Keller, Thomas. Use of fibre reinforced polymers in bridge construction. Zurich, Switzerland: International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.2749/sed007.

Full text
Abstract:

The aim of the present Structural Engineering Document, a state-of-the-art report, is to review the progress made worldwide in the use of fibre reinforced polymers as structural components in bridges until the end of the year 2000.
Due to their advantageous material properties such as high specific strength, a large tolerance for frost and de-icing salts and, furthermore, short installation times with minimum traffic interference, fibre reinforced polymers have matured to become valuable alternative building materials for bridge structures. Today, fibre reinforced polymers are manufactured industrially to semi-finished products and ccimplete structural components, which can be easily and quickly installed or erected on site.
Examples of semi-finished products and structural components available are flexible tension elements, profiles stiff in bending and sandwich panels. As tension elements, especially for the purpose of strengthening, strips and sheets are available, as weil as reinforcing bars for concrete reinforcement and prestressing members for internal prestressing or external use. Profiles are available for beams and columns, and sandwich constructions especially for bridge decks. During the manufacture of the structural components fibre-optic sensors for continuous monitoring can be integrated in the materials. Adhesives are being used more and more for joining components.
Fibre reinforced polymers have been used in bridge construction since the mid-1980s, mostly for the strengthening of existing structures, and increasingly since the mid-1990s as pilot projects for new structures. In the case of new structures, three basic types of applications can be distinguished: concrete reinforcement, new hybrid structures in combination with traditional construction materials, and all-composite applications, in which the new materials are used exclusively.
This Structural Engineering Document also includes application and research recommendations with particular reference to Switzerland.
This book is aimed at both students and practising engineers, working in the field of fibre reinforced polymers, bridge design, construction, repair and strengthening.

Full text
Abstract:
The chapter discusses the principles of endourology outlining the principles behind the sub-specialty. Topics disused include endoscopes, cystoscopes, rigid and semi-rigid ureteroscopes, flexible ureterorenoscopes, rigid and flexible nephroscopes, disposable equipment, integrated operating theatres, narrow band imaging (NBI), theatre ergonomics, and antibiotics. Urologic endoscopes are generally of two optical designs: the rigid, rod lens system described by Hopkins, while fibre-optic imaging bundles are used in both rigid and flexible endoscopes. The rod lens system consists of a series of glass rods with polished ends with the key feature of air gaps that act as a lens. Light is carried efficiently along the rod, resulting in a clear and bright image.

Pavlovskis, Pēteris. Analysis of Two Actual Problems of Interlaminar Fracture Assessment of Layered Composite. RTU Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.7250/9789934228148.

Full text
Abstract:
Two types of specimens were studied based on applying the nonlinear theory of flexible plates to obtain the interlaminar fracture toughness of layered composites. For a specimen of the thin sub-layer type, a theoretical solution was obtained in relation to the determination of the interlaminar fracture toughness for a mixed II/I mode. The fundamental possibility of using this solution in test practice was confirmed. The application of the nonlinear theory of flexible plates to the well-known standard specimen of the double-cantilever beam (DCB) was studied in more detail. A theoretical solution was obtained, an iterative algorithm for processing test results based on MATLAB code was developed, highly flexible glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) specimens were tested and their comparison with the results of processing according to the ASTM D 5528-01 standard with correction of the linear solution was given.

MacGrogan, Donal, José Maria Pérez-Pomares, Bill Chaudhry, José Luis de la Pompa, and Deborah J. Henderson. From cushions to leaflets: morphogenesis of cardiac atrioventricular valves. Edited by José Maria Pérez-Pomares, Robert G. Kelly, Maurice van den Hoff, José Luis de la Pompa, David Sedmera, Cristina Basso, and Deborah Henderson. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198757269.003.0017.

Full text
Abstract:
At the looping stage of heart development, tissue patterning of myocardium and endocardium at the atrioventricular (AV) junction defines a morphogenic field competent to form valves that initially appear as protrusions of proteoglycan-rich extracellular matrix (ECM) called endocardial cushions (ECs) which are cellularized by an endocardial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Cellular proliferation results in fusion of the major AV mesenchymal cushions and AV septation, whereas smaller cushions receive a supply from epicardially derived cells. These various sources of mesenchyme precursors give rise to most of the valve structures, leaflets, annuli, and supporting tension apparatus. During valve leaflet maturation, the ECM matrix accumulates collagen and elastin and assembles into a thin flexible fibrous structure, which is remarkably tough. Valve development is regulated by the cross-talk between developmental signalling pathways. Pathogenic mutations in a subset of developmentally important genes have been linked to valve disease, suggesting that developmental defects may underlie valve disease in adulthood.

Full text
Abstract:
This book presents an in-depth deliberation on optical networks in four parts, capturing the past, present, and ensuing developments in the field. Part I has two chapters presenting an overview of optical networks and the enabling technologies. Part II has three chapters dealing with the single-wavelength optical networks: optical LANs/MANs, optical access networks using passive optical network architecture, SONET/SDH, optical transport network and resilient packet ring. Part III consists of four chapters on WDM-based optical networks, including WDM-based local/metropolitan networks (LANs/MANs) using single and multihop architectures over passive-star couplers, WDM/TWDM access networks as an extension of PONs with WDM transmission, WDM metro ring networks covering circuit-switched (using point-to-point WDM and wavelength-routed transmission) plus packet-switched architectures and WDM long-haul backbone networks presenting the offline and online design methodologies using wavelength-routed transmission. Part IV deals with some selected topics in six chapters. The first deals with transmission impairments and power-consumption issues in optical networks, while the next three chapters deal with the survivable optical networks, network control and management techniques, including GMPLS, ASON, and SDN/SDON, and datacenter networks using electrical, optical, and hybrid switching techniques. The final two chapters present elastic optical networks using flexible grid for better utilization of the optical-fiber spectrum and optical packet and burst-switched networks. The three appendices present the basics of the linear programming techniques, noise processes encountered in the optical communication systems, and the fundamentals of queuing theory and its applications in telecommunication networks.
