Abstract:
Anaesthesia education is uniquely placed to allow safe and supervised workplace teaching and training delivered in a personalized, contextual one-to-one basis. Trainers and trainees need to manage their expectations in training, enabling flexible and opportunistic capturing of these learning episodes, as well as structured learning. Structured planning of individualized training is imperative to facilitate learning in trainees with different learning styles. Role modelling of trainers in the workplace is an essential component of both clinical and professional teaching. Critical reflection and high-quality trainee feedback enhances this experiential learning. A robust framework of education governance is fundamental in maintaining a high standard of training; this includes trainer accreditation, recognizing the importance of trainer development, and an appropriate infrastructure to support training and education in the clinical workplace.

Abstract:
Coleridge’s prose represents the trace and track of his mind in action. It records the intricate processes, the inner workshop of thinking and feeling: fertile, at times rapid, at times digressing, working not so much by direct lines as by sideways and encompassing motions, though always towards a goal, yet willing to put aside that goal, at least temporarily, for a richer one discovered on the way. In notebooks, letters, essays, criticism, journalism, religious and spiritual writing, in arguments against slavery and child labour—always displaying a wealth and love of words in their richness and distinctions (and coining many of his own that have entered the language)—his prose registers no formulated catechism of thought. He writes in multiple styles. His compositions embody a flexible method subsuming all his powers. Coleridge’s prose is an acquired taste but one worth acquiring.

Hyers, Lauri. Diary Methods. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190256692.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book provides an overview of diary research history, design, data collection, data analysis, report writing, evaluation, and ethics. In use for about 100 years now in the social sciences, diary research methods are distinct in the qualitative canon for their mode of data collection. Diary research methods are as flexible as other qualitative methods and can be adapted to suit a variety of epistemological assumptions and research questions, types of diarists and data formats, and styles of analysis. Although diary research can seem daunting, many qualitative researchers have had great success in working with diaries as their primary data source. In this volume, the diary will first be explored historically, from its emergence as a popular cultural phenomenon to its eventual use by social science researchers. Attention will then turn to the use of archival and solicited diaries in qualitative research designs. Next, the basics of designing, analyzing, and writing qualitative diary studies will be reviewed. The volume concludes with a discussion of the strengths, weaknesses, and ethical considerations of qualitative diary research.

Full text
Abstract:
Polymorphism is a programming style that is supported by C++ and other languages which allows objects of different classes to be treated in a common way and permits high level abstractions for C++ functions. With proper use, polymorphism can become the basis of robust, flexible code that anticipates future extensions without requiring modification to an existing code base. It underpins a programming style called object-oriented programming, which can be used to manage the complexity of a computing project, and which must be fully understood to function in a modern programming environment. The nuts-and-bolts of polymorphism and object-oriented programming, such as inheritance and virtual functions, are discussed and illustrated with examples from numerical programming.

Abstract:
George Eliot’s style developed during her early years as an exceptionally cultured journalist, translator, and editor, building a relation with her readers that rested on the authority of her wide-ranging scholarly and scientific references. But she also cautioned her readers about the limits of learning, and the need to locate knowledge in the context of sympathy. When she turned to fiction with the publication of Scenes of Clerical Life in 1857, she continued to build on these principles. An analysis of Middlemarch demonstrates that the flexible style of her mature writing continues to rest on a dazzling breadth of knowledge, coupled with an acknowledgement of the authority of feeling, and the moral responsibilities that are inseparable from our shared humanity.

Mack, Peter. Rhetorical Training in the Elizabethan Grammar School. Edited by Malcolm Smuts. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199660841.013.12.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter considers in detail the aspects of rhetoric taught in Elizabethan grammar schools. Pupils were shown the use of rhetorical ideas in practice when teachers pointed out rhetorical features in set texts from Latin literature. While the texts studied in grammar school— Erasmus’De conscribendis epistolisandDe copia, Aphthonius’ Progymnasmata—did not provide a comprehensive account of the whole of rhetorical theory, they gave a great deal of practical help on issues of style, amplification and decorum, on ways of approaching an audience, and on components of larger texts such as narratives, descriptions, comparisons, maxims and examples. They provided some help with argument and a flexible approach to disposition.

Preston, Katherine K. English-Language Opera at the End of the Century. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199371655.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter addresses operatic activity in the 1890s—in particular, an insatiable public appetite for comic opera and operetta that eventually eclipsed interest in the translated continental repertory. After close inspection of representative English grand opera and light opera companies, the author concludes with a discussion of two ensembles that enjoyed extraordinary success in the late 1890s: the Bostonians (formerly the Boston Ideals) and the Castle Square Opera Company. In the face of changing American tastes at the turn of the century, the old-fashioned Bostonians eventually failed while the more up-to-date Castle Square troupe succeeded. The latter company’s director Henry Savage had a foot firmly planted in each century. His willingness to adopt modern techniques and respond to contemporary audience demands illustrates the continued appeal of both English-language opera (in the late-nineteenth century) and the more flexible, colloquial, and indelibly American style of musical comedy that emerged (in the early twentieth).

Liu, Andrew B. Tea War. Yale University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.12987/yale/9780300243734.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Tea remains the world's most popular commercial drink today, and at the turn of the twentieth century, it represented the largest export industry of both China and colonial India. In analyzing the global competition between Chinese and Indian tea, this book challenges past economic histories premised on the technical “divergence” between the West and the Rest, arguing instead that seemingly traditional technologies and practices were central to modern capital accumulation across Asia. The book shows how competitive pressures compelled Chinese merchants to adopt abstract, industrial conceptions of time, while colonial planters in India pushed for labor indenture laws to support factory-style tea plantations. Further, characterizations of China and India as premodern backwaters, it explains, were themselves the historical result of new notions of political economy adopted by Chinese and Indian nationalists, who discovered that these abstract ideas corresponded to concrete social changes in their local surroundings. Together, these stories point toward a more flexible and globally oriented conceptualization of the history of capitalism in China and India.

Abstract:
The disparate approaches to English pastoralism considered within this book—whether evoking scenes and characters from classical poetry, depicting an imaginary past or a hoped-for future, responding to the landscape, commenting on contemporary social and political challenges, providing spiritual sustenance for the living, or eulogizing the dead—firmly banish outdated clichés of it as little more than folky-wolky roister-doistering. Instead, pastoralism stands revealed as a subtle and flexible expressive mode capable of transcending the circumstances and surroundings of its creation, conveyed by a distinctive and highly adaptable array of stylistic traits. But in the wake of Finzi’s death in 1956 and Vaughan Williams’s only two years later, English pastoral music fell into relative obscurity. Composers who had written pastoral works in previous decades (including Howells, Ireland, and Bliss) had either largely turned away from the idiom or limited it to certain smaller-scale or niche contexts (such as church music, in Howells’s case). Meanwhile, the rise of both a prominent British avant-garde musical movement during the later 1950s and an extraordinarily vital pop music scene in the following decade made it difficult for the older, less demonstrative pastoral style to hold the public or critical imagination....
