Abstract:
We provide a comprehensive study of out-of-sample forecasts for the EUR/USD exchange rate based on multivariate macroeconomic models and forecast combinations. We use profit maximization measures based on directional accuracy and trading strategies in addition to standard loss minimization measures. When comparing predictive accuracy and profit measures, data snooping bias free tests are used. The results indicate that forecast combinations, in particular those based on principal components of forecasts, help to improve over benchmark trading strategies, although the excess return per unit of deviation is limited.

Abstract:
We compare the predictive ability of Bayesian methods which deal simultaneously with model uncertainty and correlated regressors in the framework of cross-country growth regressions. In particular, we assess methods with spike and slab priors combined with different prior specifications for the slope parameters in the slab. Our results indicate that moving away from Gaussian g-priors towards Bayesian ridge, LASSO or elastic net specifications has clear advantages for prediction when dealing with datasets of (potentially highly) correlated regressors, a pervasive characteristic of the data used hitherto in the econometric literature.

Abstract:
We examine the potential gains of using exchange rate forecast models and forecast combination methods in the management of currency portfolios for three exchange rates: the euro versus the US dollar, the British pound, and the Japanese yen. We use a battery of econometric specifications to evaluate whether optimal currency portfolios implied by trading strategies based on exchange rate forecasts outperform single currencies and the equally weighted portfolio. We assess the differences in profitability of optimal currency portfolios for different types of investor preferences, two trading strategies, mean squared error-based composite forecasts, and different forecast horizons. Our results indicate that there are clear benefits of integrating exchange rate forecasts from state-of-the-art econometric models in currency portfolios. These benefits vary across investor preferences and prediction horizons but are rather similar across trading strategies.

Abstract:
In this paper we forecast daily returns of crypto-currencies using a wide variety of different econometric models. To capture salient features commonly observed in financial time series like rapid changes in the conditional variance, non-normality of the measurement errors and sharply increasing trends, we develop a time-varying parameter VAR with t-distributed measurement errors and stochastic volatility. To control for overparameterization, we rely on the Bayesian literature on shrinkage priors that enables us to shrink coefficients associated with irrelevant predictors and/or perform model specification in a flexible manner. Using around one year of daily data we perform a real-time forecasting exercise and investigate whether any of the proposed models is able to outperform the naive random walk benchmark. To assess the economic relevance of the forecasting gains produced by the proposed models we moreover run a simple trading exercise.

Until recently solid freeform fabrication (SFF) technology has been used mostly for production of prototype parts. However, as this technology matures, the initiative of utilising it for the manufacture of end-use products is establishing itself. As this tendency to use SFF for actual production runs increases, a demand is developing for sets of process-specific design for manufacture (DFM) guidelines that will assist designers who are designing parts for manufacture by a specific rapid manufacturing (RM) process. The purpose of this paper is to provideRMdesigners with such a series of processspecific design for manufacture guidelines.

Abstract:

Bliznik, Sean. "WHO AM I?": A SEARCH FOR AMERICA'S IDENTITY THROUGH THEATRE FOR SOCIAL CHANGE." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2007. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/2288.

Full text
Abstract:
Theatre has always existed as a didactic tool to educate society about society's own successes, failures, and foibles. The theatre and theatre artists have attempted to take society's interpretation of truth and place it on the stage for all to see and experience. Sometimes, theatre creates and performs its own truth in place of society's accepted truth by re-examining pre-existing societal constructs and creating an interpretation of truth that better represents the current state of affairs as the theatre sees it. Therefore, theatre becomes the mode by which society learns, explores, refutes, and at times, even dismisses accepted societal truths. As a didactic tool, it is in this vein of truth-seeking that theatre has entered the fickle work of social change. First and foremost, what is social change? Who can create change? How is this change measured? How does one measure the effected change on a particular audience? These questions (and more) as well as their subsequent answers are the job of the social change theatre artist and are explored in this study. This thesis is presented in several distinct chapters. Chapters one and two examine the foundations of theatre for social change and its place in the contemporary theatre world. Chapter three explores writing theatre for social change and yields the development of two original theatrical pieces of theater for social change as a direct result of the aforementioned research complete with a stage presentation of those pieces and an audience assessment (before the performance). The concluding chapters explore the results of the audience survey which explains my understanding of theatre for social change's effect on society and the need for society to continually be exposed to theatre which is socially conscious and contributive in order to firmly define America's socially conscious theatrical identity.

Chakrabarty, K. "Compensation technique for nonlinear distortion in RF circuits for multi-standard wireless systems." Thesis, University of Westminster, 2014. https://westminsterresearch.westminster.ac.uk/item/967w4/compensation-technique-for-nonlinear-distortion-in-rf-circuits-for-multi-standard-wireless-systems.

Full text
Abstract:
Recent technological advances in the RF and wireless industry has led to the design requirement of more sophisticated devices which can meet stringent specifications of bandwidth, data rate and throughput. These devices are required to be extremely sensitive and hence any external interference from other systems can severely affect the device and the output. This thesis introduces the existing problem in nonlinear components in a multi-standard wireless system due to interfering signals and suggests potential solution to the problem. Advances in RF and wireless systems with emerging new communication standards have made reconfigurablility and tunability a very viable option. RF transceivers are optimised for multi-standard operation, where one band of frequency can act as an interfering signal to the other band. Due to the presence of nonlinear circuits in the transceiver chains such as power amplifiers, reconfigurable and tunable filters and modulators, these interfering signals produce nonlinear distortion products which can deform the output signal considerably. Hence it becomes necessary to block these interfering signals using special components. The main objective of this thesis is to analyse and experimentally verify the nonlinear distortions in various RF circuits such as reconfigurable and tunable filters and devise ways to minimize the overall nonlinear distortion in the presence of other interfering signals. Reconfigurbality and tunablity in filters can be achieved using components such as varactor diodes, PIN diodes and optical switches. Nonlinear distortions in such components are measured using different signals and results noted. The compensation method developed to minimize nonlinear distortions in RF circuits caused due to interfering signals is explored thoroughly in this thesis. Compensation method used involves the design of novel microstrip bandstop filters which can block the interfering signals and hence give a clean output spectrum at the final stage. Recent years have seen the emergence of electronic band gap technology which has “band gap” properties meaning that a bandstop response is seen within particular range of frequency. This concept was utilised in the design of several novel bandstop filters using defected microstrip structure. Novel tunable bandstop filters has been introduced in order to block the unwanted signal. Fixed single-band and dual-band filters using DMS were fabricated with excellent achieved results. These filters were further extended to tunable structures. A dual-band tunable filter with miniaturized size was developed and designed. The designed filters were further used in the compensation technique where different scenarios showing the effect of interfering signals in wireless transceiver were described. Mathematical analysis proved the validation of the use of a bandstop filter as an inter-stage component. Distortion improvements of around 10dB have been experimentally verified using a power amplifier as device under test. Further experimental verification was carried out with a transmitter which included reconfigurable RF filters and power amplifier where an improvement of 15dB was achieved.

Inclusive education is now accepted worldwide as the best educational practice for children with special needs, but there is still considerable debate about how best to implement inclusion in specific cultures. The purpose of this research study was to develop a model of inclusion that is appropriate for elementary schools in Thailand and to identify appropriate leadership roles in adoption of inclusion practices. This research study was divided into two phases. The first phase consisted of an extensive review of inclusion practice and research findings around the world and development of a best practices inclusion model to guide subsequent interviews. Ten best practices inclusive elementary school principals were interviewed, and observations were conducted in classrooms and surrounding school environments. The phase one findings were then used to create a draft model for Thai inclusive education. In the second phase of research, two focus groups, made up of ten nationally recognized experts in the area of Thai special education, were used. The participants assisted with refinement of the best practices model for Thai elementary schools. Findings included identification of three critical aspects that affect the adoption of inclusion practices: specific characteristics of Thai society and culture; current policy and practices related to current policy; and financing of inclusion. School principals were found to be essential to successful inclusion adoption. Recommendations are made for changes in practice and policy and for future research. The final conclusion drawn from this study was that, even though Thailand had made a great beginning to a monumental and honorable task, the idea of inclusive education is still in early development. The core findings of the research study argue that, while more steps needs to be taken as implementation of inclusion continues, the principals, teachers, parents, education experts, and the people of Thailand have the commitment and strength of determination to make inclusion an integrated part of Thai education.

Qiu, Jiayan. "Learning for Data Association." Thesis, University of Sydney, 2020. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/23378.

Full text
Abstract:
Data association is a natural manner for human to understand the world and is therefore a crucial tool for computer vision and machine learning methods to fill the gap between artificial intelligence and human intelligence. The learning of data association aims to reveal the information understanding on various levels and shows the relationship between data entities. To this end, we explore in this thesis the learning of data association on three distinct levels: pixel-pixel level, node-area level, and sequence level. For the pixel-pixel level, the learning of association between pixels within the same image is explored. Since image capturing is an information accumulation process during camera exposure time, pixels within same image are temporally associated. We propose a method to transform the temporal association into spatial association, which successfully reveals the pixels association within the same image and extracts the embedded spatial information of the image. For the node-area level, the learning of association between node of scene graph and scene area is explored. When an image is given to a human, the understanding comes both from the image appearance and the embedded structural information. We propose an innovative approach that jointly conducts the learning of both appearance and embedded structural information, thus obtain the human-like scene understanding. For the sequence level, the learning of associations between short sequences, which we termed as seqlets, is explored. Given human sequences, the recognition comes from either the frame level or the global level. Human can recognize the contents from few adjacent frames showing, which contain both the appearance and the temporal information. Therefore, the proposed method jointly learning the optimal forming of seqlets and their association between different sequences, thus fulfil the gap between machine learning and human learning on sequence matching task.

Abstract:
Some hospital leaders lack the technical expertise to implement electronic health records (EHRs) even though the healthcare industry has a government mandate. The purpose of this single case study was to explore strategies healthcare executives use to develop and implement information technology systems for processing EHRs. The target population consisted of healthcare leaders and managers successful in implementing EHR systems in a healthcare organization. Lewin's 3-step change theory was used as the conceptual framework for this study with data collected from observations (5), semistructured interviews (5), and organizational documents. Descriptive coding was used to identify 3 themes that emerged from observations, document analysis, recording and analyzing the interview transcripts of research participants. The themes included communication and management plan for EHR implementation, information technology EHR vendor selection, and EHR implementation technical support strategy. The findings benefit both the patients and clinicians with the potential to improve healthcare service delivery utilizing electronic technology for documenting physician visits. Study results may assist healthcare providers with identifying implementation strategies successful for EHR adoption and assisting with speeding the process. The research findings may contribute to social change through increasing patient access to treatment along with community engagement in using EHRs by information sharing to reduce healthcare cost.

Abstract:
Homeschooling families in the state of Texas face challenges when developing their children's learning curriculum as they attempt to address state mandates with only limited guidelines for developing effective curricula and evaluation strategies to measure student learning. The resulting problem is that homeschooling parents are left to develop their curricula with little guidance. The absence of such guidance may create undue pressure for both the homeschooling parent and their child, while simultaneously creating the possibility of limiting student achievement. The purpose of the project study was to explore the challenges parents face in developing their homeschool curriculum in the state of Texas. Using the theoretical framework provided by Bronfenbrenner's process-person-context-time model, 10 homeschooling parents from 10 different families shared their experiences to address the guiding research question, which explored motivational factors in the design of homeschool curricula, including the use and sharing of resources. Through the use of a qualitative case study that employed semistructured interviews and field notes as sources of data, 5 themes emerged following a narrative analysis process to code the data: (a) time with family, (b) safe learning environment, (c) practical and meaningful lessons, (d) socialization, and (e) biblical training. The findings were developed into a white paper to provide parents with strategies to embed these 5 themes into a useful, quality homeschool curriculum. This project study has implications for positive social change by providing homeschooling parents in the state of Texas with curriculum design guidance from fellow homeschooling parents that can provide a basis for developing quality curricula that reflects common core values within their community.

Abstract:
There is an urgent need to have leaders who are able to strategically transition society towards sustainability. Evidence shows that challenges are mounting up and become increasingly complex. Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) aims to educate leaders to become competent to lead within the sustainability challenge we are facing. This thesis explores how leadership education can prepare teachers to become leaders to enable Strategic Sustainable Development (SSD). Based on interviews with ESD experts, the research team identified eight key competencies for leaders to enable Strategic Sustainable Development and eight pedagogical approaches to train such competencies. In addition to that, the research team analyzed how the case study organization Teach for Austria (TFA) integrates the identified key competencies and pedagogical approaches. Recommendations are provided indicating TFA’s opportunities regarding a more thorough integration of the key competencies and pedagogical approaches into their leadership education. These recommendations were then made relevant to the broader leadership education context to prepare teachers to lead. The main outcomes of this thesis intend to serve as a guidance to enable leadership the world needs.

Abstract:
This study implemented a fitness program for children and evaluated the benefits of a ten-week musculoskeletal and cardiorespiratory program. Participants in the study were selected from an after-school program entitled "All for Fun and Fun for All." Participants in the study included three boys who were pre and post-tested in each of the following areas of fitness: cardiorespiratory fitness (assessed with a treadmill protocol), muscular strength (assessed using the Physical Best chin-up protocol), muscular endurance (assessed using the Physical Best sit-ups protocol), body composition (assessed using a two-site caliper measurement), and a flexibility test (using the Physical Best sit-and-reach protocol). A psychological component was also analyzed using the Student Self Concept Scale (SSCS) for the pre and posttest measurement of self-esteem.Participants of the study attended the after-school training program three days each week for ten weeks. A control group was used in the study. Due to the low participation of the experimental and control group participants (n=2), the data collected was analyzed qualitatively for both groups.Changes were seen in posttesting in both groups. The SSCS composite scores for both control group and the experimental group showed positive changes. The experimental group composite score for self-esteem demonstrated a 5% increase and 30% increase for the control group. The composite score for outcome confidence demonstrated a 25% increase for the experimental participants and a 7% increase in the control group. Two of the three experimental group participants demonstrated improvements in muscular endurance, flexibility, muscular strength, while all three had lower resting heart rates recorded in posttests as compared to pretests. Both of the control group participants had slightly higher resting heart rates in posttesting. Both control group participants demonstrated no change in muscular strength, slight reductions in flexibility, and variable changes in muscular endurance.Due to the fact that all of the children in the training program wanted to continue being involved in the after-school program after the study was completed, and the benefits seen through the testing data, this type of program may be a positive intervention to reverse the trend of declining levels of children's physical fitness. The potential psychological benefits may also be a reason for offering a program of this type to children. More studies should be performed on larger sample groups to support this research.

Abstract:
The general awareness of the sustainability challenge and the urgency to act is increasing. However, the actions being taken do not seem to be sufficient, nor the communication about sustainability effective enough, to ensure a sustainable future. For our research, we looked at the work of sustainability practitioners using a scientifically robust framework called the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD). The research focuses on the interaction between the sustainability practitioner and the audience when communicating the FSSD. It is guided by its central inquiry, how the practice of storytelling can support sustainability practitioners in their work context. A literature review and a total of 13 interviews with sustainability and storytelling practitioners comprise the basis for this analysis. Based on our findings we map out the current practices of storytelling used by sustainability practitioners in the field and offer recommendations with the intention of enhancing this practice. Our research showed that sustainability practitioners practice and benefit from storytelling throughout their work in various ways. We consider this research with all its limitations as an awareness raiser and invitation to deepen the conversation and the exchange of experience and knowledge around the topic of storytelling for sustainability.

The following research question was used to establish a framework for this thesis: Is there a significant difference in athletes' perceptions of sport and education between 4A varsity basketball players and midget AAA hockey players in Alberta? The independent variable was the sport category (hockey or basketball) and the dependent variable was the athletes'responses to the survey. A self-developed survey instrument entitled Sport and Education Survey (ESS) was utilized to gather information. The survey drew upon thirteen statements that were grouped according to their relevance to each hypothesis. Five additional statements were included for the purpose of categorization, description and discussion. The survey was administered to a sample of 158 males who played either hockey or basketball and were currently in grades 10, 11 or 12. An approximate equal representation was reached by surveying four hockey teams and eight basketball teams. Three hypotheses were examined and tested: H1) There is a significant difference in perceptions of education between 4A varsity basketball players and midget AAA hockey players in Alberta. H2) There is a significant difference in perceptions of sport between 4A varsity basketball players and midget AAA hockey players in Alberta. H3) There is a significant difference in perceptions of post-secondary education between 4A varsity basketball players and midget AAA hockey players in Alberta. Testing the hypotheses required the used of the Chi-square test in cross tabulations. H1 and H3 are rejected: the findings indicate that both groups are concerned about their performance in education and they plah to attend post-secondary education. H2 is supported: 76.3% of hockey players at the midget AAA level were planning to become professional athletes, while only 35.4% of 4A basketball players were planning to become professional athletes. Upon high school graduation most midget AAA hockey players' choose to apprentice in the junior hockey ranks in hopes of becoming a professional athlete or to receive an athletic scholarship. Whereas the priority most 4A basketball players is to immediately attend college or university on a failure basis with or without an athletic scholarship.

Abstract:
This study presents a theoretical basis for and outlines the method of finding the Lie point symmetries of systems of partial differential equations. It seeks to determine which of five computer algebra packages is best at finding these symmetries. The chosen packages are LIEPDE and DIMSYM for REDUCE, LIE and BIGLIE for MUMATH, DESOLV for MAPLE, and MATHLIE for MATHEMATICA. This work concludes that while all of the computer packages are useful, DESOLV appears to be the most successful system at determining the complete set of Lie symmetries. Also, the study describes REDUCEVAR, a new package for MAPLE, that reduces the number of independent variables in systems of partial differential equations, using particular Lie point symmetries. It outlines the results of some testing carried out on this package. It concludes that REDUCEVAR is a very useful tool in performing the reduction of independent variables according to Lie's theory and is highly accurate in identifying cases where the symmetries are not suitable for finding S/G equations.

Abstract:
Basic criteria for determination of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) include hyperactivity, impulsivity, and distractibility. Four scales of the Personality Inventory for Children have been found to be useful in the diagnosis of ADHD. Impulsivity and distractibility can affect scores on the Hand Movements, Number Recall, Word Order, Spatial Memory, Arithmetic, Riddles, and Matrix Analogies subtests of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children. Subjects were 100 children, aged six through 13 who were referred for psychological assessment. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a correlation between scores on the four scales of the PIC and the designated subtest scores on the KABC. Four correlations were significant, but of low magnitude.

Cooper, Britney. "THE SEARCH FOR THEATRE FOR SOCIAL CHANGE." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2010. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/2248.

Full text
Abstract:
Throughout history people have sought to prompt social change through theatrical experiences. The theatre has moved the masses in ways that have frightened governments and religious establishments into closing down theatres and banning theatrical material. History proves that theatre which causes change exists and works, but it also proves there is no one definition or formula for this type of theatre. Depending on the culture, time period, issue, resources and people involved Theatre for Social Change takes a variety of forms. However, theatre affecting change does tend to maintain two common threads: the creation of a new work and the pursuit of the uncertain elements which will ensure the work affects change in its audience. With no more than two common threads, where does a young actor, recognizing a social problem and desiring change prompted through a theatrical experience begin his or her journey? How does one create Theatre for Social Change? How does one know the theatrical work has successfully caused change within an audience? If there is no certain definition, no one way to pursue it, what direction should one follow? Following Peter Brook s example as set in his 1966 production of US, I will create my own original work in the form of a one-person show and use it as the canvas to apply Brook s ideas and techniques. I hope to find that in order for an audience to change they must first be willing to participate in a performance, even if it is a performance demanding a harsh confrontation with an ignored social problem. Through this thesis I aim to prove that through an actor s personal journey with a social issue, the actor leads the way for the audience to be willing to participate and take the journey themselves resulting in change. My written thesis will include the findings of my research and preparation, a detailed rehearsal and performance journal, the original script of my performance work Knowing Fires and a reflection on the completed process including audience feedback. All of these elements will hopefully lead to a conclusive and useful approach to creating Theatre for Social Change.

Abstract:
This thesis is about direct selection for evolvability in artificial evolutionary systems. The origin of evolvability-the capacity for adaptive evolution-is of great interest to evolutionary biologists, who have proposed many indirect selection mechanisms. In evolutionary computation and artificial life, these indirect selection mechanisms have been co-opted in order to engineer the evolution of evolvability into artificial evolution simulations. Very little work has been done on direct selection, and so this thesis investigates the extent to which we should select for evolvability. I show in a simple theoretical model the existence of conditions in which selection for a weighted sum of fitness and evolvability achieves greater long-term fitness than selection for fitness alone. There are no conditions, within the model, in which it is beneficial to select more for evolvability than for fitness. Subsequent empirical work compares episodic group selection for evolvability (EGS)-an algorithm that selects for evolvability estimates calculated from noisy samples-with an algorithm that selects for fitness alone on four fitness functions taken from the literature. The long-term fitness achieved by EGS does not exceed that of selection for fitness alone in any region of the parameter space. However, there are regions of the parameter space in which EGS achieves greater long-term evolvability. A modification of the algorithm, EGS-AR, which incorporates a recent best-arm identification algorithm, reliably outperforms EGS across the parameter space, in terms of both eventual fitness and eventual evolvability. The thesis concludes that selection for estimated evolvability may be a viable strategy for solving time-varying problems.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to: 1) review the literature as it pertained to physical fitness for older adults and 2) develop an exercise and fitness guide to be used by older adults.Much of the literature dealing with: 1) cardiorespiratory endurance, 2) flexibility, 3) muscular strength and endurance, and 4) balance and coordination, suggests that given proper training and instruction, older adults can develop and maintain these areas of physical fitness well into advanced life.Older adults can develop and maintain their cardiorespiratory system by exercising at an intensity equal to 40% of their maximal heart rate. Walking is an activity in which that most older adults can participate and show improvement.Flexibility is a precursor for all movement. All movement depends on one's ability to bend and stretch. Regularity is the key to developing flexibility. Supple muscles and joints make many tasks easier and aid in the prevention of injury.Muscular strength and endurance are needed by older adults in many of the simple movements they face daily.Muscular strength and endurance can be developed and maintained through continued participation in regular physical activity.Balance and coordinated movement are important to older adults as they perform routine tasks encountered on a daily basis.Older adults can benefit physiologically, psychologically and socially from participation in appropriate regular physical activities and exercise programs. When older adults move their bodies physically, with regularity and purpose, they achieve a life of better health and well-being.

Abstract:
Graphite bricks make up a significant part of the core of an Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (AGR). The graphite moderates the neutrons vital to the continuation of the fission chain reaction and provides support and stability for the entire core. During operation, the graphite can be oxidised due to the extreme conditions inside the core and so undergo weight loss. Differential shrinkage caused by neutron interaction throughout the brick can also cause radial cracking to occur. The effects of the oxidation, weight loss and cracking reduce the ability of the graphite to function as a moderator. The effects also have the potential of reducing the structural integrity of the brick, causing movement and structural instability of the entire core. It is, therefore, vital to monitor the condition of the graphite bricks and to understand how the changes in the graphite's properties and structure may affect the safe operation of the reactor. This report firstly looks briefly at the effect of irradiation on the graphite brick; the mechanisms leading to weight loss and cracking. The report then considers various methods which can be used to inspect the deterioration of graphite blocks within the cores of AGRs deriving quantitative and qualitative information on density and crack profiling. These methods will be considered for use both on small samples trepanned from the core and in-situ blocks within the reactor core, requiring non-destructive techniques. The inspection methods considered in this report are: Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT); Four point probes; Eddy Current Tomography; and Electromagnetic Inductance Tomography (EMT).There are two main contributions of this thesis. First, the development an EIT methodology using outward facing probes, which were best suited to the geometry of the graphite bricks within the AGR. Proof of principle was established using both modelling and laboratory testing. The second contribution is the development of commercial grade EMT equipment, which can be used on-site to determine the conductivity of trepanned samples. The method was successfully demonstrated in the laboratory; however, further development will be required for use on-site, due to the sampling speed required.

Kundema, Imani Bakari. "Teaching for visual literacy by mathematics teachers in Tanzanian secondary schools." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/60951.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, I examined the topic of teaching for visual literacy by mathematics teachers in Tanzanian secondary schools. One of the goals of teaching mathematics in these schools is for learners to acquire mathematical knowledge and skills, which will be useful in their daily lives and future careers. Several studies have shown that visual literacy enables learners to acquire knowledge and skills that are also useful in their lives and future careers. It is a well-known fact that mathematics plays an important role in human endeavours, and life in general. On the one hand, research persistently reports that mathematical concepts are too abstract and complex for learners, which makes it difficult for teachers to teach these concepts effectively. On the other hand, the literature suggests that teaching mathematics for visual literacy could assist learners in understanding mathematical concepts easily, and developing visual literacy skills. Learners could better understand the mathematical concepts being taught and acquire visual literacy skills through the use of both teacher-centred and learner-centred teaching styles and various teaching strategies, including traditional teaching; group work, in particular cooperative learning; discovery; problem-based learning; multimedia instruction; as well as providing an opportunity for learners to interpret visual information and use visual media. Using a case study of three mathematics teachers from three schools, this study examined how Tanzanian secondary school mathematics teachers taught for visual literacy in Form 2 classrooms. The data was collected using classroom observations and interviews. The findings from the collected data have suggested that Tanzanian mathematics teachers do not meet the requirements for teaching mathematics for visual literacy due to various factors, such as the length of the syllabus, lack of pedagogical content knowledge, insufficient technology and dynamic media in schools, teachers' beliefs, National Examinations rules and regulations, and overcrowded classrooms. Recommendations for further studies based on this study have also been made.

Murphy, Aileen. "Planning for community-based services for the elderly in small towns in British Columbia." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/30000.

Full text
Abstract:
Elders who are living independently in the community (independent elders refers to all seniors who are living in the community as opposed to in an institution) often require support services, housing and transportation services. Unfortunately, research on North American elders repeatedly points to deficiencies in the health and human services that are available in small towns when compared to those available in urban centres. A lack of specialized medical and social services, few housing options and no public transportation services are characteristic of most small towns. For this thesis, seniors, municipal officials and formal care-givers in sixteen small towns in British Columbia were surveyed in order to determine the needs of small town elders in this province and the effectiveness of the present system in addressing these needs. The results of the seniors' survey indicated that significant proportions of the elderly living in small B.C. towns require assistance in maintaining their homes and with transportation. While the elders who reported difficulties coping with housework tended to be receiving assistance, not all those who had difficulty with yardwork, repairs and transportation were being helped. The interdependence between the support service, housing and transportation related needs of the elderly was apparent from the survey results. An inventory of the community-based services available in the sixteen B.C towns revealed that size of town is related to the number of services. In general, the larger the town, the greater the array of services for the elderly. However, size of town was not the only determining factor. Towns in which the local community had become involved in the issue of community-based services for the elderly typically had services that were not available in towns of comparable size. Under the Canadian Constitution, the provincial government is primarily responsible for the provision of health and social services. However, there are constraints or obstacles inherent to small towns which prevent services from being provided by the province. These include the fact that in a small town there is generally a shortage of personnel and organizational resources which enable a community to secure needed services from senior levels of government. As well, the distances among people and between people and services in rural environments, as compared to in urban environments, require special consideration. The results of this examination of the small town elderly in B.C. and the community-based services available to them suggest that there is a need for improvement to the present system. Enhancing the involvement of the local community in the provision of community-based services for the elderly is suggested as a possible strategy. As well, services which are at an appropriate scale and accessible to the rural elderly need to be developed.
