Abstract:
The aim of this essay is to examine three separate Swedish public libraries and their respective websites on the grounds of the usability sciences. I firstly had to summarize the main properties of the usability-field in order to gain an extended knowledge of its purposes and possible usage for today’s library systems. I was then able to apply the extended knowledge in the examination of the three library websites and the purpose of determining whether or not they were designed according to the standards set by the usability-sciences. Usability is a rather new science that deals with the dissection and examination of computer-based systems, in order to find the key components that make systems user-friendlier. With user needs being the main focus of its research, usability tries to meet all the different needs of the modern user and construct systems that are less system-centered and more user-centered. As a result, the field of usability has been forced to rely on other scientific fields that have long dealt with human behaviour, such as the fields of Sociology and Psychology to be able to grasp the complexities of human information behaviour. For the field of Library- and Information Science (LIS), the introduction of usability has been fairly recent and may therefore take a while to fully implement into the practice. However as this essay will show, several Swedish public libraries have already made the daring leap and  are well on the road to evolving more user-friendly websites and systems. Hopefully, this new transition will also give them an edge in the highly competitive information-sphere of today.

Abstract:
This essay was to investigate what self-image public libraries convey on Facebook and what image is received by the users, along with comparison of those. It was investigated if the received image corresponded with the users’ previous image of public libraries. The method used was interviews with the Facebook administrators and surveys with the users. The theoretical framework was Kotler’s model for image creation. The research is mainly American and shows Facebook as an accepted marketing tool for libraries among students, but as not taken seriously by the library staff. Also the Swedish studies show that Facebook is used for marketing. They show there are no policies for working with Facebook image and that the process is randomized. The results of the interviews show that the main purpose for the libraries’ participating on Facebook is marketing and conveying a positive library image, although there are no specific guidelines. The results of the surveys show that the majority has a positive view of the pages. The negative image is due to a lack of correlation between the recipients’ earlier image of libraries and the mediated image. The receivers believed that the pages were created for marketing. The analysis of the results showed that the libraries that used Kotler's model for image creation got more positive response among users than those who did not. The most important factor in library image creation on Facebook is how well it reflects reality and how well the image corresponds with the recipients' perception of reality.

Abstract:
Information technology has become an integral part of our everyday lives. The Web is an important part of this development, however, web pages can be inaccessible to many groups of users. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the accessibility of Swedish public library websites. Besides examining the general accessibility, this study also covers whether any specific aspect of accessibility is particularly poor and if so which groups may be affected. In addition, this study also examines whether a correlation can be found between the degree of accessibility and the size of the website. The website size definition comprises three measurements; the size in kilobytes of the entry page of the website; the character amount of the entry page of the website and the amount of inhabitants in the website's districts. The method used for examining this hypothetical correlation is the Pearson Correlation. The findings are that the accessibility of Swedish public library websites in general is low, and that this affects all groups of users but some in particular. The affected users are blind users or users with low vision, deaf users, those with attention deficit disorder or those with impairments of memory or intelligence. No connection could however be established between the accessibility of the web sites and the three definitions of their size.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to examine different attitudes regarding freedom of information and how libraries should fulfil their information-task represented by four organisations. The organisations are important in shaping the Swedish public libraries in different ways. The purpose is to examine in what ways their definition of information freedom may differ from one another and what that means in defining the public library. For the survey the qualitative textual analysis has been used for examining the documents and websites that are part of the debate about the public library and information freedom. We chose to interview representatives of four organisations that in different ways influence the shaping of the public library. The four libraryorganisations are Bibliotek i Samhälle BiS, IFLA/FAIFE , Svensk Biblioteksförening and Bibliotekarieförbundet BF. The thesis shows that the attitudes regarding information freedom relates to the attitudes towards what role the public library should play in the Swedish society. Several different elements effect the different organisations definition of freedom of information. Elements such as tradition, professionalism, legitimacy and its context.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study how public libraries in Sweden use alternative shelf arrangements that differ from the library’s original classification system, which in Swedish public libraries usually is the SAB-system. I sent out a survey to 169 public libraries, where I received 114 replies. 77 of these stated that they had some kind of alternative shelf arrangement, therefore these are the ones that are included in my study. I wanted to investigate in what way the libraries had changed their shelf arrangement and why this decision was made. I also wanted to explore the staff’s attitude towards this change, and how they perceived the user-satisfaction after the change. I came to the conclusion that most libraries had arranged their collections after category and genre. The most prominent reason to change their shelf arrangements was to make the library more user-friendly, the SAB-system was considered to be too complicated for the users to understand. Most of the staff had a positive attitude towards the change, they considered it to be an exciting project and something that would benefit both staff and users. They were of the opinion that most users had appreciated the change, and that it had assisted them, better than before, in finding what they were looking for in the library.

Abstract:
This master’s degree thesis stems from the new possibilities that digitization offers preserving and increased public accessibility of our cultural heritage, but also how a lack of co-ordination and standardization may result in short-term projects and lack of quality. The purpose of this thesis is to examine a selection of public libraries’ digitization projects. The two questions posed are:How does a selection of public libraries conduct their digitization projects concerning a) goals and objectives, b) execution c) what resources they encompass? How well does their work agree with the recommendations that exists for goals, objectives and execution? To answer the questions interviews were conducted with persons in various ways involved with the digitization projects. In addition to the result of the interviews, material from guiding principles and recommendations by a selection of actors within the fields of digitization was used. The study shows first of all how publication of the digitized material, rather than preservation, was the most common goal and objective and that local material was prioritized. The execution, concerning technical aspects, differed somewhat among the participating libraries, and also choices made regarding for example file-format. These differences can partly be explained by different ambitions among the participating libraries but also due to lack of standardization. Furthermore, all libraries, except one, had financed their projects with external contributions.

Abstract:
A trend since the early 90’s has been that some public libraries offer a special shelf containing environmental information to the community, but it seems as though the subject has been overlooked by the literature and the science community. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to study how three independent public libraries work with environmental information that is made available to the community. The following questions were addressed: 1) Which arguments can be found as to why the libraries offer this activity? 2) How does the environmental work at the public libraries look and what does it contain of? 3) Are there any similarities or differences in this work between the three libraries? To answer these questions interviews with librarians were carried out; observations were made to complement the interviews. Kathryn Miller’s theory “the libraries green role” (2010) was used to identify which roles the libraries played in the local community. Miller suggests that there are two possible roles that the library can play in order to contribute to the greening of the community: that of an environmental leader and/or environmental educator. The results showed that the libraries environmental work differed to some extent but was largely similar. The arguments behind the activity were found to be democracy and education. The libraries were in larger extent identified to act as an environmental educator than an environmental leader.

The object of this bachelor thesis is to examine how publiclibraries are working to reach out to boys in their early teens, and from a relationship marketing perspective see howlibraries are using marketing as a tool in creating long-termrelationships with this user group. The following questionsare asked: How do public libraries market themselves toboys in their early teens? How are children’s and youthlibrarians working to create long-term relationships with thisuser group? How do children’s and youth librarians viewmarketing as a way to create long-term relationships with theuser group? The theoretical framework of the study is EvertGummesson’s model of relationship marketing. Interviewswith five children’s and youth librarians make up theempirical data. The results from the study include that noneof the libraries have strategic plans for their marketing andthat the librarians do not seem to have adopted the view ofrelationship marketing. The results also indicate a differencein the professional roles, where the youth librarians giveboys in their early teens a higher priority in their work thanthe children’s and youth librarians. A certain confusion as towhat role libraries should have in relation to boys in theirearly teens can also be discerned, where the main purposesof marketing to this user group are seen as promotion ofreading as well as a wish to change this user group’sperceived image of the library as merely a collection ofbooks.

Abstract:
Several public libraries are displaying media, such as literature, on the websites of their own. The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to make a survey of the display phenomenon at Swedish public libraries. Therefore the authors of this essay seek to understand why media is being displayed on the websites of public libraries, how it is being displayed and what kind of consequences the displaying will provide according to the respondents. The theoretical framework is based on different theories where marketing and availability defines the equal summary. The choice of a quantitative method such as a questionnaire was obvious since the purpose is to make a survey. Amongst 290 websites of public libraries 115 were chosen to participate accordingly to the author’s definition of displaying, thus libraries that somehow bring out media. 69 respondents chose to take part of this study. Marketing by displaying seems to be the main reason. There is however some factors that imply lack of using established principles of marketing. Though it is a necessity to display in a prime location there are, for instance, few libraries who display at the homepage – a place considered as a prime display location. Commitment to the websites of the community and lack of time are possible obstacles, preventing improvement of displaying. Most of the respondents recognize however the importance of displaying and support the thesis that displaying is favourable to libraries circulation.

Abstract:
The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to describe how Swedish public libraries use the online social network Facebook and its functions. Our focus of this study lies on how the librarians use the network and what experiences they’ve made. The questions we wanted to answer were:•How do the libraries in this study work with Facebook and its services? •What do the interviewed librarians think about working with Facebook as an instrument?•What pros and cons can be identified from working with Facebook? The methodology used for this study was qualitative interviews. Three interviews were conducted with librarians that have the main responsibility of their respective libraries’ Facebook-page. The theoretical framework for this thesis is constructed by theoretical ideas about user behavior online in terms of marketing and the generative web. The results of this study indicate that Facebook serves the different libraries’ needs well. We have observed a positive attitude towards Facebook, and the interviewed librarians correspond with the ideas of Facebook as a playful and creative instrument. The network is a resourceful means to connect with the libraries’ patrons even outside the library. This study will prove significant for the future studies regarding the use of Facebook in Libraries. It could also prove useful for libraries that are thinking of starting a Facebook-page.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is, from a self directed learning perspective, to investigate the support of public libraries and genealogy associations of genealogists' own research, i.e. their search for ancestors as well as their possibilities to broaden their history outlook. Accordingly, five public librarians and five genealogy representatives in the west of Sweden have been interviewed regarding the support that can be offered to genealogists. The investigated support to genealogists in their own research is about working environment, literature and material, activities and the cooperation between public libraries and genealogy associations. In this thesis conclusions are merely drawn from a self-directed learning perspective, a perspective where also different forms of support are being recommended by scientists. The study shows that the public libraries offer a working environment with the necessary equipment and other means of assistance which leads to time saved for genealogists. Besides, the thesis shows how the public libraries provide information, rather than give advice regarding literature and material, while the support of the genealogy associations involves advice as well as information. The genealogy associations offer more activities than the public libraries which, from a self directed learning perspective, increases the possibility for genealogists to learn more efficiently. Through activities, and the above mentioned cooperation, genealogists are being offered different supporting persons, such as the librarians and the representatives of the genealogy associations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this Master thesis is to examine whether the term elasticity is relevant and functional to apply to public library organisations. Another aim of the thesis is to relate the term elasticity to public library organisations in a network society. Sociologist Manuel Castells provide the theoretical framework on the network society. Three investigations (meant to complement each other) in two Swedish public libraries seek to give answers to these questions. To be able to examine which areas of public library activity are elastic, I make a rough definition of what public library organisations consist of – nine activity fields are identified using IFLA’s guidelines in combination with Swedish law of public libraries. I also define elasticity. Three qualities make the term interesting to apply to public libraries: 1) elastic objects (libraries) have an ideal shape, 2) they (libraries) are moulded when pressure is applied from outside, and 3) when pressure applied from outside becomes too intense, elastic objects (libraries) break (or become dysfunctional). The essay undertakes three investigations in Alby public library and Dieselverkstaden public library in Nacka (both in Stockholm). In the first investigation two aspects of elasticity (in relation to public libraries) are examined: One aspect regards how elasticity is expressed in two texts that govern public libraries in Sweden – Swedish law and IFLA’s guidelines for public library activity. Is elasticity intrinsic in these norms and in what way? Secondly a comparison is made between how elasticity is expressed in these normative texts and the actual situations in two public libraries, in which way they are elastic, and what discrepancies there are between texts and scenarios from practice. I study the library – its collections, public activities, documents and rules and regulations regarding loans. In the second investigation I aim to find out how the visitors of public libraries shape the library, how they perform pressure on it. Short survey-like interviews are completed with twenty visitors at the two libraries. The third investigation consists of interviews with two members of the staff at each library. These interviews assist me in the process of developing thoughts regarding elastic libraries in a network society. Results show that the term elasticity is relevant but evasive. It becomes clear that studying IFLA’s guidelines and Swedish library law will not answer the question where the elasticity of the activity fields end. That limit seems to become evident only when examining libraries in practice. I find that five activity fields can be called elastic (in practice): the collections, the librarians, to give access to information and ICT, the library room and environment and management. Results also show that qualities that signify the network society combined with political changes, affect the way public libraries are perceived and opinions of how they ought to be managed. This is what I consider to be pressure on a global level. I also find that this pressure is difficult to measure.

Abstract:
The objective of this bachelor thesis is to examine how some larger Swedish public libraries reason about the use of social media as part of their activities and outreach. To attain the purpose three research-questions were established; why does the public library use social media? How does the public library utilize social media? What extra value do librarians believe that use of social media can add to the libraries’ function? The methodology used in the thesis is qualitative interviews. Six interviews were conducted with librarians in charge of social media at their respective libraries. Five of the interviews were conducted by telephone and one by email. The theoretical framework for the thesis is the model developed by the three Danish researchers Jochumsen, Hvenegaard Rasmussen and Skot-Hansen, which describes the public libraries’ functions, goals and opportunities in the knowledge and experience society. It is concluded in this thesis that public libraries are using social media to connect with people, to communicate and interact with them. There is a wish for social media to serve as a meeting place where librarians can interact with users. Our results show, however, that these hopes are not fully realized, because the desired response from the users does not occur. Through social media, libraries can make their activities more visible and their resources more readily available for users. It is important for the libraries’ credibility to be available and active on social media. The librarians we interviewed emphasized the importance of updating social media to keep them current and attractive to users. They also surmised that, for the future, the use of social media in libraries will increase and develop.

The aim of this study is to examine Swedish public libraries preservation of rare book collections. In this study a rare book is rare when it become over a hundred years. I will investigate if libraries have any written policies or plans when it comes to preservation and also what the librarians’ opinion about rare book collections are. This is of interest because public libraries have a lack of responsibility when it comes to preservation. The librarians’ opinions will be based on Svante Beckman and Magdalena Hillström’s theory of museums four idealtypes. The four different types are the treasury, the archive, the school and the theatre. The theory then will let us see if the librarians think their rare book collections are subject only for the audience or the collection. I will examine six librarians from six different cities in Sweden. To my help I will use a questionnaire. There will be for example questions about aims, problems, visions and care. The study will then be based on a method of qualitative content analysis. The result of the analysis reveals that the majority of the librarians’ think their rare books are subject for the collections. They includes in the Treasury and the Archive. No preservation documents were written at the chosen libraries and there were only two libraries that had written something about cultural heritage and preservation in their library plans.

Abstract:
Public libraries have an important roll of making information accessible to all people. This democratic right supports the cultural development in our society. When public libraries build websites offering information and services it can sometimes cause obstacles for impaired users. It is therefore our purpose to evaluate a selection of websites and library plans to examine how the libraries work with accessibility for these users. This thesis is based on theories of cognitive and human computer interaction, and information architecture. To carry out the examination we will use a checklist, derived from established international guidelines set by W3C, used by Swedish authorities to achieve a "24-hour authority", and a Web Accessibility Toolbar. By comparing the results from examining the library plans and the websites, we concluded that few measures have been taken to facilitate for the impaired users. We also concluded that design is more important than accessibility. A majority of the libraries plan to widen their selection of online services, but that there are no plans to make the existing services better or easier to use. Statistically, only two of the nine websites, scored 80% or higher on the checklist evaluation, and the average result was 65%. We therefore concluded that the public libraries did not live up to the set goals in their library plans, or the guidelines set by Swedish authorities.

Abstract:
The aim of this Master thesis is to describe why and how public librariesuse the social networks Facebook and Twitter. The focus is to study whatbrought about their use, how the work is carried out, ideas and objectivesbehind the use and what libraries actually convey on the networks. Themethodology is twofold: semi-structured interviews with responsiblepersonnel at four Swedish public libraries, and an ethnographic contentanalysis of four months of the libraries' status updates and tweets onFacebook and Twitter. The theoretical framework consists of a model forthe roles of the public library in society, and of discourses about thepublic library in media. Results indicate that social networks are used to market, make accessibleand inform of the library's resources and services. Furthermore, networksare used to communicate/interact with followers and to inspire people toread. We also detect a tutoring trait. Libraries also view social networksas a meeting place. What libraries do on the networks can be seen as anonline interpretation of traditional library goals. All four spaces from themodel for the new library – Inspiration, Learning, Meeting andPerformative – were represented in the objectives expressed in theinterviews. In what is conveyed on the networks focus lay on Inspirationand Meeting. Social networks also act as a place to market the physicallibrary. From a discourse perspective the study suggests that librariesexpress disidentification and demonstrate ability to remain open both todifferent media formats and different methods for library servicesdelivery.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study the conditions three public libraries have to be a resource for university students. The libraries are all situated at a distance from universities that allow the students to commute between the university and their homes. These students often make the same demands on the public library as they do on the university library. In order to conduct this study the frame factor theory has been used. This theory was developed by pedagogic scholars during the 1960s and focuses on how the framework surrounding the school affects the learning results. By means of using this theory it is possible to study how the framework surrounding the public libraries affects their abilities to assist the students. The frame factors are divided in two main parts, which are organizational frames and the participant’s conceptions. These frames are studied on a national as well as on a local level. The method that has been used is qualitative interviews with local politicians, librarians and university students. The purpose for choosing these three groups is to get their different points of view of how the public library can be a resource for the students. The thesis shows that although co-operations between public and university libraries already exist these co-operations must be more developed than they are today. It also shows that the conceptions that the different participants carry not always are in accordance and that the public libraries therefore must be better on marketing themselves.

Abstract:
The purpose of the thesis is to investigate how information seeking processes, librarians and users are formed and constructed in web-based search guides ofpublic libraries. Questions raised are: How are information seekingprocesses presented in the search guides? How do libraries and librariansappear in the texts? How are users presented in the search guides? The thesis analyses web-based search guides from two large public libraries insouthern Sweden, eight texts in total. The texts are analysed through asystemic functional text analysis based on ideational meta-functions,interpersonal meta-functions and also register and context.Based on the textual analysis, effects and consequences of the design andformulation of the texts are discussed. Theories and previous research aboutinformation literacy, user education and expertise are used. Mainly fourdifferent approaches to user education are identified to further clarify anddeepen the discussion. The conclusion is that the design of web-based search guides hasconsequences for how information seeking processes, libraries and librariansand users are shaped and created in the web-based search guides.

Abstract:
The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to investigate what role the public library in Sweden may have when it comes to gender equality issues. The questions at issue that were asked, in order to give an answer to the aim, was how the librarians defined and saw work with equality, how much the steering documents for the library impact and what they are doing in their practice to weaken the dichotomies between the sexes. The theoretical starting point used for this study is three concepts, the gender system, the stereotypes and the gender contract described by the Swedish historian Yvonne Hirdman. The purpose of the three concepts is that gender is a social construction which produces gender stereotypes and a gender order in society, which the library is a part of. The investigation was made on one public library in Sweden where an equality project has been carried out. The method used for gathering data is qualitative interviews with three librarians at one main public library with its branches. The conclusions drawn from this study is that the librarians thought equality issues are important for the library to work with, the steering documents are weak in these questions but usable if you have carried out an equality project and finally there are many things a library can do in its practice to weaken the dichotomies e.g. deny certain books, clarify steering documents etc.

Abstract:
As the title of this thesis suggests, presenting one’s self in modern-day society can sometimes resemble a trial-and-error process. In this bachelor’s thesis, the aim is to examine nine Swedish public libraries’ self-presentation through their social media expressions, thus to provide a contemporary overview of what content is being published in relation to the public library organization’s identity formation within the social media platform Instagram. In order to achieve this, following research questions are asked: What kind of content do libraries convey via their Instagram accounts, and what different types of library-specific genres emerge from the empirical material?; Which diverse representations of the public library, library activities and the librarian are conveyed in the empirical material, and how do they relate to more general understandings of the librarian and the library?; How can the selves that emerge in the library's self-presentation on Instagram be seen as an expression of an institutional, professional or media-specific identity, and what impact does technology and the library's social media genres have on how these are shaped?  Using a categorization scheme, consisting of six content categories, this is conducted through a content analysis of 607 library-generated Instagram posts. Based on the empirical evidence the result indicates that four themes in particular emerge as especially present and recurring in public libraries’ Instagram publications. These themes can be summarized as Tributes, hashtags and societal trends; The public library, building and place; The librarian; and The book. Through the libraries’ social media channel, their Instagram posts and mentioned themes, library-specific genres related to the library’s and librarian’s self-presentation seem to occur, which appears to go beyond professional and institutional identities. Therefore, it seems possible to talk about a specific social media identity, ergo Instagram as a new arena for the public library’s mediated self-presentation.

Abstract:
The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to describe how Swedish public libraries use Web 2.0-tools and their experiences of using the tools. Focus of the study lies in the contact between public libraries and their patrons on the Web 2.0-tools. For the purposes of the study, the use of weblogs and MySpace were chosen for examination. The methodology used for this study was qualitative interviews. Eight qualitative interviews were conducted with public librarians in seven public libraries in Sweden. The theoretical frame for this thesis consists primarily of theories on social networks and virtual communities. Results of this study indicate that using weblogs and MySpace in public libraries are resourceful means to connect with patrons in new ways. It is concluded that, weblogs are mainly used for mediating fiction and MySpace for marketing library services. Weblogs are not seen as places for networking while MySpace is. The contacts created on the Web 2.0-tools are weak since the communication is scarce. The study also shows that in order to increase patrons’ low use of the Web 2.0-tools, the libraries need to regard them as online communities and broaden their target group. This information can be of significance for other public libraries who intend to start using weblogs and MySpace.

Abstract:
The aim of this essay is to try to find the differences and similarities of two public librariesin the town of Kristinehamn and the rural community of Vara during the year 1994. Especiallyinteresting was if the different political traditions of the two communities -left wing majorityin Kristinehamn and right wing in Vara- have influenced the forming of the public libraries. The comparison contains accounts from the annual reports produced by the libraries between1987 and 1994, a more thorough study of the activities and interviews with decision makers in1994. The interview with the decision makers indicates that there is a distinct difference betweenthe librarians and the rest of the informants, this distinction shows, that in a tight budgetsituation the librarians prefer not to cut down on staff while the other informants actuallyfavour to make cuts on the procedures handled by the librarians. The general opinionthough, is that they all agree that the role of the public libraries is to defend democratic rights. The final conclusion is that the material of this essay supports the opinion that the idea ofpublic libraries is stronger than the political differences in Vara and Kristinehamn.

Abstract:
This bachelor thesis aims to examine how library staff experience the impact language cafes has on user integration and personal development, as well to study how language cafes can enable meetings between different individuals. Three different issues were to be answered which were a) how language cafes work on libraries, viewed as a social meeting place, b) how do language work with perceived user integration and c) with perceived personal development? Seven different semi structured interviews were conducted and thus six libraries were studied as two of the interviews were conducted on the same library. The library staff all worked in Skåne län and with language cafes. To analyse the results a theory about low-intensive and high-intensive meeting places was used in combination with four different themes: integration, personal development, disagreement and social contact. The theory that was used were created by Ragnar Audunson and is about how a meeting can be with someone who shares their interests or values, thus making it a high-intensive meeting, or someone who doesn’t share the same interests or values, thus making it a low-intensive meeting. The results of this thesis showed that a language cafe does result in both giving a place and reason for people to meet. There were signs of people developing as people, mainly getting more confidence and in the end seeking internship and thus not needing the language cafe anymore. Another conclusion is that the language cafes can be viewed as a high-intensive meeting place, but also a low-intensive, depending on how people look at and interpret it.

Abstract:
The subject this thesis will investigate concerns the matter of how political ideologies exist within public libraries with a focus on the democratic ideal. Public libraries are part of the political system and we want to show how political ideologies take their shape in public libraries and the possible consequences of this. With the help of three major political ideologies, liberalism, conservatism and socialism we investigate how the democratic ideals of these ideologies are expressed in documents that describes activities the libraries will and have performed. In order to identify these ideologies we use discourses in cultural policy as a bridge between the investigated documents and the political ideologies. As an analytical tool we have developed a model that describes the relation between text, discourse and ideology which we use in our analysis. The results of our analysis shows that there is an imbalance concerning how much influence the different ideologies have over the activities in the public libraries, where we have seen that the liberal ideals have the upper hand. These results are similar to those of previous researchers and we think it is important for the public libraries to be aware of the influence political ideologies have over cultural policy, on all levels, in order to be an objective institution for the citizens in our society.

Publication of science fiction has a tradition in Sweden. Adult-fantasy does not. In recentyears, the 1980's, Swedish publishers have realised how profitable fantasy is. Of the totalpublication of the two genres between 1989 and 1994, 54% was science fiction and 46%was fantasy. The reason for this even balance is that fantasy-books get reprinted more frequentlythan science fiction-books. However, there are more science fiction-titles published thanfantasy-titles.The four public libraries that I have examined have similar methods of acquiring books. Theyhave all, just about, acquired the same titles of fantasy while the science fiction acquired differsto a large degree. The four libraries • acquisitions are similar to those of the libraries connectedto Bibliotekstjänst's database BURK. The differences between the four libraries lie in thenumber of science fiction and fantasy-books and the distribution of different languages thebooks were originally published in.

Abstract:
This Masters thesis aims to examine how Swedish public libraries deal with the new challenge of evaluating web resources. In order to study this we have asked staff involved in gathering links for the libraries web sites to participate in a survey concerning how they go about choosing links. Apart from trying to capture this procedure it has been our purpose to establish whether the libraries feel they should provide their patrons with evaluated links at all and in what way they are influenced by other libraries or other main figures involved when choosing a link. We were also interested in the differences between libraries with large and small link collections. When defining evaluation, we have only focused on content. The survey was made available on the Web and of the 154 public libraries with links on their web sites that were contacted, 87 chose to participate. The results proved that most libraries consider it their task to provide their patrons with access to evaluated links, although for some libraries this task is in reality too time consuming to carry out. The most frequent evaluations proved to be the establishment of the author of the web page, whether the web page had been recently updated and to make sure the links on the evaluated web page were not broken. The respondents also saw a strong connection between the web pages top domain and its reliability. The respondents with large link collections proved to be more active in their search for new links.

Abstract:
The purpose of the present Bachelor’s thesis is to contribute to the library and information science research on how author visits for an adult target group at public libraries in Sweden as a phenomenon can be understood in relation to the public library’s societal function. The questions asked were, firstly: which goals are present in the author visit activities? And secondly: what functions does the public library hold in regard to the author visit activities? Qualitative interviews with representatives from five public libraries have been employed as a method for collecting data. The empirical data was analyzed using a qualitative content analysis method. The theoretical framework consists of the concepts in “the four space” model by Henrik Jochumsen, Casper Hvenegaard Rasmussen and Dorte Skot-Hansen. It is found that the public library through the author visit activities supports several, but not all, of the goals presented in the model. It is also found that the public library through the author visit activities to a greater degree works as inspiration and meeting space than learning and performative space. The study concluded that author visit activities at the public library holds many possibilities in regard to goals and functions of the library.

Abstract:
The purpose of the master thesis was to reflect and analyze music library activities and policies in the public libraries in the area around the city of Borås, in the south-western part of Sweden. With this thesis I also wanted to look at the interaction between the public libraries, the music school and the music associations in the same area. To investigate these matters, qualitative method was used in the form of interviews with seven librarians from seven different libraries and five representatives of different local music organizations. Other methods used were observations and source studies. The literature used discusses the role of the music department of public libraries as well as that of a music librarian working in a public library. I have furthermore considered what the national and local culture policy documents say when it comes to promoting peoples access to music through the public library. The interviews showed that the buying and lending of music recordings was a big part of the music service of the libraries that were included in the study. The study also showed that there were clear differences between the respondents views on the role of the music library. Also, I found few examples of interaction between the public libraries and the different music organisations in the same area.

The aim of this Masters thesis is to examine the importance of public libraries for individuals in their everyday life and to study the differences in views between the individuals. Questions posed in this study are: What do public libraries mean to individuals? Which differences between individuals views of the public library are to be found? What is the reason for differences to occur? The analysis is based upon qualitative interviews with six persons, four women and two men between 31 and 55 years of age. The theoretical starting points are Anderson and Skot-Hansens theory of four different roles of public libraries and Bourdieus theory of lifestyle. The study acts on a hermeneutic attitude. We have been able to illustrate how individuals see upon public libraries and its importance to them. We have also been able to perceive patterns, which show why some do not visit a public library. The opinions of the influence of the library are divided due to the informants economic capital salary and occupation and cultural capital education and cultural interests according to Bourdieus theory of lifestyle. Finally we have been able to illustrate that different ways of living the everyday life can have importance of how people regard the public library.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how public libraries in sparsely populated areas  work with integration-promoting activities and elucidate how the conditions of the public libraries affect this work. We have applied a qualitative  method in this thesis and the  empirical data were collected through five interviews with library staff from three different public libraries in Västerbotten. We have used thematic analysis to identify codes and themes in the empirical material. Among other things, library staff feel that lack of resources, good collaboration and infrastructure in the local community affect the libraries’ ability to work  towards integration. The study’s results were further analyzed on the basis of Andersson & Skot-Hansen’s theory of the library’s four main functions in order to consider within which  functions libraries work to promote  integration, and in what way the local community influences the work.

Abstract:
We are currently living under a world wide COVID-19 pandemic. Due to restrictions in peoples every day life, people getting ill and dying there might be a risk of increase of mental illness in society. The purpose of this thesis is to take a closer look at how Swedish public libraries are using methods like shared reading and bibliotherapy as a way to cope with mental illness within society. What do librarians think about the possibility of using reading as a way to heal mental illness? What do they think about skill development within shared reading and bibliotherapy, and what are the opportunities for them to gain that development? What role does the librarian play in all this? Interviews with 4 librarians working within bigger and smaller city public libraries have been conducted as a method. 2 of them are working with shared reading on a daily basis, 1 of which is working within custody/prison enviroment whilst the remaining 2 do not have any experience in working with shared reading nor bibliotherapy.Theory used for the thesis analysis is David Russel and Caroline Shrode’s concepts of identification, catharsis and insight. The analysis also makes use of Elizabeth Brewster’s development of said theory and the use of 4 different kinds of bibliotherapy namely informative, escapist, social and emotional bibliotherapy. Results show how these theories are implemented in practice when used by librarians in order to help changing values, thinking and behaviour amongst inmates and people suffereing from mental health issues. Also, results show how libraries and other organizations like the public healthcare currently co-operate and how they can develop their co-operation for a future in which we might see an increase of mental health issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim with this thesis is to fill a knowledge gap regarding how young adults (20-25 year old) views and experience video games in libraries and how they feel libraries work and uses videogames. This because the problem lays in the fact that very few studies has been made regarding young adults and their experience and views with videogames. There have been studies concerning the libraries work, handling and views regarding young adults and videogames. The theory model use in this thesis is Jochumsen, Hvenegaard & Skot-Hansens model that divides libraries into four spaces. Its use here is to see the functions videogames can have in the public library through young adults own thoughts and experiences on the matter. It was used together with a qualitative semi-structured group interview, with three groups and in total six informants. The results showed that while the informants viewed positive on videogames in the library it also showed the informants didn’t have a need for borrowing or using the videogames in the public library. In conclusion we can see that the social aspects are regarded highly but sorely missed according by the informants. More social factors may be of more interests. Borrowing videogames are not something the informants’ feelt they needed but they do view it as a positive function of the library. However a social activity that allows users to be able to meet and talk with likeminded about videogames felt the informants was maybe needed today more than just borrowing and/or playing videogames.

Abstract:
This Master thesis aims to study the relation between Swedish governmental cultural policy and cultural events at two Swedish public libraries. The Masters thesis demonstrates how national cultural policy regulates every part of the public library. This demonstration is a result based upon national cultural policy documents and interviews with employees at two public libraries in Sweden. The conclusion that national cultural policy regulates this part of the public library is drawn with help of the circle of culture as applied in Culture Studies and Michel Foucault theories of power. The thesis contains the answer of four questions, two involving cultural policy and the other two events at the library. The main question of this thesis is the same as the title; How does governmental cultural policy regulate event activities at the public library? The conclusion of all these questions shows that the relation between governmental cultural policy and the activity of events at public libraries is strong in several ways.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate what functions the public library has for parents of small children. If and how they make use of the library and what their opinion is about it. The research questions are: Which functions does the public library have for parents of small children? How do parents of small children use the library and what opinion do they have about it? Which factors have an impact on the parents of small children and how do they influence their use of and opinion about the public library and the functions of the library? The theoretical approach is based on Henrik Jochumsen and Casper Hvenegaard Rasmussen’s model of the social room and the lifestyles and Marianne Andersson and Dorte Skot-Hansen’s model of the public library’s functions. To answer our research questions we have made seven qualitative interviews with parents of small children. The study showed that the parents use the library frequently and that they for instance borrow children’s books, films, CDs, computer games and take part in story-times. The parents are generally satisfied with the library. The public library has a function as a cultural center, knowledge center, information center and social center to the parents. Examples of the factors that affect the parents are: the children’s age, ethnicity, level of education, profession, number of children, other sources than the library, if they are first time parents, previous experiences of library, the role of parenthood, personal preferences and access to Internet at home.

Abstract:
This Masters thesis examines the position of films in Swedish public libraries. We have, by way of comparing various statistical data, determined that the status of film in public libraries is week. We have completed earlier research by mapping what genealogical, discursive patterns that could be outlined in the Swedish government reports from 1949 until today, focussing on the activity goals and media policy of the public library. We have, on the basis of Foucaults theories on genealogy and archaeology, where text documents are considered to be meta-descriptions giving each other authority, analyzed if there any discursive excluding or contextual formulations exist in the usage of the language concerning the goals and the media attitude of public libraries. We have mapped contextual discursive formulations that to the commissioners have become neutral starting points for their assumptions and conclusions. Our conclusion is that the strongest discursive formulations can be found during the 80s. The promotion of reading and the objectives of the Swedish language in the nine-year compulsory school, is suddenly made a task and objective of the public libraries in the official reports during that period. The view regarding different media is strongly unequal. The book is considered to be superior, threatened by other media. We also find that the official investigations are supporting the academic classification that Bourdieu has pointed out, with the film medium considered an inferior form of culture.

Abstract:
The study explores the amount of books and other media containing LGBT themes available and the activities aimed towards LGBT people in Swedish public libraries. A comparison was also made between libraries with a LGBT-certification and a study of the librarians' opinions about the certification and their work with LGBT-issues. This is done through a survey sent to a sample of Swedish public libraries and all libraries with a LGBT-certification. The results show that media stocks and activities directed toward LGBT people is relatively small, the work of the LGBT-certified library was on average larger. The librarians were generally positive about the activities towards LGBT people but felt that these activities should be expanded.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to see how the Swedish public libraries present e-books on their website. This study has tried to answer the following questions:1. How do the public libraries construct their definitions of the word e-book, and what patterns are there in the definitions?2. How is the e-book definition presented in the context of the public library websites? This study has formulated its own theoretical framework in regards to how you can categorize definitions in four different categories to help see the way a definition is constructed. The framework also contains how different parts of the definition work towards the purpose of the definition. This study has been conducted through a content analysis. Among the public libraries we have studied, we have not observed a definition that was generally used for the word e-book. However the similarities between the definitions were plenty. The definitions most used were descriptive definitions. They tended to contain the same elements but were expressed in a variety of ways. The result showed consistency with the literature in the field. We have also observed that the public library website tends to categorize the information on and/or definition of e-books below a variety of terms. We have also observed that the definition tends to be the first thing mentioned in the part about e-books. The definition tended to be placed above the fold on the webpage.

Abstract:
The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to do a comparativecase study between a public library in Sweden and one in England. Our aim is to examine what factors affect alibrarian in charge of purchasing fiction for adults and to what degree. We have used two methods of study, specifically semi-constructed interviews with two librarians and text analysis of policies in place at each library respectively. Our research questions share the above mentioned context and should therefore be read with that backdrop:-How is selection and purchase covered in the policies?-What selection criteria are used by the respondents?-What differences are there regarding the decision making? -How can the viewpoints be explained? Our analytical framework was based on three arguments namely market demand, quality and social inclusion when examining our material. The analysis shows that there are differences in what policies are used in the two libraries and to what degree they influence the purchasing process. The market demand and customer requests affect the selection criteria in both countries. The decision making is group-based in the Swedish public library and largely made on an individual basis in its English counterpart. The conclusions from our study are that there is a clear dominance of market demand and social inclusion in the two public libraries as to what influences adult fiction purchasing. Library policies and the behavior they drive, coupled with the drive to achieve high turnover rates are part of the reason why.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the use of Internet at Swedish public libraries. The author asks whether public libraries should or should not limit access to information available on the Internet. Starting from the American discussion, concerning Internet at public libraries, the author shows the Swedish attitudes. The paper demonstrates that many Swedish public libraries have adopted rules forbidding retrieval of certain kinds of information, such as hard-core pornography and racist propaganda. The persons in charge of such actions claim that public libraries should provide high-quality educational literature and should not spread mass-produced, provocative information. The author asserts that public libraries, which have chosen to limit access to the Internet, should avoid doing so, since they are on a collision course with Swedish legislation on freedom of speech.
