Abstract:
This paper uses FLOTRAN to estimate the resin flow permeability of fiber tow in RTM. Nine models of different fractions varies from 0.4~0.75 have been built, and the random process of the fiber’s distribution is realized by APDL code. The results show that the dispersion of fiber determines the fluid flow channels, which effect the pressure and velocity’s distribution; the FLOTRAN can be used to estimate the transverse permeability of the fiber bundles.

Abstract:
The finite-element program, ANSYS/FLOTRAN, has been enhanced at Release 5.7 to predict free surface flows with surface tension in complex geometries. The two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes and energy equations are solved in both Cartesian and axisymmetric coordinate systems. At Release 5.6, the free surface capabilities have been incorporated into ANSYS/FLOTRAN using the CLEAR-VOF algorithm. The main contribution of this work is to implement a surface tension model into ANSYS/FLOTRAN to study free surface flows with surface tension in complex geometries. Both normal and tangential components of surface tension forces are modeled at the interface through a continuum surface force (CSF) model. This new algorithm is first validated with two model problems: a droplet in equilibrium and an oscillating droplet. For the first problem, the computed pressure value is compared with the theoretical value, whereas for the second problem, the oscillation frequency is compared with both the analytical solution and experimental data. The computer program is then applied to thermocapillary flows in two types of trapezoidal cavities to investigate the interesting flow and heat transfer characteristics. Systematic calculations are performed to study the influence of Marangoni number, capillary number and static contact angle on Marangoni convection.

The advanced result analysis based on post-processing of ANSYS was conducted by MATLAB. According to the allowable inhomogeneity and its application of velocity and temperature at outlet, the most possible broken regions of aluminum sheets at outlet could be predicted in the case of speed increasing of the drawing-sheet and thickness reducing of the aluminium sheet during roll casting.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate the fluid-structural response to pulsatile Newtonian and non-Newtonian blood flow through an axisymmetric stenosed vessel using FLOTRAN and ANSYS. This is to provide a basic understanding of atherosclerosis. The flow was set to be laminar and follows a sinusoidal waveform. The solid model was set to have isotropic elastic properties. The Fluid-Structural Interaction (FSI) coupling was two-way and iterative. Rigid and Newtonian cases were investigated to provide an understanding on the effects of incorporating FSI into the model. The wall expansion was found to decrease the axial velocity and increase the recirculation effects of the flow. To validate the models and methods used, the results were compared with the study by Lee and Xu [2002] and Ohja et al [1989]. Close comparisons were achieved, suggesting the models used were valid. Two non-Newtonian models were investigated with FSI: Carreau and Power Law models. The Carreau model fluid behaviour was very close to the Newtonian model. The Power Law model produced significant difference in viscosity, velocity and wall shear stress distributions. Pressure distribution for all models was similar. In order to quantify the changes, Importance Factor (IG) was introduced to determine the overall non-Newtonian effects at two regions: the entire flow model and about the vessel wall. The Carreau model showed reasonable values of IG whereas the Power Law model showed excessive values. Transient and geometrical effects were found to affect the Importance Factor. The stress distributions for all models were found to be similar. Highest stress occurred at the shoulders of the stenosis where a stress concentration occurred due to sharp corners of the geometry and large bending moments. The highest stresses were in the axial direction. Notable circumferential stress was found at the ends of the vessel. Carreau model produced slightly higher stresses than the other models. Wall stresses were found to be primarily influenced by internal pressure, rather than wall shear stresses.

I och med de stora förändringar Försvarsmakten genomgått under omstruktureringen från det tidigareinvasionsförsvaret till insatsförsvaret har nya förutsättningar för och krav på personalförsörjningen avförbanden uppstått. Dagens värnpliktssystem är inte anpassat för att på ett effektivt sätt erbjuda underlagför bemanning av de insatsförband Försvarsmakten producerar idag. Möjligheten att i framtidenkontraktsanställa personal för tidsbegränsad tjänstgöring är en möjlig väg att personalförsörjamorgondagens svenska Försvarsmakt. Svenska flottan hade under första hälften av 1900-talet enorganisation som bestod av kontraktsanställda sjömän för tjänstgöring ombord på flottans stridsfartyg,sjömanskåren. Denna kår rekryterade ungdomar direkt från civil folkskola men även från en militärorganisation, skeppsgossekåren, som hade till uppgift att i tidig ålder rekrytera och utbilda ungdomar förtjänst ombord på fartyg. Det är denna unika rekryterings- och utbildnings organisation som behandlas iföreliggande uppsats. Skeppsgossekåren bildades 1685 och lades ned 1939. Det unika medskeppsgossekåren var dess uppgift att utbilda unga pojkar till goda sjömän för att på kort sikt ingå iflottans lägre personalkategorier som kontraktsanställda sjömän men även på lång sikt bidraga medpersonal till underofficersutbildningarna.Skeppsgossekårens organisatoriska plats samt den kompetens i form av utbildade sjömän somlevererades till flottans fartyg är utgångspunkter i studien. Även nyttan av den civila utbildningskeppsgossekåren erbjöd sina elever och vad den kompetensen innebar för flottan behandlas i uppsatsen.Det som ytterliggare väcker intresse är det faktum att det personalförsörjningssystem somskeppsgossekåren och sjömanskåren var del av även visar hur rekrytering till underofficersyrket ihuvudsak men även till mindre del av officersyrket fungerade med kontraktsanställda sjömän somrekryteringskälla. Skeppsgossekåren lades ned 1939 huruvida nedläggningen gick att motivera utifrånorganisations relaterade frågor eller kompetens frågor hos de utbildade skeppsgossarna ärutgångspunkten för uppsatsens metod att hantera ämnet.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates how social order was created in the Swedish navy at the end of the Swedish imperial age (1670-1716).  During the period the Swedish navy went through many changes that led to an expanding and re-structuring of both the administration of the Admiralty and the naval activities. These changes contributed to shape the life on board ships and at shipyards in more fixed ways than before. The dissertation analyses the social order on the basis of three overlapping themes, inspired by Michel Foucault’s theories on power relationships and the exercise of power. First it investigates how the navy upheld its hierarchy and formed the relations between superior officers and subordinate men, second how the Admiralty and officers exercised power in order to make the subordinates behave in the desired way and third how the subordinates reacted to the control; especially how they formed different strategies of resistance to challenge or escape it. Using micro-history methodology, in-depth analyses have been made of individuals and situations mostly found in judicial cases from the navy’s own court (the admiralty court).     Social relations were however not only a result of naval control. They were also highly guided by social orders that existed in civil society. Thus naval rank emerged with marital status, age, experience and masculinity ideals into a complex and shifting hierarchy that was constantly questioned. The dissertation shows that upholding naval social order was dependent on the fact that the Admiralty and officers used both productive and repressive power strategies simultaneously. The naval order offered opportunities and careers to those who were obedient and skilful but could threaten the disobedient troublemaker with severe punishments. The order was also highly dependent on individual relations and situations. Since order primarily was challenged in face to face- situations the superiors had to devise power strategies to control those situations. By doing that they at the same time reduced all resistance to separate, single events and repeatedly rejected the slightest implication of any criticism towards the general social order. The power relations thus were a delicate theater were both superiors and subordinates pretended their actions meant something else than it did. From the point of view of the subordinates the social order always was about obligations and rights but from the superiors’ perspective social order basically was the main difference between chaos and control.

Abstract:

Den Svenska flottans ytstridsförmåga är idag uppbyggd av ett antal relativt små fartyg. Det är ett resultat av ett koncept som togs fram under det kalla kriget. Konceptet kallas för ”den lätta flottan” och bygger på idén att med hjälp av modern teknik så kan samma förmågor som ryms i ett stort ytstridsfartyg spridas på flera små enheter. Svenska flottans ytstridskrafter är således anpassade till det gamla invasionsförsvaret. Uppsatsens syfte är att undersöka om flottan, mot bakgrund av ominriktningen till ett insatsförsvar, har anledning att åter införskaffa större fartyg.

I uppsatsen används de grundläggande förmågorna (ledning, verkan, information och underrättelser, rörelse, skydd samt uthållighet) som verktyg för att analysera Marinens uppgifter. Samma förmågor har sedan använts för att jämföra en korvetts och en fregatts egenskaper. Med hjälp av erfarenheter från Marinens insats i Libanon har en diskussion förts kring detta.

Allt sammantaget har gett resultatet att dagens lätta ytstridskrafter ej spelat ut sin roll, men insatsförsvaret ställer krav på framförallt rörlighet och uthållighet som endast fartyg i minst fregattstorlek kan leva upp till.


During the Cold War, the Swedish Navy developed a concept of surface warfare based on the idea that forces should be spread out on a number of smaller surface combatants rather than on a few big ones. This was possible due to new technology and new weapon systems such as guided torpedoes and missiles. The old dreadnoughts and battleships had become obsolete.

This concept, formed in a time when defence against invasion was the prime task of the Swedish Armed Forces, is still today the foundation on which the Swedish Navy is built on. Its surface warfare forces consist of small corvettes between 300 and 600 metric tonnes.

Since the end of the Cold War, the Swedish Armed Forces has undergone a transformation and is now a smaller, mission-oriented armed forces with ambitions of expeditionary capabilities. This means new tasks for the Swedish Navy and the question has been raised whether the small surface warfare ships are up to the task?

In this essay, the tasks of the Swedish Navy are analysed and broken down into six capacities. The same six capacities are used to compare the capabilities of a corvette and a frigate. The outcome of these analyses is then discussed and the experiences gained from the Swedish Navy’s mission in Lebanon have been taken into consideration.

The results show that while today’s small corvettes perform well at some tasks, for example force protection in extreme littorals, bigger ships are needed to carry out some tasks such as endurance-demanding sea control missions in far away seas.

Specialistofficerare framhålls ofta som ryggraden i svensk militär förmåga. Men vad innebär det i praktiken och hur förvaltar svenska flottan sina specialistofficerare och deras funktionsområden?  Kunskapen om specialistofficerare är begränsad ur ett professions- och militärsociologiskt perspektiv, där forskningen traditionellt fokuserat på officerens roll. Innevarande studie syftar till att bidra till en ökad förståelse för de faktorer som påverkar specialistofficerares förmåga till utveckling av expertis och yrkeskunnande.  Studien genomförs som en kvalitativ fallstudie och analyserar flottans specialistofficersfunktioner telekrig och luftförsvar i en kritisk organisationsanalys. Metodologiskt kombinerar studien empiri från intervjuer och policydokument tillsammans med analys av hur flottan faktiskt utformat sin organisation och specialistofficerarnas förutsättningar i realiteten.  Studien visar att flottans specialistofficerare har anammat en egen gynnsam professionell identitet som värdesätter expertis och specialisering framför Försvarsmaktens traditionellt vertikala karriärstruktur. Parallellt identifieras att organisationen påvisar brister i att omhänderta och utveckla specialistofficerarnas kompetens utanför den direkta fartygskontexten.

De plus en plus de constructeurs proposent des accélérateurs de calculs à base de circuits reconfigurables FPGA, cette technologie présentant bien plus de souplesse que le microprocesseur. Valoriser cette flexibilité dans le domaine de l'accélération de calcul flottant en utilisant les langages de description de circuits classiques (VHDL ou Verilog) reste toutefois très difficile, voire impossible parfois. Cette thèse a contribué au développement du logiciel FloPoCo, qui offre aux utilisateurs familiers avec VHDL un cadre C++ de description d'opérateurs arithmétiques génériques adapté au calcul reconfigurable. Ce cadre distingue explicitement la fonctionnalité combinatoire d'un opérateur, et la problématique de son pipeline pour une précision, une fréquence et un FPGA cible donnés. Afin de pouvoir utiliser FloPoCo pour concevoir des opérateurs haute performance en virgule flottante, il a fallu d'abord concevoir des blocs de bases optimisés. Nous avons d'abord développé des additionneurs pipelinés autour des lignes de propagation de retenue rapides, puis, à l'aide de techniques de pavages, nous avons conçu de gros multiplieurs, possiblement tronqués, utilisant des petits multiplieurs. L'évaluation de fonctions élémentaires en flottant implique souvent l'évaluation en virgule fixe d'une fonction. Nous présentons un opérateur générique de FloPoCo qui prend en entrée l'expression de la fonction à évaluer, avec ses précisions d'entrée et de sortie, et construit un évaluateur polynomial optimisé de cette fonction. Ce bloc de base a permis de développer des opérateurs en virgule flottante pour la racine carrée et l'exponentielle qui améliorent considérablement l'état de l'art. Nous avons aussi travaillé sur des techniques de compilation avancée pour adapter l'exécution d'un code C aux pipelines flexibles de nos opérateurs. FloPoCo a pu ainsi être utilisé pour implanter sur FPGA des applications complètes.

Uppsatsen syftar till att förklara de drivkrafter som fanns bakom den intensiva utveck-lingen av svenska flottans ubåtsjaktförmåga under den senare halvan av 1940-talet. Detta sker genom att utvecklingen studeras ur två olika perspektiv med avsikten att finna vilket av dem som har den starkaste förklaringskraften. Perspektivstudien bygger på två statsvetenskapliga modeller vilka har utvecklats av Graham Allison i boken ”Essence of Decision”. Denna studieväg har tidigare använts av andra forskare i liknande syfte med gott resultat. I detta arbete benämns de bägge perspektiven för det ”rationella aktörs-perspektivet” respektive för det ”interna maktkampsperspektivet”. För de respektive perspektiven finns av Allison rekommenderade frågeställningar, dessa är översatta och omformulerade för att passa uppsatsens ämne. Frågeställningarna får också bilda analytiska nät, vilka används för att undersöka empirin och skapa ett underlag där svar på uppsatsens frågeställning återfinns.    Resultatet av arbetet är att det rationella aktörsperspektivet har den starkaste förklarings-kraften och kan i huvudsak stå ensamt för förklaringen bakom drivkrafterna. Det interna maktkampsperspektivet kan inte ensamt stå bakom några drivkrafter, men däremot finns här den igångsättande kraften som leder till att ubåtsjaktförmågeutvecklingen igångsätts. Den bästa förklaringskraften erhålls om de bägge perspektiven tillåts att gemensamt förklara drivkrafterna. Medvetna val och en vilja till att ge Marinen en god förmåga att i såväl fred som i neutralitet och krig, kunna hävda Sveriges territorium är drivkraften bakom ubåtsjaktförmågeutvecklingen.
The aim of this study is to explain the driving forces behind the development of Swedish Anti-Submarine Warfare skills during the late 1940s. The study of the development is conducted using two different perspectives and comparing them to determine which one of them that has the best explanatory power. The approach has been made with two separate scientific explanations from Graham Allison’s book “Essence of Decision”, they are called the “rational actor” and “governmental politics”. Allison has stated a number of questions for each of the two different perspectives. These questions have been translated and adapted to the purpose of this study. The questions have been used to develop two different analytical nets, one for each perspective and these nets have been used to analyse the empirical data and answer the question of the study.   The result of the study is that the perspective of the rational actor has a strong possibility to explain the course of events which led to the development of Swedish ASW-capability. In the perspective of governmental politics the starting factor of the development can be found but it is not enough to explain the development on its own. The two perspectives together give an even stronger explanation of the driving forces behind the development. There are some deliberate choices made by people in charge and a strong will to create a capable Navy which will be able to claim the right of Swedish territorial waters during peace, neutrality and war, which creates the starting factors leading towards the build-up of the modern Swedish ASW-capability.

Abstract:
A novel micromachined accelerometer without proof mass, based on the buoyancy of a heated fluid around a polysilicon heater, has previously been developed and reported. Significant features of this class of accelerometer include low cost and the combination of high sensitivity with high survivability. However, one of its big disadvantages is thermal drift: the sensitivity changes rapidly as the ambient temperature changes. A recent numerical and experimental study has shown that the sensitivity of the convective accelerometer is a function of the Rayleigh number of the working fluid. Using this criterion, a few liquids were selected as potential working fluids to improve the sensitivity of the accelerometer. The CFD program ‘FLOTRAN’ was used to model accelerometer performance using each of these fluids. Based on FLOTRAN modeling, some fluids were selected for experimental investigation. The thermal drift of the accelerometer using different working fluids was documented and the reasons for this thermal drift were discovered. Based on this observation, some possible solutions were proposed to reduce or eliminate the thermal drift.

Abstract:
The effects of artificial roughness for the purpose of thermal performance improvement in pressurized water nuclear reactors are investigated. The artificial roughness consists of two-dimensional ribs parallel to the turbulent flow. The fuel rod bundle subchannel is preliminarily modeled as an annulus using the finite element method in ANSYS/FLOTRAN. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved from the SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model for the simulated annulus thermal-flow. The analyses are performed for ribs dimensions and pitch provided by published previous work. It is found that, heat transfer and differential pressure have similar behavior with highest heat transfer occurring at the reattachment point. The finite element model describes well the characteristics of turbulent flow in smooth and rough rod when compared to previous semi-empirical models. Next paper extends the analysis by comparing numerical results with experimental test data and sensitivity analyses for different roughness configurations.

Conventional method of performing Elasto-hydrodynamic Lubrication (EHL) analysis on a partial arc bearing involves simplification of actual physical model and developing complex codes. This paper presents the overall EHL analysis of a radialy adjustable single 60° partial arc bearing using the sequential application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Computational Structural Dynamics (CSD). Here the coupled field analysis uses the capabilities of commercially available Finite Element Software ANSYS/FLOTRAN and the technique of Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI). The pressure field has been obtained using CFD considering the flow to be laminar. Stress distribution and deformation in the pad due to resulting pressure force is obtained using Finite Element Method (FEM), satisfying the boundary conditions. The stress distribution indicates the critical points in the pad. In this paper the static characteristics of radialy adjustable single 60° partial arc bearings are predicted for different eccentricity ratios and length to diameter (L/D) ratios. The results show reasonable agreement in general.

El sector de transporte genera contribuciones significativas de emisiones locales y globales de gases de efecto invernadero y también de material particulado. Los servicios de transporte masivo en buses presentan altas tasas de emisiones dado el tipo de combustible del cual dependen y, en el caso de América Latina y el Caribe (ALC) estas externalidades son aún más severas dados los rezagos de regulación del sector, la informalidad y la edad promedio muy alta de la flota vehicular. Este documento presenta a la utilización de la tecnología remote sensing como una herramienta para reducción de las emisiones contaminantes locales de vehículos de transporte de pasajeros del rea Metropolitana de Asunción, Paraguay. El documento parte de una presentación de casos de aplicación de remote sensing en varias ciudades del mundo y de la región de ALC y luego delinea los beneficios, consideraciones y recomendaciones de replicar la implementación del remote sensing en Paraguay. Se analiza el potencial de esta tecnología para identificar vehículos con tasas más altas de emisiones locales, y a partir de esta herramienta, conceptualizar y desarrollar un mecanismo de aplicación de normas de emisiones contaminantes en Paraguay, que por medio de un sistema de multas sustente un fondo para la renovación de flota del transporte.
