Gough, William Dennis. "Automated Flow Path Design Optimization Using Mesh Morphing." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2011. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2843.

Full text
Abstract:
The use of CAD models and CFD analysis has become an essential part of fluid flow design. To reduce the time spent determining a design, optimization frameworks have been implemented to automate the process. Mesh morphing has been implemented within these frameworks to further reduce the time needed. While optimization methods have been developed to optimize a fluid flow path, the optimum design needs to be recreated in a CAD model. A method has been developed which eliminates the need to recreate the optimal results in CAD. This is accomplished by using mesh morphing, CAD and CFD together in an optimization framework. The method developed has been implemented with a significant time savings over the use of a traditional meshing optimization framework.

Agbenowosi, Newland Komla. "GIS based optimal design of sewer networks and pump stations." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/43184.

Full text
Abstract:

In the planning and design of sewer networks, most of the decisions are spatially dependent because of the right of way considerations and the desire to have flow by gravity. This research addresses the application of combined optimization-geographic information system (GIS) technology in the design process. The program developed for the design uses selected manhole locations to generate the candidate potential sewer networks. The design area is delineated into subwatersheds for determining the locations for lift stations when gravity flow is not possible. Flows from upstream subwatersheds are transported to the downstream subwatersheds via a force main. The path and destination of each force main in the system is determined by applying the Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm to select the least cost path from a set of potential paths. This method seeks to minimize the total dynamic head. A modified length is used to represent the length of each link or force main segment. The modified length is the physical length of the link (representing the friction loss) plus an equivalent length (representing the static head). The least cost path for the force main is the path with the least total modified length. The design approach is applied to two areas in the town of Blacksburg, Virginia. The resulting network and the force main paths are discussed.

This research aims first to establish the analysis capabilities on AMD Athlon XP heat sinks by using the commercial FEM package, ANSYS. A good comparison between the experimental data and the numerical results was obtained. Many different inlet/outlet location combinations in the same design space were defined, and the proposed method is then used to design the heat dissipation fins based on air flow patterns. By using identical fin materials, the air flow based techniques can automatically create curvilinear fins that will minimize the maximum temperature of the fins. To test the effectiveness of the proposed air flow based method, for each inlet/outlet conditions, the straight line fins of the optimum angle orientation is obtained and the performance is compared to the curvilinear fins obtained by using the proposed air flow based method. Experiments show that the air flow based method can be used to create curvilinear fins with improved heat dissipation capabilities.

Several studies about automated guided vehicle system have been discussed in recently years. E- specially in flow path and P/D location design p- roblem, various kinds of flow path such tandem, single loop and traditional guide path have been studied with different features and perform diff- erent goal. In this thesis, an IP model to determine the optimal, uni- directional flow path and P/D locat- ion that permitted separable P/D location in one department is presented. We then develope a two phase peocedure to assign flow path directions a- nd locate P/D station of each department by cons- idering the vehicle congestion simultaneous. Two examples are illustrated and show the results for these important issues in automated guided vehic- le system.

The design of the layout arrangement and material flow path in flexible manufacturing system have a lot to do with production activities. Therefore, how to seek an efficient layout arrangement so as to lower production cost becomes a crucial issue to the industry. In this essay, department refers to a pick-up and drop-off point of fixed shape. There are two stages of design to obtain the solution in literature. The first stage combines space-filling curve and steepest-descent-pairwise-interchange to get the department relative positions and department flow sequence. The second stage makes use of the result from the first stage and applies the instruction mode in the mixed integer programming to proceed detailed design. Steepest—descent —pairwise -exchange used in the first stage is, however, subject to local optimum. Thus, in this essay, simulated annealing which escapes the trait of local optimum is practiced for substitute and the second stage takes the model as in reference. According to the experiment result, the method of seeking solution based on simulated annealing leads to a better result.

This thesis proposes an integrated and low-cost system of localization and control for an indoor omni-directional wheeled mobile robot using optical flow sensors. The system is capable of commanding the robot to perform velocity control, path tracking, collision detection and dynamic path planning tasks in various unknown landforms. Moreover, the omni-directional wheels offer a higher mobility in an indoor environment, and the embedded Ethernet technology is used to achieve the objectives of distributed computation and remote control. Presently, we can command this platform via wireless network to perform velocity control, path tracking, collision detection and dynamical path planning tasks in all following landforms: plank, carpet, terrazzo floor and inclined plank. The thesis is divided into three parts: The first part is the introduction to the extremum seeking algorithm, the path tracking method, the optical flow localization method and the omni-directional motion algorithm. The second part introduces the overall hardware and software architecture of the platform. The third part is the implementation of overall system on the platform and the discussions and analyses on the experimental results.

At present, most of the energy used by human beings comes from thermal power plant, nuclear power plant, and other highly polluting centralized power generation systems. However, in the light of environmental awareness, decentralized power plant has appealed to improve energy independence, efficiency and reduces greenhouse gas effects. To reduce the cost of development and accelerate the process of experiment. Our senior’s developed turbine engines which combined with commercial centrifugal turbocharger and the design of axial power turbine section for high efficiency, low pollution, modularization and low cost of micro turbine generator (turbo generator). The main purpose of this study is to establish a system and method to turn the commercially available centrifugal turbocharger into a turboshaft engine. The main process is to establish task requirements through the analysis of Gasturb micro-turbine thermal cycle diagram. With one dimensional design tool, different parameter of axial flow compressor impeller on the simulation analysis, using the finite volume method provided hexahedral grids, CFX flow field analysis and post-processing finally decided to place a conform to the working conditions of power turbine blade section. The power turbine specifications obtained in the experimental results have a total-to-total isentropic efficiency of 88.6%, a work volume of 61.03 kW, a mass flow of 0.529 kg/s, By adjusting different suction pressure surface distributions can reduce the separation phenomenon and the change in the entropy value when the airflow is passed.

In the past, most of the research in facility layout was focus on the closed-loop layout and linear layout. There was few study focus on “ladder layout,” even it is also one of the popular layout types in flexible manufacturing system. Therefore, a systematical procedure of building up the unidirectional ladder layout is proposed in this study. This paper addresses the facility layout procedure of multiple-floor with unidirectional flow path in the flexible manufacturing system. In the first stage, the Flow Line Analysis method is used to find out the best result of machine flow path. In the second stage, change the machine flow path becomes a snake-shaped flow line layout. Consider the achievable for each machine, fill in the indentation of snake-shaped flow line. Then, a mathematic model is proposed to adjust the final I/O point location of each machine in its ladder level. Finally, Tabu search is introduced to improve the initial solution. The four stage procedure are experimented to show its performance.

The demand for heat elimination increases greatly as the efficiency and power of semiconductor components increase; hence, increasing the heat dissipating capacity of cooling fins is an important topic at present. The water cooling system is an effective method. This study aimed to discuss the effect of changing the geometry inside the flow channel of the liquid-cooled cooling module for microchip radiation in the water cooling system on the cooling efficiency of the cooling module. It also used the CFD software and actual experiment for verification. Three types of cooling modules were analyzed to discuss the variance in heat dispersion and the influence. CFD software FLUENT was used to calculate the cooling fins of three modules, in order to further discuss the heat conduction problem and observe the changes in internal flow field and the distribution of temperature field at different CPU wattages, and verify the accuracy of cooling modules of numerical simulation through experiment. The CFD was used to predict the flow field change and temperature field distribution at different flow velocities. According to simulation analysis and experimental results, the thermal resistance value of cooling module will not change obviously as the wattage increases, and the thermal resistance value decreases as the flow velocity increases. The snakelike cylindrical composite flow channel has the best cooling effect, followed by the snakelike flow channel, and the cylindrical flow channel has the worst effect. The thermal resistance values are 0.08℃/W, 0.1℃/W and 0.15℃/W respectively.
