Abstract:

Fernando de Herrera es una de las principales figuras literarias del siglo XVI y, además de exégeta de Garcilaso en sus célebres Anotaciones, fue también un valioso poeta de la escuela petrarquista. Sin embargo, una parte no despreciable de su producción está compuesta en versos octosílabos. Este corpus consta de 26 poemas a la manera ‘cancioneril’ y no entró en la tradición impresa de la poesía de Fernando de Herrera: de hecho está transmitido por un cancionero manuscrito del siglo XVII (ms. 83-5-13 de la Biblioteca Colombina de Sevilla) que contiene un florilegio de varios autores compilado por el erudito sevillano José Maldonado Dávila y por otro testimonio posterior del mismo florilegio (ms. 10293 de la BNE). Los textos figuran además en la edición de José María Asensio de la Controversia sobre las Anotaciones a la obra de Garcilaso (Sevilla, 1870) y fueron editados sucesivamente por José Manuel Blecua (1975) y Cristóbal Cuevas (1985). Este artículo se centra especialmente en un poema caracterizado por la cita de versos célebres de poetas del siglo XV (Alfonso Álvarez de Villasandino, Jorge Manrique, Garci Sánchez de Badajoz, entre otros) en el que se aprecia el talante lúdico de la escritura herreriana pero también el testimonio de una memoria literaria no extinguida ni olvidada. Del poema en cuestión se ofrece también una edición crítica con una importante enmienda que atañe a la secuencia de las coplas.

La incorporación de la realidad americana a la cultura occidental tiene consecuencias de primera importancia para el vocabulario propio de la medicina, que experimenta un notable proceso de ampliación léxica. En tal línea, este trabajo pretende analizar algunos mecanismos discursivos que se utilizan a la hora de incorporar los indigenismos, para lo cual se describirán las estructuras empleadas con esta finalidad en el Florilegio medicinal del jesuita Juan de Esteyneffer, todo ello con el propósito esencial de levantar un inventario de tales procedimientos textuales, pero también de establecer las coincidencias entre el discurso médico y otras tradiciones discursivas.

La presenza di Egidio d’Assisi nelle prime legendae agiografiche francescane, le tre legendae egidiane (secoli XIII-XIV) e le varie raccolte di Dicta che riuniscono le sue parole di sapienza fanno di Egidio la figura più rappresentativa della prima fraternità minorita. Ever since L. Traube coined the phrase in 1911, the Twelfth Century has been known as the "Aetas Ovidiana," the century during which Ovid's poetry was read, imitated, excerpted, glossed, and allegorized more frequently than that of any other classical author. The frequency of Ovidian references has led many to assume that the twelfth-century scholars who cited Ovid so often must have enjoyed an intimate and thorough knowledge of the poet's works. Although there are a number of possible sources from which scholars of that age might have encountered Ovid, this study confines itself to the Florilegium Gallicum, described as "de loin le plus important et le plus riche des florileges classiques anterieurs au XIIIe siecle." A careful consideration of the excerpts from Ovid's amatory poetry as they appear in the Florilegium Gallicum reveals that this florilegium offered its readers a very limited and superficial understanding of the poet. The obvious textual manipulation by the excerptor of this important twelfth-century florilegium resulted in a bowdlerized Ovid, drained of most of his wit, wickedness, and vivid physical imagery.

Para comprender y asimilar la evolución actual y el alcance internacional de la transparencia pública y el derecho de acceso a la información pública holísticamente en nuestros días se propone un estudio de un conjunto internacional de normas de diferentes dimensiones. A tal efecto, sistémicamente, se lleva a cabo primeramente una compilación y clasificación de normas, declaraciones, disposiciones y resoluciones internacionalmente, y en segundo lugar a nivel europeo en las declaraciones comunitarias, las directivas y las resoluciones propias. A ello le sigue un comentario y un florilegio que trae a la luz la situación actual de la misma desde lo global a lo comunitario. El estudio concluye en una panorámica general de lo que se prevé es la dirección jurídica de un emergente derecho fundamental de acceso a la información pública, la tendencia y la evolución de la transparencia pública y su posterior impacto en el derecho comparado en el que se reflejan en los últimos acontecimientos en cada uno de los campos del derecho.

Algunos motivos en las exposiciones-capítulo han sido la visualidad y pasividad, la magia y el poder de curar, la extravagancia y sensualidad cuir, escuchar, hablar, leer en lo articulado e inarticulado, en lo insinuado en lo escondido. El tarot floral o florilegio de Jeleton es un juego de cartas. Las cartas convocan principios de las flores, de las cuerpas y de las figuras. Los principios son poderes, no poder del que te tiene, sino poder del que tú tienes. El poder de ver lo que no aparece. El poder de leer lo que no está escrito. El poder de oir lo no dicho. El poder de tocar lo que es negado, está presente. A flor de piel. “Historia Política de las Flores” propone un estudio iconológico desde la sociología de la imagen, sobre los diversos imaginarios de flora. Propone una mitopoiesis deconstruida, hecha autohistoria y biomitografía. Una labor de investigación en repertorios colectivos simbólicos sobre la representación de la flor, que va del relato, a la poesía, la canción, la decoración... Abstract This essay applies the approaches of the “new medievalism,” mouvance or “mutability” in particular, to medieval textual materials purporting to contain parts of the classics, focusing on Lunyu 論語 (Analects), Shangshu 尚書 (Documents), and Xiaojing 孝經 (Classic of Filial Piety). Using Dunhuang manuscripts of the florilegium titled Xinji wenci jiujing chao 新集文詞九經抄 (New Compilation of Phrases Excerpted from the Nine Classics), the essay shows that the texts of these classics presented by such compilations differed substantially from the “official” texts of the time as represented by the versions carved in stone during the Kaicheng reign period (836–841). The essay further argues that such florilegia as Xinji wenci jiujing chao were likely widely used, implying that many readers in the period may have had a different conception of the contents of the classics from what we might assume they had. This has implications for our understanding of intertextuality in literary works from the period.

Abstract:

La apropiación por parte de la ciencia imperial hispánica del conocimiento botánico de los nativos americanos, especialmente en lo relativo al uso y consumo de plantas medicinales, es un fenómeno ampliamente conocido y estudiado: en él, la Compañía de Jesús desempeñó un papel preponderante, puesto que los jesuitas difundieron estos conocimientos por las distintas provincias de la Orden dentro del Imperio, y también hacia el mundo europeo. Se sabe menos de la manera en que estos conocimientos se difundieron entre otras poblaciones indígenas y sectores subalternos de la América española, como ocurrió por ejemplo con la influencia del Florilegio Medicinal de Juan de Esteyneffer entre los sectores populares de Nueva España. Dentro de esta misma tradición podemos situar la oferta de ayuda médica realizada en 1791 por parte de las autoridades coloniales chilenas a los mapuche durante un brote epidémico de viruelas que afectó sucesivamente a las poblaciones de ambos lados de la frontera. En esa ocasión, los españoles aconsejaron a los nativos el uso de yerbas medicinales de cuyo uso se habían apropiado durante el siglo XVII, cuando los misioneros jesuitas aprendieron su utilización de los mismos indígenas. El ofrecimiento muestra entonces la vuelta a casa, después de cien años de una vasta circulación que implicó también su incorporación por parte de los sectores populares hispano-criollos, de prácticas y saberes que tenían su origen en las poblaciones y el territorio de la Araucanía. El caso, reconstruido a partir de diversas fuentes documentales y bibliográficas, ilustra la circulación de los conocimientos médicos a través de las fronteras étnicas y sociales, movida por la búsqueda común de la eficacia curativa y del aprovechamiento de los recursos botánicos locales.

Abstract The quotes in the sacro-profane florilegia have so far been neglected as documents for the 9th-century readership of the Greek novels. This article uses the quotes as intertextual links to the originals and reconstructs the excerption: mapped back onto the novels, the quotes highlight the excerptors’ points of interest and the patterns that connect them. Excerption is thus fully understood as reading practice. The quotes were collected not only because they could provide wisdom when decontextualised, but also because they played a relevant role in the excerptors’ analysis and interpretation of the novels. The florilegia are therefore unique texts in revealing the experience of reading the novels in the 9thcentury.

Abstract This paper explores a little-known florilegium of 36 canons found in Reims, Bibliothèque municipale Ms. 15. The canons form one part of a dossier against simoniac prelates, assembled in 1078–1079 by reform-minded clergy in Reims to bring down the archbishop, Manasses I (ca. 1069–1080). Taken nearly whole-cloth from the Tuscan Collectio Barberiniana, the canons of Reims 15 shed light on the transmission of legal material from northern Italy to northern France, and offer precious insight into how this material was assembled for use. Moreover, substantial elements of the florilegium were incorporated into the eleventh-century legal collection known as Sinemuriensis. Using the canonical material of Reims 15, this paper offers a new hypothesis concerning the various recensions of Sinemuriensis and their dating, and concludes with an edition of the canons from the Reims florilegium.

Abstract:

The article presents a textual analysis and a publication of a little-known copy of the anonymous Old Russian text “Parables of Wives” (“Pritchi o zhenakh”), found in a handwritten Slavic Horologion with additional articles in the Russian State Library (Fond 209, No. 201). The manuscript is of Moldavian origin and dates back to the first quarter of the 16th century. It is established that literary sources of the entries that constitute the “Parables of Wives” are mainly didactic statements from the florilegia The Bee (Pchela, Melissa) and Menander. The discovered text is a special compiled redaction of the “Parables”. The author did not simply select individual entries from those florilegia but also changed the order in which the aphorisms appear compared to their position in The Bee and Menander. At the same time, he partly edited their content. Most likely, the Moldavian copyist had a corrupted copy of the “Parables of Wives” in front of him, which he could not copy correctly, thus preserving its erroneous readings in his copy

Abstract:

This issue of Florilegium is dedicated to its originator and longtime editor, Dr Douglas J. Wurtele, professor emeritus of Carleton University in Ottawa. The Canadian Society of Medievalists/Societe canadienne des medievistes takes great pleasure in this opportunity to mark the scholarly achievements and professional contributions to medieval studies of one of its best-known and most respected members. With the support of several enthusiastic colleagues, Dr Wurtele began Florilegium more than twenty years ago as an interdisciplinary journal for classical and medieval studies. For a long time, that journal was one of the few venues in which Canadian medievalists might communicate with one another. It is not surprising then that, given his dedication to fostering medieval studies in Canada, Dr Wurtele became one of the earliest active supporters of the new Canadian Society of Medievalists/Societe canadienne des medievistes when it was first organised in 1993. The association of Florilegium with the Society was proposed almost from the beginning, when Dr Wurtele made a very generous offer to the Society that would be of enormous benefit to both the journal and CSM/SCM. It was expected then that he would continue to edit Florilegium and that the Society would be able to rely on his wide experience in running a scholarly journal. His expertise had also been conspicuous during his very successful tenure as editor of English Studies in Canada for the Association of Canadian College and University Teachers of English (ACCUTE). Unfortunately, Dr Wurtele had to resign as editor because of ill health. Despite this setback, he worked as hard as ever to complete the final issue under his direction and turned over to our new editor, Dr Jane Toswell, a smoothly-functioning journal.

Abstract:

Jointly edited by Roger Blockley and Douglas Wurtele, the first volume of Florilegium appeared in 1979, with the subtitle “Carleton University Annual Papers in Classical Antiquity and the Middle Ages.” The fourteen papers in the volume included a piece on Trotula by Beryl Rowland (later the honorand of volume 6 of the journal, and later still an honorary consulting editor), a consideration by Connie Hieatt (now an honorary member of the Canadian Society of Medievalists) of Vincent of Beauvais as a source for the Old Norse Karlamagnús Saga, and a piece on the Distichs of Cato and medieval parody by Bruno Roy (later the first plenary speaker at the newly-formed Société canadienne des médiévistes, and the only plenary speaker to date to have served a return engagement for the CSM/SCM). George Rigg was on the Editorial Board, as he has been ever since. A few things, however, have changed. The editors encouraged submissions in English, French, or Latin; today's Florilegium, part of a less learned era, can only accept submissions in Canada’s two languages. The journal was described as “an annual devoted to the ancient and medieval cultures of Europe, North Africa, and the Near East” and in the preface the editors explicitly encourage “papers which take a cross-cultural or inter-disciplinary approach to history, literature, and other relevant areas of study, which explore the continuities between the ancient and the mediaeval world, and which try to develop new methodologies or adapt those developed by other disciplines.” The most recent issue of the journal open to general submissions has the more succinct “an annual publication devoted to studies of Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages.” Finally, the editors comment on the typing and layout of the journal, indicating their use of an IBM Selectric, which requires the use of unresolved righthand margins. Today the journal requires the use of Adobe FrameMaker, an array of fonts and special characters, and it rejoices in an idiosyncratic layout which is precisely half the size of an 8½" X 14" page. Like the journal’s first iteration, this layout, too, “may offend purists...moreover, it halves the cost of production, an important consideration in a period of stringency.” Also offending purists, but making it easier to recognise volumes during packaging, is the constantly-changing (but always not pastel) colour of the cover.

В данном исследовании рассматривается использование Иоанном Кесарийским Грамматиком флорилегиев - сборников цитат авторитетных христианских авторов. Мы можем говорить о двух флорилегиях: в «Апологии Халкидонского Собора» и в сочинении «Против афтартодокетов». Оба текста - христологической тематики, но касаются разных граней этой полемики. Мы анализируем только флорилегий, который находится в «Апологии», на предмет его терминологии и функциональности в тексте самого Иоанна Кесарийского. This study examines the use of florilegium, collections of quotations by authoritative Christian authors, by John of Caesarian the Grammarian. There are two such Grammarians in the text: «Apology to the Council of Chalcedon» and "Against the Aphtartodoketes". Both texts are Christological in subject, but they deal with different concepts of this polemic. We analyze only the florilegium, which is found in the «Apology» for its termilogy and functionality in the text of John of Caesarea himself.

Abstract:

Abstract An unruly object of seventeenth-century experimental science is the metal needle, an instrument that begins Robert Hooke’s Micrographia (1665) but also was the essential tool used in women’s embroidery work. This article follows traces of the needle through the historical record and florilegia – a genre that bridged botanical and artistic studies – to argue that needlework provided a way of seeing that facilitated the development of empiricism. Using evidence from the works of Isabella Parasole, Elizabeth Isham, and Maria Sibylla Merian, I show how the needle surfaces in scenes of scientific illustration, thereby resituating natural histories and the scientific process of ordering minute organisms.
