Abstract:
Poor self-esteem among adolescents poses a great challenge, which parenting styles can influence. This study examined gender differences in perceived parenting styles and self-esteem of adolescents and examined the relationship between perceived parenting styles and adolescents’ self-esteem among in-school adolescents in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. This study utilized a multistage sampling technique. Responses were elicited from 504 consenting pupils using the parental authority questionnaire and a self-esteem questionnaire adjusted to the Rosenberg scale. Self-esteem was scored on a (12–30) scale; scores ≥ 26 indicate high self-esteem, and scores ≤ 25 indicate low self-esteem. The mean age and self-esteem score were 14.9±1.5 years and 24.0±3.3. About one third of respondents reported parenting styles as authoritative or flexible (fathers: 36.3%, mothers: 38.9%). Pearson correlation coefficient test showed a positive significant relationship between flexible parenting style and adolescent self-esteem for fathers ( r = 0.141, p = .001) and mothers ( r = 0.137, p = .001). Research findings reveal significant association between perceived parenting styles and adolescents’ self-esteem.

Abstract:
This article reports on a study of the preferences in learning styles for 214 students, aged 10–17, with visual impairments and their sighted peers. Students with or without visual impairments did not differ in their frequency for preferences for either an extroverted or introverted style. However, in contrast to their sighted peers, students with visual impairments more frequently preferred practical, thinking, or organized styles. Also in contrast with their sighted peers, boys with visual impairments tended to prefer extroverted styles and girls with visual impairments tended to prefer introverted styles. Visually impaired students aged 10–15 generally displayed a preference for thinking styles, and those older than 15 preferred feeling styles. Those aged 10–12 generally preferred more organized styles, whereas those older than 15 generally preferred more flexible styles.

Abstract:
Age, gender, and cross-national differences of children ages 8- through 16-years-old in India ( n = 400) and the United States of America ( n = 3,200) are examined on four bipolar temperament styles: extroversion-introversion, practical-imaginative, thinking-feeling, and organized-flexible styles. In general, Indian children prefer extroverted to introverted, practical to imaginative, feeling to thinking, and organized to flexible styles. Gender differences among Indian children are significant only on extroversion-introversion. Age differences are found on thinking-feeling and organized-flexible styles. Cross-national differences are found on only one of the four bipolar styles: practical-imaginative. In contrast to children in the United States of America, those in India are more likely to prefer practical styles. Sample limitations (e.g. non-representativeness and small size relative to the population) limit the generalization of these data.

Abstract:
SOA and REST are the two main architectural styles used for distributed applications. Current SOA implementations use Web Services, which have a flexible service interface but lack resource structure. Current REST implementations use HTTP, with good structural support (through URIs) but fixed service interface, leading to a significant mismatch in modeling some application artifacts. In addition, current data description languages support distributed interoperability by schema sharing (XML) or predefined media types (JSON). This paper makes two main proposals: an architectural style, Structural Service, capable of combining resource structure with flexible services, and a distributed interoperability mechanism, based on structural compliance and conformance, which supports partial interoperability and reduces coupling between interacting services while ensuring that the interoperability requirements of the application are satisfied. Since current technologies do not readily support these proposals, the author developed a language and its execution platform that supports structural services and compliance and conformance.

Abstract:
Abstract Caring for a person living with dementia (PLWD) can take a physical and emotional toll, but understudied is the process of how family caregivers actually provide care (caregiver management styles). We interviewed 100 primary family caregivers regarding management of a recently experienced care challenge and values held which might impact care management decisions. Watkins’ (2017) rigorous and accelerated data reduction (RADaR) technique was used to analyze qualitative data through open/focused coding, determining commonalities of style components/themes, and finally defining caregiving management styles. Style for a given caregiver emerged from enacted care strategies, caregiver’s internal stances which informed their use of strategies, and broader engagement (or lack thereof) with the PLWD’s lived experience/reality. Styles emerging from the analysis will be described including the direct, rigid “Just do it” style, and the flexible, empathic “Teamwork” style. Individualizing caregiver interventions and supports based on caregiver management style is an important future direction.

Abstract:
Purpose: This study aimed to explore the associations between learning styles and high academic achievement and to ascertain whether the factors associated with high academic achievement differed between preclinical and clinical students. Methods: A survey was conducted among undergraduate medical students in Chiang Mai University, Thailand. The Index of Learning Styles questionnaire was used to assess each student’s learning style across four domains. High academic achievement was defined as a grade point average of at least 3.0. Results: Of the 1,248 eligible medical students, 1,014 (81.3%) participated. Learning styles differed between the preclinical and clinical students in the active/reflective domain. A sequential learning style was associated with high academic achievement in both preclinical and clinical students. A reflective learning style was only associated with high academic achievement among preclinical students. Conclusion: The association between learning styles and academic achievement may have differed between preclinical and clinical students due to different learning content and teaching methods. Students should be encouraged to be flexible in their own learning styles in order to engage successfully with various and changing teaching methods across the curriculum. Instructors should be also encouraged to provide a variety of teaching materials and resources to suit different learning styles.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the learning preferences and learning strategies of apprentices, and the contexts within which they learn in their workplaces. Since the end of the 1980s Australian vocational education and training (VET) structures and processes have undergone radical change in attempts to develop skills in the workforce that will ensure enterprise, national, and international competitiveness. A major strategy in the national reforms has been the encouragement of flexible delivery as a means through which workplace-based learning can be accessed by a larger number of workers in ways that are cost-efficient, and that reduce the amount of time that workers spend away from their jobs. Although flexible delivery has been championed by governments and industry alike, there has been little attempt to identify the preparedness of either learners or their workplaces for the demands of flexible learning. The thesis examines the economic context for these changes to VET, and also examines the literature available on workplace learning. Additionally, the thesis examines the conceptualisations of flexible delivery that are available in the literature, pointing to the possibility that the wide range of meanings associated with the term ‘flexible delivery’ may result in quite different practices and expectations. The thesis also examines the literature on independent learning and self-directed learning, and explores the concept of ‘client-focused’ flexible delivery. The study of learner preferences uses data collected from apprentices over a period of some years, in the four occupational areas commanding the highest number of apprentices in Australia. These occupational areas are Metals and Machining, Building, Electrical, and Hairdressing. These data on learning preferences are collected using the commercially available Canfield Learning Styles Inventory (CLSI). The data from the sample of 389 apprentices are analysed statistically through analyses of variance, and indicate that variables such as age, gender, and occupational area are related to learning preferences. Apprentices are shown by this analysis to prefer structured programs of instruction that are instructor-led, and to not have a high preference for independent learning or the development of their own learning goals. Additionally, they are shown to have very low preferences for learning through reading, preferring instead to learn through direct hands-on experience. While these characteristics are largely common among the four occupational groups, the Hairdressing apprentices are shown to have a slightly higher preference for independent learning and goal setting. Females are shown to have a higher preference than males for learning qualitative material through reading. Interestingly, the younger apprentices are shown to have a higher preference than the older ones for self-directed learning. Some possibilities for that finding are discussed. The research also shows that the learning preferences displayed by different groups of apprentices in any one program are much the same over time, providing some confidence that data generated from one group of apprentices can be used to make instructional decisions for future groups in the same program. The data are also factor analysed to indicate three major factors underlying apprentice learning preferences. The first factor indicates a Verbal–Non-verbal preference factor, with apprentices clearly preferring to learn through non-verbal means. A second factor is described as Structure–Content, with apprentices showing a preference for learning from structured programs in a structured environment. A third factor, Self-directed–Social preference, indicates apprentices preferring to learn through socially mediated presentations and contexts rather than through more independent forms of learning. Qualitative data are also generated through interviewing eight apprentices, and focusing on the learning strategies they employ while constructing knowledge in the workplace. That component of the research uses a modification of the Marland, Patching and Putt (1992a, 1992b) stimulated recall technique, and a set of learning strategies derived from the work of O’Malley and Chamot (1990) and Billett (1996a). The eight apprentices are drawn from the Metals and Machining, Electrical, and Hairdressing trades. The findings indicate that the learning strategies most often used by apprentices in the workplace are those associated with the construction of knowledge that is structured and provided by the instructor or learning program, and those that include social mediation of learning. Additionally, the strategies associated with demonstration and hands-on practice are most favoured. The qualitative data are confirmatory of the quantitative data. The research also indicates, through the apprentice interviews, that support for apprentice’s learning in their workplace is typically unplanned and haphazard. Their experience was sometimes characterised by a reluctance on the part of the workplace to acknowledge learning needs such as trialling and practice of new knowledge, or pro-actively seeking understanding from other more skilled workers. The learning preferences and learning strategies findings for apprentices, coupled with the findings of typically poor or unplanned support in the workplace, indicate that effective flexible delivery of training to apprentices in the workplace provides a number of challenges. These challenges, it is argued, demand strategies to be developed and implemented to prepare both learners and workplaces for effective engagement with flexible delivery. Using as a theoretical framework Kember’s (1995) two-dimensional model of open learning for adults, the thesis integrates the findings into a proposed two-dimensional model of learner and workplace preparedness for flexible delivery. The model provides for a Learner Development Space, a Workplace Development Space, and a Strategy Space. Within the Learner Development Space, focuses for the development of learner preparedness are identified in terms of self-directed learning, skills developments, and effective participation in a community of practice. Focuses for workplace development identified in the Workplace Development Space are those associated with development of training policies, training structures, and trainer skills and abilities. The Strategy Space then provides detail of seventy-nine specific strategies developed to enhance learner and workplace preparedness within each of the focuses identified.

Abstract:
This study attempted to combine the benefits of multimedia learning, adaptive interfaces, and learning style theory by constructing a novel e-learning environment. The environment was designed to accommodate individual learning styles while students progressed through a computer programming course. Despite the benefits of individualised instruction and a growing worldwide e-learning market, there is a paucity of guidance on how to effectively accommodate learning styles in an online environment. Several existing learning-style adaptive environments base their behaviour on an initial assessment of the learner's profile, which is then assumed to remain stable. Consequently, these environments rarely offer the learner choices between different versions of content. However, these choices could cater for flexible learning styles, promote cognitive flexibility, and increase learner control. The first research question underlying the project asked how learning styles could be accommodated in an adaptive e-learning environment. The second question asked whether a dynamically adaptive environment that provides the learner with a choice of media experiences is more beneficial than a statically adapted environment. To answer these questions, an adaptive e-learning environment named iWeaver was created and experimentally evaluated. iWeaver was based on an introductory course in Java programming and offered learning content as style-specific media experiences, assisted by additional learning tools. These experiences and tools were based on the perceptual and information processing dimension of an adapted version of the Dunn and Dunn learning styles model. An experimental evaluation of iWeaver was conducted with 63 multimedia students. The analysis investigated the effect of having a choice of multiple media experiences (compared to having just one static media experience) on learning gain, enjoyment, perceived progress, and motivation. In addition to these quantitative measurements, learners provided qualitative feedback at the end of each lesson. Data from 27 participants were sufficiently complete to be analysed. For the data analysis, participants were divided into two groups of high and low interest in programming and Java, then into two groups of high and low experience with computers and the Internet. Both group comparisons revealed statistically significant differences for the effect of choice. Having a choice of media experiences proved beneficial for learners with low experience but detrimental for learners with high experience or interest. These findings suggest that the effect of choice appears to be strongly influenced by the learner's background. It is hypothesised that encouraging a more active learner role in educational systems would expand the positive influence of choice to a wider range of learners. The study has contributed some weight to the argument that for certain groups of learners, it is more beneficial to view learning style as a flexible, rather than a stable construct. As a practical implication, it seems advisable to collect data on prior experience, interest, and the initial learning style distribution of the target audience before developing environments comparable to iWeaver. Abstract:
This study is based on an assignment from Trafikverket with the intention of improving the competence development within the organization. Basic education for operational services builds currently based on traditional theories of learning. The starting point for our study is that more research is required on how organizations can work to integrate flexible learning in skills development. The aim of this study is to describe how a government agency can work to integrate flexible learning in basic education for operational service. The theoretical part presents theories about flexible learning, learning environments, skills development, various education methods such as e-learning and flipped classroom, effects of education, how adults learn and theories about learning styles. The method is based on a qualitative method in the form of a case study. Semi-structured interviews have been conducted with six respondents from the Traffic Management Center in Gävle, including four trainers and two instructors. The result indicates that respondents generally are satisfied with the basic education for operational service, but the design lacks scope for flexible learning. We have identified factors that were considered to promote learning, such as the importance of the group and the internship. The conclusions taken based on analysis of the result are that Trafikverket should review some areas in the development of basic education for operational service and in the implementation of flexible learning. Trafikverket should create conditions for the tacit knowledge to be communicated in virtual learning environments, they should identify strengths and weaknesses with today's IT-based forms of education and consider the results of further development of basic education. Furthermore, Trafikverket should increase the use of simulators as part of achieving flexible learning and finally they should take advantage of the factors that employees appreciate in the education and implement them in IT-based education to achieve effective e-learning.

Abstract:
Creating a fitness function for music is largely subjective and dependent on a programmer's personal tastes or goals. Previous attempts to create musical fitness functions for use in genetic algorithms lack scope or are prejudiced to a certain genre of music. They also suffer the limitation of producing music only in the strict style determined by the programmer. We show in this paper that musical feature extractors that avoid the challenges of qualitative judgment enable creation of a multi-objective function for direct music production. Multi-objective fitness functions enable creation of music with varying identifiable styles. With this system we produced three distinct groups of music which computationally cluster into distinct styles as described by the set of feature extractors. We also show that knowledgeable individuals make similar clusters while a random sample of people make some similar and some different clusterings.

Abstract:
Anaesthesia education is uniquely placed to allow safe and supervised workplace teaching and training delivered in a personalized, contextual one-to-one basis. Trainers and trainees need to manage their expectations in training, enabling flexible and opportunistic capturing of these learning episodes, as well as structured learning. Structured planning of individualized training is imperative to facilitate learning in trainees with different learning styles. Role modelling of trainers in the workplace is an essential component of both clinical and professional teaching. Critical reflection and high-quality trainee feedback enhances this experiential learning. A robust framework of education governance is fundamental in maintaining a high standard of training; this includes trainer accreditation, recognizing the importance of trainer development, and an appropriate infrastructure to support training and education in the clinical workplace.

Abstract:
AbstractDifferent contemporary developments are challenging the notion of a rather exclusive and lasting belonging of individual researchers to the one disciplinary community into which they had been socialised, to which they subsequently contribute, and which they reproduce. In turn, the very meaning of community is challenged when there is a perpetual exchange of community members. This chapter deals with how researchers with diverse and dynamic relations to different collectives develop a self-understanding of what it means to be a good researcher, i.e. what the normative ideals are that they should strive for. It is empirically analysed how researchers who engage in transdisciplinary research occasionally or regularly narrate, adopt, translate, resist, and combine the different imaginations of being a good researcher that they encounter. The sensitizing concept of ‘choreography’ is proposed to analyse the identity work done under conditions of multiple and flexible belongings that is held together by a certain style, rhythm, and pattern. In this sense, a specific way of moving constitutes an identity in the first place by aligning otherwise separate belongings.

Abstract:
The Web started as a means to navigate in hypermedia documents but has evolved to a pervasive Web of Services, raising distribution and interoperability problems. Web Services appeared as a solution but have grown to become a complex technology, leading many web application providers to adopt a much simpler architectural style, REST. Each style has advantages and disadvantages. As always, the trick is to learn from both sides and to use a flexible technology that can adapt and support both styles. This chapter establishes a model, based on resources, services, and processes, and discusses the various possible combinations, putting the current architectural styles into perspective. Based on this, this chapter proposes one single language to support several levels that are currently implemented in separate technologies: data (including schema, usually described in XML or JSON), interface (WSDL for Web Services and HTTP verbs for Restful applications), and behavior (usually done in BPEL or in a general programming language).

Abstract:
This second part of the book takes the study of Emmanuel Levinas and film further into uncharted waters, by looking at Levinasian ethics in relation to films directed by Barbet Schroeder. Schroeder has made films in many different countries – such as France, Uganda, the United States, Colombia and Japan – on several different topics, and whereas the Dardennes have a recognisable style that they vary slightly from film to film, there is no such thing as an easily identifiable ‘Schroeder style’. This chapter reads this as a highly Levinasian dimension to Schroeder’s work: it argues that Schroeder’s lack of a consistent filmmaking identity initiates a highly flexible approach to his subject matter, his shifting styles responding open-mindedly and generously to the demands of different Others, and that his films therefore can be said to perform a Levinasian ethics through their different uses of film style. This introductory section sets up the discussions to follow on four Schroeder films: Maîtresse (1975), Reversal of Fortune (1990), Terror’s Advocate (2007) and Our Lady of the Assassins (2000).

Abstract:
One current direction in AI research is to focus on combining different reasoning styles such as deduction, induction, abduction, analogical reasoning, non-monotonic reasoning, vague and uncertain reasoning. The philosopher Imre Lakatos produced one such theory of how people with different reasoning styles collaborate to develop mathematical ideas. Lakatos argued that mathematics is a quasi-empirical, flexible, fallible, human endeavour, involving negotiations, mistakes, vague concept definitions and disagreements, and he outlined a heuristic approach towards the subject. In this chapter we apply these heuristics to the AI domains of evolving requirement specifications, planning and constraint satisfaction problems. In drawing analogies between Lakatos’s theory and these three domains we identify areas of work which correspond to each heuristic, and suggest extensions and further ways in which Lakatos’s philosophy can inform AI problem solving. Thus, we show how we might begin to produce a philosophically-inspired AI theory of combined reasoning.

Abstract:
In this chapter, an analysis of the electronic decision-making system, which is thought to benefit from the heavy bureaucratic system and which does not take into account the expectations of the citizen in the public administration system, will be used to make a more flexible structure. The focus of this chapter is on the need to design the decision-making mechanisms of the state according to the expectations of the citizen. For this purpose, requests and complaints from the citizens through the electronic environment should be taken into consideration in the decision-making process. In fact, this situation is reflected in the application of electronic participation management model. The application of this management model in the public administration system is the citizen participation complaint and demand system, which is carried out under the name of electronic government. The examination of this system, which is an example of the application of participatory democracy, is important for the reflection of democratic values on the administration system.

Abstract:
Implantable devices in direct contact with flowing blood are currently being used to treat many medical conditions; however, thromboembolism, blood damage and the attendant risk for ischemic stroke remains a major impediment. Specifically, vascular access methods, performed by the insertion of cannulae into vessels, may give rise to non-physiological pressure variations and shear stresses. To date, the hydrodynamic behavior of cannulae has been evaluated by comparing their pressure loss-flow rate relationships, as obtained from in vitro experiments. Numerical studies have evaluated cannulae as rigid wall vessels with steady flow conditions [1]. Various catheter tip styles have been compared [2], and the fluid dynamics of arterial cannulae inserted in the aortic arch have been investigated [3]. Evaluation of shear stresses within a flexible wall cannula under pulsatile blood flow conditions is discussed herein. We anticipate that considerations for pulsating blood flow and flexible device walls will indicate that anticoagulation requirements can be minimized and device related complications can be decreased, thus increasing patient survival rates.

Abstract:
Spiral Wound gaskets have been successfully used in ASME B16.5 pipe flanges. However, in the last few years, to increase the reliability and safety, there has been a trend to replace them by graphite faced serrated metal gaskets. These are assumed to be better in terms of relaxation and installation. This paper shows a comparison between these two gasket styles. Relaxation and leak tests were performed using standard studs and flanges to simulate actual field conditions.

Abstract:
Text style transfer pursues altering the style of a sentence while remaining its main content unchanged. Due to the lack of parallel corpora, most recent work focuses on unsupervised methods and has achieved noticeable progress. Nonetheless, the intractability of completely disentangling content from style for text leads to a contradiction of content preservation and style transfer accuracy. To address this problem, we propose a style instance supported method, StyIns. Instead of representing styles with embeddings or latent variables learned from single sentences, our model leverages the generative flow technique to extract underlying stylistic properties from multiple instances of each style, which form a more discriminative and expressive latent style space. By combining such a space with the attention-based structure, our model can better maintain the content and simultaneously achieve high transfer accuracy. Furthermore, the proposed method can be flexibly extended to semi-supervised learning so as to utilize available limited paired data. Experiments on three transfer tasks, sentiment modification, formality rephrasing, and poeticness generation, show that StyIns obtains a better balance between content and style, outperforming several recent baselines.

Abstract:
Abstract A testing chamber was designed to evaluate the performance of microclimate cooling systems, which are used to extend human performance duration in heat stress environments by flowing fluids through flexible tubing in a conforming garment, carrying excess heat away from the wearer. The flexible experimental system accommodates changes in materials and garment design. In this study, one side of a chamber was able to output heat at a rate equivalent with that of human; a second, opposed chamber controls ambient conditions experienced by the garment. Temperature changes in both the interior and exterior sides of the chamber were measured. The cooling garment was tested at different conditions, transient and non-transient styles, with and without flowing fluid, and at various wattage densities (367.3 W/m2 and 576.8 W/m2). The designed testing chamber was validated for proper functionality. It was observed that, having a flowing fluid through the garment was more effective at higher body temperatures (∼45 °C) carrying away the excess amount of heat from the body.
