décrite en 1958, et rapportée récemment à un syndrome de Willebrand acquis, caractérisé par la diminution des multimères de haut poids moléculaire (MHPM) de VWF. De plus il était démontré in vitro que, sous l'influence d'un cisaillement élevé, la molécule de VWF passait d'une forme globulaire à une forme étirée, sensible à une protéase spécifique, l'A Disintegrin And Metalloprotease with ThromboSpondin -1-Like domains(ADAMTS 13). Nous avons donc émis l'hypothèse que toute sténose aortique serrée pouvait entraîner une diminution des MHPM et un syndrome de Willebrand, et réalisé une étude prospective chez 50 malades porteurs de RA. Cette étude, a montré qu'environ 20% des patients avec sténose aotique serrée présentaient des signes hémorragiques (dépistés par un interrogatoire systématique), et plus de 75% des anomalies du VWF (diminution des MHPM notamment). Les anomalies étaient directement corrélées au degré de sténose et disparaissaient après remplacement valvulaire. Elles tendaient à réapparaître à 6 mois quand la valve implantée était trop petite par rapport à la surface corporelle du patient. La discordance entre fréquence des anomalies biologiques et symptomatologie clinique constatée dans notre série l'est de façon plus large dans la maladie de Willebrand où la symptomatologie clinique est variable et dépend de la présence de lésions favorisant le saignement comme les angiodysplasies ou des lésions traumatiques ou chirurgicales. L'étude des facteurs pronostiques après angioplastie coronaire, permettant une meilleure prédiction du risque individuel pourrait conduire à adapter la prise en charge thérapeutique et à utiliser de nouvelles cibles thérapeutiques. Le FT, par son rôle au niveau de la plaque, sa responsabilité dans la progression de l'athérosclérose en particulier dans les phénomènes thrombotiques aigus coronariens, ses liens avec les voies de l'inflammation et sa modulation possible par de nouvelles molécules est un candidat potentiel. Néanmoins, après angioplastie coronaire le rôle pronostique du FT circulant, lié aux microparticules ou sous forme soluble dans le plasma est mal établi. De même le VWF marqueur de souffrance et de dysfonction endothéliale dont le rôle pronostique à la phase aigue des syndromes coronaires est établi, pourrait représenter une nouvelle cible thérapeutique. Nous avons analysé ces 2 marqueurs chez 260 patients coronariens consécutifs, stables ou instables, bénéficiant d'une angioplastie avec suivi à 1 an. Nous avons pu montrer que les taux de FT et de VWF plasmatiques avant l'angioplastie étaient des facteurs prédictifs indépendants d'évènement cardiaque (décès, infarctus) à 1 an. Les taux de FT sont corrélés à une activation systémique de la coagulation mise en évidence par une élévation du peptide F1+2 dans le plasma. Par contre les microparticules procoagulantes dans cette population de patients ne sont pas prédictives d'évènements défavorables. Ces résultats suggèrent que la valeur pronostique du FT est indépendante de l'importance de la lésion endothéliale évaluée par le VWF. En conclusion, ces travaux montrent que FT et VWF, sont étroitement associés aux altérations vasculaires liées à des mécanismes physiopathologiques très différents comme le rejet de greffe les altérations des forces de cisaillement ou l'atherosclérose coronaire. Leurs modifications sont associées au pronostic et peuvent même induire des tableaux cliniques particuliers comme dans le cas des sténoses aortiques.

Consacrée à l'imaginaire du « dialogue euro-méditerranéen » tel qu'il se manifeste depuis le milieu des années 1990 en particulier (après la Déclaration de Barcelone en 1995 puis la mise en place de la Politique Européenne de Voisinage), cette thèse se penche sur trois cas d'étude qu'elle se propose d'analyser par le biais d'une approche transdisciplinaire. La première partie cherche à comprendre comment se construit et circule un « cinéma méditerranéen » et le savoir sur cette possible cinématographie régionale en analysant quatre festivals qui lui sont consacrés à Alger, Bruxelles, Montpellier et Tétouan. La deuxième partie s'intéresse aux enjeux que soulèvent des programmes sélectionnés par l'Union européenne (Euromed Audiovisuel et Marseille-Provence Capitale européenne de la culture) en procédant notamment à une analyse de discours portés par ces programmes et de films qu'ils ont soutenus. La troisième et dernière partie propose une analyse de Révolution Zendj (Thawra Zanj, Tariq Teguia, Algérie/France/Liban/Qatar, 2013) et, par extension, de la manière dont les questions informant ce film du point de vue de la mise en langue, du sous-titrage et du montage se présentent dans d'autres œuvres cinématographiques. It focuses on three case studies that it analyses according to an interdisciplinary approach. The first part examines both the construction and circulation of a so-called "Mediterranean cinema", and the knowledge around this supposed regional production in the context of four festivals dedicated to it and taking place in Algiers, Brussels, Montpellier and Tetouan. The second part examines the concerns raised by programs selected for support by the European Union through Euromed Audiovisuel and Marseille-Provence Capitale européenne de la culture (Marseille-Provence, European Capital of Culture). These concerns are addressed through an analysis of the discourse produced by these programs and the films funded by them. The third and last part proposes an analysis of the film Zanj Revolution (Thawra Zanj, Tariq Teguia, Algeria/France/Lebanon/Qatar, 2013) and, by extension, examines the way in which questions related to the mise-en-langue, subtitling and editing that inform this film are present in other films. The following thesis is an investigation of the actors, the forces and the conditions contributing to the phenomenon of forced labor in the Brazilian countryside. The paper begins by providing a relevant historical background to the problem of coercive labor, starting with the colonial legacy of slavery, dating back to the 16th century and leading up to the present. The aim is to explore the role of local actors, in particular landowners, gatos and the ‘enslaved’ (or workers coerced into forced labor) in constituting and re-constituting this phenomenon. At the same time the influence of local actors is contextualized in light of broader transnational processes, such as the spread of capitalism and neo-liberal globalization.

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited<br>Regional proficiency is a critical capability in irregular warfare (IW). In preparation for increased engagement in irregular warfare, the Defense (DoD) and the Military Services made several significant improvements in developing regional proficiency. While the DoD is attempting to create a new capability in the majority of the Total Force, Special Forces was created to succeed in an IW environment. As a result of its design, Special Forces valued and developed regional proficiency long before this became topical in DoD. Oddly, the last decade of overseas contingency operations which spurred interest in regional proficiency in DoD overall has also threatened regional proficiency development in Special Forces. An analysis of Special Forces training and development reveals that the Special Forces primary means of developing regional proficiency is through deployment experience. While the Special Forces Groups are regionally aligned, several have consistently deployed outside of their Area of Responsibility (AOR) to support combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. A survey and a series of interviews were conducted to determine the state of regional proficiency interest in Special Forces. Through survey analysis, several trends were identified. With this information this thesis concludes with a suggested strategy to improve regional proficiency in Special Forces non-commissioned officers (NCOs).

L’un des problèmes majeurs en analyse de formes est celui de l’analyse statistique en présence de formes aberrantes. On assiste avec l’évolution des moyens de collecte automatique des données, à la présence des valeurs aberrantes qui peuvent affecter énormément l’analyse descriptive des formes. En effet, les approches de l’état de l’art ne sont pas assez robustes à la présence de formes aberrantes. En particulier, la forme moyenne calculée penche vers les observations aberrantes et peut ainsi porter des déformations irrégulières. Aussi, l’analyse par ACP de la variabilité dans une classe de formes donnée conduit à des modes de variation qui décrivent plutôt la variabilité portée par ces formes aberrantes. Dans ce travail de thèse, nous proposons un schéma d’analyse robuste aux aberrations qui peuvent entacher une classe de formes donnée. Notre approche est une variante robuste de l’ACP qui consiste à détecter et à restaurer les formes aberrantes préalablement à une ACP menée dans l’espace tangent relatif à la forme moyenne. Au lieu de simplement éliminer les formes aberrantes, nous voulons bénéficier de la variabilité locale correcte qui y est présente en intégrant leur version restaurée dans l’analyse. Nous proposons également une approche variationnelle et une ACP élastique pour l’analyse de la variabilité d’un ensemble de formes en s’appuyant sur une métrique robuste basée géodésique. La troisième contribution de la thèse se situe au niveau des algorithmes de classification des formes basée sur les statistiques de formes : classification utilisant la moyenne intrinsèque, ou relaxée, par ACP tangente et par formes propres.Les approches proposées sont évaluées et comparées aux approches de l’état de l’art sur les bases de formes HAND et MPEG-7. Les résultats obtenus démontrent la capacité du schéma proposé à surpasser la présence de formes aberrantes et fournir des modes de variation qui caractérisent la variabilité des formes étudiées<br>A major and complex problem in shape analysis is the statistical analysis of a set of shapes containing aberrant shapes. With the evolution of automatic data acquisition means, outliers can occur and their presence may greatly affect the descriptive analysis of shapes.Actually, state-of-the-art approaches are not robust enough to outliers. In particular, the calculated mean shape deviates towards the aberrant observations and thus carries irregular deformations.Similarly, the PCA analysis of the variability in a given class of shapes leads to variation modes which rather describe the variability carried by these aberrant shapes.In this thesis work, we propose a robust analysis scheme to handle the effects of aberrations that can occur in a given set. Our approach is a robust variant of PCA that consists in detecting and restoring aberrant shapes prior to a PCA in the tangent space relative to the means shape.Instead of simply rejecting outliers, we want to benefit from the present correct local variability by integrating their restored version into the analysis. We also propose a variational approach and an elastic PCA for the analysis of the variability of a set of shapes by using a robust geodesic-based metric. The third contribution of the thesis lies in the algorithms of shape classification based on shapes statistics: classification using the intrinsic mean shape, or relaxed one, by tangent PCA and by eigenshapes.The proposed schemes are evaluated and compared with existing schemes through two shape databases, HAND and MPEG-7. The results show the proposed scheme’s ability to overcome the presence of aberrant shapes and provide variation modes that characterize the variability of studied shapes

Les performances d’un système de reconnaissance de formes dépendent en bonne partie de la qualité de l’image segmentée. Malgré les progrès effectués, une segmentation complète (c’est-à-dire avec des contours entiers) ne peut pas être toujours atteinte. Dans un premier temps, nous nous plaçons dans le cas où seulement certaines parties de la forme entière sont disponibles. D’abord, afin d’assurer l’invariance des parties de formes aux transformations géométriques, nous développons une méthode d’optimisation de l’analyse procustéenne qui consiste à retrouver les points extrémités optimaux qui minimisent la distance de Procutse. Ensuite, nous proposons une approche de reconnaissance de parties de formes et une approche de reconnaissance de formes partielles. Ces deux approches, basées-contour, sont fondées sur un recalage robuste entre les parties de formes. La méthode de recalage proposée consiste à optimiser une mesure de similarité basée sur les géodésiques dans l’espace de formes. Ainsi, nous exploitons le résidu du recalage pour définir une nouvelle métrique pour la reconnaissance de parties de formes. Puis, nous décrivons une stratégie de combinaison avec cette même métrique pour la reconnaissance de formes partielles. Par la suite, nous proposons d’utiliser la distance géodésique proposée pour la reconnaissance des parties de formes dans la définition d’une métrique globale pour la reconnaissance de formes entières. Les tests de reconnaissance (classification et recherche) sont effectués sur des parties requêtes et des formes entières de la base d’images MPEG-7, puis sur des images réelles segmentées. Les résultats expérimentaux montrent la supériorité de nos méthodes par rapport aux autres méthodes de l’état de l’art<br>The quality of the segmentation process directly affects the performance of the shape recognition. Despite the progress that has been made, it is often unreachable to segment the entire object (i.e. closed contour). In fact, only some parts/fragments of objects can be detected. We first develop a new alignment method based on Procrustes analysis in order to ensure invariance of shape parts to geometric transformations (translation, rotation and scale factor). The proposed method consists in finding optimal extremities which minimize the Procrustes distance. Then, we propose a shape part recognition approach and a partial shape recognition approach. These two contour-based approaches are based on matching between shape parts to compare. This matching process consists in establishing a robust registration between shape parts based on geodesics in the shape space. Thus, we exploit the registration residual to define a novel distance for shape part recognition. Later, for partial shape recognition, we describe a geodesics-based combining strategy with the same distance. As well, we propose to use the geodesics distance proposed for shape part recognition to define a global distance for entire shape recognition. Experiments are carried out on parts of shapes and entire shapes of theMPEG-7 database, then on parts issued from segmented real images. The obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed recognition schemes. The proposed approaches are shown to significantly outperform previous works for classification and retrieval applications

Nous avons decouvert que les cristaux d'helium 3 en croissance lente presentent des facettes dans les directions cristallographiques (110) pour des temperatures inferieures a 0,1 k. La mesure de la tension de surface de ces cristaux entre 0,15 et 0,35 k donne 0,0600,011 erg/cm#2. La theorie critique de la transition rugueuse prevoit alors une temperature de transition de 0,26 k. Malgre le desaccord avec la temperature apparente de facettage, nos mesures sont compatibles avec la theorie critique en faisant l'hypothese d'un couplage faible entre interface et reseau cristallin, ce qui pourrait etre la marque du caractere quantique de l'helium 3. Nous avons montre d'autre part qu'au voisinage et au-dessus de la temperature de transition rugueuse, c'est essentiellement la diffusion de chaleur qui controle la forme de l'interface et en particulier provoque l'apparition de facettes macroscopiques au voisinage de 0,1 k. Nous rapportons quelques resultats preliminaires sur l'instabilite dendritique, dont l'analyse est difficile en raison de l'existence de kapitza importante a l'interface

Les résultats obtenus en psycholinguistique via des études perceptives sur le traitement de la consonne de liaison montrent que le traitement de ce phénomène complexe n’est qu’imparfaitement prédit par les différentes théories phonologiques dans lesquelles il a été intégré de manière explicite. C’est pourquoi nous proposons dans cette thèse, qui s’inscrit dans une perspective résolument nouvelle, d’envisager la liaison du point de vue de la production et de la formaliser dans le cadre de la Phonologie articulatoire de Browman et Goldstein (1986). Ce modèle présente l’avantage d’une organisation directe entre phonologie et phonétique en utilisant une seule unité qui sert à la fois de primitive phonologique et d’unité d’action motrice dans la production de la parole : le geste articulatoire. Nous supposons que le statut phonologique de « segment flottant » proposé pour la consonne de liaison dans le cadre de la phonologie autosegmentale (Clements & Keyser, 1985 ; Encrevé 1988) puisse trouver un corrélat au niveau articulatoire et puisse être observé et mesuré expérimentalement. L’analyse qui vient à l’appui de cette hypothèse compare la consonne de liaison avec la consonne initiale de mot dans des contextes vocaliques identiques au moyen de mesures électro-palatographiques. Nos résultats suggèrent que la consonne de liaison est soumise à une modification quantitative des caractéristiques dynamiques qui lui sont associés. Les mouvements des articulateurs ainsi que les relations entre les gestes consonantique et vocalique sont ré-échelonnés en fonction de la position qu’occupe la consonne de manière graduelle<br>Perceptual studies in the field of psycholinguistics on the processing of the liaison consonant have shown that this complex phenomenon is not perfectly predicted by the different phonological theories in which it has been explicitly integrated. In this thesis, we propose to investigate liaison from a totally new perspective, that is from a production point of view, and to formalise this phenomenon in the framework of Browman and Goldstein (1986)’s Articulatory Phonology. This model is advantageous as it provides a direct connection between phonology and phonetics where only one unit is used both as a phonological primitive and as a unit of motor action in speech production, that is articulatory gesture. In the Framework of autosegmental phonology (Clements & Keyser, 1985 ; Encrevé 1988), the phonological status of the liaison consonant is considered to be a floating segment. In this thesis, we hypothesise that there is a correlate at the articulatory level that can be observed and experimentally measured. This hypothesis is tested by comparing the liaison consonant with the word-initial consonant in identical vowel contexts by using electro-palatographical measurements.Results suggest that the liaison consonant is subjected to a quantitative modification of the dynamic caracteristics which are associated with it. The articulator movements, as well as the relations between consonant and vowel gestures, are gradually re-scaled according to the consonant position

Ce travail analyse la permanence d'un groupe d'intérêt régionaliste à fortes ressources, le Comité pro Santa Cruz, fondé dans le département de Santa Cruz (Bolivie) en 1950, au cours des cinquante années suivantes, dans un contexte de transformations socio-économiques et politiques majeures, tant au niveau national que local. « Permanence » est entendu comme le maintien d'une capacité d'influence sur la vie politique locale mais aussi bolivienne. L'institution est fondée par les notables de Santa Cruz pour représenter les intérêts du département alors qu'il est isolé, politiquement et géographiquement, du reste de la Bolivie. Les luttes menées au nom du département outrepassent les frontières départementales pour s'imposer au pays. Santa Cruz est aujourd'hui le « moteur» économique national attirant une migration incessante des vallées et des régions andines. On fait l'hypothèse que le Comité pro Santa Cruz doit sa permanence au cours des cinquante de ces cinquante années à l'établissement et à l'entretien d'une logique politique singulière. Pour aborder cette spécificité, diverses entrées sont explorées. Premièrement, la structure interne de l'institution, les jeux d'équilibre, l'organisation et la représentation des intérêts sectoriels traduits en intérêts « départementaux ». Puis, son travail de porte-parole du département dans la défense d'un projet politique d'envergure nationale (décentralisation), illustrant ses pratiques de négociation et de protestation. Enfin, la construction d'une identité locale comme ressource d'action et les efforts de justification et de construction cognitive pour faire des cadres d'interprétation du Comité pro Santa Cruz des principes de sens commun.

Pour de nombreuses applications informatiques, il est nécessaire d'interpréter des données échantillonnées et de fournir une représentation aussi correcte que possible des objets dont elles proviennent. Entre autres, on peut penser à l'imagerie médicale, au reverse engineering, à des applications de réalité virtuelle ou encore aux effets spéciaux pour le cinéma. Le problème étudié dans le cadre de cette thèse peut être formulé ainsi : à partir d'un ensemble S de points 3D échantillonnés sur un objet O, il s'agit de fournir un modèle géométrique de la surface délimitant O. Dans un premier temps, on détaille l'implantation d'une solution classique en Géométrie algorithmique dans le cadre du progiciel CGAL (http://www.cgal.org/). Les modules développés, Alpha-formes en dimensions 2 et 3, sont dorénavant partie intégrante de la libraire et distribués avec la version 2.3. Ensuite, on présente une nouvelle approche pour la reconstruction 3D à partir de nuages de points, dont le principe est de déployer une surface orientable sur les données. Cette méthode se révèle être très efficace, et surtout capable de fournir des réponses dans des cas difficiles. Elle offre, en outre, d'excellentes performances et permet de traiter de gros jeux de données. Enfin, on décrit une nouvelle méthode de reconstruction 3D pour des points organisés en sections. Il s'agit d'une méthode d'interpolation reposant sur les voisins naturels, un système de coordonnées barycentriques locales. Elle réunit deux grandes tendances: elle propose une définition fonctionnelle, C^1 presque partout, de l'objet reconstruit tout en ne considérant que des structures géométriques discrètes de type triangulation de Delaunay. L'interpolation de coupes parallèles permet, de surcroît, une solution efficace, grâce à des calculs uniquement réalisés en dimension 2.

Ce manuscrit est divisé en trois parties : (I) Sont présentées deux études concernant les forces effectives entre objets plongés dans un milieu fluctuant. A l'équilibre thermodynamique, nous caractérisons complètement la distribution, non universelle, des forces ressenties par deux objets pour quelques cas simples. Nous étendons aussi le concept de forces induites par les fluctuations à des milieux maintenus hors équilibre. (II) Nous y étudions la réponse dynamique d'adhésifs moléculaires. Une première étude concerne l'interprétation d'expériences récentes sur molécule unique. Nous identifions et discutons, en particulier, l'ambiguïté des interprétations usuelles de ces expériences. Nous montrons ensuite comment la topologie des chemins vers la rupture se traduit dans la complexité de la réponse dynamique des adhesifs. (III) On y fournit quelques commentaires sur les interactions élastiques qui existent entre des inclusions rigides déformant localement une interface molle.
