Nous présentons une méthode de simulation et de calcul des récupérateurs de chaleur croisé (Air-Eau) à tubes ailetés. Ce modèle de calcul est validé par une approche expérimentale, en utilisant trois faisceaux de tubes (échangeurs industriels) en arrangement aligné et quinconcé. Le logiciel prédit les flux de chaleur échangés dans une fourchette de 10%. L'échangeur croisé contre-courant est le plus performant des échangeurs croisés. La configuration croisée simple est non rentable. Dans la plupart des cas, le flux de chaleur total échangé par un échangeur croisé contre-courant est environ de 10% supérieur au flux échangé dans un échangeur croisé cocourant. Un échangeur croisé à ailettes peut échanger cinq fois plus de chaleur qu'un échangeur à tubes lisses.

On propose une étude numérique, par différences finies, du transfert de chaleur dans un mur multicouche (à deux ou trois couches) soumis à une condition de rayonnement solaire sur le côté extérieur et prenant en compte les échanges de chaleur par convection sur ses deux faces. L’exploitation du code numérique est développée sur des cas relatifs au problème posé dans l’habitat. Les résultats numériques sont présentés sur des exemples de matériaux utilisés dans le domaine du bâtiment dans des conditions réelles de fonctionnement (flux solaire, pertes convectives, etc…). On analyse également, l’influence, sur le transfert de chaleur, de quelques paramètres clés du système comme le choix des matériaux, l’optimisation de leur épaisseur et également la nature variable du flux solaire. Une proposition optimale sera dégagée de cette étude en fonction des objectifs recherchés.

Un modèle décrivant la température d'équilibre des lagunes a été développé, tenant compte des différents flux de chaleur que celles-ci échangent avec l'air et le sol environnant. Six composantes différentes ont été inclues dans le calcul de ce bilan thermique: radiation solaire, évaporation, convection, rayonnement atmosphérique, rayonnement de la surface du plan d'eau, échange via les parois en contact avec le sol. Le modèle ainsi obtenu a été testé avec efficacité sur deux lagunes aérées et une lagune naturelle situées sous climat tempéré ; sa précision sur l'estimation des températures d'équilibre étant de l'ordre de 0.7 °C. Des simulations en continu ont également pu être effectuées au moyen d'une variante dynamique, tenant compte de l'inertie thermique qu'entraîne le volume des bassins. Quelle que soit la saison envisagée, la principale forme d'apport de chaleur est représentée par la radiation solaire tandis que la dissipation d'énergie se partage entre les flux d'évaporation et la balance des deux flux de rayonnement. Les bassins échangeraient en moyenne plus de 250 W/m2 ; le maximum de transfert de chaleur correspondant au printemps et à la période estivale. Enfin, l'analyse de sensibilité du modèle nous a permis de mettre en évidence la contribution de chacun des termes intervenant dans le calcul de ce bilan thermique et de révéler sa dépendance vis-à-vis principalement de la température d'entrée, du rayonnement solaire et de la température de l'air.

Dans le but d’évaluer les performances du modèle de surface SISVAT (Soil Ice Snow Vegetation Atmosphere Transfer), une simulation unidimensionnelle des flux de chaleur latente et sensible sur quatre ans (2006 à 2009) est effectuée. Les résultats de la simulation sont comparés aux observations de deux stations de mesures en Afrique de l’Ouest (Nalohou au Bénin et Wankama au Niger). Ces deux sites ont été sélectionnés pour leur emplacement géographique, la différence entre leur climat respectif et la disponibilité d’une longue série de données météorologiques, permettant une analyse approfondie des sorties du modèle sur une période étendue. Afin de comprendre la sensibilité du modèle à la fraction verte de la végétation, on évalue à partir des valeurs des coefficients d’efficacité de Nash les flux turbulents de chaleur sensible et latente simulés pour une fraction verte fixe avec ceux simulés pour une fraction verte variable. L’analyse des coefficients de Nash montre dans l’ensemble une amélioration des résultats avec une fraction verte variable par rapport à ceux obtenus avec une fraction verte indépendante du temps, sauf pendant la fin de la saison sèche pour la station de Nalohou et après la saison humide pour Wankama. Malgré une paramétrisation simple de la variation de la fraction verte de la végétation, les résultats du modèle sont améliorés à cette échelle d’étude tropicale. Les biais des flux de chaleur sensible et latente sont réduits sur la période du début de saison humide jusqu’à la fin d’année (2008 & 2009). La réduction de biais est accompagnée par une amélioration des coefficients d’efficacité de Nash, indiquant une meilleure représentation des observations par le modèle sur cette période. Cette étude met en évidence l’importance de prendre en compte la phénologie végétale dans la modélisation numérique du climat de l’Afrique de l’Ouest.

Ce travail présente une étude numérique du stockage de l'énergie thermique par chaleur latente à basses températures (0 °C à 100 °C) dans un lit cylindrique rempli de sphères uniformes, disposées au hasard et contenant chacune un matériau à changement de phase (MCP), traversé par un flux d’air. Un modèle numérique mono dimensionnel à deux phases séparées est appliqué. Il a permis de prédire la distribution axiale de la température du fluide et du matériau fusible le long du lit ainsi que les performances de ce lit fixe dans les deux modes de stockage et de récupération de la chaleur pour une température du fluide à l’entrée constante et un nombre de Reynolds variable. Le modèle développé s’applique à la fois pour un processus de changement de phase isotherme et non isotherme. L’évolution de la température à l’intérieur du lit a permis de déterminer les domaines de stockage les plus efficaces et de définir par conséquent les dimensions optimales de l’unité de stockage.

Dans ce travail, nous présentons une étude numérique de la convection mixte d’un écoulement d’eau en régime laminaire, développée dans un cylindre chauffé par un flux de chaleur constant et uniforme. Une brève revue des travaux récents sur les écoulements et le transfert de chaleur en convection mixte est exposée. Une description du problème est présentée à travers les équations de conservation (masse, quantité de mouvement et énergie). Les caractéristiques dynamiques et thermiques des grandeurs physiques de cet écoulement sont déterminées numériquement en utilisant le code CFD ANSYS 17.0. Dans le cas stationnaire, les simulations ont été effectuées par la méthode des volumes finis en utilisant l’approximation de Boussinesq. Les résultats obtenus ont confirmé que les forces de gravité génèrent deux rouleaux thermo-convectifs le long de la conduite. Ainsi, l’augmentation du nombre de Grashof indique une augmentation des champs dynamique et thermique. Par contre, l’augmentation du nombre de Reynolds induit une diminution de la température.

Cette étude numérique concerne la théorie du transport de chaleur laminaire non - stationnaire dans une conduite cylindrique soumise à des conditions thermiques d’entrée périodiques. Le régime transitoire est provoqué par une condition de flux ou par une condition de température d’entrée de type harmonique. Le profil de vitesse est supposé parabolique et indépendant du temps. Les propriétés thermodynamiques du fluide et de la paroi sont constantes, la résistance thermique de la paroi est négligeable et le couplage paroi - fluide est réalisé à l’aide d’un bilan d’énergie incluant le taux d’énergie transférée par conduction par le fluide et le terme d’énergie interne de la paroi. On étudie les différents termes du bilan énergétique du système dans le cas d’une perturbation de type échelon de flux. Nous avons constaté que le régime transitoire est en partie conditionné par le terme d’énergie interne du fluide. Dans le cas d’une condition de flux de type harmonique, nous avons étudié la fonction de transfert du fluide en fonction du nombre de Reynolds. Pour une température d’entrée périodique, nous avons étudié l’influence du paramètre b* (taux de l’énergie stockée dans la paroi au flux transféré par conduction à travers la veine fluide de la paroi au fluide et inversement) et des pertes convectives sur l’évolution spatio-temporelle de la température de la paroi, de la température moyenne du fluide et du nombre de Nusselt local. L’étude numérique présentée nous a permis de conclure que pour les valeurs élevées de b* et de Nue (nombre de Nusselt extérieur), le nombre de Nusselt local obtenu est en bon accord avec le nombre de Nusselt local et stationnaire correspondant à une paroi à température constante et uniforme. Un tel modèle est valable dans une large gamme des valeurs de b* et Nue.

L'océan est le plus grand réservoir d'énergie de notre planète. La quantité de chaleur qu'il est capable de stocker est modulée par sa circulation complexe, opérant sur des échelles allant du centimètre à la dizaine de milliers de kilomètres. Les découvertes scientifiques des deux dernières décennies ont révélé l'existence de fronts de fine échelle (d'environ 1 à 50 km), analogues aux fronts atmosphériques, dans la couche de mélange océanique de surface. Ces fronts agissent comme des conduits entre l'océan et l'atmosphère, contrôlant les échanges de gaz et de chaleur. Combinant observation et modélisation, nous démontrons pour la première fois le rôle capital de ces fronts jusqu'à 1000 m de profondeur. Ils génèrent d'importants flux de chaleur dirigés de l'intérieur de l'océan vers la surface, pouvant modifier la capacité de stockage de chaleur de l'océan, avec des répercussions potentiellement majeures pour les systèmes biogéochimique et climatique. The ocean is the largest solar energy collector on Earth. The amount of heat it can store is modulated by its complex circulation, which spans a broad range of spatial scales, from centimeters to thousands of kilometers. Scientific discoveries of the past two decades revealed the existence of fine-scale fronts (≈ 10-20 km wide), analogous to atmospheric fronts, in the oceanic surface mixed layer. These fronts control the exchanges between the ocean and the atmosphere just as the capillary vessels of our pulmonary alveoli facilitate the exchange of gas when breathing. Combining observation and modeling, we demonstrate for the first time the crucial role played by these fronts in the ocean interior. These fine-scale fronts drive an anomalous upward heat transport from the ocean interior back to the surface. This can alter the ocean heat storage capacity, with potential major implications for the biogeochemical and climate systems.

RÉSUMÉ Les auteurs présentent une étude sur la simulation de la période de fonte de la neige au bassin des Eaux Volées (forêt Montmorency) par le modèle SSARR. Si la reconstitution des débits moyens de la fonte printanière est acceptable, la sous-estimation des débits journaliers de pointe et la fonte rapide des années 1972, 1974, 1976, 1978 et 1980 ont poussé les auteurs à faire l'analyse des composantes hydro-climatiques reliées à ces événements. Cet examen a clairement établi que: 1) dans des conditions de temps relativement dégagé, la méthode de degré-jour utilisée évalue d'une façon acceptable l'écoulement ainsi que les débits de pointe journaliers; 2) Dans des conditions de type de temps cyclonique du sud, les effets combinés de la température et des précipitations accompagnés de flux de chaleur advective transportée par la masse d'air humide expliquent les coefficients de ruissellement élevés, la sous-estimation des débits de pointe et l'apparition des débits extrêmes. L'importance du flux thermique advective a été souligné et discuté.

On établit: - que l'ensemble des émergences se situe au niveau du rivage, et non en profondeur - que grâce à des mesures approchées des phénomènes de mélange des eaux, on peut estimer le débit moyen des résurgences en mer à 0,4 m3s-1 par kilomètre de côte sur la façade sud de l'île. Ce chiffre est cohérent avec des estimations indirectes obtenues à partir du bilan hydrique.

Chez le poulet de chair, l’exposition chronique à la chaleur réduit significativement le métabolisme basal, mais accroît l’extrachaleur rapportée à l’énergie métabolisable ingérée. La proportion d’énergie retenue sous forme de lipides est plus élevée et celle retenue sous forme de protéines moindre à 32°C comparés à 22°C. Ceci pourrait provenir de modifications de l’utilisation du glucose, en relation avec une altération de la sécrétion d’insuline et de la sensibilité des tissus à cette hormone.
La chaleur accroît l’engraissement, particulièrement au niveau sous-cutané. La proportion d’acides gras saturés dans les tissus adipeux est alors plus élevée. Le fort engraissement au chaud ne paraît pas s’expliquer par une lipogenèse hépatique accrue. Les flux de sécrétion de lipoprotéines de type VLDL ou de triglycérides totaux, qui représentent les capacités d’exportation des lipides du foie vers les autres tissus, ne sont pas non plus augmentés. Enfin, la captation périphérique des triglycérides circulants par la lipoprotéine lipase dans les tissus adipeux apparaît même réduite. En revanche, l’utilisation des acides gras déposés serait plus faible.
La réduction du dépôt protéique au chaud provient essentiellement d’une baisse de la synthèse des protéines musculaires. Il est possible que la chaleur modifie les besoins en acides aminés, certains d’entre eux deviendraient alors limitants pour la synthèse protéique. La protéosynthèse pourrait aussi être limitée par un apport énergétique insuffisant au muscle ou en raison de modifications du contexte hormonal.En ambiance chaude, si une supplémentation lipidique n’a que peu d’effet, augmenter le taux protéique de l’aliment améliore les performances et la rétention protéique des animaux. Cet effet, bien que bénéfique, reste pourtant relativement modéré.

Abstract. Mitigating the global climate crisis and its consequences, such as more frequent and severe droughts, is one of the major challenges for future agriculture. Therefore, identifying land use systems and management practices that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and promote water use efficiency (WUE) is crucial. This, however, requires accurate and precise measurements of carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes and evapotranspiration (ET). Despite that, commercial systems to measure CO2 and ET fluxes are expensive and thus often exclude research in ecosystems within the Global South. This is especially true for research and data of agroecosystems in these areas, which are to date still widely underrepresented. Here, we present a newly developed low-cost, non-dispersive infrared (NDIR)-based CO2 and ET flux measurement device (∼ EUR 200) that provides reliable, accurate and precise CO2 and ET flux measurements in conjunction with manually operated closed chambers. To validate the system, laboratory and field validation experiments were performed, testing multiple different low-cost sensors. We demonstrate that the system delivers accurate and precise CO2 and ET flux measurements using the K30 FR NDIR (CO2) and SHT31 (RH, relative humidity) sensor. An additional field trial application demonstrated its longer-term stability (> 3 months) and ability to obtain valid net ecosystem C balances (NECBs) and WUE. This was the case, even though environmental conditions at the field trial application site in sub-Saharan Africa were rather challenging (e.g., extremely high temperatures, humidity and rainfall). Abstract. The amplitude, phase, and form of the seasonal cycle of atmospheric CO2 concentrations varies on many time and space scales (Peters et al., 2007). Intra-annual CO2 variation is primarily driven by seasonal uptake and release of CO2 by the terrestrial biosphere (Machta et al., 1977; Buchwitz et al., 2007), with a small (Cadule et al., 2010; Heimann et al., 1998), but potentially changing (Gorgues et al., 2010) contribution from the ocean. Variability in the magnitude, spatial distribution, and seasonal drivers of terrestrial net primary productivity (NPP) will be induced by, amongst other factors, anthropogenic CO2 release (Keeling et al., 1996), land-use change (Zimov et al., 1999) and planetary orbital variability, and will lead to changes in CO2atm seasonality. Despite CO2atm seasonality being a dynamic and prominent feature of the Earth System, its potential to drive changes in the air-sea flux of CO2 has not previously (to the best of my knowledge) been explored. It is important that we investigate the impact of CO2atm seasonality change, and the potential for carbon-cycle feedbacks to operate through the modification of the CO2atm seasonal cycle, because the decision had been made to prescribe CO2atm concentrations (rather than emissions) within model simulations for the fifth IPCC climate assessment (Taylor et al., 2009). In this study I undertake ocean-model simulations within which different magnitude CO2atm seasonal cycles are prescribed. These simulations allow me to examine the effect of a change in CO2atm seasonal cycle magnitude on the air-sea CO2 flux. I then use an off-line model to isolate the drivers of the identified air-sea CO2 flux change, and propose mechanisms by which this change may come about. Three mechanisms are identified by which co-variability of the seasonal cycles in atmospheric CO2 concentration, and seasonality in sea-ice extent, wind-speed and ocean temperature, could potentially lead to changes in the air-sea flux of CO2 at mid-to-high latitudes. The sea-ice driven mechanism responds to an increase in CO2atm seasonality by pumping CO2 into the ocean, the wind-speed and solubility-driven mechanisms, by releasing CO2 from the ocean (in a relative sense). The relative importance of the mechanisms will be determined by, amongst other variables, the seasonal extent of sea-ice. To capture the described feedbacks within earth system models, CO2atm concentrations must be allowed to evolve freely, forced only by anthropogenic emissions rather than prescribed CO2atm concentrations; however, time-integrated ocean simulations imply that the cumulative net air-sea flux could be at most equivalent to a few ppm CO2atm. The findings presented here suggest that, at least under pre-industrial conditions, the prescription of CO2atm concentrations rather than emissions within simulations will have little impact on the marine anthropogenic CO2 sink.

Abstract. The late Taro Takahashi (Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO), Columbia University) and colleagues provided the first near-global monthly air–sea CO2 flux climatology in Takahashi et al. (1997), based on available surface water partial pressure of CO2 measurements. This product has been a benchmark for uptake of CO2 in the ocean. Several versions have been provided since, with improvements in procedures and large increases in observations, culminating in the authoritative assessment in Takahashi et al. (2009a, b). Here we provide and document the last iteration using a greatly increased dataset (SOCATv2022) and determining fluxes using air–sea partial pressure differences as a climatological reference for the period 1980–2021 (Fay et al., 2023, https://doi.org/10.25921/295g-sn13). The resulting net flux for the open ocean region is estimated as -1.79±0.7 Pg C yr−1, which compares well with other global mean flux estimates. While global flux results are consistent, differences in regional means and seasonal amplitudes are discussed. Consistent with other studies, we find the largest differences in the data-sparse southeast Pacific and Southern Ocean.

L’analyse comparative des données météorologiques de la station rurale de Carpiquet avec une station expérimentale en périphérie de la ville de Caen a permis de montrer la présence en hiver d’un léger îlot de chaleur péri-urbain (ICPU) (moyenne de +0,4°C). Il est caractérisé par un maximum d’intensité en fin d’après-midi et début de soirée (+0,8°C) et des écarts faibles le reste du temps. Derrière cette image moyenne, une analyse du continuum temporel au pas de temps journalier puis horaire a mis en exergue des comportements différenciés selon les types de temps. Le caractère le plus original des résultats est la présence certes rare, mais significative en termes d’intensité, d’un îlot de fraîcheur péri-urbain (IFPU). Il se forme de nuit par temps clair et calme et se prolonge dans la matinée, jusqu’à présenter un maximum d’intensité vers 9 h UTC. Cette inversion par rapport au schéma classique de fonctionnement des îlots de chaleur urbain (ICU) s’explique par un mode d’occupation du sol favorable à la formation d’une poche froide par rayonnement nocturne, favorisée par l’absence totale de vent (effet de barrage du bâti et de la végétation) et par la faible densité urbaine, alors que sur la campagne ces mécanismes de refroidissement sont atténués par la persistance d’un léger flux. Cet IFPU résiste et s’intensifie en début de matinée, jusqu’à temps que le soleil et la turbulence de l’air ne viennent échauffer et disperser cette pellicule d’air froid plus dense. Ici, les conditions stationnelles semblent donc primer sur les effets purement urbains car l’agglomération de Caen ne présente pas une masse suffisante pour créer une « bulle chaude » jusque dans ses quartiers périphériques quand un type de temps radiatif s’impose.

Here we present a global and regionally resolved terrestrial net biosphere exchange (NBE) dataset with corresponding uncertainties between 2010–2018: Carbon Monitoring System Flux Net Biosphere Exchange 2020 (CMS-Flux NBE 2020). It is estimated using the NASA Carbon Monitoring System Flux (CMS-Flux) top-down flux inversion system that assimilates column CO2 observations from the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) and NASA's Observing Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO-2). The regional monthly fluxes are readily accessible as tabular files, and the gridded fluxes are available in NetCDF format. The fluxes and their uncertainties are evaluated by extensively comparing the posterior CO2 mole fractions with CO2 observations from aircraft and the NOAA marine boundary layer reference sites. We describe the characteristics of the dataset as the global total, regional climatological mean, and regional annual fluxes and seasonal cycles. We find that the global total fluxes of the dataset agree with atmospheric CO2 growth observed by the surface-observation network within uncertainty. Averaged between 2010 and 2018, the tropical regions range from close to neutral in tropical South America to a net source in Africa; these contrast with the extra-tropics, which are a net sink of 2.5±0.3 Gt C/year. The regional satellite-constrained NBE estimates provide a unique perspective for understanding the terrestrial biosphere carbon dynamics and monitoring changes in regional contributions to the changes of atmospheric CO2 growth rate. Abstract. We present an exploratory study examining the use of airborne remote-sensing observations to detect ecological responses to elevated CO2 emissions from active volcanic systems. To evaluate these ecosystem responses, existing spectroscopic, thermal, and lidar data acquired over forest ecosystems on Mammoth Mountain volcano, California, were exploited, along with in situ measurements of persistent volcanic soil CO2 fluxes. The elevated CO2 response was used to statistically model ecosystem structure, composition, and function, evaluated via data products including biomass, plant foliar traits and vegetation indices, and evapotranspiration (ET). Using regression ensemble models, we found that soil CO2 flux was a significant predictor for ecological variables, including canopy greenness (normalized vegetation difference index, NDVI), canopy nitrogen, ET, and biomass. With increasing CO2, we found a decrease in ET and an increase in canopy nitrogen, both consistent with theory, suggesting more water- and nutrient-use-efficient canopies. However, we also observed a decrease in NDVI with increasing CO2 (a mean NDVI of 0.27 at 200 g m−2 d−1 CO2 reduced to a mean NDVI of 0.10 at 800 g m−2 d−1 CO2). This is inconsistent with theory though consistent with increased efficiency of fewer leaves. We found a decrease in above-ground biomass with increasing CO2, also inconsistent with theory, but we did also find a decrease in biomass variance, pointing to a long-term homogenization of structure with elevated CO2. Additionally, the relationships between ecological variables changed with elevated CO2, suggesting a shift in coupling/decoupling among ecosystem structure, composition, and function synergies. For example, ET and biomass were significantly correlated for areas without elevated CO2 flux but decoupled with elevated CO2 flux. This study demonstrates that (a) volcanic systems show great potential as a means to study the properties of ecosystems and their responses to elevated CO2 emissions and (b) these ecosystem responses are measurable using a suite of airborne remotely sensed data.

Pour des périodes de temps choisies, les températures du sol sont faiblement corrélées avec le rayonnement solaire (K ↓ ), le flux de chaleur dans le sol (QG) et la température de l'air (TAIR). Lorsque les cumuls de ces variables (∑K ↓, ∑QG et ∑TAIR) ainsi que l'épaisseur de la neige (EPAIS) sont utilisés, les corrélations sont plus fortes. En ce qui a trait à la profondeur du gel, la corrélation est la plus forte avec EPAIS, ∑QG, ∑TAIR et ∑K ↓, en ordre d'importance. D'ailleurs ces variables expliquent plus de 99% de la variance de la profondeur du gel dans le sol.

Another bias related to water vapour fluctuations has recently been observed with open-path sensors, attributed to sea salt build-up and water films on sensor optics. Two very different approaches have been used to deal with these water vapour-related biases. Miller et al. (2010) employed a membrane drier to physically eliminate 97% of the water vapour fluctuations in the sample air before it entered a closed-path gas analyser. Prytherch et al. (2010a) employed the empirical (Peter K. Taylor, PKT) post-processing correction to correct open-path sensor data. In this paper, we test these methods side by side using data from the Surface Ocean Aerosol Production (SOAP) experiment in the Southern Ocean. The air–sea CO2 flux was directly measured with four closed-path analysers, two of which were positioned down-stream of a membrane dryer. The CO2 fluxes from the two dried gas analysers matched each other and were in general agreement with common parameterisations. The flux estimates from the un-dried sensors agreed with the dried sensors only during periods with low latent heat flux (&leq;7 W m−2). When latent heat flux was higher, CO2 flux estimates from the un-dried sensors exhibited large scatter and an order-of-magnitude bias. Applying the PKT correction to the flux data from the un-dried analysers did not remove the bias when compared to the data from the dried gas analyser. The results of this study demonstrate the validity of measuring CO2 fluxes using a pre-dried air stream and show that the PKT correction is not valid for the correction of CO2 fluxes.

La nécessité de réduire les émissions de dioxyde de carbone (CO2) a conduit à revaloriser les moteurs à combustion externe fonctionnant selon le cycle de Stirling. Les moteurs Stirling connaissent depuis peu une vogue nouvelle, car ils sont silencieux, non polluants, acceptent tout type de chaleur externe et demandent peu de maintenance. Ce moteur a été utilisé avec succès pour la conversion de l’énergie solaire en électricité par la technologie dite ‘Dish Stirling System’ qui utilise un moteur Stirling placé au foyer d’un concentrateur parabolique. Dans cette étude, une modélisation dynamique d’un moteur Stirling de type gamma basée une approche quasi stationnaire a été présentée. Ce modèle, qui prend en compte les différentes pertes thermiques et mécaniques dont le moteur Stirling est le siège, a conduit à l’écriture d’important système d’équation algébro différentielles. Le programme de calcul développé sous Matlab a permis, dans le but d’améliorer les performances du moteur Stirling, d’optimiser les paramètres géométriques et physiques, tels que la géométrie des échangeurs, la température du réchauffeur et du refroidisseur, les volumes morts et la vitesse de rotation.

Elle est destinée principalement à la production d’électricité; - la géothermie basse énergie, qui concerne les gisements des zones des plates formes continentales stables, recouvertes de terrains sédimentaires caractérisées par une température comprise entre 30 °C et 150 °C. Elle est destinée principalement au chauffage urbain et au chauffage de serres. Le Sud algérien est un vaste territoire dont le potentiel géothermique est contenu dans les bassins sédimentaires des zones continentales stables. Les ressources géothermiques sont principalement de basse énergie. Afin de déterminer les régions d’intérêt géothermique, les cartes de gradient géothermique de flux de chaleur sont établies. Deux zones géothermiques distinctes sont bien mises en évidence à travers ces cartes, l’une dans la partie Est et l’autre dans la partie Ouest du Sahara algérien.

Abstract. Estimates of the anthropogenic global-integrated sea-air carbon dioxide (CO2) flux from 1990 to 2009, based on different models and measurements, range from –1.4 to –2.6 Pg C yr–1. The median values of anthropogenic CO2 for each method show better agreement and are: −1.9 for Pg C yr−1 for numerical ocean general circulation hind cast models (OGCMs) with parameterized biogeochemistry; –2.1 Pg C yr–1 for atmospheric inverse models; –1.9 Pg C yr–1 for global atmospheric constraints based on O2 / N2 ratios for 1990–2000; and –2.4 Pg C yr–1 for oceanic inverse models. An updated estimate of this anthropogenic CO2 flux based on a climatology of sea-air partial pressure of CO2 differences (ΔpCO2) (Takahashi et al., 2009) and a bulk formulation of gas transfer with wind speed for year 2000 is –2.0 Pg C yr–1. Using this ΔpCO2 climatology and empirical relationships of pCO2 with sea-surface temperature (SST) anomalies (Park et al., 2010a), the interannual variability of the contemporary CO2 flux is estimated to be 0.20 Pg C yr–1 (1σ) from 1990 through 2009. This is similar to the variability estimated by the OGCMs of 0.16 Pg C yr–1 but smaller than the interannual variability from atmospheric inverse estimates of 0.40 Pg C yr–1. The variability is largely driven by large-scale climate re-organizations. The decadal trends for different methods range from –0.13 (Pg C yr–1) decade–1 to –0.50 (Pg C yr−1) decade−1. The OGCMs and the data based sea-air CO2 flux estimates show smaller uptakes and appreciably smaller decadal trends than estimates based on changes in carbon inventory suggesting that methods capable of resolving shorter timescales are showing a slowing of the rate of ocean CO2 uptake. It is not clear if this large difference in trend is a methodological issue or a real natural feedback.

So far, country-level estimates are mainly available through official country reports, such as the greenhouse gas inventories reported to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Recently, different modelling approaches, namely dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs) and bookkeeping models, have moved to higher spatial resolutions, which makes it possible to obtain model-based country-level estimates that are globally consistent in their methodology. To progress towards a largely independent assessment of country reports using models, we analyse the robustness of country-level CO2 flux estimates from different modelling approaches in the period 1950–2021 and compare them with estimates from country reports. Our results highlight the general ability of modelling approaches to estimate land-use CO2 fluxes at the country level and at higher spatial resolution. Modelled land-use CO2 flux estimates generally agree well, but the investigation of multiple DGVMs and bookkeeping models reveals that the robustness of their estimates strongly varies across countries, and substantial uncertainties remain, even for top emitters. Similarly, modelled land-use CO2 flux estimates and country-report-based estimates agree reasonably well in many countries once their differing definitions are accounted for, although differences remain in some other countries. A separate analysis of CO2 emissions and removals from land use using bookkeeping models also shows that historical peaks in net fluxes stem from emission peaks in most countries, whereas the long-term trends are more connected to removal dynamics. The ratio of the net flux to the sum of CO2 emissions and removals from land use (the net-to-gross flux ratio) underlines the spatio-temporal heterogeneity in the drivers of net land-use CO2 flux trends. In many tropical regions, net-to-gross flux ratios of about 50 % are due to much larger emissions than removals; in many temperate countries, ratios close to zero show that emissions and removals largely offset each other. Considering only the net flux thus potentially masks large emissions and removals and the different timescales upon which they act, particularly if averaged over countries or larger regions, highlighting the need for future studies to focus more on the gross fluxes. Abstract Evapotranspiration (ET) is controlled by atmospheric demand, plant and soil hydraulic constraints, and the plant physiological activities that determine canopy resistance. This paper introduces a new ET scheme developed for the Ecological Assimilation of Land and Climate Observations (EALCO) model that integrates these controls into one dynamic system. This scheme is based on solving the governing equation system that represents the coupled canopy energy–water–CO2 transfer dynamics, where the canopy temperature Tc, plant water potential ψc, and leaf intercellular CO2 concentrations Ci are simultaneously obtained and used in ET calculations. Modeled ET was compared with eddy correlation flux measurement at a boreal aspen forest. Results showed that the correlation coefficient (R) between modeled and measured daily ET was greater than 0.96. The average absolute error was approximately 0.3 mm day−1. Modeled ET was generally higher than measured ET by 10%. This is consistent with the energy balance closure analyses from observations that showed that turbulent energy flux was frequently less than 90% of the total available energy. The effects of the plant CO2 and water transfer dynamics on ET simulations were investigated by running the model in two additional settings. These were 1) static Ci—where the ratio of Ci to atmospheric CO2 concentration was set to a constant value, and 2) static ψc—where the ψc was linearly related to soil water potential. The dynamic CO2 transfer scheme and the static Ci scheme produced relatively small differences in ET that mainly occurred at a subdaily time scale. Differences in ET produced using the dynamic water transfer scheme and the static ψc scheme depended on ecosystem water conditions and were more significant when the plant was under water stress. Ignoring the dynamic water transfer process in the model decreased the correlation coefficient between modeled and measured ET more significantly in drier years. This implies that the dynamic water transfer scheme is of more importance for ET estimates in arid or semiarid ecosystems.

Abstract. A benchmark dataset of radiation, heat, and CO2 fluxes is crucial to land–atmosphere interaction research. Due to rapid urbanization and the development of agriculture, the land–atmosphere interaction processes over the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) of China, which is a typical East Asian monsoon region, are becoming various and complex. To understand the effects of various land cover changes on land–atmosphere interactions in this region, a comprehensive long-term (2011–2019) in situ observation campaign, including 30 min resolution meteorological variables (air temperature, humidity, pressure, wind speed, and wind direction), surface radiative flux, turbulent heat flux, and CO2 flux, was conducted at four sites with two typical surface types (i.e., croplands and suburbs) in the YRD. Analysis of the dataset showed that all four radiation components, latent heat flux, sensible heat flux, soil heat flux, and CO2 flux varied seasonally and diurnally at the four sites. Surface energy fluxes exhibited great differences among the four sites. On an annual basis, for the two cropland sites, the dominant consumer of net radiation was latent heat flux. For the two suburban sites, in contrast, latent heating dominated from April to November, whereas sensible heating dominated during the other months. Our present work provides convincing evidence that the dataset has potential for multiple research fields, including studying land–atmosphere interactions, improving boundary layer parameterization schemes, evaluating remote sensing algorithms, validating carbon flux modeling and inversion, and developing climate models for typical East Asian monsoon regions. Surface-ocean CO2 partial pressure data have been assimilated into a simple diagnostic model of surface-ocean biogeochemistry to estimate the spatio-temporal CO2 partial pressure field and ultimately the sea-air CO2 fluxes. Results compare well with the widely used monthly climatology by Takahashi et al. (2009) but also contain some short-term and interannual variations. Fitting the same model to atmospheric CO2 data yields less robust but consistent estimates, confirming that using the partial pressure based estimates as ocean prior in atmospheric CO2 inversions may improve land CO2 flux estimates. Estimated seasonality of ocean-internal carbon sources and sinks is discussed in the light of observed nutrient variations.

La méthodologie est basée sur des outils expérimentaux (des tests paramétriques et des essais de simulation du scénario) et des modèles de comportement. Le cas d'un bassin de stockage d'eau construit avec un matériau contenant des résidus d'épuration des fumées d'incinération d'ordures ménagères est présenté. L'influence de la carbonatation du lixiviat par le CO2 atmosphérique sur le relargage des éléments de constitution du matériau est étudiée. Un modèle de comportement est mis en place pour le cas étudié; il comporte trois niveaux : 1) le matériau (chimie et diffusion), 2) le lixiviat (chimie et convection), 3) l'absorption du CO2 dans le lixiviat. Plusieurs échelles d'expérimentation (tests de laboratoire, pilote de laboratoire, pilote de terrain) ont été mises en place pour l'étude du scénario et pour la validation du modèle de comportement. Le rôle de la modélisation est mis en avant par les résultats prévisionnels des simulations. Ainsi, pour le cas étudié, la carbonatation du système diminue la concentration du plomb dans l'eau du bassin par rapport à un scénario "bassin couvert". La carbonatation ne modifie pas le relargage des éléments solubles (Na, K, Cl) et détermine la spéciation du Ca dans le bassin et à la surface du matériau.

Abstract. Investigating greenhouse gases (GHGs) and water flux dynamics within the soil–plant–atmosphere interphase is key for understanding ecosystem functioning, as they reflect the ecosystem's responses to environmental changes. Understanding these responses is essential for developing sustainable agricultural systems that can help to adapt to global challenges such as increased drought. Typically, an initial understanding of GHGs and water flux dynamics is gained through laboratory or greenhouse pot experiments, where gas exchange is often measured using commercially available manual closed-chamber (leaf) systems. However, these systems are rather expensive and often labor-intensive, thus limiting the number of different treatments and their repetitions that can be studied. Here, we present a fully automatic, low-cost (EUR <1000 per unit) multi-chamber system based on Arduino, termed “greenhouse coffins”. It is designed to continuously measure canopy CO2 and evapotranspiration (ET) fluxes. It can operate in two modes: an independent and a dependent measurement mode. The independent measurement mode utilizes low-cost NDIR (non-dispersive infrared) CO2 (K30 FR) and relative humidity (SHT31) sensors, thus making each greenhouse coffin a fully independent measurement device. The dependent measurement mode connects multiple greenhouse coffins via a low-cost multiplexer (EUR <250) to a single infrared gas analyzer (LI-850, LI-COR Inc., Lincoln, USA), allowing for measurements in series, achieving cost efficiency while also gaining more flexibility in terms of target GHG fluxes (potential extension to N2O, CH4 and stable isotopes). In both modes, CO2 and ET fluxes are determined through the respective concentration increase during closure time. We tested both modes and demonstrated that the presented system is able to deliver precise and accurate CO2 and ET flux measurements using low-cost sensors, with an emphasis on calibrating the sensors to improve measurement precision. By connecting multiple greenhouse coffins via our low-cost multiplexer to a single infrared gas analyzer in the dependent mode, we could additionally show that the system can efficiently measure CO2 and ET fluxes in a high temporal resolution across various treatments with both labor and cost efficiency. Therefore, the developed system is expected to be a valuable tool for conducting greenhouse experiments, enabling comprehensive testing of plant–soil dynamic responses to various treatments and conditions.

The effect of diurnal variations in sea surface temperature (SST) on the air-sea flux of CO2 over the central Atlantic ocean and Mediterranean Sea (60 S–60 N, 60 W–45 E) is evaluated for 2005–2006. We use high spatial resolution hourly satellite ocean skin temperature data to determine the diurnal warming (ΔSST). The CO2 flux is then computed using three different temperature fields – a foundation temperature (Tf, measured at a depth where there is no diurnal variation), Tf, plus the hourly ΔSST and Tf, plus the monthly average of the ΔSSTs. This is done in conjunction with a physically-based parameterisation for the gas transfer velocity (NOAA-COARE). The differences between the fluxes evaluated for these three different temperature fields quantify the effects of both diurnal warming and diurnal covariations. We find that including diurnal warming increases the CO2 flux out of this region of the Atlantic for 2005–2006 from 9.6 Tg C a−1 to 30.4 Tg C a−1 (hourly ΔSST) and 31.2 Tg C a−1 (monthly average of ΔSST measurements). Diurnal warming in this region, therefore, has a large impact on the annual net CO2 flux but diurnal covariations are negligible. However, in this region of the Atlantic the uptake and outgassing of CO2 is approximately balanced over the annual cycle, so although we find diurnal warming has a very large effect here, the Atlantic as a whole is a very strong carbon sink (e.g. −920 Tg C a−1 Takahashi et al., 2002) making this is a small contribution to the Atlantic carbon budget.

Nos études sur les températures souterraines au lac Jourdan, près de la côte du sud-ouest de la baie d’Ungava, révèlent l’existence d’un pergélisol continu dans cette zone de toundra forestière située entre 85 et 300 m d’altitude. Il atteint une profondeur maximale d’environ 200 m sur le plateau, à la limite septentrionale de la forêt. Le pergélisol n’est pas relique, mais en équilibre avec le climat actuel. Les fluctuations observées dans les profils thermiques peuvent être dues aux changements séculaires du climat ou aux flux de chaleur latéraux provoqués par les différences d’épaisseur du couvert nival de cette région très accidentée. Les profils thermiques détaillés des couches de sédiments meubles et de la roche en place, proche de la surface, ont permis de suivre l’évolution du dégel dans un bon nombre de sites représentatifs des divers terrains de la région. En 1978, cette évolution est relativement linéaire entre la mi-juin et la mi-août. Une corrélation entre les mesures de la profondeur du dégel transformées logarithmiquement et les degrés-jour au-dessus de 0°C, accumulés pour les dates correspondantes, nous a permis d’évaluer les positions du front du dégel, ainsi que l’épaisseur de la couche active à la toute fin de la saison estivale. Ces mesures se situent entre un minimum de 0,5 m pour les tourbières et un maximum de 6 m pour la roche en place et les champs de blocs, avec plusieurs seuils intermédiaires, selon la nature du terrain.

Using newly developed sensor units that were more compact and accurate than earlier units (Takakura et al., 2009), this study was conducted to estimate the net photosynthesis of a plant canopy in a practical greenhouse during plant cultivation. Net photosynthesis and the ventilation flow rate are two unknowns in this greenhouse system, with adequate growth of bitter gourd plants. Environmental conditions related to evapotranspiration from the canopy and CO2 flux from the soil surface were measured respectively using the developed sensor units and a box-type CO2 concentration sensor. Heat flux from the soil was also measured. Two equations were solved: one for CO2 balance and one for water vapor balance. On-line monitoring of net photosynthesis is possible using simple and inexpensive sensors, but the obtained data of the canopy photosynthesis were scattered because of frequent changes in the ventilation amount. Furthermore, improved sensor units revealed that the evapotranspiration of the canopy was linearly related to net solar radiation in the greenhouse.

Abstract. The Southern Ocean (44–75° S) plays a critical role in the global carbon cycle, yet remains one of the most poorly sampled ocean regions. Different approaches have been used to estimate sea–air CO2 fluxes in this region: synthesis of surface ocean observations, ocean biogeochemical models, and atmospheric and ocean inversions. As part of the RECCAP (REgional Carbon Cycle Assessment and Processes) project, we combine these different approaches to quantify and assess the magnitude and variability in Southern Ocean sea–air CO2 fluxes between 1990–2009. Using all models and inversions (26), the integrated median annual sea–air CO2 flux of −0.42 ± 0.07 Pg C yr−1 for the 44–75° S region, is consistent with the −0.27 ± 0.13 Pg C yr−1 calculated using surface observations. The circumpolar region south of 58° S has a small net annual flux (model and inversion median: −0.04 ± 0.07 Pg C yr−1 and observations: +0.04 ± 0.02 Pg C yr−1), with most of the net annual flux located in the 44 to 58° S circumpolar band (model and inversion median: −0.36 ± 0.09 Pg C yr−1 and observations: −0.35 ± 0.09 Pg C yr−1). Seasonally, in the 44–58° S region, the median of 5 ocean biogeochemical models captures the observed sea–air CO2 flux seasonal cycle, while the median of 11 atmospheric inversions shows little seasonal change in the net flux. South of 58° S, neither atmospheric inversions nor ocean biogeochemical models reproduce the phase and amplitude of the observed seasonal sea–air CO2 flux, particularly in the Austral Winter. Importantly, no individual atmospheric inversion or ocean biogeochemical model is capable of reproducing both the observed annual mean uptake and the observed seasonal cycle. This raises concerns about projecting future changes in Southern Ocean CO2 fluxes. The median interannual variability from atmospheric inversions and ocean biogeochemical models is substantial in the Southern Ocean; up to 25% of the annual mean flux, with 25% of this interannual variability attributed to the region south of 58° S. Resolving long-term trends is difficult due to the large interannual variability and short time frame (1990–2009) of this study; this is particularly evident from the large spread in trends from inversions and ocean biogeochemical models. Nevertheless, in the period 1990–2009 ocean biogeochemical models do show increasing oceanic uptake consistent with the expected increase of −0.05 Pg C yr−1 decade−1. In contrast, atmospheric inversions suggest little change in the strength of the CO2 sink broadly consistent with the results of Le Quéré et al. (2007).

Geochemical and micropaleontological analyses of Labrador Sea sediments allowed us to intercalibrate indicators of paleoproductivity and paleofluxes of carbon and to reconstitute biogeochemical fluxes, notably in relation to deep sea circulation changes (Western Boundary Undercurrent and North Atlantic Deep Water). Linear or logarithmic relations are observed between the subrecent fluxes of paleoproductivity indicators (coccoliths, diatoms, dinocysts, 230Th), the 13C content of left-coiling or sinistral Neogloboquadrina pachyderma, the modern surface water carbon production, and the rates of organic and inorganic carbon (Corg, Cinorg) burial. All indicators increase by a factor of 102 to 103 in response to the evolution of paleosea-surface conditions since the last glacial maximum. Correlations are observed between authigenic Cinorg, 230Th, coccoliths, and 13C content (left-coiling or sinistral Neogloboquadrina pachyderma), and also between authigenic Corg, dinocysts, uranium, and sulfur. Relative Cinorg/Corg burial rates in the deep sediments (> 3000 m) allow us to calculate a net CO2 production in the basin. The net CO2 flux was slightly negative between ~ 20 and ~ 15 ka BP. It reached a first maximum at about 9 ka BP (~ 30 μmol∙cm−2∙a−1 CO2) followed by a decrease at ~ 8 ka BP (~ 20 μmol∙cm−2∙a−1). Since about 7 ka BP, it stabilized at ~ 35 μmol∙cm−2∙a−1. The minimum observed at about 8 ka BP corresponds to a significant rate of Corg burial accompanied with a maximum flux of redox-sensitive indicators (uranium, sulfur). This event does not correspond to any change in sea-surface temperature or salinity, nor in deep circulation, but may be related to the reorganization of the atmospheric circulation during a major breakup stage of the Laurentide ice sheet. The close correlation between the change in CO2 production in the Labrador Sea with variations of atmospheric CO2 concentrations during the last 20 ka BP suggests that the production of biogenic carbonates in subpolar basins plays a role in the global carbon cycle on the scale of glacial–interglacial climate changes.

L’eau et l’énergie sont des sujets les plus importants pour l’environnement international et le développement. La santé économique et sociale moderne dépend de l’approvisionnement durable en énergie et en eau. Beaucoup de zones à travers le monde qui souffrent de la pénurie d’eau douce sont de plus en plus dépendante du dessalement qui est une source très fiable et non conventionnelle de production d’eau douce. Ainsi, le marché du dessalement d’eau de mer a considérablement augmenté ces dernières décennies et devrait se poursuivre dans les années à venir. L’approvisionnement en eau aujourd’hui en Algérie repose en grande partie sur le dessalement. En Algérie, l’irradiation directe, utilisée pour les concentrateurs solaires thermiques dépasse les 2900 kWh/m2 dans certaines régions. L’objectif de ce papier consiste à déterminer la quantité d’eau douce produite par une installation de dessalement utilisant les procédés Multi-Stage Flash ‘MSF’ et équipée d’un champ solaire à concentrateurs cylindro-paraboliques ‘CCP’. Les résultats montrent que le taux de production par unité de surface est de l’ordre de 11,36 l/m2 pour le site d’Oran et 15,65 l/m2 pour le site de Touggourt.
