Full textThe incidence of obesity has doubled in Sweden since 1980 and is still increasing. Individuals with obesity tends to have more of a negative body image than individuals with normal weight status. The body image of patients that have undergone bariatric surgery is complex and has not sufficiently been researched, therefore clarification is needed. The aim was to illustrate an adult patient’s body image after a bariatric surgery. A litterature study was conducted and ten scientific articles were used as a basis for the results. Three themes and five categories emerged. The themes were; Body image related to weight loss, Body image related to excessive skin and Body image related to ones surrounding. The categories were; The own body was percieved positively, The own body was percieved negatively, Excessive skin was percieved positively and negatively, Excessive skin caused feelings of shame and Positive and Negative verbal response from ones surrounding. The result shows that bariatric surgery’s impact on the patient’s body image is individual. Further scientific research is needed to determine the underlying causes to why some patients’ acquires a positive body image and to why other patients’ acquires a negative body image. Further research can help nurses to identify the patients’ individual needs in order to implement health promoting nursing interventions.

Full textBackground: To get a stoma involves a life setting where the person has to change previous living habits. The person must adapt to the new body image. Body image, quality of life and sexuality can affect each other. Studies show that nurses lack knowledge in the area of sexuality and that it is difficult to talk with patients about it. Aim: To illustrate the sexuality of patients living with a bowel stoma. Method: The method of this study was a literature review with ten qualitative and quantitative scientific articles analysed according to Fribergs model in three steps. Results: The results of the literature review are divided into three main themes and three sub-themes. The first main theme is Bodily experiences related to sexuality. The second main theme is Changed body image related to sexuality. The third main theme is Social experiences related to sexuality with three sub-themes: Fear of being perceived differently, Experiences in the meeting with healthcare professionals and Being intimate with others. Discussion: The result is discussed based on Callista Roy's nursing theory about adaption. The patient's need for support from the care after a stoma operation illustrates and how it is perceived from a nursing and social perspective.

Full textBackground: An estimated number of 20,000 to 25,000 persons in Sweden live with a stoma. These patients have different medical histories that lead to the stoma, where intestinal and urinary bladder cancers together with inflammatory bowel diseases are the most common. A stoma leads to the loss of control over the elimination, an altered body image, and generally physical sexual dysfunctions. Sexuality is a central part of human life and people have a need to express their sexuality throughout their lives, regardless of diseases. However, studies have found that nurses talk too little about sexuality. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe stoma patients’ experiences of their sexuality in relation to an altered body. Method: An integrative review methodology was conducted on ten papers. Findings: Four broad categories emerged from the data: (1) altered identity, (2) fear and anxiety, (3) sense of limitation, and (4) reconciliation. Conclusion: This study shows that a stoma generally influences the sexuality negatively in the patient group. Clinical implications: The nurse should be supportive, give information, and together with the patient and, if present, his or her partner develop strategies to deal with the problems that the individual experience.

Full textBackground: Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer for men in the Western world. Nurses’ task is to support men who suffer from prostate cancer and to make sure they understand important information that’s been given, so that these men can make rational decisions concerning their eventual treatment. Further, previous research describes masculinity as a complex concept which can be viewed from different angles and perspectives. Men’s experience of masculinity seems to be an important issue to consider when treating patients with prostate cancer. Aim: To describe how men with prostate cancer experience how the disease and treatment change their body and masculine identity. Methods: The literature review was based on eleven qualitative articles that were examined and analyzed. The articles were gathered from the databases CINAHL with full text, and PubMed Results: The result was thematized into five main categories: The treatment’s impact on men’s experience of masculinity describes how the treatment side effects: impotence, loss of libido and sexual imaginations, and the feminized body, changed how the men experienced their masculinity. The treatment’s impact on men’s ability to urinate examines the treatment’s side effects of incontinence and urination disorders, and how this affected men in their everyday life. Men handling their feelings and changed body examines different strategies for how men handling their new life situation, and the changes of their bodies. Changes in men’s relations and masculinity describes how prostate cancer and treatment changed men’s relationships to woman and other men, and how this affected their experience of masculinity. Discussions: The discussion is proceed by Dahlberg & Segesten’s theory about the “the lived body”. From this point of view the discussion examines how the masculine identity is affected by prostate cancer and its’ treatments. Further, the need to see the man as one individual with unique qualities and experiences is described, which will ease the nurses’ task to provide relevant information, and help the man find strategies to handle the changed life situation.
Heldt, Holmgren Emily, and Louise Persson. "Anpassning till en förändrad kropp, oro, försämrad självkänsla och sociala begränsningar : Kvinnor som opererat bort ett eller båda brösten. - En litteratur studie." Thesis, Kristianstad University College, Department of Health Sciences, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hkr:diva-3995.
