Abstract:
Starting with a review of vector fields and their integral curves, the book presents the basic equations of the subject: Euler and Navier–Stokes. Some solutions are studied next: ideal flows using conformal transformations, viscous flows such as Couette and Stokes flow around a sphere, shocks in the Burgers equation. Prandtl’s boundary layer theory and the Blasius solution are presented. Rayleigh–Taylor instability is studied in analogy with the inverted pendulum, with a digression on Kapitza’s stabilization. The possibility of transients in a linearly stable system with a non-normal operator is studied using an example by Trefethen et al. The integrable models (KdV, Hasimoto’s vortex soliton) and their hamiltonian formalism are studied. Delving into deeper mathematics, geodesics on Lie groups are studied: first using the Lie algebra and then using Milnor’s approach to the curvature of the Lie group. Arnold’s deep idea that Euler’s equations are the geodesic equations on the diffeomorphism group is then explained and its curvature calculated. The next three chapters are an introduction to numerical methods: spectral methods based on Chebychev functions for ODEs, their application by Orszag to solve the Orr–Sommerfeld equation, finite difference methods for elementary PDEs, the Magnus formula and its application to geometric integrators for ODEs. Two appendices give an introduction to dynamical systems: Arnold’s cat map, homoclinic points, Smale’s horse shoe, Hausdorff dimension of the invariant set, Aref ’s example of chaotic advection. The last appendix introduces renormalization: Ising model on a Cayley tree and Feigenbaum’s theory of period doubling.

Abstract:
In this chapter, we deal with polaritons as a “quantum fluid of light”, described by variants of the Gross–Pitaevskii equation. We discuss how interactions between flowing polaritons and a defect allow to study their superfluid regime and generate topological defects. Including spin gives rise to an effective magnetic field (polariton spin-orbit coupling) that acts on the topological defects—half-solitons and half-vortices—behaving as effective magnetic monopoles. We describe various techniques to create periodic potentials, that can lead to the formation of polaritonic bands and gaps with a unique flexibility. Special focus is given to topologically nontrivial bands, leading to a polariton topological insulator, based on a polariton graphene analog.

The pericardium forms a continuous sac around the heart, analogous to the pleura surrounding the lungs, and the peritoneum surrounding the abdominal viscera. Between the parietal and visceral layers of the serous pericardium is the pericardial space, which normally contains a small volume of pericardial fluid. The clinical spectrum of pericardial diseases can be divided into: pericarditis, caused by acute inflammation; pericardial effusion, or fluid accumulation in the pericardial space, leading to tamponade; and constrictive pericarditis, caused by chronic infiltration or inflammation leading to pericardial constriction.

Abstract:
There is a remarkable analogy between Euler’s equations for a rigid body and his equations for an ideal fluid. The unifying idea is that of a Lie algebra with an inner product, which is not invariant, on it. The concepts of a vector space, Lie algebra, and inner product are reviewed. A hamiltonian dynamical system is derived from each metric Lie algebra. The Virasoro algebra (famous in string theory) is shown to lead to the KdV equation; and in a limiting case, to the Burgers equation for shocks. A hamiltonian formalism for two-dimensional Euler equations is then developed in detail. A discretization of these equations (using a spectral method) is then developed using mathematical ideas from quantum mechanics. Then a hamiltonian formalism for the full three-dimensional Euler equations is developed. The Clebsch variables which provide canonical pairs for fluid dynamics are then explained, in analogy to angular momentum.

Abstract:
There is a deep analogy between the physics of crystalline solids and the behaviour of superfluids, dating back to the pioneering work of Phillip Anderson, Paul Martin, and others. The stiffness to shear deformations in a periodic crystal resembles the super-fluid density that controls the behaviour of supercurrents in neutral superfluids such as He4. Dislocations in solids have a close analogy with quantized vortices in superfluids. Remarkable recent experiments on the way rod-shaped bacteria elongate their cell walls have focused attention on the dynamics and interactions of point-like dislocation defects in partially-ordered cylindrical crystalline monolayers. In these lectures, we review the physics of superfluid helium films on cylinders and discuss how confinement in one direction affects vortex interactions with supercurrents. Although there are similarities with the way dislocations respond to strains on cylinders, important differences emerge due to the vector nature of the topological charges characterizing the dislocations.

The existence of the syndromes of relative adrenal insufficiency, or critical illness corticosteroid insufficiency, are debatable. In sepsis, there are alterations in plasma cortisol profiles, and corticotropin responsiveness with marked variability in responses between patients. It is probable that the spectrum of plasma and tissue glucocorticoid changes may represent a ‘sick euadrenal state’ analogous to the sick euthyroid state and may not reflect adrenocortical insufficiency. Treatment of acute adrenal crisis should not be delayed for the results of adrenal testing, and should consist of immediate supportive measures, fluid resuscitation, and high-dose intravenous glucocorticoid therapy. Admission to intensive care with a primary diagnosis of hyperadrenalism is uncommon. Patients usually present uncontrolled hypertension, electrolyte abnormalities or encephalopathy.

Abstract:
In this article, we review the basic physics of viscoelastic phase separation including fracture phase separation. We show that with an increase in the ratio of the deformation rate of phase separation to the slowest mechanical relaxation rate the type of phase separation changes from fluid phase separation, to viscoelastic phase separation, to fracture phase separation. We point out that there is a physical analogy of this to the transition of the mechanical fracture behaviour of materials under shear from liquid-type, to ductile, to brittle fracture. This allows us to discuss phase separation and shear-induced instability of disordered materials including soft matter, on the same physical ground. Finally it should be noted that what we are going to describe in this article has not necessarily been firmly established and there still remain many open problems to be studied in the future.

This chapter focuses on the way in which relational internationalists referenced the transnational context of individual interests and how the pursuit of order and uniformity fits within the relational internationalist perspective. It is commonly assumed that all nineteenth-century individual-centered theories, especially Savigny’s, pled for an intransigent pursuit of order and uniformity. However, this chapter argues that this was rather the main motivation of state-centered theories focused on an analogy between PrIL and PublIL, and of individualistic theories focused on individual liberty. By emphasizing how their reconstruction of jus gentium and natural law was placed alongside their insistence on the particularity of each people, this chapter shows that the universalistic ideology of the relational internationalist authors referenced throughout this book is, in fact, considerably more fluid and more restrained than that of state-centric or individualistic authors. Furthermore, this chapter brings the relational internationalist perspective in conversation with twentieth-century German interest jurisprudence.

This chapter begins with a definition of spin Hall effects, which are a group of phenomena that result from spin–orbit interaction. These phenomena link orbital motion to spin direction and act as a spin-dependent magnetic field. In its simplest form, an electrical current gives rise to a transverse spin current that induces spin accumulation at the boundaries of the sample, the direction of the spins being opposite at opposing boundaries. It can be intuitively understood by analogy with the Magnus effect, where a spinning ball in a fluid deviates from its straight path in a direction that depends on the sense of rotation. spin Hall effects can be associated with a variety of spin-orbit mechanisms, which can have intrinsic or extrinsic origin, and depend on the sample geometry, impurity band structure, and carrier density but do not require a magnetic field or any kind of magnetic order to occur.
