Abstract:
Flexible Manufacturing Systems provide a fast reaction possibility to the changes in production conditions. As production conditions change, other changes in the final product like changes of the product variants, or other unpredictable events may be also expected. For achieving a quick responsibility of production, it is necessary to leave the traditional form of production process planning. Nowadays most of the products are designed by using the CAx software. The product design 3D model contains not only the geometrical data of product, but may contain a part of the process plan and technological data as well.

<div class=""abs_img""><img src=""[disp_template_path]/JRM/abst-image/00260004/03.jpg"" width=""200"" /> HVAC assembly line</span></div> Since Denso started its Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) in the mid-1970s, we have continued to develop it in order to stay competitive in the face of market fluctuations. In this paper, we present a typical new production system that was developed at the end of the 20th century. One characteristic of this system is that it has a longer life and lower facility life cycle cost than do other production systems in existence. We think this system has high potential in terms of production innovations. Since one of the most important devices for FMS is the robot, we hope this paper will be a guide for new production systems and new device development. </span>

Abstract:
The main advantage of the flexible manufacturing system is its high flexibility in management of production facilities and resources (time, machines and their utilization, etc.). The largest application of these systems is in the area of small batch production where its efficiency is getting near to the mass production efficiency. Its disadvantage is the high implementation price.

Abstract:
SUMMARYIn this paper a new approach to planning of Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMSs) is discussed. This approach takes advantage of FMS features and is based on linking of machining and assembling operations. There are two problems embedded in the presented approach: station loading and operation scheduling. A formulation of a station loading problem for a single machining period is presented. Some of the computational results are also discussed.
