Abstract:
Flaky particles, because of their shape, are considered as inferior aggregates in asphaltic mixtures, and specifications usually set limits on the amount of flaky particles in asphaltic mixtures. In this study, the effects of flaky particles content on the volumetric properties, Marshall Stability and creep behaviour of hot mixed asphaltic concrete have been investigated. Specimens with two different types of gradation and specified amounts of flaky particles were made and used for Marshall Stability and static creep tests. Test results show that the Marshall Stability decreases and the air voids content of asphaltic mixture and the voids in mineral aggregate increase as the flaky particles content increases. It is also found that flaky particles cause increase in permanent deformation and decrease in creep stiffness. The creep tests also show that the recoverable deformation of the mixtures decreases as the flaky particles content increases.

Abstract:
A flaky test is a test which could fail or pass for the same version of a certain software code. In continuous software development environments, flaky tests represent a problem. It is difficult to get an effective and reliable testing pipeline with a set of flaky tests. Also, according to many practitioners, despite the persistence of flaky tests in software development, they have not drawn much attention from the research community. In this paper, we describe how a company faced this issue, and implemented solutions to solve flaky tests for REST web services. The paper concludes proposing a set of key success factors for stopping flaky tests in this type of testing.

Full text
Abstract:
Using the techniques of X-ray diffraction, polarizing microscopy, uniaxial compression, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the relationships between the microfracture features and mineral morphology of granite were studied. The results showed that feldspar, quartz, and biotite are the main components of the granite samples in this study. Biotite has a self-shaped flake structure with perfect cleavage. K-feldspar has a lattice double crystal structure with two groups of cleavage. Plagioclase has a semi-self-shaped plate structure with two groups of cleavage. Quartz is prismatic or granular and exhibits noncleavage. The microfracture features of biotite are flaky with exfoliation, and flake cleavage fracture is mainly determined by its peculiar flaky cleavage. Feldspar (K-feldspar and plagioclase) is plate, layered, or two groups of cleavage and is also mainly determined by its peculiar two groups of cleavage. The microfracture features of quartz are highly irregular, with many randomly distributed intergranular and transgranular cracks, small particles or granule bulges, similar to quartz crystal, and this is due to the noncleavage feature of quartz itself. It is demonstrated that microfractures are preferentially ruptured along cleavage planes for these granite minerals under the action of external forces.

Abstract:
The microbiological influenced corrosion (MIC) behavior of the low alloy steel with granular-Zn-epoxy and flaky-Zn-epoxy coating in the sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) solution was investigated with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), X-rays diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) etc. Results show that the protection effect of the flaky-Zn coating specimen is much better than the granular-Zn coating one. The dissolution of zinc is more severe in granular-Zn coating than in flaky-Zn coating when the specimen immersed in the SRB solution. The shielding property of flaky zinc is much higher than granular zinc in the coating. The flaky-Zn coating is much more compact than the granular-Zn coating and therefore the property of anti-infiltration is much better. We may conclude that the flaky-Zn coating exhibited more favorable corrosion resistance property than the granular one.

Abstract:
Flaky and porous rod-like MgO powders were prepared by molten salt synthesis with MgCl2, CaCO3, NaNO3and KNO3as raw materials. TG-DSC, XRD and SEM were used to investigate the reacion process and characterize the resulting products. The results indicated that Ca2+was displaced by Mg2+and dolomites were formed and finally converted into magnesium carbonates during the molten salt synthesis. Fibrous Mg(OH)2formed in PEG solution and flaky Mg(OH)2formed in EDTA-PEG solution illustrated that EDTA and PEG molecules could define the growth direction of Mg(OH)2. The porous rod-like MgO powders with 20-80 nm in diameter and 40-100 in length-to-width ratio were obtained by the decomposition of fibrous Mg(OH)2at 600 °C, while the flaky MgO powders were prepared by the decomposition of flaky Mg(OH)2at 600 °C. Flaky MgO powders were platelike, with 30-50 nm in thickness, 200-500 nm in diameter, and up to 1.0 µm2in a single slice surface area.

Abstract:
It is proved that aggregate’s types have the severe effect on physicomechanical properties of concrete as aggregate covered almost 70 to 80 percent of the total volume of concrete. The effect of Flaky and Elongated aggregates on strength, durability, and workability of concrete has often been qualitatively expressed. The aim of this work is establishing the same quantitatively. M25 grade concrete for different ratios of weights of Elongated to normal aggregate, Flaky to normal aggregate and combined Flaky & Elongated aggregate to normal aggregate was tested for compressive strength at 28 days concrete. Three different types of aggregates were employed in the investigation, namely; normal aggregate, Elongated aggregate, and Flaky aggregate. Density and water absorption also kept constant to identify the effects on properties of concrete only for differences in shape. Thirty-six concrete cylinder was cast at 28 days. Varying dosages of Normal aggregate (60%, 65%, 70%, 75%,80% 85%), flaky aggregate (40%, 35%, 30%, 25%, 20%, 15%), elongated aggregate (40%, 35%, 30%, 25%, 20%, 15%), by mixture volume and length of 12inch (304.8 mm) & diameter of 6inch (152.4 mm) cylinder were used to test. Compaction was done by temping rod. Concrete cylinder was tested at the age of 28 days of curing. This study proposed of mixing three different types of aggregate in concrete. Compressive strength of concrete was measured by the effect of three different shapes of aggregates of varying dosages.

Abstract:
A novel hierarchical nanostructure ofFe2O3-flaky coated carbon fibers was produced by the electrospinning process followed by a hydrothermal technique. First, electrospinning of a colloidal solution that consisted of ferric nitrate and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was performed to produce PAN nanofibers. Then electrospun nanofiber was stabilized and calcinated in nitrogen at 800°C for 2 h to produce carbon nanofibers (CNFs) which were exploited to produceFe2O3-flaky structure using hydrothermal technique. The as-obtained products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results revealed thatFe2O3flakes were successfully grown on the CNFs substrates, and the coverage ofFe2O3flakes could be controlled by simply adjusting the hydrothermal pH value and time.Fe2O3-flaky coated carbon fibers displayed high photocatalytic activity toward degradation of methyl orange (MO) under visible light irradiation.

Abstract:
The frequency profile of complex permeability (μr) and permittivity (εr) and their relationship with microwave absorbing properties are investigated in soft magnetic metal-polymer composite materials. The Fe-Si-Al alloy powder was forged by an attrition mill to get the flaky shape. The composite sheet was fabricated in which the flaky powder was dispersed in the polymer and aligned in the direction perpendicular to the electromagnetic wave propagation. We found that dielectric loss (εr") spectra for composite sheets can be controlled by combining the aspect ratio of the flaky powder and the contents of the filler. The permittivity (εr). of magnetic composite was increased with attrition milling time. The maximum attenuation peak of reflection loss is shifted to lower frequency ranges as the aspect ratio increased, while the value of the maximum attenuation peak gets smaller gradually. From these results, we could design a noise absorber sheet (t=1.0 ㎜) for a quasi-microwave band, which is impedance matched at 1.8 ㎓ with respect to -7.7 ㏈ reflection loss.

Abstract:
Abstract The paper provides a comprehensive presentation of the influence of operating parameters on the tribological properties of the wheel-rail couple. Apart from wear and a friction coefficient, the tribological properties also comprise stereological parameters of flaky wear products. The tribological tests were carried out according to an experimental plan, which took account of the complex influence of operational factors on the size and shape of flaky wear products. This enabled defining the type and intensity of wear, depending on the variable operational parameters. In order to explain the wear mechanism, quantitative, qualitative, and profilographometric metallographic examinations were made.

Abstract:
Ag/TiO2thin films were prepared via sol-gel spin coating method. Structural, surface morphology and optical properties were investigated with the addition of two different amount of silver (Ag). X-ray diffraction pattern shows the sample with pure TiO2, the only phase presence was brookite TiO2. When the Ag content added into the solution, the phase existed for the samples with TiO2doped 0.5g Ag and TiO2doped 1.0g Ag were anatase TiO2with no peak corresponds to Ag phase. The surface morphology of film was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The films were annealed at 450 °C and it shows non-uniform films. The films have a large flaky and cracks film which was attributed to surface tension between the film and the air during the drying process. When the solution of sol was added with Ag content, it shows the porous structure with flaky-crack films. With the increasing of the Ag content from 0.5g to 1.0g, the structure is more porous and it is good for the photocatalytic activity. The UV-Vis spectra shows that the film exhibits a low absorbance which was due to the substrate is inhomogeneously covered by the flaky-crack films.

Abstract:
A low infrared emissivity coating was prepared using graphene surface-modified flaky aluminum complex powders (rGO-FAl) as fillers. The flaky aluminum powders were coated with graphene through chemical bonding. Compared with pure flaky aluminum, the Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance of rGO-FAl complex powders was significantly decreased, which was beneficial to the low glossiness of the coating. After the modification, the glossiness at 60° of the coating with 40% (mass fraction) pigments decreased from 12.8 to 6.7, while the coating maintained low infrared emissivity (0.238~0.247) at a spectral range of 8–14 μm. In the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement, at the lowest frequency, the impedance of the Al-rGO test plate was at least two orders of magnitude greater than that of the control Al test plate, and the graphene layer significantly increased the bandwidth of the maximum phase angle, which indicates a good protective effect of the ultra-thin graphene layer on metal in a corrosive environment. The coating with 40% rGO-FAl complex powders can maintain its appearance after 500 h of salt spray corrosion testing. In contrast, the color of the coating with the original aluminum powders changed after only 300 h.

Abstract:
Thermal barrier coating (TBC) is a need for automotive components to avoid high temperature oxidation during hot forming. The formation of thick and flaky iron (Fe) oxide layers at high temperature on the high strength steel (HSS) is not acceptable because that can damage & pollute the pressing tool surface and interfere with the welding process. A TBC is evaluated on the HSS using HT-XRD (high temperature x-ray diffraction) technique to understand quantitative evolution of oxidation at high temperature. The characterisation results of the present coating system have shown significant reduction in oxidation of the substrate and inhibit the formation of flaky oxide layers at elevated temperature.

The types and addition dose of zinc in the zinc-rich coating have a significant impact on the character of coating. Two types of the zinc powders and the amount of zinc were researched in this paper. It reveals that flaky zinc coating is better than the spherical zinc coating on corrosion performance, and the performance of the coating will be the best only when the solid content of zinc is reasonable. The results also show that optimal solid content of flaky zinc are 62.5%, 60% and 60.5% in the inorganic zinc-rich coating, epoxy zinc-rich coating and vinyl resin zinc-rich coating, respectively.

Abstract:
Coatings with flake carbonyl-iron powder as absorber and polyurethane resin as matrix were prepared. The complex permittivity, complex permeability and microwave-absorbing properties were investigated in the frequency range of 2–18 GHz. Both the complex permittivity and permeability of the flaky carbonyl-iron were increased compared to the spherical powders. The minimum reflection loss decreased and the matching frequency shifted to the lower frequency region with increase in the coating thickness. The band width can reach nearly 16GHz as the RL was below than-4 dB with thickness only 1.4 mm. The minimum reflection loss value of-14.5 dB was obtained at 3.56 GHz for the 1.6mm coatings with 89 wt% carbonyl-iron powders. These results showed that the coatings were favorable for the broadband low-frequency microwave absorption with a small thickness.

Abstract:
Cold spraying (CS) is a solid-state layer-by-layer deposition technique, allowing to fabricate complex-shaped metallic components, such as metal matrix composites (MMCs). It has been demonstrated that introduction of a nacre-like nanolaminated architecture in man-made MMCs can perfectly beat the conflict between strength and ductility (toughness). In this work, the fully dense carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced Al6Si (hereafter called CNT/Al6Si) MMC with the nanolaminated architecture is successfully realized by flake powder metallurgy followed by CS. It is revealed that the nanolaminated architecture, containing nanosized grains, is properly created in the CNT/Al6Si flaky powder by ball milling, which is then conserved in the CS-processed component. The harmful excessive formation of Al4C3 due to interfacial reaction is limited and structural integrity of initially incorporated CNTs is well retained.

Abstract:
Aggregate characteristics of shape, texture and grading influence on workability, finishability, bleeding, pumpability and segregation of fresh concrete and affects the strength, shrinkage, density, and durability of hardened concrete. About 80% of total volume of concrete consists of aggregate. Construction and durability problems have been reported due to poor mixture proportioning and variation on grading. Aggregate characteristics significantly affect the performance of Quality Concrete (QC) both in fresh and hardened state and have an impact on the cost effectiveness. Flaky and elongated particles lead to higher voids than cubical, rounded and well graded particles. The shape factor of aggregate plays a vital role in the design and performance of QC mix and it is mainly depends on the rock formation and type of crusher being used for crushing the aggregates. Flaky and elongated particles have larger specific surface area which results in higher demand of cement paste in cement concrete mix. These particles impede compaction or break during rolling and decrease the strength of the concrete structures. An attempt is made to study the effect of shape of aggregate on quality of the concrete used for the buildings and pavements. Initially an aggregate samples were collected from the stone crusher (two types) and prepared with different proportions of Flakiness and Elongation indices to conduct tests on properties of aggregates and compressive strength and flexural strength tests on concrete. The effect of different percentages from 0 to 50% of combined Flaky and Elongation Aggregates (CFEA) for quality concrete on the compressive and flexural strength of cement concrete is studied. The other properties of aggregate such as bulk density, impact value, water absorption have been studied for different shapes of aggregates. The cost analysis has been carried out with an optimum value of 30% CFEA in 1:3 proportions of flaky and elongated particles.

Abstract:
In this study, the aim is to simplify the graphite cleaning process. In order to achieve flotation for graphite effectively, ultrasonic treatment was used as a pre-treatment technique. Flotation tests were conducted using different ultrasound power and ultrasonic treatment time. The influences of ultrasonic treatment on particle sizes, morphologies, wettability, the content of surface elements and on the flotation effect of flaky graphite were investigated. The results of ultrasonic treatment for graphite flotation were compared with the results of conventional flotation. The results showed that ultrasonic treatment not only changed the size of flaky graphite, but also eliminated impurities on the graphite surface. Additionally, the ultrasonic treatment improved the hydrophobicity of graphite. It was observed that ultrasound can remove not only silicate impurities but also most other metal impurities. The yield, carbon content and recovery of flotation concentrate were 91.46%, 95.17% and 96.12% after ultrasonic treatment for 4 min with ultrasound power 1600 W, which were 5.83%, 2.86% and 8.84% higher than that of conventional flotation, respectively. The graphite after ultrasonic treatment was conducted only one times flotation, the carbon content in concentrate products had reached 95%. This study indicates that intensifying graphite flotation by ultrasonic treatment can shorten the graphite cleaning process.
