Abstract:
Learning outcomes The learning outcomes are as follows: what tasks are to be done by medical representatives in pharmaceutical industry? This study also highlights various competencies required to do effective selling in this industry; analyzes and discusses different unethical practices going on in the market; explains why ethical norms are necessary in sales context when sales targets are already achievable with unethical means; and develops and comments on strategies Flori Pharmaceutical can make to overcome on these unethical issues. What should be the response of Dahar to the email of Naveed khan? What course of action should be taken by Dahar in the deceitful reporting case of Mohsin Ali? Case overview/synopsis Flori is considered a leading and growing multinational organization in the highly competitive environment of Pakistan pharmaceutical industry with over 40 years of experience. The company aims to command a leading position in developing new health-care products as it offers a wide range of diabetic, cardiovascular, respiratory and vitamin products based on quality as a result of high research and examination. Recently, an email to Bilal Dahar on March 2017 from Flori’s star sales person Naveed Khan has forced management to take some strong decisions regarding ethical norms and values to be adopted by medical representatives of Flori pharmaceuticals. The email highlighted the issues related to sales pressure which are leading toward unethical sales practices. Dahar just not have to maintain Flori’s ethical code of conduct but he and his team also has to work hard to achieve more than 26% growth rate in sales revenue as compared to last year. Dahar knew that the highly competitive environment of pharmaceutical industry has led most of the stake holders to indulge in unethical behavior to achieve their individual targets. He knew that this is dangerous in long term for the multinational organizations such as Flori pharmaceuticals as if the similar behavior continues, the sales culture and values of the organization would be on stake. He also has to decide what decision to be taken against deceitful reporting issue of one of the top-performer territory managers, who was key person in helping Flori to close the sales year 2016 with the revenue of Rs. 6.4bn, a 26% growth over the last year. The case is rich enough to provide a platform regarding management of several ethical challenges in pharmaceutical selling and developing strategies based on them. Abstract:
The effect of a freshwater bacterium Exiguobacterium sp.013 was examined on the cultures of four freshwater Microcystis which can cause cyanobacterial blooms. Four freshwater Microcystis cells and the bacterium were inoculated simultaneously, in modified BG-11 culture media, and cultured for 24 days continuously. The specific growth rate and cell densities were employed and determined in treated cultures and in controls.Additionally, dynamic changes of bacterium were investigated during the whole cultures. The results showed that the specific growth rate and maximal cell density of M. aeruginosa, M. flos-aquae and M. wesenbergii in treated cultures were significantly enhanced than that of control cultures, and daily cell densities of four Microcystis in the treated cultures were also significantly higher compared with that of control cultures. The added bacterial strain always kept dominance among the bacterial flora during the culture period. These findings implied that bacteria Exiguobacterium sp. might play a positive promoting role in forming Microcystis blooms under the eutrophication condition.

Abstract:
Objective: In this study, it was aimed to determine whether the flora bacteria growing in blood cultures were infectious agents or only contaminants, for this purpose the hemogram parameters and other demographic characteristics of the patients were evaluated. Materials and Methods: We evaluated 11.579 blood culture results using the BacT/ALERT® microbial detection system. The skin flora bacteria was detected in the blood cultures during one year and the rates of infectious agents among these bacteria were investigated retrospectively. The blood culture results, which were accepted as true bacteremia and contamination were compared in terms of positive blood culture flask count and inflammation markers (white blood cell count, neutrophil ratio, lymphocyte ratio and C-reactive protein levels). Results: The total number of blood culture test was 11.579. Out of this number, 8205 (70.87%) was free of microbial growth and there was 3374 (29.13%) with microbial growth. 2609 (77.3%) of the positive cultures represented skin flora bacteria, 2510 (96.2%) of them were coagulase negative staphylococci. Only 50 (1.9%) of the flora bacteria were considered as infectious agents in terms of clinical and laboratory findings in addition to culture. A statistically significant correlation was found between true bacteremia and white blood cell (WBC) count and C-reactive protein (C-RP) levels (p <0.05). Conclusion: Peripheral blood collection instead of catheter and using special phlebotomy teams should be taken into consideration in order to reduce contamination rates precautions such as adequate skin preparation, preparation of blood culture bottles and using single needle instead of double needle. Abstract:
ObjectiveTo study the microbial etiology of tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA).MethodsWe recruited 11 women in Nairobi, Kenya who failed antibiotic therapy alone and required surgical drainage of a presumptive TOA. Pus from the nine abscesses and two pyosalpinges were collected and cultured for aerobic, facultative and anaerobic microorganisms.ResultsEleven women suspected of having a TOA were hospitalized and treated for a median of 6 days (range 3–14 days) prior to surgical drainage of the abscess. Nine (82%) specimens were culture positive. Aerobes were present in all nine specimens. Seven of the nine positive cultures (78%) were polymicrobial and five of the polymicrobial cultures contained both anaerobes and aerobes. Anaerobic Gram-negative bacilli (Prevotella sp., Porphyromonas sp. and Bacteroides sp., Escherichia coli) and Streptococcus sp. (S. viridansandS. agalactiae) were the most common microorganisms isolated.Neisseria gonorrhoeaeandChlamydia trachomatiswere not isolated by culture or detected by polymerase chain reaction.ConclusionsIn Kenya, persistent TOAs are associated with endogenous flora similar to that normally found in the gastrointestinal tract.

Abstract:
Objectives Aerobic oral bacteria only rarely colonize the cleft nasal floor in patients with patent oronasal fistula. There are no studies that have investigated whether anaerobic oral flora colonize this site and whether attempting to culture them is useful for assessing the patency of oronasal fistulae in the clinic. Design A prospective study of 13 patients with cleft with patent unilateral oronasal fistulae. Microbiological culture swabs were taken from the oral cavity and both nasal floors, with the unaffected side being used as a control. Following aerobic and anaerobic culture, bacterial isolates were identified and compared. Main Outcome Measure A significant growth of anaerobic oral bacteria from the cleft nasal floor when compared with the unaffected side. Results Aerobic oral flora was cultured from the oral cavity in all 13 patients. A light growth of aerobic oral flora was found in the cleft nasal floor in two patients, and anaerobic oral flora was cultured from the cleft nasal floor in the same two patients. No statistical correlation was found between growth of anaerobic flora and the cleft nasal floor (p = .48). Conclusions Like aerobic oral flora, anaerobic oral bacteria would appear to only rarely colonize the cleft nasal floor in patients with oronasal fistulae. This additional investigation does not appear to be helpful in the assessment of oronasal fistulae in the clinic.

Abstract:
Summary The aerobic bacterial flora of the genital tract was characterized in 59 bitches in an 18-month study. The bitches represented 4 breeds and were from 3 kennels. Collection of vaginal swab specimens for bacterial culturing was performed every month, except during estrus when specimens were collected every week (n = 826). The capsule of the swab containing transport media was broken before specimen collection to moisten the tip, which helped to reduce the number of negative cultures. All bitches whelped at least once during the study and, thus, had known reproductive functions. Pregnancy rates, Utter sizes, and pup mortality were within normal limits. Pasteurella multocida, β-hemolytic streptococci group G, and Escherichia coli were the most common bacteria isolated. Although these species generally were isolated from mixed cultures, pure cultures were obtained from 18% of the specimens. There was a tendency for the various breeds to differ in their vaginal bacterial flora. The flora also varied during the reproductive cycle. Pasteurella multocida was isolated significantly more often during proestrus, estrus, metestrus, and pregnancy, than during anestrus and the postpartum period, and β-hemolytic streptococci were isolated significantly more often during proestrus than during estrus, pregnancy, or the postpartum period. Staphylococcus intermedius was almost exclusively found after parturition. Culture results were negative for only 5.2% of specimens cultured. On the basis of our findings, bacterial culturing of vaginal swab specimens from bitches without signs of genital disease is of little value.

Abstract:
Context.— Blood culture contamination is a common problem faced by medical centers and leads to significant cost. A possible method to reduce contamination is to discard the initial aliquot of blood, which contains skin and bacteria. Objective.— To determine whether the rate of contaminant blood cultures could be reduced by changing the order of draw to divert the first 7 mL to a gold- or green-top tube. Design.— A preintervention and postintervention study was conducted. During the 18-month intervention phase (September 2015–February 2017), all nurses in the emergency department and inpatient floor phlebotomists collected blood cultures by drawing the first 7 mL of blood into a gold- or green-top tube followed by drawing blood for blood culture bottles. The 18 months immediately preceding the study period (February 2014–July 2015) were used for comparison. Results.— There was an overall statistically significant decrease in contamination rate from 2.46% in the prediversion protocol group to 1.70% in the postdiversion protocol group (P < .001). Emergency department drawn cultures and inpatient cultures showed significant decrease in contamination rates between the preprotocol and postprotocol groups, 2.92% versus 1.95% (P < .001) for emergency department, and 1.82% versus 1.31% (P = .03) for inpatient. We noted less month-to-month variation during the study period compared with the preintervention period. Conclusions.— By using this simple diversion method, we were able to improve blood culture contamination rates for our emergency department and inpatients while incurring no added cost to the procedure.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a reflection about the knowledge of the New Worlds fauna and flora, generated by the institutions linked to the Spanish Crown between the years of 1570 and 1620. For this, it was opted for the analysis of the official chronicles and documents issued by Consejo de Indias that demanded information about the American natural world. The configurations and the functions that took on the knowledge about animals and plants in the bureaucratic structures and in the discursive space of the official chronicles are analyzed elements during the four chapters that compound the thesis. In the first part, beyond the theoretical and historiographical discussions about the relationships among the empire, knowledge and science, were examined some of the documents and instructions sent by Consejo de Indias to different parts of the continent in the period before 1570. The second chapter was dedicated to the analysis of the reform made by Juan de Ovando in Consejo de Indias, mainly with regard to laws and demands linked to data gathering and knowledge building about the American continent and also were discussed aspects related to the creation of the cosmographer-chronicler major of Indies position. The third chapter is dedicated to the examination of the first cosmographer-chronicler major of Indies Juan Lopez de Velascos work. The last chapter is focused on the analysis of two Indies official chroniclers that acted during Felipe IIIs reign: Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas and Pedro de Valencia. With the analysis of this documentation, it is intended to emphasize the configuration of an epistemic culture within the official institutions, culture related to literate and scientific traditions of that period as well as to the desire to establish an idea of empire for the Hispanic monarchy.

This paper has as objective to analyze the aspects of handicraft production and its relation to the creation of Beija-Flor Indigenous Land and aspects of social organization. It will be presented in the contextualization of the Amazon, aspects of the transformation of the indigenous peoples way of life from contact with European settlers and new relationships developed in space, to become the territory structured by the values of non-indigenous. The European conquest caused the displacement of many indigenous people from their places of origin to settle elsewhere, forming communities, is destabilized and restructuring themselves, resulting in the absorption values of others. The paper discusses the transformation of Beija-Flor Indigenous Community in the Indian land, contemplating their interests and conflicts arising from it. The origin of the community is related to the production of handicrafts for the market, and to support this aspect, we dealt with the meaning of material culture related to the importance of the techniques in human and art of indigenous peoples. It was used the literature and field research through interviews with forms, obtaining as a result the identification of the type of crafts produced in the community, such as ornaments, weapons and games, musical instruments and ritual, twisted, and the social and economic aspects related to the production of handicrafts, ethnic groups that live there, profiles of individuals and crafts typical of every people, raw materials and obtaining the same place and meaning of the craft for each ethnicity.

This research deals with the processes which involve the performatic experience and flows between memory, resistance and creation within the crossing of cultures. It starts with the establishment of dialogues in the context of Guarani Indian villages from the capital of Sao Paulo that, despite the dynamic contact with the metropolis, still keep alive their language and traditional ritual practices. The axis of reflection goes to the perception of possible intersections and poetic contamination deflagrated in intercultural contact. Performance is understood here with emphasis on experience, as a relational field in the proposition of the meeting with the -other culturally different?. Ritual and Art, and their respective environments and processes, approximated by the perspective of liminal experience, proposed by Victor Turner, are put on the move on a rupture between the boundaries of different kinds of cultural performance. In light of Performance Studies and Anthropology of Performance is suggested an apprehension of interval between different cultures, as a potentially transformative in-between place, generating new meanings.

Ryan, John C. "Plants, people and place : cultural botany and the Southwest Australian flora." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2011. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/426.

Full text
Abstract:
The Southwest corner of Western Australia has a distinctive culture of flora. In particular, the region is an internationally lauded destination for wildflower tourism. Aesthetic values inform the Southwest’s contemporary culture of flora and its products: photographs of flowers, botanical illustrations, taxonomic schemata and visually based landscape writings. In dynamic combination with sight, however, multi-sensoriality enhances cultures of flora through sensation. Hence, this thesis argues that it is vital to consider how bodily experiences deepen the appreciation of floristic appearances. Through readings of cultural, literary and historical sources, I propose floraesthesis as an embodied aesthetics of plants. The ancient concept of aesthesis, the root of the modern term aesthetics, comprises sensations—induced by the many senses—as gestures of curiosity. Whereas floraesthesis theorises corporeal appreciation, a visual aesthetic tends to distance plants from human appreciators. The latter may posit plants hierarchically as objects of visual art or constructs of quantitative science. This project puts into practice a critical humanities-based model that I call cultural botany. Following a progression of readings from colonial to contemporary times, I trace a continuum from floral aesthetics to floraesthesis through the cultural botany context. Using an integrative Thoreauvian-Heideggerean theoretical framework, I describe floral aesthetics as constituted by culture and language. As Thoreau and Heidegger suggest, embodied appreciation is predicated on language. I then theorise floraesthesis through readings of written and spoken materials: historic and contemporary literatures; colonialera botanical documents; transcriptions of ethnographic interviews; and my poetic enquiries as interludes throughout the text. A qualitative methodology, which I term botanic field aesthetics, comprises poetic practice, ethnographic interviewing and field walking set within an extensive historical context and organised around three places: Lesueur National Park, Fitzgerald River National Park and Anstey-Keane Damplands.

Abstract:
Afrikaans has hybrid compounds that pair Khoekhoe and Dutch roots to denote indigenous flora and cultural items, e.g., ghwarrieboom ‘guarri tree’. Afrikaans hart(e)beeshuis ‘wattle and daub house’ falls within this compound type, even though it looks straightforwardly Dutch hart(e)bees(t) ‘species of African antelope’ + huis ‘house’. Lexicalization of hybrid harbeeshuis took place in the Cape Dutch Pidgin as a term for a shelter or dwelling with water-resistant roof, with a cognate of Nama xaribe ‘wipe away (water)’ as the first term of the compound. White pastoralists adopted this style of vernacular architecture along with the term for it, whence the creation of hart(e)beeshuis by folk etymology.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the ten bas-relief panels of the Gates of Paradise of the Florence Baptistery, Lorenzo Ghiberti depicted episodes from the Old Testament, narrated through a succession of scenes, in which the figurative language also fulfils a catechetical function. The master set the Istorie (Stories) of the main characters of the Bible against a background of landscapes depicting territories and architecture known to him, and sculpting in great detail the flora, fauna and human structures. With regard to the latter, in the fifth, sixth and tenth panels, the scenery consists of monumental architecture inspired by the Classical and Renaissance style, while in the second, third, fourth, seventh and eighth panels Ghiberti depicts dwellings and shelters linked to the local tradition. In a single artefact, the goldsmith-sculptor master offers an overview of the heterogeneous built landscape, providing a faithful description of a whole series of vernacular constructions which, due to their importance and diffusion in the area, are also frequently found in other contemporary artistic works. From this point of view, the panels can be considered an unprecedented source to allow the analysis of the salient features of those widespread traditional architectures in the early 15th century, which still characterise the rural landscape surrounding Florence.

Abstract:
In accordance with European Directive 2003/99/EC on the monitoring of bacteria that can pass from animals to humans and cause disease, Member States are obliged to ensure that procedures are in place to monitor and report on the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in such bacteria. The UK continued to be subject to EU rules during the transition period up to the end of December 2020. The requirements state that 300 retail chicken meats should be tested by culture for the bacterium Escherichia coli. E. coli bacteria are a normal part of the gut flora of mammals and as such can be useful “indicators” of AMR in gut bacteria. Whilst some strains of E. coli can cause disease, most strains of E. coli do not cause observable disease in healthy animals and humans. Addressing the public health threat posed by AMR is a national strategic priority for the UK, which has led to both a 20-year vision of AMR (Opens in a new window)and a 5-year (2019 to 2024) AMR National Action Plan (NAP)

Development of Sodium Alginate Encapsulation of Diatom Concentrates as a Nutrient Delivery System to Enhance Growth and Survival of Post-Larvae Abalone. United States Department of Agriculture, September 2001. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2001.7586480.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
The major bottlenecks in rearing the highly priced gastropod abalone (Haliotis spp.) are the slow growth rate and the high mortality during the first 8 to 12 weeks following metamorphosis and settling. The most likely reason flor these problems is related to nutritional deficiencies in the diatom diet on which the post larvae (PL) feed almost exclusively in captivity. Higher survival and improved growth rate will reduce the considerable expense of hatchery-nursery resisdence time and thereflore the production costs. BARD supported our research for one year only and the support was given to us in order to prove that "(1) Abalone PL feed on encapsulated diatoms, and (2) heterotrophic diatoms can be mass produced." In the course of this year we have developed a novel nutrient delivery system specifically designed to enhance growth and survival of post-larval abalone. This approach is based on the sodium-alginate encapsulation of heterotrophically grown diatoms or diatom extracts, including appetite-stimulating factors. Diatom species that attract the PL and promote the highest growth and survival have been identified. These were also tested by incorporating them (either intact cells or as cell extracts) into a sodium-alginate matrix while comparing the growth to that achieved when using diatoms (singel sp. or as a mixture). A number of potential chemoattractants to act as appetite-stimulating factors for abalone PL have been tested. Preliminary results show that the incorporation of the amino acid methionine at a level of 10-3M to the sodim alginate matrix leads to a marked enhancement of growth. The results ol these studies provided basic knowledge on the growth of abalone and showed that it is possible to obtain, on a regular basis, survival rates exceeding 10% for this stage. Prior to this study the survival rates ranged between 2-4%, less than half of the values achieved today. Several diatom species originated from the National Center for Mariculture (Nitzchia laevis, Navicula lenzi, Amphora T3, and Navicula tennerima) and Cylindrotheca fusiformis (2083, 2084, 2085, 2086 and 2087 UTEX strains, Austin TX) were tested for heterotrophic growth. Axenic colonies were initially obtained and following intensive selection cycles and mutagenesis treatments, Amphora T3, Navicula tennerima and Cylindrotheca fusiformis (2083 UTEX strain) were capable of growing under heterotrophic conditions and to sustain highly enriched mediums. A highly efficient selection procedure as well as cost effective matrix of media components were developed and optimized. Glucose was identified as the best carbon source for all diatom strains. Doubling times ranging from 20-40 h were observed, and stable heterotroph cultures at a densities range of 103-104 were achieved. Although current growth rates are not yet sufficient for full economical fermentation, we estimate that further selections and mutagenesis treatments cycles should result in much faster growing colonies suitable for a fermentor scale-up. As rightfully pointed out by one of the reviewers, "There would be no point in assessing the optimum levels of dietary inclusions into micro-capsules, if the post-larvae cannot be induced to consume those capsules in the first place." We believe that the results of the first year of research provide a foundationfor the continuation of this research following the objectives put forth in the original proposal. Future work should concentrate on the optimization of incorporation of intact cells and cell extracts of the developed heterotrophic strains in the alginate matrix, as well as improving this delivery system by including liposomes and chemoattractants to ensure food consumption and enhanced growth.
