Full text
Abstract:
The handbook contains 99 schemes of flat regular statically definable trusses and exact formulas for calculating the forces in the rods and deflection depending on the number of panels. Algorithms for obtaining analytical solutions in the Maple computer mathematics system are described. Cases of kinematic variability of some truss schemes with a certain number of panels have been noted. An algorithm for analytical calculation of a spatial cantilever truss and an axisymmetric dome is described. An example of farm calculation is considered. Designed for engineers, researchers, students and postgraduates of technical universities.

Cameron, Bob. Illumination and Decoration of Flat Surfaces. CSIRO Publishing, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643097124.

Full text
Abstract:
It must be appreciated that no building surface is perfectly flat and that the best that can be expected is the appearance of flatness. Unfortunately, this appearance can easily be destroyed by the effect of glancing light, whether natural or artificial. Illumination and Decoration of Flat Surfaces shows the effect of different light sources on a variety of lining materials and paints so that best results can be achieved. Different types of building surfaces are investigated, including set plaster, fibrous plaster, hardboard and gypsum board with gloss and semi-gloss paint applied. This full-colour edition also discusses new building materials such as cement sheet, polystyrene and various composite panels, as well as new building practices, low embodied energy materials and higher energy efficiency of buildings. Illumination and Decoration of Flat Surfaces is a must-have for people involved in the building industry, both commercial and residential.

Abstract:
Up to now, the discussion has been mainly concerned with Lie groups and their curved analogs, namely, parallelizable manifolds and their curvatures. The problem is to generalize this construction to arbitrary geometric structures. The first step is to study the flat case, and this is the subject of this chapter.

Abstract:
This article discusses the connection between a particular class of growth processes and random matrices. It first provides an overview of growth model, focusing on the TASEP (totally asymmetric simple exclusion process) with parallel updating, before explaining how random matrices appear. It then describes multi-matrix models and line ensembles, noting that for curved initial data the spatial statistics for large time t is identical to the family of largest eigenvalues in a Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE multi-matrix model. It also considers the link between the line ensemble and Brownian motion, and whether this persists on Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) matrices by comparing the line ensembles at fixed position for the flat polynuclear growth model (PNG) and at fixed time for GOE Brownian motions. Finally, it examines (directed) last passage percolation and random tiling in relation to growth models.

Luminet, Jean‐Pierre. Time, Topology, and the Twin Paradox. Edited by Craig Callender. Oxford University Press, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199298204.003.0018.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter notes that the twin paradox is the best-known thought experiment associated with Einstein's theory of relativity. An astronaut who makes a journey into space in a high-speed rocket will return home to find he has aged less than his twin who stayed on Earth. This result appears puzzling, as the homebody twin can be considered to have done the travelling with respect to the traveller. Hence, it is called a “paradox”. In fact, there is no contradiction, and the apparent paradox has a simple resolution in special relativity with infinite flat space. In general relativity (dealing with gravitational fields and curved space-time), or in a compact space such as the hypersphere or a multiply connected finite space, the paradox is more complicated, but its resolution provides new insights about the structure of space–time and the limitations of the equivalence between inertial reference frames.
