Abstract:
Functional neurological disorder (FND) represent a common disorder with significant socio-economic impact. In this context and alongside recent new neuroscientific insights, FND attracts a growing interest both in clinical practice and academic activities. New international recommendation and expert opinions suggest that therapy of FND should be a tailored multidisciplinary management involving the neurologist, the physiotherapist, and in most cases the psychotherapist/psychiatrist. A first decisive step is the establishment of a definitive diagnosis, based on the presence of clinical positive signs during neurological assessment together with a clear communication and explanation of the diagnosis by the neurologist. A second important step is based on individual therapeutic sessions, involving different disciplines (neurology and psychotherapy or neurology and physiotherapy). Comorbidities, such as pain or fatigue and psychiatric comorbidities (anxiety, depression, dissociation etc.) should be carefully evaluated, as they need an individualized treatment path. New FND clinics have been created worldwide over the last decades to offer such multidisciplinary settings and this article will present the experience of a first Swiss FND clinic created in 2016. The aim is to highlight in the form of a narrative review the current literature supporting the usefulness and importance of FND clinics, by reviewing the latest evidence on multidisciplinary interventions in FND.

Abstract:
Background: The emergence of acute-onset functional neurological symptoms, the focus of this study, is one of three stress responses related to immunisation. This case–control study documents the experience of 61 young people with past or current functional neurological disorder (FND) in relation to the COVID-19 vaccination program in Australia. Methods: Information about the young person’s/parent’s choice and response pertaining to COVID-19 vaccination was collected as part of routine clinical care or FND research program follow-up. Results: 61 young people treated for FND (47 females, mean age = 16.22 years) and 46 healthy controls (34 females, mean age = 16.37 years) were included in the study. Vaccination rates were high: 58/61 (95.1%) in the FND group and 45/46 (97.8%) in the control group. In the FND group, 2 young people (2/61, 3.3%) presented with new-onset FND following COVID-19 vaccination; two young people with resolved FND reported an FND relapse (2/36, 5.56%); and two young people with unresolved FND (2/20, 10.0%) reported an FND exacerbation. In the control group no FND symptoms were reported. Conclusions: Acute-onset FND symptoms following COVID-19 vaccination are uncommon in the general population. In young people prone to FND, COVID-19 vaccination can sometimes trigger new-onset FND, FND relapse, or FND exacerbation.

Abstract:
Objectives/AimsDissociation is a potential mechanism in FND. Although scientific studies report elevated rates of dissociative symptoms in FND, a systematic assessment of the biological and clinical correlates of dissociation in FND is lacking. We aimed to systematically review the current evidence describing dissociative symptoms and disorders in functional neurological disorder (FND), and additionally conduct a meta-analysis of dissociative symptom severity in FND. We also aimed to synthesise the existing data on biological and clinical correlates of dissociation in FND.MethodsWe systematically searched Embase, PsycINFO, and Medline, combining terms for FND and dissociation. Studies were eligible for inclusion if reporting on dissociative symptom scale scores or rates of dissociative disorder in FND samples. Studies were appraised for methodological quality using modified Newcastle-Ottawa criteria. Findings pertaining to dissociative symptoms or disorders, as well as biological and clinical correlates of dissociation in FND samples, were synthesised qualitatively. Dissociative symptom scores were included in a meta-analysis using random and mixed effects models.ResultsTwo-thousand and eighty-eight records were screened and seventy-nine studies were included in the final review. Dissociative symptoms were elevated in FND. The meta-analysis demonstrated a significant elevation in dissociation in FND samples relative to neurological and healthy controls, but not psychiatric controls. Dissociative disorders were frequently co-morbid in FND samples. Psychoform (cognitive) dissociation was more prominent in FND-seizures, whereas somatoform (physical) dissociation tended to be more prominent in FND-motor symptom samples. Dissociation was associated with FND symptom severity or frequency, general psychopathology, and reduced quality of life. Biological correlates of elevated dissociation included structural and functional brain alterations in regions that have previously been implicated in FND, such as the anterior cingulate cortex.ConclusionsDissociative symptoms and disorders are common in FND, and different FND subgroups appear to endorse varying degrees of psychoform or somatoform dissociation. Presence of dissociative symptoms in FND is associated with adverse clinical features; there is therefore a clinical need to assess patients with FND for dissociative symptomatology and to address these symptoms during treatment. Future research should examine dissociation further in different FND subgroups, using measures that distinguish between different types of dissociation, alongside measures of underlying pathophysiology.

Abstract:
AbstractFunctional neurological disorders (FND) are complex and prevalent neuropsychiatric conditions. Importantly, some patients with FND develop acute onset symptoms requiring emergency department (ED) evaluations. Historically, FND was a “rule-out” diagnosis, making assessment and management in the ED difficult. While the rapid triage of potential neurological emergencies remains the initial task, advancements have altered the approach to FND. FND is now a “rule-in” diagnosis based on validated neurological examination signs and semiological features. In this perspective article, we review signs and semiological features that can help guide the initial assessment of FND in the acute setting. Thereafter, we outline potential approaches to introduce a suspected diagnosis of FND to patients in the ED, while emphasizing the need for a comprehensive neurological evaluation. Physical and occupational therapy may be useful adjunct assessments in some individuals. Notably, clinicians in the ED setting are important members of the interdisciplinary approach to FND.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: The term “functional neurological disorder,” or “FND,” applies to disorders whose occurrence of neurological symptoms fluctuate with the patient’s attention to them. However, many other disorders that are not called “FND” nonetheless can also follow this pattern. Consequently, guidelines are unclear for diagnosing “FND.” OBJECTIVE: To review the neurological conditions that follow this pattern, but which have not so far been termed “FND,” to understand their overlap with conditions that have been termed “FND,” and to discuss the rationale for why FND has not been diagnosed for them. METHOD: A systematic review of the PubMed literature registry using the terms “fluctuation,” “inconsistency,” or “attention” did not yield much in the way of these candidate disorders. Consequently, this review instead relied on the author’s personal library of peer-reviewed studies of disorders that have resembled FND but which were not termed this way, due to his longstanding interest in this problem. Consequently, this approach was not systematic and was subjective regarding disease inclusion. RESULTS: This review identified numerous, diverse conditions that generally involve fluctuating neurological symptoms that can vary with the person’s attention to them, but which have not been called “FND.” The literature was unclear for reasons for not referring to “FND” in these instances. CONCLUSION: Most likely because of historical biases, the use of the term “FND” has been unnecessarily restricted. Because at its core FND is an attentionally-influenced disorder that can respond well to behavioral treatments, the field of neurological rehabilitation could benefit by extending the range of conditions that could be considered as “FND” and referred for similar behavioral treatments. Because the term “FND” has been viewed unfavorably by some patients and clinical practitioners and whose treatment is not implied, the alternative term attentionally-modifiable disorder is proposed.

Abstract:
Objective/aimsInteroceptive differences have been proposed as an aetiological factor in functional neurological disorder (FND) but there is limited supportive evidence. Previous studies are few, have mixed findings and assessed only (objective) interoceptive accuracy, but not (metacognitive) interoceptive awareness. The aim of this study was to explore interoception in FND in greater detail, by assessing interoceptive accuracy and awareness in individuals with a range of FND presentations. As dissociative symptoms (e.g., depersonalisation, derealisation) are common in FND and could influence interoception, we sought to examine the effects of induced acute dissociation on interoception. We hypothesised that interoceptive accuracy/awareness would be impaired at baseline in FND relative to healthy controls, but that the differences would be exacerbated following dissociation induction.MethodsTwenty adults with FND were recruited from online FND support groups. Diagnosis was confirmed by medical documentation from a relevant healthcare professional. The FND group was compared to a group of 20 healthy controls recruited from online community groups. A modified heart-beat tracking task measured interoceptive accuracy (correct detection of heart beats) and awareness (confidence judgements). A control task involved counting visually presented geometric shapes. Both tasks were completed before and after a validated dissociation induction procedure (mirror-gazing).ResultsThe FND group reported elevated dissociation at baseline relative to controls (p<0.01) but this difference was larger following mirror-gazing (p<0.001). Interoceptive accuracy did not differ significantly between groups at baseline; however, the FND group had significantly lower accuracy scores following mirror-gazing (p<0.05). There was no effect of group on shape counting accuracy at either timepoint. Confidence ratings on the interoception and shape counting tasks were significantly lower at both timepoints in the FND group relative to controls (all p-values <0.05 or <0.01).ConclusionsIndividuals with FND reported elevated dissociation both before and after a dissociation induction procedure, although this was exacerbated post-dissociation induction. In contrast, interoceptive accuracy was unimpaired at baseline, but impaired following dissociation induction, relative to controls. The FND group showed reduced metacognitive awareness for detection of bodily states and external (visual) stimuli. Future research should better determine the nature of interoceptive deficits in FND and assess the impact of dissociation on a range of cognitive and affective processes relevant to the disorder.

Abstract:
Objectives/AimsChronic pain is commonly reported as a comorbidity in patients with functional neurological disorder (FND) however the prevalence of FND in those presenting with chronic pain is unknown. We aimed to estimate 1) the prevalence of FND in patients seen at a chronic pain clinic and 2) how patients with chronic pain and comorbid FND differ from those without FND in terms of pain characteristics, psychiatric comorbidity, pain management and pain outcome.MethodsRetrospective electronic records review of consecutive new patients attending chronic pain clinics of 8 pain specialists in Lothian from the 1st of August 2019 to the 19thSeptember of 2019. Mean duration of follow up was 25 months. We recorded the clinical features, medication, management and outcome of chronic pain, any lifetime (up to November 2021) diagnoses of functional, FND and psychiatric disorders and undiagnosed neurological symptoms (where it was unclear if symptoms related to FND or another condition).ResultsOf 190 patients attending a chronic pain clinic, 32 (17%) had at least one lifetime diagnosis of FND and an additional 8 (4%) had undiagnosed neurological symptoms. FND diagnoses were functional limb weakness (8%), functional sensory disorder (8%), dissociative seizures (6%), functional cognitive disorder (5%), functional movement disorder (4%) and others (2%). Chronic primary pain (p<0.001), widespread chronic primary pain (p<0.00001) and pain with no precipitating trigger (p<0.01) were more common in pain patients with comorbid FND. A history of depression (p<0.001), anxiety (p<0.05) and suicide attempt (p<0.05) were also more common in these patients. However, patients with chronic pain and comorbid FND did not differ significantly from patients without FND in age, gender, prescribed analgesia (opiates and benzodiazepines) or pain outcome (25% vs 34% pain improved).ConclusionsFND was found in a surprisingly high 17% of new patients at a chronic pain clinic. This may be an underestimate based on an additional 4% of patients with undiagnosed neurological symptoms. Patients with chronic pain and FND are significantly more likely to have chronic primary pain compared to other pain patients but do not experience different pain management or outcome. These results provide further evidence of the important overlap between FND and chronic pain conditions.

Abstract:
ObjectivesWe aimed to identify existing outcome measures for functional neurological disorder (FND), to inform the development of recommendations and to guide future research on FND outcomes.MethodsA systematic review was conducted to identify existing FND-specific outcome measures and the most common measurement domains and measures in previous treatment studies. Searches of Embase, MEDLINE and PsycINFO were conducted between January 1965 and June 2019. The findings were discussed during two international meetings of the FND-Core Outcome Measures group.ResultsFive FND-specific measures were identified—three clinician-rated and two patient-rated—but their measurement properties have not been rigorously evaluated. No single measure was identified for use across the range of FND symptoms in adults. Across randomised controlled trials (k=40) and observational treatment studies (k=40), outcome measures most often assessed core FND symptom change. Other domains measured commonly were additional physical and psychological symptoms, life impact (ie, quality of life, disability and general functioning) and health economics/cost–utility (eg, healthcare resource use and quality-adjusted life years).ConclusionsThere are few well-validated FND-specific outcome measures. Thus, at present, we recommend that existing outcome measures, known to be reliable, valid and responsive in FND or closely related populations, are used to capture key outcome domains. Increased consistency in outcome measurement will facilitate comparison of treatment effects across FND symptom types and treatment modalities. Future work needs to more rigorously validate outcome measures used in this population.

Abstract This applied research study is entitled "Physical Training in the state of Readiness for a Deployed National Force. The objective of this work is to check the importance of Physical Training in the state of readiness for a Deployed National Force in the Theater of Operations in Afghanistan, and whether this is essential or not for the military personnel to respond to all the solicitations during the execution of a mission. The scientific method applied in the preparation of this research is based on the "Handbook of Research in Social Sciences", by Raymond Quivy and Luc Van Campenhoudt, as well as in the "Practical Guide to Scientific Methodology" by Manuela Sarmento. The methods used are inquisitive and inductive, using formal or structured interviews as data collection. The sample consists of Infantry Officers who were incorporated in the Deployed National Forces in Afghanistan, two officers of the Commando Troops Center and three from the Infantry Regiment No. 10 (Paratroopers). The structure of the work consists of five chapters, the first being the introduction, followed by the literature analysis, then the methodology and procedures used; in the fourth we discuss the fieldwork, the presentation, analysis and discussion of the results, and in the fifth and final chapter, the conclusions. The data collection was made through research and subsequent literature analysis, and the collection of experiences by military men who carried out missions within the context of the topic in question, through exploratory interviews. The main contents of this investigation were taken from the formal or structured interviews. Subsequently, we compared the answers given by respondents to the questions made in the interviews, in order to reach a final conclusion on the issue addressed. We can conclude that the Physical Training in the state of readiness for a Deployed National Force is rather important for the execution of the mission, as the force that trains regularly as if it was already deployed, faces the mission more naturally.

Abstract This work of applied research is entitled “The Importance of Physical Training for readiness of Outstanding National Forces (FND) - The Force Protection (FP) of the 5th National Contingent (CN) 2012/2013 in the Theater of Operations (TO) of Afghanistan.” The objective of this research is to understand whether the training plan which recommends readiness is best suited to tasks in the Theater of Operations of Afghanistan and this training plan provides the most diverse conditions, as are inherent in Force Protection missions, materials / equipment, the terrain and the climate / weather. We intend to clarify whether Physical Education Army Regulation prescribes exercises that are sufficient and entirely appropriate for a force of this nature, or if there is some characteristic supplementary training needed for the forces of Comandos Center Troops. The methodology used in conducting the present study consisted essentially of the book "Handbook of Research in Social Sciences" written by Raymond Quivy and Luc Van Campenhoudt. There were also other authors referenced throughout the work that were considered relevant. The interviews resulted in several results, among which are, first, that it is impossible to run the physical training to match those conditions which are found in the Theater of Operations since the climatic / weather conditions will always be contrary to those found in the same Theater of Operations. It was found that the plan of physical training was adequate to Force Protection and extremely targeted given the task of the Force Protection. However a plan of physical training by expert trainers in the field of physical training would result in a common basis for all readiness which should be implemented.

Abstract:
Abstract In the scope, of the Work that Applied in the Inquiry (WAI) we bring the present subject “The Logistic Support Optimization for Nationals Deployed Forces (NDF): Administrative-Financiers procedures for acquisition the goods and services”. The purpose of this inquiry was to investigate the set of procedures that was adopted in some level of the responsibility in the Administration Financial Army system (AFAS) in the scope of the logistic support and administrative-financier to Nationals Deployed Forces. The importance of the logistic, in the worldwide economy is growing in the direction of the value and principles. Since the end of 20th century that the world met set of transformations and economical changes, having as consequences an alteration in the standards of generation of the wealth. In this context, the logistic appears as integrant part of this process of reorganization in the globalized economy where we live currently, and the internationalization appears as a way each more important and the time for the companies and military Institution that honours thus the international agreements assumed by the Government. The process applied in this work was schematized by Marie-Fabienne Fortin and Bogdam e Biklen being that, the instruments of retraction of data had been essentially documentary, bibliographical analysis, inquiries for interview, and direct comment. The investigation was schematized in seven chapters. The first one was seats in a brief theoretical framing, to acquire the bases of common knowledge on the subject of the study. The next chapter show, where the methods and procedures was applied throughout the inquiry. The chapters, three to five, are dedicated to the study of the thematic one in analysis, nominated: Logistics Support for National Forces System, Decentralization of the budgetary endowments for covering of the incumbencies of the Nationals Deployed Forces, and acquisition of goods and services, commanded sequentially. The presentation, analysis and quarrel of the results are displayed in chapter six. Finally, the conclusions and recommendations are presented. In the end we could concluded that although the current delicate economical and financial conjuncture, the system of logistic support and administrative-financier well is implemented and has been capable to answer to the necessities of the Nationals Deployed Forces in most distinct Theatre of Operation (OT).

Abstract:
Abstract The present research study on “Campaign Logistics, support to the National Detached Forces” has the objective of reaching some conclusions in terms of finding out which is the best type of logistic support for a mission to be more efficient. The study follows two main perspectives: a) the logistic support will be carried out from National Territory; b) the detached force asks for the support of the Host Nation (Host Nation Support). National Detached Forces (NDF) have become an important part of reality. Therefore the theme of this research study is of major importance, once NDF are constantly in need of more sophisticated and efficient logistic support. On the other hand, the Portuguese Army still has great difficulties in providing the logistic support to its own Detached Forces in the theatre of operations. The present work is divided into two chapters: the first one referring to the bibliography used and researched; the most significant concepts related to the NATO and UN logistic support systems and also to the procedures followed by the Portuguese Army when supporting its National Detached Forces. This chapter also refers to operational responsibilities in the logistic field, as well as to some logistic support systems other armies have applied, and that can be considered as references for Portugal. The second chapter is based on an analysis of the opinions collected through questionnaires and interviews to some Army officers somehow connected with this area. In terms of conclusions this study presents a proposal of what we consider as the best way to carry out logistic support to National Detached Forces, be it from National Territory or by the Host Nation.

Abstract:
Abstract The conflicts that make the headlines nowadays are characterized by an increasingly concerned role of the population in relation to stabilization and civil implementation in afflicted areas. Regarding new operations in non-article 5, especially in peace-support operations, the commander in his planning should take into account all the aspects of the civilians in the TO, giving conditions for cooperation between military and civilian authorities with the aim of establishing the necessary means for the mission fulfillment and creating conditions for achieving lasting stability in the region, contributing for the improvement of ways of living and growing acceptance of force in TO. The aim of this research work is the study of Civilian-Military Cooperation, as well their emerging concepts in peace-support operations. As such, the methodology used was based initially on a bibliographical review where we do a framework and a characterization of peace operations and where we present the CIMIC and its emerging concepts based on NATO doctrine. Secondly, we analyze the way the CIMIC is articulated within NATO, and how it works through all stages of an operation non-article 5. Then, we discuss a national case in two ways: first, we analyze the CIMIC structure embodied in General CIMIC Company monitoring the developments since its conception phase as well as the goals that are purposed to achieve. In a second part, we evaluate the work that our FND made at UNIFIL respectively in the CIMIC area, verifying the positive impact it is having on population. At the end, we get to the conclusion of the importance of CIMIC within NATO in conducting operations in non-article 5 as well as CIMIC capabilities at national level where there is a development in this area, proving the implementation of CIMIC in TO of UNIFIL, which provided a valuable contribution to Portugal.

Horne, Margaret Anne. "Investigating the risk of intracranial haemorrhage or focal neurological deficit in adults diagnosed with cerebral cavernous malformation." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/15879.

Full text
Abstract:
Background A cerebral cavernous malformation (CCM) is a small cluster of thin-walled, dilated blood vessels within the brain which is prone to bleed. Although the quantity of blood leaking tends to be small, even a small intracranial haemorrhage (ICH) can result in a clinically significant neurological deficit. Because some focal neurological deficits (FND) may in fact be haemorrhages that were undetected by imaging, FND were also included in the analysis wherever possible. In Scotland, between 2006 and 2010, the annual CCM detection rate was 0.8 per 100,000 people. Since estimates of prognosis inform decisions about whether to treat CCM, it is crucial that the untreated clinical course of the disease is fully understood. Aim The aims of this thesis are (i) to quantify the risk of ICH (or ICH or FND, referred to as ‘clinical event’) for an untreated adult within five years of CCM diagnosis, (ii) to identify prognostic factors for ICH (clinical event), and (iii) to create a model to predict, at the time of diagnosis, an individual’s risk of a subsequent ICH (clinical event). Methods Initially, a literature review was undertaken. Then data from adults diagnosed with CCM in the Scottish Intracranial Vascular Malformation Study (SIVMS) were analysed. SIVMS is a prospective, population-based cohort study: it includes all adults resident in Scotland at the time of diagnosis of a first-ever intracranial vascular malformation during the two five-year periods 1999–2003 and 2006–2010. Time-to-event methods were employed to compare the estimated risk of ICH (clinical event) for those who experienced a first ICH (clinical event) during untreated five-year follow-up with those who experienced a second ICH (clinical event). A statistical challenge when analysing clinical outcomes from patients with CCM is that the outcome event of ICH or FND is comparatively rare; therefore a larger cohort of CCM patients was required to identify more robustly potential predictors of ICH (clinical event) and to create a prognostic model to predict, at the time of diagnosis, an individual’s risk of a subsequent ICH (clinical event). Three research groups agreed to contribute their data to enable an individual patient data meta-analysis (IPDMA) to be undertaken. Results In the two SIVMS cohorts, 136 (1999–2003) and 165 adults (2006–2010) were diagnosed with CCM. In the earlier cohort, the estimated risk of a first ICH within five years of presentation (2.4%, 95% CI 0.0% to 5.7%) was significantly lower (p < 0.0001) than the risk of a recurrent ICH (31.9%, 95% CI 4.5% to 59.3%), but the annual risk of a recurrence declined over the five-year period. In the same cohort, women had an increased risk of a second clinical event (log-rank χ2(1) = 6.2, p = 0.01). The IPDMA was based on 988 adults, 62 of whom suffered a first ICH within five years of CCM diagnosis. When the data were pooled, the estimated adjusted hazard ratio for first ICH for clinical presentation (ICH/FND vs other presentation) was 4.5 (95% CI 1.5 to 13.4) and for brainstem location (brainstem vs other location) the adjusted hazard ratio was 3.3 (95% CI 1.5 to 7.2); age, sex and CCM multiplicity did not add any additional prognostic information. Conclusion In this thesis two risk factors have been identified that are independently associated with increased likelihood of experiencing an ICH (or clinical event) within five years of diagnosis. A prognostic model has been built and evaluated, based on these factors. Other areas to be explored in the future include external validation of the model and investigating the effects of (i) antithrombotic therapy and (ii) pregnancy on the progression of the disease.

Full text
Abstract:
Human face recognition is an important area in the field of biometrics. It has been an active area of research for several decades, but still remains a challenging problem because of the complexity of the human face. In this thesis we describe fully automatic solutions that can locate faces and then perform identification and verification. We present a solution for face localisation using eye locations. We derive an efficient representation for the decision hyperplane of linear and nonlinear Support Vector Machines (SVMs). For this we introduce the novel concept of $\rho$ and $\eta$ prototypes. The standard formulation for the decision hyperplane is reformulated and expressed in terms of the two prototypes. Different kernels are treated separately to achieve further classification efficiency and to facilitate its adaptation to operate with the fast Fourier transform to achieve fast eye detection. Using the eye locations, we extract and normalise the face for size and in-plane rotations. Our method produces a more efficient representation of the SVM decision hyperplane than the well-known reduced set methods. As a result, our eye detection subsystem is faster and more accurate. The use of fractals and fractal image coding for object recognition has been proposed and used by others. Fractal codes have been used as features for recognition, but we need to take into account the distance between codes, and to ensure the continuity of the parameters of the code. We use a method based on fractal image coding for recognition, which we call the Fractal Neighbour Distance (FND). The FND relies on the Euclidean metric and the uniqueness of the attractor of a fractal code. An advantage of using the FND over fractal codes as features is that we do not have to worry about the uniqueness of, and distance between, codes. We only require the uniqueness of the attractor, which is already an implied property of a properly generated fractal code. Similar methods to the FND have been proposed by others, but what distinguishes our work from the rest is that we investigate the FND in greater detail and use our findings to improve the recognition rate. Our investigations reveal that the FND has some inherent invariance to translation, scale, rotation and changes to illumination. These invariances are image dependent and are affected by fractal encoding parameters. The parameters that have the greatest effect on recognition accuracy are the contrast scaling factor, luminance shift factor and the type of range block partitioning. The contrast scaling factor affect the convergence and eventual convergence rate of a fractal decoding process. We propose a novel method of controlling the convergence rate by altering the contrast scaling factor in a controlled manner, which has not been possible before. This helped us improve the recognition rate because under certain conditions better results are achievable from using a slower rate of convergence. We also investigate the effects of varying the luminance shift factor, and examine three different types of range block partitioning schemes. They are Quad-tree, HV and uniform partitioning. We performed experiments using various face datasets, and the results show that our method indeed performs better than many accepted methods such as eigenfaces. The experiments also show that the FND based classifier increases the separation between classes. The standard FND is further improved by incorporating the use of localised weights. A local search algorithm is introduced to find a best matching local feature using this locally weighted FND. The scores from a set of these locally weighted FND operations are then combined to obtain a global score, which is used as a measure of the similarity between two face images. Each local FND operation possesses the distortion invariant properties described above. Combined with the search procedure, the method has the potential to be invariant to a larger class of non-linear distortions. We also present a set of locally weighted FNDs that concentrate around the upper part of the face encompassing the eyes and nose. This design was motivated by the fact that the region around the eyes has more information for discrimination. Better performance is achieved by using different sets of weights for identification and verification. For facial verification, performance is further improved by using normalised scores and client specific thresholding. In this case, our results are competitive with current state-of-the-art methods, and in some cases outperform all those to which they were compared. For facial identification, under some conditions the weighted FND performs better than the standard FND. However, the weighted FND still has its short comings when some datasets are used, where its performance is not much better than the standard FND. To alleviate this problem we introduce a voting scheme that operates with normalised versions of the weighted FND. Although there are no improvements at lower matching ranks using this method, there are significant improvements for larger matching ranks. Our methods offer advantages over some well-accepted approaches such as eigenfaces, neural networks and those that use statistical learning theory. Some of the advantages are: new faces can be enrolled without re-training involving the whole database; faces can be removed from the database without the need for re-training; there are inherent invariances to face distortions; it is relatively simple to implement; and it is not model-based so there are no model parameters that need to be tweaked.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the Norwegian sovereign wealth fund, the Government Pension Fund, and its linkage to the Norwegian foreign policy. The Kingdom of Norway is usually presented as a role model of a Nordic welfare state. Nevertheless, nothing of this would be possible without oil discovery on the Norwegian offshore in 1969. This thesis debates about possible oil discovery impacts on Norwegian foreign policy throughout the time and tries to analyse and elaborate on major foreign policy challenges. It tries to define whether the Norwegian foreign policy followed Norwegian investment interests and shifted policy's direction since the establishment of the Government Pension or not. Furthermore, the Government Pension Fund -- Global is not intended to be used as a foreign policy instrument. However, some information indicates the contrary. Thesis attempts to answer the question from a wider perspective.

Abstract:
Abstract Lean Direct Injection (LDI) concept proves to be an ultra-low NOx combustion scheme for future gas turbine combustors because of its ability to operate at very lean conditions. For LDI burners, the Fuel Nozzle Diameters (FND) play a vital role in deciding a balance between the various performance criteria demanded by the gas turbine industry like efficient usage of fuel, a wide range of flame stability, uniform exit temperature distribution and very low overall emissions. This paper attempts to find the optimum FND in terms of some key combustion parameters, for a novel multi-swirl LDI burner having a cross-flow mixing between fuel jets and swirling air. At first, lean blow out limits were detected from experiments with different FND using two different fuels, methane and liquefied petroleum gas, within a range of air flow rates. It was observed that with the decrease in FND the flame extinguished at a higher equivalence-ratio. Then their performances were compared through CFD simulations with two different combustion models, namely, Eddy Dissipation and PDF Flamelet. The combined results of cold and hot flow simulations showed that with the decrease in FND the fuel jet was able to penetrate deeper into the air swirl by overcoming the air momentum, which resulted in enhanced mixing leading to more efficient utilization of fuel and also uniform exit temperature distribution resulting in lower pattern factor. Thus the findings of this research work should be resourceful in the development of modern cross-flow LDI combustors.
