Abstract:
AbstractThe objectives of this study are to analyze the competitiveness of Indonesian processed food exports in the ten Middle East countries and formulate recommendations to increase Indonesia's processed food exports to those countries. The data used in this study was secondary data and estimated by using dynamic RCA method. By using the dynamic RCA method, it was found that the position of the competitiveness of processed food products in the Lagging Opportunity and Lost Opportunity categories have potential to be increased as exports products to the Middle East. These processed products are soft drinks, snacks and other processed foods. The processed food products export to the Middle East can be increased by: a) encouraging Indonesia’s Trade Representatives (Trade Attaches and ITPC) to facilitate doing business between Indonesia and Middle East, b) coordinating domestic and foreign stakeholders to obtain export-oriented food safety certification, c) accelerating the establishment of trade agreements to expand market access through reduced tariffs on imported processed foods from Indonesia, d) increasing competitiveness of export products by providing training and assistance to SME exporters including design and packaging, and e) Negotiating to simplify export documents process at affordable costs.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the nature and pattern of export specialization in Lithuania. The aim of this paper is to estimate the nature and pattern of Lithuanian export specialization under the existing conditions. Seeking to define the nature and pattern of export specialization, the basic methods of export specialization measurement and the nature and pattern of export specialization in trade between Lithuania and the EU are determined. For measurement of the pattern of export specialization in Lithuania two approaches are adopted. The index of export specialization is used to determine the pattern of comparative advantage. Secondly, trade dissimilarity index is used to predict structural changes in Lithuanian exports. Using these methods of measurement and standard international trade classification (SITC), the nature and pattern of Lithuanian export specialization was determined. It was found that the biggest flows from Lithuania to the EU are in the following groups: food, drink and tobacco; raw materials; mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials. These calculation results show the main directions of nature and pattern of export specialization. This research could be useful for preparing and forecasting the possibilities of Lithuanian export development.

Abstract:
SynopsisWhile food and drink expenditure per head in Scotland is much the same as in the rest of the U.K., primary food production is at a relatively higher level, food processing is slightly less important and alcoholic drink production very much higher. Food production in Scotland is almost 80% of food consumption but probably less than 40% of what we cat has remained within the country all the way from farm or sea to the Scottish consumer. Over half of Scottish consumers' food expenditure goes to processing and distribution and around a quarter to the farming and fishing industry; the balance is spent on imports. Farm output has roughly doubled over the past 30 years while farm prices (relative to other prices) have roughly halved. In recent years food manufacturing has regained the production levels of 1979 while other manufacturing has declined by over 10%. The alcoholic drink industry has suffered much more from the recession. The relatively stable domestic demand for food conceals changes in the pattern of that demand and the development of all sections of the Scottish food and drink economy depends on their adapting to these changes as well as exploiting opportunities to replace imports or develop export markets.

Abstract:
This article employs a transnational perspective to examine the relationship between food and drink consumption by Italians in the United States in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and Italy's process of nation-building. The phenomena of emigration and colonisation were often interlinked, especially after Italy's defeat at Adua, Ethiopia, in 1896. This threw prime minister Francesco Crispi's form of colonialism into crisis and launched a different approach, based on the creation of a ‘Greater Italy’: a sort of Commonwealth based on cultural and economic ties between the Kingdom of Italy and Italian communities abroad. They were asked to be the bridgehead for Italy's economic and cultural expansion by consuming its exports, especially food and drink products. This required the development of shared feelings of national belonging among the emigrants, by breaking down the local identities that still prevailed and were particularly evident in the sphere of diet, as well as in religion, social life and language. The article analyses the promotional material that reflected the drive to foster Italian national sentiment in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and which helped to create an Italy both within and outside national borders.

Abstract:
Background Cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) are increasing at an alarming rate throughout the world, including Ethiopia. Food handlers in food and drink establishments are at high risk of exposure to the virus due to their many daily contacts with customers. Since there is a paucity of evidence about infection prevention practices and associated factors among this high-risk group in Ethiopia including in Dessie City and Kombolcha Town, this study was designed to address this gap. Method An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 422 food handlers in Dessie City and Kombolcha Town food and drink establishments in July and August 2020. The study participants were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected by trained data collectors using a pretested structured questionnaire and an on-the-spot observational checklist. Data were entered into EpiData version 4.6 and exported to STATA version 14.0 for data cleaning and analysis. Data were analyzed using bivariable and multivariable logistic regression model at 95% confidence interval (CI). From the bivariable analysis, variables with a p-value <0.25 were retained into multivariable analysis. Finally, variables that had a p-value <0.05 were declared as factors significantly associated with good infection prevention practices of COVID-19 among food handlers. Main findings The overall rate of good practice in infection prevention among food handlers was 43.9% (95% CI: 39.2–48.4%). Among the total 401 food handlers, 79.8% had good knowledge and 58.4% had a favorable attitude about COVID-19 infection prevention. Factors significantly associated with good COVID-19 infection prevention practices were: educational status of college or above (AOR = 1.97; 95% CI: 1.32–3.75), food handling work experience greater than five years (AOR = 2.55; 95% CI: 1.43–5.77), availability of written guidelines within the food and drink establishment (AOR = 2.68; 95% CI: 1.52–4.75), and taking training about infection prevention (AOR = 3.26; 95% CI: 1.61–6.61). Conclusion Our findings showed that around one-third of food handlers had good infection prevention practices. Thus, to reduce COVID-19 transmission, integrated work is urgently needed to further improve food handlers’ good practices, knowledge and attitude about infection prevention through providing health education, training and by making written infection prevention guidelines available in food and drink establishments.

Abstract:
Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) is a parameter that reflects the general welfare of a region. GRDP data can be used to analyze the progress of the economic development of a region in a certain period. The objectives of this research are: 1) To examine the sectors which are the basis for the economic development of Tegal Regency based on the 2016-2021 GRDP; 2) To assess the leading sectors that contribute to the economic development of Tegal Regency based on the 2016-2021 GRDP. The basic sector is the sector that exports its products outside the region. The leading sector is the basic sector whose product growth rate exceeds the growth rate of the same sector in its upper-level region. The research method used in this study is descriptive quantitative which examines GRDP data with Location Quotient Analysis and Dynamic Location Quotient Analysis. The results of the study show that there are 3 leading sectors that contribute to the economic growth of Tegal Regency, namely the Mining and Quarrying sector; sector of Provision of Accommodation and Food and Drink; and the Other Services sector. From the results of the mapping of the leading sectors, it is necessary to formulate a development planning strategy by giving high priority to these three sectors. However, since the total contribution of the three sectors is very small, for the initial stage, the development planning strategy can be focused on the Food and Drink Provision sub-sector. Abstract:
The food and beverage industry has an important role to play in the Indonesian economy. This industry's contribution to the GDP of the non-oil and gas industry reaches almost 34 percent and absorbs a lot of labor. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the strategy of strengthening the food and beverage industry which can improve the performance and competitiveness of Indonesia's food and beverage industry sector. The approach used is a descriptive approach. The results of the analysis show that for some food commodities have a low competitiveness, while the beverage industry which is dominated by soft drinks and alcoholic beverages, Spirits drinks and Beer has an increasing trend. To improve the competitiveness and performance of Indonesian food and beverage products, the government has carried out several policies, but not yet optimal. The strengthening effort that must be made by the Government is to increase exports to non-optimal markets (Untapped Market Countries). In addition, for the development of small and medium industries, the industrial sector also needs fiscal incentives as well as increased industrial technology capabilities.

Abstract:
The typical Brazilian sugarcane spirit, called “cachaça”, is a drink known and marketed throughout the world. Its worldwide popularity was due to the drink called caipirinha, where cachaça is used as one of its main ingredients. Thus, there is a growing concern with its quality. Among the limiting factors for the quality of cachaça from the point of view of food security and suitability for trade and export, the presence of toxic compounds is one of the most important. Some toxic compounds may be present in the cachaça through contamination or formation during the production stages. Aiming to investigate the presence of some of these compounds in cachaças from Bahia, twenty-seven samples of aged cachaças were collected and analyzed regarding their identity and quality standards. For this purpose, analyzes of quality parameters in relation to alcohol content, acidity, copper, furfural, methanol, ethyl carbamate, higher alcohols, butan-1-ol, and butan-2-ol. Regarding the quality standards, while 74.1% of the samples were not in conformity with the limit established by the law concerning the contents of toxic compounds such as copper, furfural, or ethyl carbamate. Knowledge on the quality of Brazilian cachaça is of great importance for its recognition, since it is marketed throughout the country with growing insertion into the international market.

Monreal, Clark Alexander Cary. "The mobile life of food and drink packaging." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/2742.

Full text
Abstract:
Packaging is a largely neglected object of enquiry in Human Geography and, indeed, the social sciences more broadly. Yet it forms a crucial element of almost all food systems and without such mundane objects these food systems would fail or function very differently. In turn, food systems, which rely on the continuous flow of packaging and food, are vital for enabling our increasingly mobile lives. This thesis thus investigates the multiple mobilities associated with food and drink packaging. The study forms part of a wider ‘mobilities turn’ in the social sciences and is structured in two parts. The first part concentrates primarily on how packaging shapes the movement of food. The second part focuses more on the ways in which packaged food shapes the mobilities of humans. However, both these aspects of packaging’s mobile life are not viewed as separate but rather as entangled and mutually dependent on each other. Throughout the thesis attention is paid to how packaging helps standardise the repetitive and anticipated mobilities of food and humans. It is, in other words, examined as an immutable mobile that ensures the smooth flows of food and people. Thus, in the first part of the thesis it is shown how packaging ensures the smooth flows associated with highly automated, industrialised and safe packaged food production and distribution. It also opens up the mobilities of packaging to elaborate upon the similarly regular and anticipated flows of packaging as raw materials. In the second part of the thesis attention is directed towards the patterns of human mobility that packaged food permits. However, while emphasis is placed on the role of packaging in standardising and stabilising interrelated food and human mobilities across Euclidean spaces, the thesis also begins to interrogate the topological complexities and molecular mobilities of packaging. While packaging can certainly be seen to permit the smooth and relatively unproblematic flows of food and people it may also, and from another theoretical perspective, be viewed as a fluid and vibrant technology. These topologically complex movements of packaging are explored in cases that show its fluid articulation as a barrier which has profound implications for the regulated mobilities of food. The vibrancy of packaging is also examined through its importance for mobile practices and its capacity to affect travellers.

Abstract:
The Northern Ireland (NI) agri-food industry has faced challenges in re-building consumer confidence regarding the quality and authenticity of food/drink products. However, increasing demand for authentic, high quality produce, paired with a renewed sense of food patriotism, presents new growth opportunities for local/artisan food/drink products to be promoted for their unique quality credentials. The literature revealed that extrinsic quality cues are an invaluable marketing tool used by consumers as ‘value signals’, ‘risk relievers’ and 'informational stimuli' when shopping, to make a more informed quality decision. Yet evidence pertaining to the relative importance of extrinsic quality cues is inconsistent, owing to limited understanding of and ability to analyse the consumer quality perception process. This research aimed to determine consumer perceptions of extrinsic quality cues used to promote local produce and develop a conceptual model of the most effective extrinsic cues for the promotion of quality in local NI products. This exploratory research employed a three-stage mixed-methods approach consisting of a scoping exercise, consumer focus groups and an experimental study using eye-tracking technology measuring participants’ visual attention to a select number of extrinsic cues, informed by stages 1 and 2. Findings suggest that packaging cues have the most significant effect on consumer quality perceptions and purchase decisions while shopping. Specifically, extrinsic cues pertaining to transparency, colour and design, taste, provenance, storytelling, brand name, nutritional information/claims were most effective, particularly when displayed on FOP. This research makes an important theoretical and methodological contribution to the perceived quality and marketing literature, thereby informing the development of more effective and targeted marketing strategies to engage the consumer. Furthermore, through gaining a more holistic understanding of the quality perception process, this research proposes a number of Industry and policy recommendations to assist the NI agri-food industry in its promotion of quality local produce.

Smith, Andrea Dominica. "The aetiology of food and drink preferences, and relationships with adiposity." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2018. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10050776/.

Full text
Abstract:
Food preferences are important drivers of actual food choice, determining micro- and macronutrient intake; and poor dietary quality increases the risk for nutrition-related disease. Greater liking for sweets, fats and snacks has sometimes been related to higher body fat in childhood, yet the relationship in adults remains unclear. Twin studies are a powerful design to understand the importance of nature and nurture in these behaviours. So far, twin research on food preferences has only used young paediatric or adult populations but the relative importance of genes and the environment in shaping these preferences in early adulthood, a period of increasing independence and autonomous food selection, remains unknown. In addition, drink preferences have received little attention, and there is a need to find out if ‘unhealthy’ preferences are modifiable. This thesis uses data from TEDS, a large population-based cohort of 18-19 year old British twins, to assess the aetiology of food and drink preferences, and to investigate the association of food and drink preferences and adiposity, in late adolescence/early adulthood. Study 1 describes the development of a self-reported food and drink preference questionnaire, confirming that food preferences cluster in six traditional categories: vegetables, fruits, meat/fish, dairy, snacks and starches. Study 2 used the twin design to identify substantial genetic influences on preferences for six identified food categories and seven non-alcoholic drink types. In general, genetic effects were slightly higher for food than drink preferences, but the remaining inter-individual variation for all dietary preferences were influenced by non-shared environmental factors (any influences in the wider environment that make twins less similar despite their shared genes and home environment). Study 3a established that cross-sectional associations between dietary preferences and BMI are limited in this age group; only higher liking for dairy foods and non-nutritive sweetened beverages was positively associated with higher adiposity in older adolescents. Study 3b used a BMI-discordant MZ twin design to show that when genetic and shared-environmental confounding is eliminated, food and drink preferences do not explain adiposity differences in genetically-matched individuals. This design allowed to rule-out genetic or shared environmental factors as contributors to BMI-discordance. Lastly, Study 4 developed and piloted a short three-arm randomized controlled trial comparing two sugar reduction strategies (gradual vs. immediate cessation) to assess the feasibility of sweetness preference modification in relation to hot beverages, i.e. hot tea. Intake of sugar in tea decreased substantially in both sugar reduction conditions, without a loss in overall liking of tea. A better understanding of the aetiology of food and preferences, particularly identifying the importance of the wider environment as a salient shaper of both food and drink preferences, and their relationships with adiposity, has important implications for researchers, policy makers and clinicians. Establishing the feasibility of sweetness preference modification in beverages without loss of liking for the beverage is also important for public health initiatives, suggesting that such preference change is possible and likely sustainable over the long-term.

Abstract:
This research provides an investigation of the critical success factors of SMEinternationalisation within the food and drink industry. Since the seminal works of the Uppsala scholars (Johanson & Wiedersheim-Paul, 1975; Johanson & Vahlne, 1977), SME internationalisation has developed as a field in recent decades with numerous studies investigating different theories across a range of industries and locations. The purpose of this study is to contribute to research in this field by investigating specific issues for food and drink SMEs, as there is an increasing need to focus research on specific research contexts (Fillis, 2008). Considering the close associations that exist between food and place (Tregear, 2001), the role of place is incorporated with traditional theories of SME internationalisation in a conceptual framework designed to reflect the critical success factors of food and drink SME internationalisation. A mixed methods study, both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to gather and analyse data from food and drink producers in two independent phases. Wales and Brittany were chosen as case studies for this study, with both regions sharing cultural and geographical characteristics as regions where the food and drink industry is a prominent part of the economy. Findings of the study highlight that most companies, regardless of size and location, have the ability to internationalise, provided that the conditions for internationalisation are supportive for companies that wish to do so. The study identifies 4 company types that describe companies in relation to their international activities, ranging from improbable exporters to proactive exporters. Findings of the study culminate in the creation of two models, which outline the conditions required for internationalisation and the process in which a company can develop international activities through awareness and networks.

Abstract:
Trade plays a vitally important role in the provision of livelihoods for farmers and people employed in the spheres connected with the food supply chain. It also contributes to the insurance of food security across the globe and provides greater choice in goods for consumers. The data under analysis are the food, drinks and tobacco (SITC 0+1) exports amounts of Ukraine to the EU and of the EU to China. The timeframe under research is nine years – from 2011 till 2019 included. The purpose of the research is to analyse whether the agricultural products exports of Ukraine to the EU are correlated with the said exports of the EU to China and if they are, how strong the correlation is. The research is conducted using such statistic tools as the univariate analysis, the normality distribution analysis, the comparative analysis, the Pearson correlation and Spearman correlation coefficients, judging by the data scales and distributions. According to the research results, the agricultural products exports of the EU to China are approximately three times bigger than those of Ukraine to the EU. Judging by the calculated Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients of the agricultural products exports from Ukraine to the EU and from the EU to China and their p-values, the H0 hypothesis of zero correlation between the said exports can be rejected.

Abstract:
The analysed research problem answer the question of how the changing trade conditions affect Lithuanian agricultural and food exports. The paper aims to assess the level of specialization in the agricultural and food sector exports of Lithuania. Assessment of the level of specialization was based on calculation of the trade coverage, revealed comparative advantage and intra-industry trade indi-ces and their aggregation. Empirical research covers the period of 1999–2014. The export of agricul-tural and food products of Lithuania has been positively affected by trade liberalisation and achieved the effect of synergy due to regional integration processes (membership in the EU). It is characterised by high level of specialisation; nevertheless, this does not contribute to increasing of added value in agriculture.

Shlaymoon Toma, Shivan. A Study of Food and Drink Metaphors in Iraqi Syriac. Institute of Development Studies, August 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/creid.2022.002.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the ways in which Syriac native speakers from Iraq conceptualise their understandings of various abstract domains, feelings, emotions, actions, customs, traditions and practices through their experiences of the concrete fields of food and drink metaphors. The conceptual metaphor theory (1980) by Lackoff and Johnson has been adopted for the data analysis. A focus group discussion (FGD) was employed as a tool for data collection and 43 idiomatic food and drink expressions were collected from this. Five native Syriac speakers from various regions and of different genders, ages, tribes and nationalities participated in the discussion. The study shows that Syriac speakers use many food and drink metaphors in their everyday language. The study concludes that food and drink metaphors are used by Syriac speakers mostly to conceive abstract concepts related to feelings, attitudes and emotions. The study shows that foods and drinks are strongly rooted in the Assyrian and Chaldean culture and many traditional dishes are used in its vernacular language as metaphors.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this report is to explore Northern Ireland take home food and drink purchases in 2016, 2019 and 2020. In 2020, due to the Covid-19 restrictions, the purchasing of take home food and drink may have been impacted. Therefore, this report will examine the data to identify any key trends in purchasing in 2016 and 2019 (before the Covid-19 pandemic), and then between 2019 and 2020. However, as this study is based on observations, it is not possible to know what may have caused changes in take home food and drink purchasing. It is important to remember that data in 2019 and 2020 are not directly comparable due to Covid-19 restrictions, as the majority of the out of home sector was closed and therefore an increase in take home purchasing is expected to replace the food and drink that would have been purchased outside of the home. The analyses within this report have been conducted by the FSA in Northern Ireland with guidance from Kantar. Data presented within this report was collected in 2016 (52 weeks ending 1st January 2017), 2019 (52 weeks ending 29th December 2019) and 2020 (52 weeks ending 27th December 2020).

Hart, Lucy. Understanding platform businesses in the food ecosystem. Food Standards Agency, February 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.puh821.

Full text
Abstract:
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is responsible for public health in relation to food in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It makes sure that people can trust that the food they buy and eat is safe and is what it says it is. As part of this responsibility, the FSA works to understand the continuing evolution of the food landscape to identify opportunities to improve standards of food safety and/or authenticity. As well as any new or magnified risks from which consumers should be protected. One area that has evolved rapidly is that of digital platforms in the food and drink industry. Consumers are increasingly purchasing food via third party intermediaries, known as ‘aggregators’, from a range of vendors. Digital platforms remain a relatively new concept, with many launching in the past decade. As such, there has been a knowledge gap in government about how these platforms work and how they impact the landscape in which they operate.

Abstract:
The BeefLedger Export Smart Contracts project is a collaborative research study between BeefLedger Ltd and QUT co-funded by the Food Agility CRC. This project exists to deliver economic value to those involved in the production, export and consumption of Australian beef to China through: (1) reduced information asymmetry; (2) streamlined compliance processes, and; (3) developing and accessing new data-driven value drivers, through the deployment of decentralised ledger technologies and associated governance systems. This report presents early insights from a survey deployed to Chinese consumers in Nov/Dec 2019 exploring attitudes and preferences about blockchain-credentialed beef exports to China. Our results show that most local and foreign consumers were willing to pay more than the reference price for a BeefLedger branded Australian cut and packed Sirloin steak at the same weight. Although considered superior over Chinese processed Australian beef products, the Chinese market were sceptical that the beef they buy was really from Australia, expressing low trust in Australian label and traceability information. Despite lower trust, most survey respondents were willing to pay more for traceability supported Australian beef, potentially because including this information provided an additional sense of safety. Therefore, traceability information should be provided to consumers, as it can add a competitive advantage over products without traceability.

Salavisa, Isabel, Mark Soares, and Sofia Bizarro. A Critical Assessment of Organic Agriculture in Portugal: A reflection on the agro-food system transition. DINÂMIA'CET-Iscte, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.15847/dinamiacet-iul.wp.2021.05.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the last few decades, the organic agriculture sector has experienced sustained growth. Globally, as well as in the European Union and Portugal, organic production accounts for just under 10% of total Utilised Agricultural Area (UAA) (FiBL, 2019; Eurostat, 2019; DGADR, 2019; INE, 2019; GPP, 2019). This growth has been seen in terms of production, number of producers, amount of retail sales, imports and exports. This article attempts to build on the multi-level perspective (MLP) of the socio-technical (ST) transitions theory by employing a whole systems analysis (Geels, 2018) of organic agriculture in Portugal, which defends an integrated vision of the systems, where multiple interactions occur within and among the niche, the regime and the landscape levels. This approach has been employed in order to develop a critical analysis of the current state of the Portuguese organic agriculture sector, stressing the multiplicity of elements that are contributing to the agro-food system´s transformation into a more sustainable one. In fact, the agro-food system is related with climate change but also has connections with other domains such as public health, water management, land use and biodiversity. Therefore, it is affected by shifts in these areas. This analysis considers developments in increasing domestic organic production, number of producers, amount of retail sales, imports, exports, market innovations, and the sector´s reconfiguration. The organic sector´s increase has been attributed to European regulation, institutionalization, standardization, farmer certification, external (government) subsidy support programs, incremental market improvements (visibility and product access), the emergence of new retailers, the rise of supporting consumers and a shift away from conventional agriculture (Truninger, 2010; DGADR, 2019; Pe´er et al, 2019). However, together with positive incentives, this sector also faces numerous barriers that are hindering a faster transformation. Difficulties for the sector to date have included: product placement; a disconnect between production, distribution and marketing systems; high transport costs; competition from imports; European subsidies focused on extensive crops (pastures, olive groves, and arable crops), entailing a substantial growth in the area of pasture to the detriment of other crops; the fact that the products that are in demand (fresh vegetables and fruit) are being neglected by Portuguese producers; expensive certification procedures; lack of adequate support and market expertise for national producers; the hybrid configuration of the sector; and price. Organic agriculture as a niche-innovation is still not greatly contributing to overall agricultural production. The low supply of organic products, despite its ever-increasing demand, suggests that a transition to increased organic production requires a deeper and faster food system reconfiguration, where an array of distinct policies are mobilized and a diversity of actions take place at different levels (Geels, 2018; Pe´er et al, 2019). This paper will attempt to contribute an overall critical assessment of the organic sector´s features and evolution and will identify some of the main obstacles to be overcome, in order to boost the sustainability transition of the agro-food system in Portugal.

Abstract:
Since the outbreak of COVID-19 at the end of 2019, the pandemic has brought both social and economic impacts to global communities, although to varying degrees. Since the onset of the pandemic, different regions have responded in various ways by taking different measures to fight the pandemic and its effects. In Tanzania, the first case was recorded on 16 March 2020 and, to contain the spread of the virus, on 17 March 2020, the Prime Minister announced measures including the closure of all education institutions, the suspension of public gatherings and international passenger flights, and mandatory quarantine for individuals entering Tanzania. However, in June 2020, the government announced the easing of the restrictions after observing a significant decrease in the COVID-19 infection rate and, despite a subsequent ‘second wave’ of the virus, the government declined to re-institute movement restrictions. This decision led to the implementation of non-tariff trade barriers which were imposed on cargo carrying grain and other exports to neighbouring countries, especially Kenya. The situation became so bad that diplomatic intervention had to be sought. In order to understand the resulting socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 crisis in Tanzania, data were collected in three waves during mid-July2020, October 2020 and February 2021. This paper presents a synthesis of the results of these three survey rounds.
