Abstract:
The responses of inbred heat-tolerant FOK rats to cold were compared with those of Wistar King A/H (WKAH) and Std:Wistar (WSTR) strains. The fall of colonic temperature during cold exposure was unexpectedly smaller in FOK than in other groups, but the onset of shivering was delayed in FOK. Norepinephrine (NE)-induced in vivo oxygen consumption and the mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 level of brown adipose tissue (BAT) were not different among the groups, but the cold-induced increases in in vivo oxygen consumption as well as plasma glycerol and free fatty acids were higher in FOK than in other groups. In vitro NE-induced oxygen consumption of BAT was less in FOK than WSTR, but not WKAH. The magnitude of the NE-induced increase in blood flow through BAT was higher in FOK than in other groups. These results suggest that FOK paradoxically have a high capacity for nonshivering thermogenesis in spite of their high capacity for heat tolerance, probably due to an increased lipid utilization and improved circulation of BAT.

Abstract:
The FOK is an inbred rat strain with a genotypic adaptation to hot environments. The present study compared the thermoeffector thresholds and preferred ambient temperatures (Tpref) of the FOK rat with those of other rat strains. Male FOK, WKAH, and Donryu rats were used. First, they were loosely restrained and placed individually in a metabolic chamber with an ambient temperature of 26.0°C. Their hypothalamic temperature (Thy), tail skin temperature (Tsk), and heat production ( M) were measured. After thermal equilibrium had been attained, the rats were gradually warmed and then cooled using an intravenous thermode. The threshold Thy values for tail skin vasodilation and cold-induced thermogenesis were defined as the points at which sharp increases in Tskand M occurred, respectively. The two thresholds of the FOK rat were lower than those of the WKAH and Donryu rats. In a second set of experiments, the FOK and WKAH rats were placed individually in a thermocline. Their intra-abdominal temperatures (Tab) were measured by a biotelemetry system, and the rats’ Tpref values were estimated with the thermal gradient. Mean Tab and Tpref over a 24-h period for the FOK rat were significantly lower than those of the WKAH rat. The results suggest that in the FOK rat the control ranges of autonomic and behavioral thermoregulation are lower than those of the other rat strains examined. This contributes to the maintenance of core temperature at low levels.

Abstract:
Background: Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) is still a major problem globally and especially in Africa. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to TB in the past and studies have found vitamin D deficiency to be common among Ugandan TB patients. The functional activity of vitamin D is dependent on the genotype of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphic genes. Recent findings have indicated that VDR polymorphisms may cause increased resistance or susceptibility to TB. The vitamin D ligand and its receptor play a pivotal role in innate immunity by eliciting antimicrobial activity, which is important in prevention of TB. The fok I vitamin D receptor gene has extensively been examined in TB patients but findings so far have been inconclusive. Objectives: This study sought to investigate the frequency distribution of the VDR fok I gene polymorphisms in pulmonary TB patients and controls. Methods: A pilot case control study of 41 newly diagnosed TB patients and 41 healthy workers was set up. Vitamin D receptor fok I gene was genotyped. Results: The frequency distribution of fok I genotype in Ugandan TB patients was 87.8% homozygous-dominant (FF), 7.3% (Ff) heterozygous and 4.8% (ff) homozygous recessive. For normal healthy subjects the frequencies were (FF) 92.6%, (Ff) 2.4% and (ff) 4.8%. No significant difference was observed in the FF and ff genotypes among TB patients and controls. The Ff heterozygous genotype distribution appeared more in TB patients than in controls. A significant difference was observed in the fok I genotype among gender p value 0.02. No significant difference was observed in ethnicity, p value 0.30. Conclusions: The heterozygous Ff fok I genotype may be associated with TB in the Ugandan population.

Abstract:
Compared with other rat strains, the inbred FOK rat is extremely heat tolerant. This increased heat tolerance is due largely to the animal's enhanced saliva spreading abilities. The aims of the present study were to 1) quantify the heat tolerance capacity of FOK rats and 2) determine the regulatory mode of the enhanced salivary cooling in these animals. Various strains of rats were acutely exposed to heat. In the heat-intolerant strains, saliva spreading was insufficient and the core temperature (Tc) rose rapidly. In contrast, FOK rats maintained an elevated Tc plateau (39.5 ± 0.7°C) for 5-6 h over a wide range of ambient temperatures (Ta) (37.5-42.5°C). In hot environments the FOK rats secreted copious amounts of saliva and spread it over more than the entire ventral body surface. FOK rats had a low Tc threshold for salivation, and the salivation rate increased linearly in proportion to the Tc deviation from the threshold. No strain difference or temperature effect was observed in the saliva secretion rate from in vitro submandibular glands perfused by sufficient doses of ACh. These results suggest that 1) the ability of FOK rats to maintain a moderate steady-state hyperthermia (39.5 ± 0.7°C) over a wide Ta range is enabled by a lowered threshold Tc for salivation and functional negative-feedback control of saliva secretion and 2) strain differences in ability to endure heat stress are mainly attributable to changes in the thermoregulatory control system rather than altered secretory abilities of the salivary glands.

Abstract:
Abstract The FokI family of short interspersed repetitive elements (SINEs) has been found only in the genomes of charr fishes (genus Salvelinus). In an analysis of the insertion of FokI SINEs using PCR, we characterized six loci at which FokI SINEs have been inserted into the genomes of Salvelinus alpinus (Arctic charr) and/or S. malma (Dolly Varden). An analysis of one locus (Fok-223) suggested that a sister relationship exists between S. alpinus and S. malma and the SINE at this locus might have been inserted in a common ancestor of these two species, being fixed in all extant populations examined. By contrast, SINEs at two other loci (Fok-211 and Fok-206) were present specifically in the genome of S. alpinus, with polymorphism among populations of this species. Moreover, the presence or absence of the SINEs of the other three loci (Fok-214, Fok-217, and Fok-600) varied among populations of these two species. The most plausible interpretation of this result is that SINEs, which were ancestrally polymorphic in the genome of a common ancestor of these two species, are involved in an ongoing process of differential sorting and subsequent fixation in the various populations of each species.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to demonstrate resistance adaptation based on genotypic adaptation and to develop an inbred rat strain with genotypic resistance adaptation to a hot environment. Survival time (ST) at an ambient temperature (Ta) of 42.5 degrees C was determined without appreciable thermal damage. Rats with the longest ST were sibmated over 30 generations and designated FOK. The ST, evaporative water loss, and body water economy increased rapidly during the first 10-15 generations, followed by a more gradual increase. The FOK rat resisted a Ta of 42.5 degrees C for > 5 h; this ability was hereditary. Body size progressively decreased during the early generations. The ST was longer (P < 0.01) and evaporative water loss was significantly higher (P < 0.01) in the FOK rat compared with three other strains. Tail lengths in the FOK rat were slightly shorter than those of three controls (P < 0.01). The heat loss system in the FOK rat may depend on the ability to mobilize and evaporate body fluids efficiently. FOK rats can be used for phenotypic comparisons with other strains, as well as in molecular genetic studies on thermoregulation, osmoregulation, and resistance adaptation to heat using recombinant inbred and recombinant congenic lines.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: To investigate the associations of serum vitamin D and Fok I polymorphism of its receptor (VDR) with unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion (URSA). Methods: Ninety URSA patients and another 104 healthy pregnant women were selected as URSA and control groups, respectively. 25-Hydroxyvitamin D [25-(OH)D] level was detected by chemiluminescence. VDR gene Fok I polymorphism was analyzed by PCR, and the distribution of genotype frequency was calculated by Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium test. Association between Fok I polymorphism and susceptibility to URSA was investigated by logistic regression analysis. Results: Gestational age, uterine height, waist circumference, 25-(OH)D level and proportions of Fok I FF and Ff genotypes were significantly lower in the URSA group (P<0.05). Compared with ff genotype, risk of URSA reduced for Ff and FF genotypes. Compared with allele f, risk of URSA was lower for allele F. 25-(OH)D level of ff genotype was significantly lower in the URSA group, which was lower than that of FF genotype (P<0.05). Compared with women with 25-(OH)D level >30 ng/mL and F allele (FF+Ff), the risk of URSA increased 2.45-, 2.43- and 5.34-fold for those with 25-(OH)D level >30 ng/mL and ff genotype, with 25-(OH)D level ≤30 ng/mL, and with ff genotype and 25-(OH)D level ≤30 ng/mL, respectively. Conclusions: The 25-(OH)D level of the URSA group was significantly lower than that of normal pregnant women. Probably, VDR gene Fok I polymorphism is associated with URSA occurrence, and allele F decreases the risk. The risk of URSA dramatically increases in women with ff genotype and 25-(OH)D deficiency.

Abstract:
The main goal of this study was to examine developmental trends in the accuracy of feeling-ofknowing (FOK) judgements given that previous work in this issue had yielded inconsistent results. Although most research conducted with preschoolers and young school children has reported increasing accuracy with increasing age, a methodologically improved study (Butterfield, Nelson, & Peck, 1988) did not confirm such a trend. The present study was based on such an improved design but included different age groups (7-, 8-, 9-, and 10-year-olds). A second goal was to explore the basis of FOK judgements, by comparing the traditional “trace-based” view with the “trace accessibility” model developed by Koriat (1993). Whereas the former assumes a two-stage process of monitoring and retrieval, the latter proposes that FOK judgements are based on retrieval attempts and determined by the amount of information that can be spontaneously generated, regardless of its correctness. As a main result, no developmental trends in the accuracy of FOK judgements were found. FOK accuracy was generally low but above chance for all age groups. Furthermore, the findings support the “trace accessibility” model in that dissociations between feeling of knowing and knowing could be demonstrated. That is, although FOK judgements regarding subsequent item recognition were generally high whenever an answer could be generated and much lower when no answer was generated at free retrieval, regardless of its correctness, recognition performance was comparatively low for previous nonretrieved and incorrectly remembered items and close to ceiling for correctly remembered items.

Analizálják a terhelés hatását a görbület progressziójára. Anyag és módszer: 25 AIS-ben szenvedő leány [scoliosis típusa King 1–2–3, Cobb fok átlag dorsalisan 27 fok (min. 15, max. 42), lumbálisan 25 fok (min. 14, max. 43)] került a prospektív vizsgálatba. Egészségesként illesztett kontrollt alkalmaztak. Eredmények: Vizsgálataik alapján az extenzió szignifikáns növekedése összefügg – ok-okozati kérdés eldöntése nélkül – a scoliotikus gerinc lordoscoliosis voltával. A jobb oldali rotáció szignifikáns emelkedése AIS-ben kifejezi, hogy sokszor első jel a háti szakaszon a torzió fokozódása, mely nagyobb mértékű, mint maga a jobbra ívelő görbület. Ugyanakkor a mindkét irányú oldalhajlás AIS-ben észlelt szignifikáns csökkenése nem mutat pozitív korrelációt a scoliosis ívének mértékével. Cobb 30 fokig a pp szög és Cobb fok jól korrelál, 30 Cobb fok feletti scoliosisban a korreláció gyenge. Következtetések: A klinikai vizsgálat során tulajdonképpen a „pp szöget” látjuk és nem magát a Cobb fokot, így – sajnos – a radiológiai elemzést CMS rendszerrel sem sikerül teljes mértékben még a betegkövetésben sem elkerülni. A terhelés mind a gibbus mértékére, mind a háti görbület nagyságára jelentős befolyást gyakorol.

Abstract:
Teachers working with ethnic minority students who have different language and cultural background from their own may have little knowledge of their students in out-of-school context. This lack of students’ knowledge and resources outside of the school may lead to deficit thinking regarding this non-dominated group as intellectually and academically deficient. Underachievement and low study engagement by HMông ethnic minority students in disadvantaged primary schools in Vietnam evidence a need for more effective teaching practices to support these minority students’ learning and reduce inequality within their educational environment. The funds of knowledge (FoK) approach attempts to overcome teachers’ perceptions of ethnic minority students and their knowledge through learning about these students’ FoK and incorporating these insights into the teaching practices. The purpose of this study is to explore how Kinh teachers identify HMông students’ sources of FoK in order to support their teaching/learning practices. This research employs qualitative educational research method together with case study method to examine the way Kinh primary teachers identify HMông students’ sources of FoK. The findings indicate that Kinh primary teachers identified HMông students’ different sources of FoK that the teachers could beneficially be drawing on to empowering HMông children’ participation, achievement and Kinh teachers’ teaching practices.

Abstract:
Objective. It has been stated that brain cancers are an increasingly serious issue in many parts of the world. The aim of our study was to determine a possible relationship between Vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms and the risk of glioma and meningioma.Methods. We investigated the VDR Taq-I and VDR Fok-I gene polymorphisms in 100 brain cancer patients (including 44 meningioma cases and 56 glioma cases) and 122 age-matched healthy control subjects. This study was performed by polymerase chain reaction-based restriction fragment length polymorphism (RF LP).Results. VDR Fok-I ff genotype was significantly increased in meningioma patients (15.9%) compared with controls (2.5%), and carriers of Fok-I ff genotype had a 6.47-fold increased risk for meningioma cases. There was no significant difference between patients and controls for VDR Taq-I genotypes and alleles.Conclusions. We suggest that VDR Fok-I genotypes might affect the development of meningioma.

Abstract:
Research shows that the exclusion of families’ funds of knowledge (FoK) from the curriculum contributes to low levels of school engagement. This study is part of an ongoing research project aiming to promote school engagement among students from immigrant backgrounds through the strategic use of FoK. We provide an overview of the project design and explain how it has been implemented in the specific context of early childhood education in a school in Catalonia. A qualitative approach is used to assess the effect of the process from the teacher perspective, contrasting positive aspects with some of the difficulties experienced. We conclude that including families’ FoK in pedagogical practice can contribute towards improving student engagement and fostering more inclusive educational environments.

Abstract:
AbstractThe ability to retrieve and monitor factual information varying in datedness (i.e., dated vs. contemporary) was examined in healthy older adults and patients in an early phase of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Subjects were given free recall and multiple-choice recognition tests of 48 general knowledge questions. For all questions not responded to in recall, subjects made fecling-of-knowing (FOK) judgments. Results indicated dementia-related deficits in both recall and recognition, although both groups showed better recall and recognition with the dated compared with the contemporary questions. Importantly, despite deficits in fact retrieval, the AD patients showed intact monitoring of stored knowledge, as indicated by equivalent FOK accuracy for both groups. In addition, FOK accuracy was similar for the dated and the contemporary information in both groups, suggesting independence between level of general knowledge and the ability to supervise information stored in memory. Abstract We used a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) strategy and restriction fragment polymorphism analysis to evaluate all 19 exons of the plasminogen (PLG) gene in a Japanese patient with congenital PLG deficiency and her family members. She presented with cerebral infarction. Sequence analysis following amplification of each exon and its flanking regions showed a single T to C transition in exon 14, which changed a Ser572 codon (TCC) to Pro572 codon (CCC). Since this mutation generates a new Fok I site, the Fok I digestion pattern of the PCR-amplified exon 14 fragments from each family member was analyzed. In all cases, the patterns were consistent with the activities and antigen levels of plasma PLG in those members. Furthermore, all PCR- amplified exon 14 fragments from 15 normal individuals were not restricted with Fok I endonuclease. We conclude that a T to C transition in exon 14 identified in the propositus is responsible for PLG deficiency inherited in this Japanese family with thrombotic episodes.

Abstract:
Purpose. Dental caries is a multifactorial infectious disease. In this study, we investigated whether single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene were associated with susceptibility to permanent tooth caries in Chinese adolescents. Method. A total of 200 dental caries patients and 200 healthy controls aged 12 years were genotyped for VDR gene polymorphisms using the PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) assay. All of them were examined for their oral and dental status with the WHO criteria, and clinical information such as the Decayed Missing Filled Teeth Index (DMFT) was evaluated. Genomic DNA was extracted from the buccal epithelial cells. The four polymorphic SNPs (Bsm I, Taq I, Apa I, and Fok I) in VDR were assessed for both genotypic and phenotypic susceptibilities. Results. Among the four examined VDR gene polymorphisms, the increased frequency of the CT and CC genotype of the Fok I VDR gene polymorphism was associated with dental caries in 12-year-old adolescent, compared with the controls (X2 = 17.813, p≤0.001). Moreover, Fok I polymorphic allele C frequency was significantly increased in the dental caries cases, compared to the controls (X2 = 14.144, p≤0.001, OR = 1.730, 95% CI = 1.299–2.303). However, the other three VDR gene polymorphisms (Bsm I, Taq I, and Apa I) showed no statistically significant differences in the caries groups compared with the controls. Conclusion. VDR-Fok I gene polymorphisms may be associated with susceptibility to permanent tooth caries in Chinese adolescent.

Abstract:
Abstract Stability and performance are crucial characteristics for aerospace vehicles. The ability to investigate the aerodynamics and performance of rockets gives an insight into their stability before flight and the potential for design and performance enhancements. For the past 13 years, the rocketry Division within the students’ space Association of Warsaw University of technology has been developing sounding rockets of different designs and mission profiles. Two rockets have been chosen for the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) campaigns, FOK and Twardowsky. This paper describes the mathematical model of aerodynamic loads used by the Division for sounding rocket simulation, followed by CFD campaigns for the two rockets. The results of the CFD analysis are then used to calculate the rockets’ aerodynamic derivatives according to a previously defined mathematical model.

Abstract:
Catch crops are an effective method for reducing nitrogen (N) leaching in agriculture, but the mineralization of incorporated catch crop residue N is difficult to predict and model. We conducted a five-month incubation experiment using fresh residue from three catch crops (hairy vetch, fodder radish and ryegrass) with three temperature treatments (2 °C, 15 °C and 2–15 °C variable temperature) and two termination methods (glyphosate and untreated). Mineral N (ammonium and nitrate) in soil was quantified at 0, 1, 2, 4, 8 and 20 weeks of incubation. Ammonium accumulation from residue decomposition showed a lag at low and variable temperature, but subsequent nitrification of the ammonium did not. Mineral N accumulation over time changed from exponential to sigmoidal mode at low and variable temperature. Incubation temperature significantly affected mineralization rates in a first-order kinetics (FOK) model, while plant type and termination method did not. Plant type alone had a significant effect on the final mineralized fraction of added catch crop N. FOK models modified to accommodate an initial lag were fitted to the incubation results and produced better goodness-of-fit statistics than simple FOK. We suggest that initial lags in residue decomposition should be investigated for the benefit of mineralization predictions in cropping models.
