Abstract:
In 2007, we published the results of a genome-wide screen for ORFs that affect the frequency of Rad52 foci in yeast. That paper was published within the constraints of conventional online publishing tools, and it provided only a glimpse into the actual screen data. New tools in the JCB DataViewer now show how these data can—and should—be shared.

Abstract:
Aim. Molecular-genetic analysis of the chickpea genotypes for foc0, foc3, foc4 resistance genes to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp ciceris. Methods. Extraction and purification of DNA, spectrophotometry, polymerase chain reaction, electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gels. Results. 35 chickpea lines and varieties of Ukrainian and foreign breeding characterized according to genotyping on foc0, foc3, foc4 genes of resistance to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp ciceris by the microsatellite markers TA59, TR19 and TR59. Fragments of the expected size for all markers were obtained for samples, for which the resistance level was fixed to certain races. Match between data on the presence of a amplification fragment of a certain size and resistance level among other samples is not found. Conclusions. For 35 chickpea varieties and lines the allele state of foc0, foc3, foc4 genes of resistance to the F. oxysporum f. sp ciceris races 0, 3, 4 is established. The variety ‘Pam’yat’ is recommended as a control of resistance to F. oxysporum f. sp ciceris races 0, 3, 4 in the southern Ukraine conditions. Abstract:
Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, the causative agent of Panama disease, is classified into three races: Foc1, Foc2, and Foc4. However, the histological characteristics, the accumulation of fusaric acid (FA), and resistant gene expression in banana infected with different races remain unclear. In this study, we compared the infection processes, FA contents, and gene expression levels in a Cavendish banana cultivar (Musa AAA Brazilian) inoculated with Foc1 and Foc4. Results showed that Foc4 can rapidly extend from the roots to the leaves, whereas Foc1 expands slowly from the roots to the rhizomes but cannot expand further upward. In addition, the colonization of plants by Foc4 was significantly higher compared with Foc1, as was the content of FA in those infected plant tissues. We observed that a large amount of starch granules was produced in the rhizomes and the number of starch granules was significantly higher after infection with Foc1 than after infection with Foc4. We further found that starch has an important inhibitory effect on the phytotoxicity induced by FA, thus leading to more resistance to the pathogens in the plants with high amounts of starch accumulation than in those with a low amount of starch accumulation. Moreover, the expression levels of 10 defense-related genes were analyzed and the results showed that the induction levels of those genes were higher after infection with Foc1 than after infection with Foc4. These results suggest that the observed differences in the invasion of host tissues and FA accumulation, and the number of starch granules and expression of defense-related genes, may contribute to a difference in virulence between the two races and the resulting difference in host resistance response, respectively.

Full text
Abstract:
With new three-segment piecewise-linearity in the classic Chua’s system, two new types of 2-scroll and 3-scroll Chua’s attractors are found in this paper. By changing the outer segment slope of the three-segment piecewise-linearity as positive, the new 2-scroll Chua’s attractor has emerged from one zero index-1 saddle-focus and two symmetric stable nonzero node-foci. In particular, by newly introducing a piecewise-linear control function, an improved Chua’s system only with one zero index-2 saddle-focus and two stable nonzero node-foci is constructed, from which a 3-scroll Chua’s attractor is converged. Some remarks for Chua’s nonlinearities and the generating chaotic attractors are discussed, and the stabilities at the three equilibrium points are then analyzed, upon which the emerging mechanisms of the novel 2-scroll and 3-scroll Chua’s attractors are explored in depth. Furthermore, an analog electronic circuit built with operational amplifier and analog multiplier is designed and hardware circuit experiments are measured to verify the numerical simulations. These novel 2-scroll and 3-scroll Chua’s attractors reported in this paper are completely different from the classic Chua’s attractors, which will enrich the dynamics of the classic Chua’s system.

Plant Disease 101, no. 12 (December 2017): 2073–78. http://dx.doi.org/10.1094/pdis-04-17-0467-re.

Abstract:
Fusarium wilt of banana, which is caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, is one of the most serious diseases of banana. F. oxysporum f. sp. cubense race 1 (Foc1) and race 4 (Foc4) are the most prevalent pathogens of banana cultivars in the world. To understand the differences in the infection processes between Foc1 and Foc4, green fluorescent protein-tagged strains of F. oxysporum f. sp. cubense tropical race 4 (FocTR4) and Foc1 were used to inoculate ‘Brazil Cavendish’ banana. At 2 days postinoculation (dpi), it was observed that the spores and hyphae of both Foc1 and Foc4 attached to the root hairs and root epidermis. At 3 dpi, the hyphae of both Foc1 and Foc4 were found in the vascular tissues of roots. However, Foc4 was observed in the parenchymal cells of banana root, whereas Foc1 was not found in parenchymal cells at 7 dpi. Furthermore, few Foc1 hyphae were observed in a few xylems whereas many more Foc4 hyphae were present in many xylems and phloems. Foc4 was observed in the vascular tissues of banana rhizomes, whereas no Foc1 was found in rhizomes 2 months after inoculation. The attachment process in F. oxysporum f. sp. cubense infection was further studied with scanning electron microscopy. Foc4 was observed to penetrate into banana roots from the intercellular space of the epidermis and wounds, whereas Foc1 mainly penetrated from the wounds but not from the intercellular space of the epidermis. Therefore, direct root penetration and rhizome vascular colonization by F. oxysporum f. sp. cubense are the key steps in the successful infection of Brazil Cavendish.

Abstract:
Kyungmi Choi, Daria Soon-Young Seog, and Incheol Choi. 2022. Studies in Modern Grammar 115, 119-137. Effects of Focus on Forms and Focus on Form Instruction on Middle-Aged and Elderly Learners’ English Grammar Acquisition. This study, to find an effective way for older adult learners to acquire English, aims to investigate the extent instruction needs to be intentional or explicit. Traditionally, the issue was dealt with in terms of the effect of two instructional approaches—focus on forms (FonFs) and focus on form (FonF). The results of the grammaticality judgment test with audio stimuli show that FonFs instruction is a more appropriate method for middle-aged and elderly groups’ acquisition of grammatical knowledge than FonF instruction. In addition, it suggests that even among older adult learners, age still matters. That is, “the younger, the better” applies to adult learners of age 40 and above.

Abstract:
Tocopherols (T) and tocotrienols (T3) were analysed using HPLC and vitamin E content was calculated in selected cereal grains and their different morphological fractions. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cv. Almari, barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cv. Gregor, rye (Secale cereale L.) cv. Dańkowskie Złote, oat (Avena sativa L.) cv. Sławko and buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench) cv. Kora were used in this study. The highest level of tocopherols was found in dehulled buckwheat and in its fraction of the endosperm with the embryo, where γ-T was found to be the main tocopherol (94.1% and 93.7% of total, respectively). α-T and β-T were the main isomers found in wheat, barley, rye and oat. β-T3 was the main tocotrienol found in wheat and oat, whereas α-T3 predominated in barley and rye. Small quantities of γ-T3 were only found in barley. No tocotrienols were found in buckwheat grains and their morphological fractions. The content of tocopherols and tocotrienols in the fractions of endosperm with embryo was 10–30% lower than in whole grain. The fraction originating from rye was the richest one in total tocols, followed by wheat and barley. Similarly, among the analysed fractions of pericarp and testa the richest fraction was that from rye, followed by wheat and barley. Extrusion cooking caused a significant decrease in tocopherols and tocotrienols, expressed in terms of biological activity of vitamin E, from 63 to 94%, depending on the cultivar examined. α-Tocopherol and α-tocotrienol were least resistant to hydrothermal processing. The remaining tocols were more stable, though the degree of their degradation reached up to 50%.
