Abstract:
The invention of DNA origami has expanded the geometric complexity and functionality of DNA nanostructures. Using DNA origami technology, we develop a flexible multi-joint ring motif as a novel self-assembling module. The motif can connect with each other through self-complementary sequences on its segments. The flexible joints can be fixed in a straightened position as desired, thereby allowing the motif to take various shapes. We can adjust the number of flexible joints and the number of connectable segments, thereby enabling programmable self-assembly of the motif. We successfully produced the motif and evaluated several self-assembly patterns. The proposed multi-joint ring motif can provide a novel method for creating functional molecular devices.

Abstract:
In this paper, a micro electromagnetic harmonic drive system is proposed. Considering Van der Waals force, dynamics equation of the flexible ring for the micro drive system is deduced and resolved. Using the equations, the effects of the molecule force on the natural frequencies and vibration modes of the drive system are investigated. Results show that considering molecule force, natural frequencies of the flexible ring are reduced and its vibration modes are changed. For lower order modes, smaller clearance between the flexible ring and stator, smaller thickness of the flexible ring and larger radius of the flexible ring, the effects of the molecule force on the natural frequencies and vibration modes are more obvious.

Abstract:
L-shaped flexible ring gear is a new solution to the non-uniform load distribution of planetary transmission systems. At present, the research on L-shaped flexible ring gear is still focused on its meshing characteristics and dynamic load sharing performance, and its structural vibration characteristics and dynamic coupling vibration characteristics with the system are not involved. Considering that the structural flexibility of the L-shaped flexible ring gear is significantly higher than that of the traditional ring gear, the structural vibration will obviously affect the load sharing and dynamic load factor performance of the transmission system, as well as the safety and reliability of the mechanism. Due to its strong structural flexibility and structural particularity, the existing dynamic analysis model is difficult to meet the requirements of analysis and design. In this paper, the coupling vibration model of L-shaped flexible ring gear planetary transmission systems is established, and the structural vibration characteristics of L-shaped flexible ring gear and its influence on the dynamic performance of the systems are deeply analyzed. The model foundation and theoretical guidance are provided for the design of L-shaped flexible ring gear and the analysis of the dynamic characteristics of flexible ring gear systems.

Abstract:
AbstractAn improved version of the immersed boundary (IB) method for simulating an initially circular or elliptic flexible ring pinned at one point in a uniform flow has been developed. The boundary of the ring consists of a flexible filament with tension and bending stiffness. A penalty method derived from fluid compressibility was used to ensure the conservation of the internal volume of the flexible ring. At $\mathit{Re}= 100$, two different flapping modes were identified by varying the tension coefficient for a fixed bending stiffness, or by changing the bending coefficient for a fixed tension coefficient. The optimal tension and bending coefficients that minimize the drag force of the flexible ring were found. Visualization of the vorticity field showed that the two flapping modes correspond to different vortex shedding patterns. We observed the hysteresis property of the flexible ring, which exhibits bistable states over a range of flow velocities depending on the initial inclination angle, i.e. one is a stationary stable state and the other a self-sustained periodically flapping state. The Reynolds number range of the bistability region and the flapping amplitude were determined for various aspect ratios $a/ b$. For $a/ b= 0. 5$, the hysteresis region arises at the highest Reynolds number and the flapping amplitude in the self-sustained flapping state is minimized. A new bistability phenomenon was observed: for certain aspect ratios, two periodically flapping states coexist with different amplitudes in a particular Reynolds number range, instead of the presence of a stationary stable state and a periodically flapping state.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, a novel incremental ring rolling process used in production of rings with various cross sections is examined. A basic type of this process is investigated numerically, using commercial finite element programs
MSC Superform, MSC Marc. The user defined subroutines are also utilized for flexibility in modeling. The aim of modeling is to determine the material flow for geometrical analysis, strain/stress distribution for tool force analysis and residual stresses, in a cost effective way. The process has instabilities and requires large number of incremental stages to complete a full finite element simulation. The full models are reliable but costly hence the numerical studies are focused on reliable simplified models with lower computation time. Different approaches are developed: three-dimensional segment model, improved segment model, velocity coupling model. The results of these models are compared with experimentally verified full models. Numerical parameters such as mesh type, step size, convergence ratio are examined. After verification of the model different applications to of the process is developed and physical parameters affecting the process are discussed
such as the tool path .

Wei, Chongfeng. "A finite element based approach to characterising flexible ring tire (FTire) model for extended range of operating conditions." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2015. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/5825/.

Abstract:
In order to accurately predict vehicle dynamic properties when tires impact high obstacles or large bumps, appropriate tire models need to be developed and characterised. The Flexible Ring Tire (FTire) model is one of the models for predicting the transient dynamic responses when traversing obstacles. In this thesis, a combination of experimental tests and Finite Element (FE) modelling is used in deriving FTire models for different levels of tire/road interaction severity. A FE tire model is built to characterize tire properties including static properties, steady-state rolling properties and transient dynamic rolling properties. A 235/60 R18 tire is cut in order that the tire cross-section can be captured and the tire rubber and reinforcement components can be extracted. A detailed method for the determination of geometrical and material properties of tires has been developed for tire modelling. The 2D and 3D models for static and dynamic analysis are both developed using a commercial FE code ABAQUS. The parameters of FTire model are derived based on the experimental data and FE simulation data, and different FTire models are derived under different operation conditions. Multi-body dynamic analysis is carried out using these FTire models, and the transient dynamic responses using different FTire models are compared with each other. It is shown that FE modelling can be used to accurately characterise the behaviour of a tire where limitations in experimental facilities prevent tire characterisation using the required level of input severity in physical tests.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Today much of technical advances are due to the usage of electricity. The contribution of solar power to the production of electricity in Germany currently surpasses water powered electricity which was in 1990 the almost exclusive renewable energy source. The technology of photovoltaic systems based on high-powered sun radiation, often utilizes glass plates as a supporting structure. This dissertation primarily focuses on the research and development of a mounting system with a higher or high modulus adhesively bonded joint to the PV-module as well as an all-purpose connection to the substructure. The systematical development process of the connection to the PV-module is based on the approach of a flexible supporting ring-shaped mounting element. This reduces the tension within the glass surface at the edge of the mounting element when mechanically loading the PV-module. A novel connection using a clamp-wedge combination ensures the ability to mount the PV-module horizontally or vertically to the rail substructure. Through the development process, the bonded joint is exposed to various scenarios where the construction as well as the adhesive possibilities and limitations under each scenario are analyzed. Research outcomes yield recommendations for appropriate pre-treatment of the aluminum surfaces. Numerical simulations as well as the novel use of the near-field photogrammetry method confirmed beneficial action of the flexible ring-shaped mounting element within assembly testing of large glass specimens. This dissertation discusses how different variables can have a considerable effect on results when introduced through the testing device and through monitoring methods

Full text
Abstract:
A Cool Air unit (C. A. U. ) is powered by air bled from the engine and supplies cool air to the avionics and cockpit of the aircraft. Essentially a small turbo machine, the rotor is mounted upon two plain (gas) air bearings, which are flexibly supported by elastomeric '0'-Rings. The project objectives were to investigate, experimentally and theoretically, the mechanism of dynamic instability, half frequency whirl (HFW) observed in the C. A. U design, and hence evaluate methods by which it can be best controlled. Two main areas of study were embarked upon. Firstly a steady state aerodynamic study, based on an existing single bearing rig, to evaluate the extent of aerodynamic operation and single bearing instability (HFW). This Test Rig did not have '0'-Ring flexibility. Bearing L/D tested were 2,1.5 and 1.0, with variable loading of 18-1 -º 51.2N and speeds of 6000 -º 40000 Rpm in approximately 5000 Rpm intervals. the theoretical study investigated non-linear effects of air film pressure distribution. Secondly a Dynamic instability study of HFW was carried out on a newly designed Test Rig, simulating small turbo machines and the C. A. U.. Three bearing types were evaluated, Aerodynamic, Hybrid and Hybrid porous. With L/D of 1.0. '0'-Ring Centres varied from 0.17 4 0-83 of bearing length. Viton and Silicon materials were tested with 70 shore hardness. Rotor mass, inertia, asymmetry and unbalance were investigated along with '0'- Ring stiffness and damping variation from air pressure (0 4 120psi). Theory was developed to determine whirl onsets and effects of unbalance, and damping of the support. Non-linear (stagnant areas) of air film detected experimentally, are not explained by Raimondi's theory. Experiments show that Raimondi's theory seriously over estimates the applicable area of fully developed aerodynamic operation. Pressure Profile at onset of Instability tends to a Sommerfeld condition. Temperature was a good indication of lubrication regime. Linear temperature rise curve denotes Aerodynamic operation, and transition to non-linear curve represents onset of Instability (HFW). Authors theory considers non-linearity of air film and suggests a new method of evaluation to improve convergence. Dynamic study of dual bearing rig concludes, first instability onset speed (RSW) can be passed through due to residual unbalance and damping in the '0'-Ring support. Theory developed shows relationship of RSW and HFW effects due to unbalance and damping and results agree well. Viton offered better damping than Silicon. RSW not present in Viton at'0'-Ring centres above 10 mm. HFW not present with Viton below 55,000 rpm. RSW observed with ui /cu = 1.0 and HFW occurred with m /m = 0-493 4 0.58. hybrid porous bearings had lower performance than hybrid, but better than aerodynamic. Hybrid bearings mounted in Viton '0'-Rings offer best performance long term. Aerodynamic bearings can be concluded to be inherently unstable and have limited aerodynamic operation, so should see little use in high speed turbo machinery, including C. A. U. or aircraft applications where zero g loading likely.

Abstract:
The present study approaches the metallurgical and topographical alterations on the cylinder of an internal combustion engine block made of gray cast iron, after durability dynamometer tests. The tested engine has flexible fuel technology (Flex-Fuel), and is capable to work with both gasoline/ethanol fuels, in any mixture proportion. One engine has been tested with ethanol and another one tested with gasoline, and so representing two extreme conditions on which the engine may work in terms of fuel. The research has been developed basically through the conceptual approach by the bibliographic review and the experimental steps that involved: general engine durability test at dynamometer bench; metallurgical and topographic characterization analysis at laboratory, after the test with both fuels, applying Scanning Electronic Microscopy SEM, optical microscopy metallography, profilometer and roughness parameters quantification, and so forth; critical analysis on the results, discussion and final conclusion.

The flexible barrier is an application from the flexible rock fall prevention system. There is more than fifty years history in Europe about flexible rock fall prevention system, which was designed to replace the traditional rigid barrier. Recently, some flexible rock fall prevention systems successfully stop a few debris flows. Their success cases encourage the engineers start to use them in debris flow prevention. The elasto-plastic stress strain characteristics of ring net and wire of flexible rock fall prevention system absorb impact energy of falling rock. Its brake ring accepts the rest energy. Five design parameters of pole high (H), pole distance (B), debris flow rate (v), debris flow unit weight ( ) and stream slope (β) were considered in this study. The dynamic energy formula and impact force theory of fluid flow were used to evaluate the debris flow behaviors between (1) the pole distance (B) and stopped debris amount (V), (2) the pole distance (B) and the debris flow rate (v), (3) the pole distance (B) and the debris flow impact force (F), (4) the barrier resistant energy (E) and the pole distance (B), (5) the unit energy ( ) and the debris flow rate (v), (6) the unit energy ( ) and the stopped length of debris flow ( ). Finally, some design charts based upon pole distance (B), debris flow rate (v), debris flow impact force (F), and barrier resistant energy (E) were proposedin this report.
